Music review: Kings of Leon: Come Around Sundown david fernandez reporter

Kings of Leon hit their first big commercial success with their 2008 release Only By The Night. The Followill boys (the band being composed of three brothers and a cousin) became a household name among alternative and pop fans alike. The band’s newest edition to their discography fits very well with previous releases, with its surf-ish style and relaxed feel. From start to finish, it flows very well with the transition between songs being almost effortless, similar to Pink Floyd albums. The problem that this creates for the band is it eliminates real, true singles from the album. Come Around Sundown is filled with great riffs and intelligent harmonies. Most songs have a very consistent drum beat with really creative and fun basslines from bassist Jared Followill. Caleb Followill’s vocals are a bit on the softer side compared to early releases (there is nothing as close to shocking and unusual as the song “Charmer”) but it works with the slower feel of the album. The band’s first single, “Radioac-

leads are okay, but the real downfall is that the chorus can become quite repetitive. The main guitar riff is also nothing to gloat over, as well. “Pickup Truck” is the perfect closer. The bass is so up-front in the mix and the flow and build up can compare to some contemporary Christian songs. You will have a hard time understanding the lyrics, which is actually a good thing because the concept and story behind the song is quite stupid. The bass takes the lead on songs like “Pony”, “The End”, and “The Face”, all of which are very musical and well written and constructed. The album poses one big flaw. All of the songs sound almost exactly the same. The variety is so small, the album can easily become background noise to a conversation. It is an easy listen, but it is not a serious listen for the casual fan. All in all, the album reaches their true fanbase much more than Only By The Night, but it doesn’t completely alienate the pop fans. It should encourage the newer fans to go back and enjoy previous releases that new fans have loved for years.

A great way to hang with friends after school is to sit around and enjoy a hot delicious pizza, and Jimmy C’s is a great place to do it. Their relaxed and courteous environment made a recent visit pleasant and welcoming. The waiter and waitresses possessed positive attitudes which made the experience all the more pleasureable. They also wore Halloween costumes to help boost the holiday spirit. Along with the workers showing Halloween spirit, the establishment was decorated with skeletons, pumpkins and other Halloween decorations. The food was overall pretty good, especially the pizza. The hand-tossed crust was crunchy and the cheese was gooey and cooked to perfection. My friends and I split an order of bosco sticks and they were much better than those that are sold in the cafeteria. Megan Berwin (11) ordered the wings and said they were awesome and really hot. For dessert, Jimmy C’s has a few options to choose from. Some of those options are fruit dessert pizzas and Dip ‘N Dots. Niki Hudacek (11) accompanied me to Jimmy C’s and she ordered the chicken parmesan sandwich. Unlike the rest of our group she did not enjoy her meal. She said it was not the best

and very bland. Hudacek also told us that the old school video games made up for the sandwich. An engaging commodity Jimmy C’s owns is a Touch Tunes machine, which is like a jukebox but touch screened and loaded with music of all kinds. Their establishment also includes an intense game room which consists of Ms. Pacman, Galaga, shooting games, driving games and games with prizes. I give Jimmy C’s Pizza three and a half stars because of the well-prepared food, commendable service and enjoyable overall experience. I would definitely recommend Jimmy C’s Pizza if you are looking for a friendly and delicious place to catch up with friends or watch a hockey game on their big plasma screen TV.

Hopkins brings thrills with “Fallout” emily maag

start, fearing that they will read another 600-plus page novel that will revolve around foolish Krisitina. Well, those readers are in for a surprise. “Fallout” is about Kristina’s kids. Five kids, four different fathers and one drug addict mother equals a whole lot of trouble. The story is told from three different point of views: her eldest son, Hunter, as well as her two daughters, Autumn and Summer. They all have three different paths in life and are united by only two things: They have the same mother and no one knows that the others exist. The novel begins with 19 year old Hunter, who was raised by Kristina’s parents. A radio personality that is hopelessly in love, Hunter is the one

In 2004, Ellen Hopkins published “Crank.” In 2007, she published its sequel, “Glass.” Now, she’s ending the widely read trilogy with “Fallout.” As fans know, “Crank” tells the story of Kristina, a young girl who spirals into a deep battle with crystal meth. “Glass” continues Kristina’s story as she faces new struggles as a single parent as well as a desperate addict. By the end of both of these novels, most readers were sick of Kristina’s immature shenanigans. However, Hopkins has redeemed herself with “Fallout.” When picking up the novel, a loyal Hopkins reader might be hesitant to

who knows the most about Kristina’s past. Since he lives with her biological parents, he has always had a clue about what is going on in Kristina’s world. Next, readers meet Autumn, Kristina’s seventeen year old daughter. She lives with her father’s sister and father in Texas. All she knows about her parents is that they were together for the “Monster,” for meth. Also, she knows that they were both once locked up together in Nevada. She has never met her mother and has met her father, Trey, once. Autumn begins to discover her past after Trey’s family storms her Aunt Cora’s wedding. Finally, readers meet Kristina’s 15

year old daughter, Summer. Summer grew up mostly in foster care. She knows her father, having lived with him for various points in her life. She knows her mother only based off of phone conversations. Summer is clued into her mother’s past after a drunken confession from her father. These three different stories some come together by the end in typical Hopkins fashion. With new discoveries, questions answered and plenty or drama and suspense, “Fallout” is the perfect end to the trilogy.

“Paranormal Activity 2” is scary good emily lansford features editor

A packed audience fills the movie theater just seconds before the sequel to Paranormal Activity begins. Teenagers cling to each other as the lights dim and the movie begins. The movie starts with a blank screen quickly thanking the police department and family that took part in helping make the movie, which was well-used for dramatic effect to make the movie seem like it was based on a true sto-

ry. Then, a home video of an adorable newborn baby named Hunter is welcomed home, followed by several other short home videos. After the first birthday of Hunter, a “break-in” occurs at their home, bringing the father to install security cameras in different rooms of the house. Soon after, the movie screen goes black and reads,” Day One.” Progressively, paranormal activities occur in the house. For the most part, the first 30 minutes of the movie were disappointing

and uninteresting because of the lack of excitement occurring. However, it got better when the paranormal activities started happening. Having the security cameras focused in on the rooms in the middle of the night forced viewers to the edge of their seats and to survey every inch of the room to find anything that may seem odd or out of place. At the end of the movie, the unexpected twist left the audience with butterflies in their stomach due to the immense anticipation and made them
