Motet to perform in Richmond as part of Jam Sandwich Festival By Alan Sculley

s 2015 came to an end, Lyle Divinsky had his immediate future pretty well mapped out. He was releasing a solo album, “Uneven Floors,” and getting ready to hit the road to promote the new music. Then everything changed when Divinsky was contacted by the Motet, a funk band that suddenly found itself in need of a new lead singer. Even though “Uneven Floors” was making some noise behind a top 5 soul music single in the United Kingdom, it didn’t take any convincing for Divinsky to change his plans and find out if he was the right fit for the Motet. “It was pretty funny timing,” Divinsky acknowledged in a recent phone interview. “I had just put the (“Uneven Floors”) record out. I had actually started to get some love from over in the U.K. and Japan about ‘Uneven Floors.’ I was just about to click send trying to book a bunch of stuff. I was running my own thing, like managing myself. So it was a lot of work, and then the Motet opportunity came around.” The Motet represented a significant step up on a career level for the singer. The only initial issue for Divinsky was whether he could continue to do solo and side projects if he were to become the Motet’s new singer. And that concern was alleviated immediately. “It was kind of a no-brainer to me,” the singer said. “I know a lot of the guys in the band also have little side projects that they do and solo projects that they pursue. I talked to them, making sure I would still be able to do something like that as well. I definitely want to keep that going.” With career considerations out of the way, the main question to answer was a musical one. The Motet had started recording its seventh studio album, “Totem,” and had

essentially completed basic tracks for the songs. The group needed lyrics and vocal melodies for some songs and wanted to improve on the lyrics and melodies that had been completed for other songs. So to test their musical chemistry with Divinsky, the group sent him the instrumental tracks for “The Truth,” a song that looked destined for the scrap heap in its lyric-less form. Divinsky transformed the song and soon he was meeting up with the rest of the band for rehearsal, and then after an initial run of shows in early 2016, the singer became an official member of the Motet. It makes sense that Divinsky was a good fit for the funk-centric Motet. He grew up in Portland, Maine as a fan of funk and soul music – courtesy of his father, an exceptional singer and big fan of those genres. Divinsky, around 2009, moved to New York City to pursue music. He had to pay his dues, scraping around for gigs at night, and during the day he often played solo in the subways tunnels of the “Big Apple.” He actually found he could make more money in tips in the subways than he usually did with club gigs with his band, and often used the subway proceeds to pay his band members. Slowly, but surely, Divinsky made progress, and his fortunes got a boost when he was chosen for the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Abe Olman Scholarship award. “I had been playing in New

York for about four years at that point,” Divinsky said. “They gave me some money to spend toward music. I got to take some trips and learn about a bunch of music and get myself a little bit of gear so I could keep on doing the thing.” Eventually all roads led to the release of the “Uneven Floors” solo album and the chance to join the Motet and help finish the “Totem” album, whose spirited, soulful and richly funky tunes like “The Truth,” “Fool No More” and “I Know It Too Well” give every indication that the current lineup of Divinsky, new sax player Drew Sayers and holdover members Dave Watts (drums), Joey Porter (keyboards), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Parris Fleming (trumpet) and Garrett Sayers (bass) is set to make its best music yet. Divinsky says fans that see the Motet this winter will experience a group that has developed considerably as a live unit in its time touring together. “We’ve learned each other so much more as we go,” said the singer. “Every night’s a conversation and every night you get to learn a little bit more about each other’s playing and where the songs want to go and how we want to kind of morph things to best suit us and best inspire us. I think we’re getting to the point where it’s just become like we don’t have to think about it nearly as much. When you’re able to just be in the moment with each other, then that’s when the special moments happen. I think where we’re at and what we’re getting into, those special moments are just coming more and more frequently because of that.” Motet will be performing as part of the Jam Sandwich Festival on Mayo Island in Richmond on June 16. Hause solidified the album's sequence before even going into the studio, aiming to craft a narrative arc that drove the album from its dark, heavy first half into a lighter, more hopeful tone. A thematic line of melody runs through the songs, reflecting the overarching ideas in the music itself. Together since 2010, Parquet Courts is an American indie rock/ post-punk revival/ garage rock band hailing from Brooklyn, New York. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Andrew Savage, vocalist and guitarist Austin Brown, bassist Sean Yeaton and drummer Max Savage. The band released their first album entitled “American Specialties” in 2011 and it was released as a limited cassette. They followed up with their sophomore album, “Light Up Gold” a year later in 2012, which was initially released by Savage’s Dull Tools record label but was later reissued by What’s Your Rupture? Former vocalist of the hardcore bands Give Up the Ghost and Some Girls, Cold Cave represents Wesley Eisold’s earliest excursion into instrumentation. In 2008 Eisold issued his debut EP “Coma Potion” on Heartwood Records, which was followed by the fulllength “Love Comes Close” in 2009. Led by the single “The Trees Grew Emotions and Died”, the record earned a host of esteemed reviews and spawned the subsequent singles “The Laurels” and “Life Magazine”.

Robert Plant: Robert Plant is a British singer/songwriter, best known for his work as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the rock band Led Zeppelin. Born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, Plant was renowned for his trademark high pitched falsetto vocals, which lead to him being adorned with the title of the ‘greatest singer of rock’ time and time again. In a poll carried out by Planet Rock, Plant came out on top for the greatest rock vocalist, and the title stuck. Throughout his career, the musician has had signiﬁcant inﬂuence on great musicians, including Freddie Murcury. Additionally, in 2011 he was awarded the 1st place nomination for the greatest lead singer of all time from Rolling Stone Magazine for his time in Led Zeppelin. As well as releasing countless albums with Led Zeppelin, Plant has 10 studio albums to his name, 8 of which have achieved either a gold or silver status. Plant’s talent as a multi-instrumentalist has helped tremendously in his composition over the years, playing harmonica, guitar, bass, and drums. Elle King: Elle King is a singer and songwriter hailing from Los Angeles, California, United States. Since debuting in 2005 she has released one studio album along with one EP, and is best known for her hit single “Ex’s & Oh’s”. Inspired to play music by the legendary, all-female hard rock band The Donnas after her step-father gave her a record of theirs at the tender age of nine, Tanner Elle Schneider had picked up the guitar by the age of 13 and started writing her own songs. While at ﬁrst she was inspired by hard rock and soul, she eventually discovered a passion for bluegrass music that inspired her to take up the banjo as well. It was this combination of rock, soul and country that would inﬂuence her songwriting the most, and by the age of sixteen, she was playing live at the nightclubs of New York City (where she was studying in college). Since then, she’s released her debut single “Good To Be A Man” in March 2012 and debut album “Love Stuff” in 2015. Elle King will be performing at 6 p.m. at Virginia Credit Union LIVE!, 600 E. Reckless Kelly: Understanding the virtuosity of Reckless Kelly requires the perspective of where the band has been. Cody and Willy Braun grew up in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. They moved to Bend, Oregon, and then migrated to that great musical fountainhead, Austin, Texas. The band’s co-founders and frontmen toured the country as part of their father’s band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys, as children. They performed on The Tonight Show twice. Their father taught his four sons a professional ethic – integrity, persistence, hard work and professionalism – honed over three generations. They overcame hardships, struggled for recognition, and learned the lessons of the trial and error that deﬁned them. Collectively, they’ve played over 3,000 shows and traveled over 1,500,000 miles to 49 states. Reckless Kelly is a great band with an apt name. The outlaw’s spirit pervades the ambiance. They are rugged individualists who dedicate themselves to advancing the state of their art. They’re good guys, too. Their hearts dwell in the right places, and those are where the music follows. Reckless Kelly will be performing at 8 p.m. at The Broadberry, 2729 West Broad Street in Richmond on Sunday, June 10.

RÜFÜS: RÜFÜS (aka RÜFÜS DU SOL in North America) are an indie dance trio who formed in 2010 hailing from Sydney, Australia and have won an allegiance of fans and critics alike with their dreamy and catchy rhythms. Having just completed a sound engineering course, Jon George (keys) met Tyrone Lindqvist (vocals) through his brother and he jumped on board to record to his Lindqvist’s solo acoustic project. Bonding through their mutual love of artists such as Booka Shade, Trentemoller and Royksopp, they experimented with a more electronic sound and recorded the outcome in their bedrooms. Once the material had been produced, James Hunt (drums) from a local indie band completed the line-up and the vision for RÜFÜS was realised. The result of these recordings would become their debut self-titled EP which they released in 2011 featuring the ﬁrst single “We Left” on their own label Monkeleon. RÜFÜS have supported LCD SoundSystem and Holy Ghost! and made appearances at SXSW, Wonderland Festival and Reading and Leeds festival, comfortably situating themselves at the forefront of Australia’s emerging EDM scene. The New York Mets got off to an impressive 11-1 start this season. Then the injuries started piling up and by early May their lead in the NL East had faded. Despite a slew of team injuries Yoenis Céspedes has at times kept the Mets going while enduring nagging injuries of his own. Céspedes and the Mets host the New York Yankees to close out a weekend, crosstown interleague series Sunday, June 10 on ESPN. Like the Mets, Céspedes had a solid April but sore quadriceps has all but landed him on the disabled list, although the Mets have given him some rest time. He’s responded well with his bat, which makes it hard for the Mets to keep him out of the lineup. Until he landed with the Mets in a mid-season 2015 trade, Céspedes was bouncing around the big leagues. He came up with the Oakland A’s who traded him in 2014 to Boston, who then traded him to Detroit. The Tigers then struck a deal with the Mets and in 2015 Céspedes found himself in the World Series where the Met’s lost in five games to the Kansas City Royals. The Mets liked what they saw and currently have him under contract through the 2020 season. Injuries have plagued the Mets and Céspedes each of the past two seasons. In 2017 he only played in 81 games. It he and the team can work through this round they could still emerge as a late season contender.

Tony honoree Chita Rivera: ‘I’m made up of all those people I worked with’ Chita Rivera is a true Broadway icon, but earlier in her career, she was shaping up to be the Susan Lucci of the Tony Awards. She went home emptyhanded with her first four nominations, a record so disheartening good friends John Kander and Fred Ebb wrote her a novelty song. It was called – what else? – ‘’Losing.“ She had to drop that song from her repertoire, though, when she won the 1984 Tony for Kander and Ebb’s “The Rink,“ followed by another for the same team’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman” in 1993. On Sunday, June 10, during CBS’ live telecast of “The 72nd Annual Tony Awards,“ Rivera – along with British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – will receive a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theater. Even for Rivera, whose long list of accolades include the Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, this latest award is humbling, she says. “It kind of makes me feel as if God is tapping me on the shoulder and saying, ‘You did good, kid,’ ” the actress says. “It’s a reminder of the many wonderful years and the shows and the many amazing people I’ve learned from. I feel as if I’m made up of all those people I’ve worked with: the Jerome Robbinses and the Michael Kidds and the Jack Coles, all the people who helped me paint my painting.” At 85, Rivera shows no signs of slowing down. As recently as 2015, she picked up her 10th Tony nomination for the Broadway musical “The Visit,“ a record she shares with the late Julie Harris. She says she’s still ready and eager for that eight-performancesa-week grind. “Oh, my God, yes!” she says. “It only keeps you healthier. The more you keep that brain working, the more you keep your body moving, the happier your whole universe will be. I truly believe that. ... You should still be contributing, to be telling those stories. That contact with the human race is an extraordinary thing.” Well, usually, at least. The fan mania for selfies occasionally can be a nuisance, she acknowledges.

I much prefer just to talk to people, but it’s all right with me, as long as they ask first if it’s OK for them to take a picture.” She expects to be in a reflective mood on this Tony night, she adds. “This is a business that I am grateful I was allowed in,” she says. “I don’t know what else I would have done, I love the theater so much. I just love TV. I’m a TV baby. I’ve had a radio job – I love the intimacy of radio – and I’m an editor-at-large at O, The Oprah Magazine, so I’m in the magazine business, too. TV is definitely my first love, though. I love being on it, and I love what it represents. And even though we’re under attack with “fake news” now, I never think that moniker applies to CBS. I’m very proud of what we do here. Do you enjoy the physical set-up of “CBS This Morning,” with its trademark round table?

You cannot fake chemistry, you cannot script chemistry. That’s just something that either you have or you don’t. When Charlie (Rose) left, that was of course a big blow to us. We were trying to figure out what to do, and it turned out that the solution was right here all along.

I had never thought, “Great, let’s get John Dickerson,” because I thought that he was so wedded to “Face the You know, people say it just lends Nation.” He was so great at it, and itself to conversation, because you when they told me he was interested can see everybody. You don’t have to (in joining “CBS This Morning”), I was turn left or turn right. And the way our surprised. It was like he just slipped studio is, the green room (for waiting right in, and I believe it’s been a guests) is right off the set, so you can seamless transition for us.

In the pilot, we learn that your character Bonnie doesn’t make the greatest of choices, like when she took the kids with her to catch her cheating husband in the act.

But she asks them to duck so they don’t see. There was a whole scene that isn’t in the pilot where – a tiny scene but the girls hear us fighting, they hear that big fight and so that’s why I go in to apologize to them. But that’s what’s fun to play because that’s not, as a mom, you are so responsible and mindful but sometimes you slip up. And in that moment, she sees red. Who’s she going to call? She’d have to call these girls. She didn’t have time to put it all together so she shoves them in the car. So I can validate her reasoning but it’s totally irresponsible. But I did ask, “Can they duck?” She doesn’t want them to see it. Because they don’t really see what’s going on – but then she tells them later (laughs). Nonetheless, this is a character who has guts.

She has guts. She has guts and she plays but she’s on her own path and she’s blazing her own path and it’s really cool. Did you actually get to drive the 1975 Cadillac Brougham?

Yes. I did drive it. I drove it a lot, actually. It was fine because it was not a shift, it was an automatic so it was OK.
