The Tontine Hotel The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal was built in 1771 by James Brindley with the aim of providing a new route for trade between the Midlands and the Bristol As early as 1772 the Directors of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Company took a decision to have a grand headquarters for their business built at Stourport, incorporating a commercial hotel. It was to be built overlooking the River Severn, with accommodation for 100 beds and adjacent stabling for the convenience of visiting businessmen. The design also included four 'corner' houses at both wings, intended for occupation by the most prominent merchants. Indeed some of the original cast iron fireplaces in the building include the insignia of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Company. A grand central staircase led upstairs to a splendid boardroom for the directors, also subsequently used as a ballroom by the many wealthy visitors who flocked to Stourport in it's heyday, throwing countless extravagant parties at The Tontine and holding summertime regattas on the canal basins. The building is Grade II* Listed and remains to this day the most impressive Georgian building in the town.
