Galashiels + Tourisms + Future scenarios Tourism at present,in Galashiels is relatively undeveloped but with great potential. The main reason for this is a at present lack of exposure and difficult transport links. Therefore, our idea is to create a base to develop this sector through enahancing the river and its surroundings. The walking festival The Scottish Borders Walking Festival is the longest walking festival in Scotland and has been taking place for the past 20 years. The festival already took place in Galashiels with great response in 2008. Our idea is to combine a walking experience on a similar basis, but more on a permanent basis. The walking paths would include tracks to all important locations in the town nad to important view points and scenic locations around. Identifying nodes and making connections Different spots in and around the town with touristic interests have been identified. These nodes range from historical value, to recreational spots, and scenic locations. Secondary paths are then created from the main walkway connecting these places with the river. The Walkway The entire pathway along the river will be developed into a scenic and environmental friendly walkway, thus promoting tourists to take the walk and explore Galashiels at their own pace. The Gala Water A single natural element running all along Galashiels. This is identified as the main vehicle to create a connection with the entire town and its surroundings.

The sectional drawings show how routes along the water can be transformed. Porous walkways are sheltered by slective tree planting. Along the route shelt is provided for pedrstrian and cyclist with an opportunity to include for interpretative exhibition. Lighting and power along the walkway and its attendant facilities are provided by solar photovoltaics installed along the route.

Visitor Centre and Cafe At the end of the river walk where the Gala Water meets the Tweed we propose a visitor centre and cafe. This has open views across the river with new landscaping to the north. It includes an information point a restaurant with open decking overlooking the river. Power is provided by a large roof mounted PV installation. The drawing shows a design for decosntruction strategy. The main building systems are framed and easily demountable for re-use elsewhere.
