It is been two years since my first edition as editor of the rehab newsletter, now is time to move on, but not without saying thank you to all of you that collaborated with me the last two years giving me your suggestions for changes and nice comments. I hope one more time that you enjoy reading this new edition Have a wonderful summer!!! Best wishes, Lesley

From the Coordinator Desk

Hope to see you all on the 25th! Enjoy your summer! Jodi Saunders

As it often does, the approach of summer brings joy and anticipation of great weather, outings and often fun vacations. The approach of this summer also brings a bit of sadness as the retirement of Reta and Ginny quickly approaches. We hope you will all be able to attend the retirement party to be held on June 25th (details in this newsletter) in their honor in Jones Commons in the Lindquist Center. Program highlights include: • Spring Colloquium: We had a wonderful colloquium presentation this past April by Jim Stachowiak and Jan Gorman on accommodations and the workplace. This presentation was extremely well received with lots of information and demonstrations on devices and approaches new to the field. • New Advisory Board Member: Anne Alliger, (Put her title and place of employment). We are happy to welcome her to our board. • Advisory Board Elections: Eda Holt was elected as Chair-Elect and Gillian Fox will continue as Secretary for 2011-12. • The Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Counseling Exemplary Status: Both programs (M.A. & Ph.D.) were 2 of only 5 programs at the University of Iowa to receive an exemplary ranking. • CACREP: We are busily preparing for our CACREP re-accreditation process, which will take place next year.

Getting to Know the Advisory Board Mr. Orville Townsend How did you decide to study rehabilitation counseling or become involve in this field? When I first began working for Vocational Rehabilitation Services I was employed as a work evaluator. After working with clients for a period of time, I acquired an interest in counseling and as a result I enrolled in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at the University of Iowa. What was your motivation to become a member of the Advisory Board and continue through the years? As Supervisor of the local Rehabilitation office I worked closely with the staff at the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Iowa. They extended an invitation to be on the Advisory Board and I accepted. What do you think that is the most important role of the members of the Advisory Board? I feel that it is important that members bring information to meetings and share it with staff in the counseling program. There are constant changes occurring and Advisory Board members sharing this with staff creates a positive avenue for learning. Recommendations for future professionals reading this ‌ Future professionals should do a self -assessment to make sure that they really want to work with citizens with disabilities. They should also check out other professional areas to make sure that they are really interested to not only provide services in this area but also to be aware of the salary range and be able to make a commitment to function within the boundaries that are associated with the profession. Recommendations or comments in general I personally have found being a rehabilitation professional to be extremely rewarding. I feel it is important that individuals in the profession be able to handle change and also be able to frequently assess their consumer needs and be able to adjust their approaches to providing services and constantly be aware of other agencies and services that can assist in getting positive outcomes.
