It’s been 77 years since a British men’s player last won a singles title at Wimbledon. Andy Murray, consider this your cue. Indeed, the 26-year-old native of Glasgow, Scotland, and current resident of London appears primed to run the table at the 2013 Championships, which get under way Monday, June 24, on ESPN. Under the tutelage of eight-time Grand Slam champ Ivan Lendl, he’s evolved into one of the best players on the ATP Tour, consistently ranking in its top four since 2008. He’s also enjoyed recent success on the grass courts of London’s All England Club, advancing to the final in 2012 before succumbing to Roger Federer in four sets. A month later on those same courts, he gained some revenge on the former World No. 1 by beating him in straight sets to win gold at the London Summer Olympics. He capped off his eventful summer a month later in New York, when he defeated former top-ranked player Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the U.S. Open to earn his first Grand Slam title. This year, he’s played well, picking up wins at Brisbane and Miami and making it to the final of the Australian Open, where he lost to Djokovic. He withdrew from the French Open because of a back injury, but experts lauded the decision as a wise one for someone targeting Wimbledon. If he’s right, he could be the first male Brit since Fred Perry in 1936 to win at Wimbledon. No place like ‘Dome’ It’s Monday, April 15, and cast, crew and a contingent of press are inside of a soundstage in Wilmington, N.C., watching a tense scene destined for the CBS summer event series, the 13-episode adaptation of the Stephen King novel, “Under the Dome.” Premiering Monday, June 24, it chronicles the events in the small town of Chester’s Mill, Maine, when a transparent dome suddenly appears over it, putting every living thing there in utter isolation.
The large cast includes Mike Vogel (“Bates Motel”) as Dale “Barbie” Barbara, an Army veteran in town on a mysterious mission; Rachelle Lefevre as investigative reporter Julia Shumway, whose husband is suddenly nowhere to be found; Dean Norris as “Big Jim” Rennie, a politician and town bigwig; Alex Koch as Junior, his disturbed son; Britt Robertson as Angie McAlister, a sharp-witted young woman involved with Junior; and Jeff Fahey as police chief Howard “Duke” Perkins. Also
starring are Colin Ford, Natalie Martinez, Nicholas Strong, Jolene Purdy and Aisha Hinds. “Not only do I love the world, the Stephen King-ness of it,” says executive producer Jack Bender in one of a series of pre-lunch interviews, “but I really am fascinated by these people that we get to put under the microscope by this dome.” Bender previously worked on “Lost,” about jet passengers who crash-land on an island, and he sees similarities.
“We’re not going to be politically correct,” he says, “and we’re going to be true to the characters in Chester’s Mill – what’s been created from Stephen’s book – but I do think one of the things that’s cool about this is it speaks to, as did ‘Lost,’ how do we all survive? How do we all live? “There’s this thin layer of cellophane between us and the other kind of life where all you’re worrying about is survival, which most of us have been blessed not to live.”

There’s always camaraderie when people gather around a table with chef Lidia Bastianich. The PBS special, “Lidia Celebrates America: Freedom and Independence” Friday, June 28, demonstrates that the camaraderie runs deeper than food – it is one of ideals. In the third of her specials, Bastianich travels to chef Jacques Pepin’s Connecticut home, where they discuss Bastille Day. In Galveston, Texas, actress Anna Deavere Smith accompanies Bastianich as she learns about Juneteenth, the celebration of Galveston’s slaves being freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. And in New York, she celebrates Philippines Independence Day with actor Alec Mapa. All, of course, are done with food as a central theme, and Bastianich tries new dishes, including Filipino banana ketchup. When she learns that it’s put on pasta, the celebrated Italian chef jokingly says, “That’s sacrilegious.” Bastianich visits Monticello in Virginia, where a naturalization ceremony is held on Independence Day. “We followed one young lady who was Persian, and she never had an opportunity to vote,” Bastianich says. The moment she’s a citizen, the woman registers to vote. Bastianich, an immigrant from the former Istria, spent two years in a political refugee camp, then came here with her family when she was 12. She completely relates to wanting to exercise the privilege of casting a ballot. “When I came to America, we finally found a place to call home,” she says. “When I was 18, I wanted to become part of this country.” Bastianich cherishes the freedoms here and, like so many immigrants, remembers what she was once denied. “I was small, but I knew I could not go to church,” she says. “I knew my grandmother had to sneak me in. I know what it means to gain freedom. I realized this is an opportunity and I took it. “And there is so much that one can do that America offers,” she continues. “I want to tell everyone how wonderful America is, and how great and how much it does for all different ethnicities and still allows us to be ourselves.”
Lidia Bastianich toasts freedom in PBS special What did you have for dinner last night? “It was ... my grandson’s birthday. To begin, we had prosciutto melon and tomatoes bruschetta. Then we had tortellini, stuffed dumplings in chicken broth, then roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, grilled mushrooms and peppers, and salad from my garden. We had a rainbow cookie cake and a big bowl of cherries.” What is your next project? “A book coming out, ‘Lidia’s Wisdom in the Kitchen.’ ” When was the last vacation you took – where and why? “I just came back yesterday with my youngest grandchildren from Orlando. My special gift is to take them to travel because they learn. For Thanksgiving, I took them to Vienna. When school finishes, I am leaving with the two older boys to Spain.”

‘Anna Nicole’ revisits life, career of ill-fated starlet Smith
Halloween morning 2012 dawns crystal-clear but unseasonably cold over the suburban estate north of Atlanta where “Anna Nicole” – a Lifetime original movie premiering Saturday, June 29 – is in production. Hurricane Sandy swept past the region a couple of days ago, bringing in its wake some frigid arctic gusts. That hasn’t seemed to dim the mood on this outdoor set, however, where burly crew members sport platinum blond wigs and fluffy pink bathrobes over large false bosoms. It’s a goofy gesture stemming partly from this costume-friendly holiday but also because of this TV movie’s title character: Anna Nicole Smith, the voluptuous starlet who dropped out of high school but became a world-famous camp icon before dying at age 39 from a massive drug overdose. Today, director Mary Harron and her team are filming one of the happier moments from Smith’s rocky life: the day that octogenarian Texas tycoon J. Howard Marshall (Martin Landau) tells Smith (Agnes Bruckner) he is bequeathing one of his beloved horses – and, indeed, his entire ranch – to her as an
inducement to spend more time with him. While everyone off camera shivers and gulps coffee, Bruckner, wearing a midriffbaring thin cotton blouse, keeps her sunny smile intact for multiple takes of the scene, as Landau’s Marshall tenderly talks to her character as a knight would to a regal lady. During a short break, a grinning Landau reflects on what drew him to this project. “You know, most people just think of him as an old geezer who picked up Anna Nicole Smith in a strip lounge, but I think he was astonishing in many ways,” the 84-year-old actor explains. “He graduated magna cum laude from Yale as a lawyer, then when World War II broke out, Roosevelt called him in as an adviser to (Harold) Ickes in his Cabinet, because he was the most knowledgeable person on international law. After the war, he went back to Texas and made his fortune. He was a very handsome, dashing young guy back then, with a lot of smarts, and I still see that in him. He’s 89 years old, which means this is the first time in a long while that I’m playing someone who is older than I am.”

OF THE IOWA CORN INDY 250 ON ABC You did a nice tribute to your deceased comrade, Dan Wheldon, after you won last year’s IndyCar season opener at St. Petersburg, Fla. Were you good friends?
Well, he was a colleague of ours; he was a friend of ours. Certainly, he was a guy who’s in our generation. And man, it was just so hard to have a tragedy scenario the last race in Vegas (in October 2011), and all of a sudden he’s not there. So now that I’m a father, and I have one little girl, a 3-year-old, you kind of think about those things: How can this happen in this modern age, with such safe cars and things like that? But that’s just to prove that that’s the sad part of our sport. Unfortunately it’s still a very dangerous sport, and that’s what we have to face, and we just have to deal with it and keep going. Have you found that your victory on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007 has opened up doors for you in television?
Oh, big time. It’s something that I never expected, to be able to do it, but yes, you’re right. We’ve been able to cross (into) some scenarios that I never thought (possible), but it’s great. It’s great that we’re able to be in that area, and hopefully we’re able to bring more attention to IndyCar because of that. How much longer do you want to keep racing?
As long as I’ve got the fire, man. Right now, my biggest idol is Mark Martin. He is the man, I’ll tell you, because ... he’s achieving a lot of things that are impressive. So hopefully we can ... keep driving and kick some ass.
