The lesser known benefits of

CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE

A

ctive people tend to have varying views on cardiovascular exercise, or cardio. Often done at the end of a workout, cardio rarely evokes a staid response from fitness afficionados asked to share their thoughts on this valuable type of exercise. Fans of cardio will admit they love the feeling they get during and after a rigorous round of this type of exercise, which includes activities like running, cycling and walking. But those men and women who dread their time on the treadmill, elliptical machine or stationary bike are likely to categorize cardio as a boring and uninspiring activity. But regardless of a person’s opinion on cardio, there’s no denying it offers numerous benefits, many of which even avid athletes might be unaware. • Cardio boosts brain power. Perhaps the least known benefit of cardio is its positive impact on the brain. During cardiovascular exercise, the brain is being flooded with chemicals that improve decision making,

SOUTHSIDE HEAD & NECK SURGERY. P.C. D.B.A

memory and problem solving. Cardio can also help preserve memory and improve its ability to learn. So while the physical benefits of exercise are widely known and noticeable to the naked eye, cardiovascular exercise can be just as effective at improving cognitive function. • Cardio can improve your appearance. Improving physical appearance is a motivating factor for many physically active men and women, and cardio can go a long way toward improving physical appearance because it increases lean body tissue while reducing fat. Cardiovascular exercise is a healthy way to burn calories, and burning calories is a healthy means to losing weight. • Cardio can help reduce the severity of preexisting conditions. Arthritis sufferers have long looked to cardiovascular exercise as a healthy means to relieving the pain caused by their condition. Water exercises like swimming make for great cardiovascular exercises, especially for those looking to relieve arthritis pain. That’s because an exercise such as swimming keeps joints moving while strengthening muscles surrounding those joints. Studies have shown that cardiovascular exercise also can lower blood pressure. • Cardio can improve mood. Cardiovascular exercise can benefit men and women suffering from depression or those who are simply having a bad day. That’s because the mood-boosting chemical serotonin is released to the brain during cardio, helping to improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression or fatigue. • Cardio can make tomorrow’s workout easier. Recovery time is important to athletes, many of whom want to ensure their bodies are ready for tomorrow’s workout even before they finish today’s. Cardiovascular exercise helps to deliver more oxygen-rich blood to muscle tissue, aiding in tissue repair and recovery. The quicker your body can rebound from today’s workout, the more effective tomorrow’s workout will be. So even if you don’t enjoy that pit stop at the treadmill before you head home, it’s paying more dividends than you might know.

UNDERSTANDING AND FIGHTING HYPERTENSION Go hand in hand

Are there symptoms of HBP? The AHA notes that HBP is typically devoid of symptoms. So people suffering from HBP may not know it if they have not routinely had their blood pressure checked. Over the years many myths have prevailed regarding HBP. Such myths can be dangerous, giving people a false sense of security regarding their blood pressure. For example, in the early 1900s it was assumed that people with high blood pressure experienced more frequent headaches than those with healthy blood pressure. However, a study published in the journal Neurology found that people with high blood pressure were significantly less likely to have headaches than those with healthy pressure readings. Nosebleeds have also been linked to high blood pressure, but one study found that 83 percent of patients treated for high blood pressure did not suffer from nosebleeds. Debunking such myths is important, as it further emphasizes the need to receive routine blood pressure readings as the only reliable means for men, women and children to determine if they have high, low or healthy blood pressure. Anyone experiencing frequent headaches or nosebleeds should consult a physician but should not assume such occurrences are a byproduct of high blood pressure.

Routine blood pressure screenings are often the only way men and women can learn if they are suffering from high blood pressure.

H

ypertension, often referred to as high blood pressure, affects millions of people across the globe. According to the American Heart Association, more than 76 million adults in the United States alone have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. But even children and teens can suffer from hypertension, making it a formidable but largely preventable foe. Understanding high blood pressure, or HBP, may encourage adults and children alike to take steps to maintain a healthy blood pressure, which can reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. What is HBP? HBP is often associated with men and women who are considered to be constantly on edge, nervous or hyperactive. But even laid back men, women and children can suffer from HBP. As a person’s heart beats, it creates pressure that pushes blood through the body’s arteries and veins. Those arteries are made of muscle and a semi-flexible tissue that stretches when the blood is pumped through them. The more forcefully that blood is pumped, the more that flexible tissue is stretched. When the tissue is stretched too much, a person is at an increased risk of suffering from a host of problems, including blood clots, plaque buildup that can lead to heart attack and stroke, and tissue and organ damage from arteries that have narrowed or become blocked.

24

Can certain foods help reduce high blood pressure? One rumor concerning HBP actually has some merit. A heart-healthy diet that includes the following foods can help men, women and children manage their blood pressure and reduce HBP if necessary: • Blueberries: Blueberries contain anthocyanin, a natural compound that a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found can protect the body against HBP. • Whole grain cereal: A Harvard University study found that whole grain cereals that are high in fiber can reduce a person’s risk of developing HBP. • Beet juice: A study from British researchers published by the AHA in its journal Hypertension found that a glass of beet juice can lower blood pressure in a matter of hours. • Low-fat dairy products: A 2008 study that examined nearly 30,000 women at an average age of 54 found that those who consumed the most low-fat dairy products, including skim or low-fat milk, were significantly less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed dairy products that were high in fat. HBP is a common problem that affects millions of people of all ages across the globe. There are several ways men, women and children can reduce their risk of HBP and lower their blood pressure if it’s already high.

you eat should be considered nearly as important as what you’re eating.

KOnce EEPING WEIGHT OFF it’s Gone L

osing weight can be a life-changing event. For some men and women, the desire to lose weight is largely cosmetic, while others must lose weight for medical reasons. Regardless of the reason behind a person’s desire to lose weight, setting and achieving such a goal is an accomplishment to be proud of. As difficult as losing weight can be, men and women often find it even more difficult to keep that weight off once it’s gone. But maintaining a healthy weight does not have to be so difficult, especially when people can apply the same effort and discipline to keeping weight off that they did to losing weight. The following are a few additional tips to help men and women maintain a healthy weight. • Exercise daily. Exercise plays a significant role in many people’s weight-loss efforts, and men and women should continue to emphasize exercise as they work to maintain their weight loss. An exercise regimen that helped you lose weight can be just as effective as you work to keep that weight off. Aerobic and strength-training exercise can help men and women maintain a healthy weight while reducing their risk for various diseases, including heart disease. Strength training exercise can be especially important for men and women as they age, as such exercise helps maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. • Continue to monitor eating habits. Once the weight has been lost, that does not mean you can return to your pre-weight loss diet. After those excess pounds have disappeared, continue to watch what you eat, avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugar. In addition, continue to control your food portions to avoid overindulging. Portion control can go a long way toward helping men and women keep weight off, and how much

• Enlist the help of others. Many people enlist the help of family and friends as they attempt to lose weight. Immediate family members, in particular, tend to play a significant role in such efforts, acting as a daily support system and even, on occasion, serving as the “food police” when men and women veer off course of their healthy diets. Such support can be just as valuable as you work to maintain your weight loss. If you worked out on the buddy system on your way to losing weight, continue to do so. If your family adopted a healthy diet to help make things easier on you during your weight-loss efforts, continue to eat such healthy foods as a family, which can only pay dividends for everyone in the long run. • Expect some setbacks, but don’t accept them. Just like there were setbacks on your road to losing weight, there will be setbacks as you try to maintain that weight loss. Such setbacks are to be expected, but they’re much easier to accept when you’re already at a healthy weight than they were when you were overweight. But when you accept setbacks and don’t work to avoid more, all that hard work losing weight could end up being for naught. Don’t beat yourself up if you gain some of the weight back, but if you do, assess how it happened and work to address any issues that might have led to that weight gain.

Simple and health ways to

Health benefits of

BOOST YOUR ENERGY LEVELS A

CAFFEINE COULD OUTWEIGH NEGATIVE

s a day wears on, many men and women find their energy levels steadily decreasing. Some resort to a cup of coffee, while others prefer a sugary snack to get more pep. Such solutions are not always healthy and rarely provide more than a temporary jolt of energy.

So what are men and women to do when the inevitable post-lunch doldrums rear their ugly heads? Oftentimes the best way to remedy a dip in energy levels is to prevent it in the first place. There are several simple and healthy ways to boost your energy levels so you don’t find yourself falling flat in the afternoon. • Drink water throughout the day. Water is a versatile beverage that serves many purposes, not the least of which is its ability to make a positive impact on your energy levels. When the body does not get enough water, it can send a variety of signals that are easily misread. The symptoms of thirst or dehydration can easily be confused for hunger, which may cause you to eat more during the day, and that food can make you feel sluggish as the day progresses. Even slight dehydration can make you feel fatigued. If drinking water isn’t a part of your daily routine and you find yourself feeling fatigued on a regular basis, start drinking water and your energy levels will likely increase. Water is an especially good way to boost your energy levels thanks to its availability and affordability. • Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals is robbing your body of the fuel it needs to get through the day. Skipping breakfast is especially harmful, as you will be starting the day off essentially on a fast and your energy levels will suffer as a result. A healthy breakfast that includes whole grain cereals or breads as well as some fruit and lean protein is a great way to start the day off energized. And no matter how busy you are during the day, be sure to eat a healthy lunch, ideally one that includes some protein. Protein is important because it takes the body longer to break down protein than it does carbohydrates, giving you an energy source that lasts longer than a lunch without any protein. • Exercise. Fatigue can be a byproduct of a body that’s overworked but also a side effect of a body that isn’t being worked enough. Daily exercise will increase your energy levels, even if the exercise is minimal. Research conducted at The California State University found that even a brisk 10-minute walk increased energy levels for as much as two hours. If your energy levels tend to start waning in the afternoon, consider a short, mid-afternoon jaunt. The dividends such a walk pays regarding your energy levels may just last until it’s time to call it a day. • Don’t cut too many calories. Men and women fighting fatigue may feel as though their weight is the main culprit behind that lethargy. Though being overweight or obese can have a negative impact on energy levels, it’s important men and women don’t cut too many calories from their diets when attempting to lose weight. Doing so may slow your metabolism, which can cause feelings of fatigue. If you are overweight or obese, you may very well need to cut calories, but don’t do so at the expense of your energy levels. Many men and women find themselves battling fatigue come the mid- to late-afternoon. Though it’s easy to pour yourself another cup of coffee or lean on an energy drink once the post-lunch listlessness rears its ugly head, there are several alternatives to such remedies that can be more effective at boosting your energy levels over the long haul.

T

he pitfalls of caffeine consumption are well known, but the various health benefits of caffeine are often overlooked. Excessive caffeine can make a person jittery and unable to fall asleep. However, caffeine can also prevent disease by boosting the immune system. Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a psychoactive stimulant drug. It is a naturally produced plant product that is most often found in coffee beans, tea and cocoa. Whether caffeine addiction is real or not is open for debate; however, regular coffee drinkers who stop drinking coffee have experienced caffeine withdrawal symptoms. In the last 60 years, researchers have conducted thousands of studies on caffeine and they’re continuing to study whether or not it’s addictive. Though few might be willing to say with certainty that caffeine is “good” for you, caffeine does have its strong points. • Fights damage-causing free radicals: Free radicals are molecules in the body that can attack healthy cells and cause damage that precipitates disease. Antioxidants are substances that eliminate free radicals in the body. Recent studies have shown that caffeine’s antioxidant activity actually fights free radicals quite well. In a study published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, the different chemical mechanisms of caffeine were studied in relation to free radicals. Researcher Jorge Rafael Leon-Carmona of Mexico found that a mechanism called radical adduct formation, or RAF, was the main reason caffeine can protect against damage from free radicals. • Improves memory and brain function: Harvard University researchers have determined that men who drink four cups of caffeinated coffee a day are half as likely to develop Parkinson’s disease as those who don’t. The results are believed to be linked to caffeine’s stimulation of dopamine production in the body. Dopamine is a brain chemical that is responsible for alertness, problem-solving capabilities and feelings of pleasure. An Austrian study says caffeine can boost cognitive abilities for about 45 minutes, which means it may help individuals score better on tests or perform better in business meetings. There is also evidence that caffeine can delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. That’s because caffeine can block adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine slows down the neurological system so that the body can relax. However, adenosine may also contribute to the buildup of amyloidbeta, a toxic brain plaque that’s associated with Alzheimer’s disease. • Helps the heart: Although caffeine can cause blood pressure to rise because it constricts the arteries, caffeine does not appear to contribute much to the development of heart disease. In fact, scientists at Brooklyn College found people who drank four cups of caffeinated coffee daily had a 53 percent lower risk of dying of heart disease than those who didn’t consume a cup of Joe. Individuals who do not already have hypertension can tolerate moderate coffee drinking, and over time their bodies actually may become accustomed to the temporary rise in blood pressure. • Aids with type 2 diabetes risk reduction: More than 125,000 participants were studied in a 20year look at coffee consumption and its potential relationship to type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham & Women’s Hospital have found individuals who drank caffeinated coffee lowered their risk for type 2 diabetes considerably. Men saw a 50 percent reduced risk, and women saw their risk reduced by 30. • Alleviates headaches: Caffeine is often a hidden component of analgesics. Working in conjunction with the pain medication, caffeine helps the body absorb the pain reliever more efficiently. This requires a smaller amount of the drug and brings relief faster. Some other people surmise that since caffeine is a natural mood booster, it also helps the body to feel better faster. Following this line of thinking, caffeine may help to prevent other pain associated with exercise, fibromyalgia and arthritis. Sometimes caffeine is seen as the villain in a healthy living plan. Yet there is much research and ever-evolving theories that caffeine may be more help than hindrance.

TAKE A PROACTIVE APPROACH to Stress F

ew men and women can avoid stress. Be it a byproduct of a hectic work environment or the result of juggling a family and a career, stress is a part of life for many adults. In fact, according to a report from the American Psychological Association, 77% of adults experience physical symptoms of stress on a regular basis. The APA also notes that job pressure is the leading cause of stress, followed by money and health. Many adults cannot envision a scenario in which they aren’t worrying about work or their finances, so it’s easy to assume there’s little they can do to reduce their stress levels. However, there are several proactive steps men and women can take on a daily basis to reduce their stress levels in an attempt to live a healthier life. • Give yourself a little more leeway. Work-related stress is not always a byproduct of tension with coworkers or a seemingly endless workload. For some, work-related stress starts on their way into the office and continues on their trip home at the end of the day. Sitting in traffic when you have to be at the office by a given time is a significant stressor for many men and women. In a 2011 independent study commissioned by the navigation product manufacturer TomTom®, researchers studied the physiological stress markers in participants’ saliva and found that both men and women experienced an increase in stress when driving in traffic, even when they did not feel their stress levels increasing. Men had a particularly stressful experience when sitting in traffic, as their stress levels increased by 60 percent when driving in traffic (female stress levels increased by 8.7 percent in the same circumstances). To avoid such increases in stress, leave for work a little earlier in the morning. Giving yourself an extra 15 to 20 minutes to get to the office may help you respond more positively to rush-hour traffic, reducing your stress levels as you get ready for the day ahead. Leaving early may even allow you to take an alternate route to work that might be slightly out of the way but feature fewer motorists. • Get out from behind your desk. Sitting behind a desk all day makes it easier to work through lunch, which can make your workday seem that much longer and that much more stressful. Take a more traditional lunch break, even if

it’s only to the office kitchenette or cafeteria, so you can get away from your computer and think about something other than work for a little while. After lunch, take periodic breaks to stretch and to take a quick breather. Get a glass of water or a cup of tea or just walk around. Such breaks can prevent existing stress from escalating further or can help you ward off work-related stress entirely. • Make healthy changes to your lifestyle. Your lifestyle can either help you prevent stress or make stress that much worse. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise and a nutritious diet, including one wherein caffeine and sugar consumption is kept to a minimum. The APA notes that poor nutrition is the fifth-leading cause of stress in the United States, so emphasizing a healthy diet may prevent the onset of stress or reduce its symptoms. Too much caffeine and sugar can cause mood and energy swings and negatively affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. A bad night’s sleep will only exacerbate stressful situations throughout the day. In addition to eating a healthy diet and finding time to exercise, which may prevent stress or reduce its effects, you should limit your alcohol consumption and stop smoking if you are a smoker. Excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco or drug use are negative ways to cope with stress and will only make stress worse, while avoiding such triggers may help you prevent the onset of stress. • Reduce your workload. The APA study found that 31 percent of adults admitted to having difficulty managing their responsibilities at the office and at home. It’s difficult to reduce your workload at home, so consider doing so at the office. This can be as simple as delegating responsibilities more often or as significant as working less. Stress is associated with a host of ailments, including heart disease and a weakened immune system, so even those adults who feel they cannot budge with regard to their professional responsibilities might need to do so if work-related stress has gotten out of hand, as the consequences of ignoring stress could prove dire.
