TEIXEIRA hopes to lead
renaissance in the Bronx
For all the money the New York Yankees spent plugging various holes, there remains a glaring one that could negate all the good work they did this winter. Remember the old “Who’s on first? What’s on second?” Abbott & Costello routine? That could play out in the Bombers’ infield this season. Take a look around – the question marks are everywhere: Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is gone, sitting out the season because of a PED suspension, with a cast of unknowns in the wings; shortstop Derek Jeter, who will turn 40 in June and retire in October, is coming off an injury-plagued 2013; second baseman Brian Roberts hasn’t played a full, productive season since ’09; and first baseman Mark Teixeira was in decline even before a wrist injury limited him to just 15 games in ’13. Yet if right, Teixeira could be the key to the New York offense. Prior to the health woes that began in 2012, the 33-year-old Maryland native was among the game’s most productive middle-of-the-order hitters, averaging 35 home runs, 113 RBIs, and batting and on-base averages of .281 and .373. He also led the league in homers and RBIs in ’09, the year of the last Bomber championship, and won five Golden Glove awards. Though he’s taking it slow this spring, Teixeira says he’ll be ready for Opening Day and is counting on playing at least 150 games – which the Yankees will need from him if they’re to keep pace in the ultracompetitive American League East. ‘The 100’ repopulate Earth
I
t’s 97 years since people managed to do the inevitable – detonate enough atomic bombs that life as we know it was obliterated. Earth’s survivors exist in a hodgepodge of space stations, and 100 miscreant youth are shot back to the home planet. What sort of world they will find and what sort they will create is the basis for The CW’s “The 100,” premiering Wednesday, March 19. The dystopian sci-fi show, which is pronounced “The Hundred,” is believable. Set in the near-enough future that viewers are not required to suspend belief that aliens have taken over, the series begins inside the space stations. After the nuclear apocalypse, 12 nations forged their space stations into one. It is a pretty grim existence. Chancellor Jaha (Isaiah Washington) is the tested leader, who makes very tough decisions that include sending his son down to Earth.

“It is not a morality tale,” Washington says. “It’s a cautionary tale. Hey, we can comment on this show and what needs to change. To show the world we have to take a look at how we treat one another, and if we don’t, this is what can happen.” “It doesn’t mean it will prevail, but without it you have nothing but chaos,” he says. This show, Washington says, “is a drama pretending to be a science fiction.” When you have a bunch of teenagers and a few in their early 20s creating a new society, comparisons to “Lord of the Flies” are inevitable. The pilot sets up two camps: Clarke versus Bellamy, and they need to figure out how they are going to live. Clarke (Eliza Taylor) is an artist, tough and in juvenile detention, though it’s not clear why. It seems no one has to commit too great a transgression to be considered a threat. And punishments are fast and final: People are ejected from the space station, instantly killed in deep space.

MTV puts on the feed at the Woodie Awards Anyone who has ever cooked for a dinner party knows the essential ingredient is planning. Imagine cooking dinner for 5,000 and the planning that requires. Mackie Gmitter, executive chef at the Austin, Texas, barbecue eatery The Salt Lick, is gearing up to cook for attendees at Woodies, a music festival that’s part of the city’s South by Southwest fest. The awards ceremony from that festival, the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards, airs Sunday, March 16, on MTV and mtvU. A few weeks before acts took the stage, Gmitter’s menu was set. “It is a bit of a challenge cooking for this amount of people for the Woodie Awards,” he says. “We need to be a lot more prepared. This is the third time he’s cooking for the Woodies. He’s making chopped brisket sliders, smoked turkey sliders, pork ribs, coleslaw and Hatch green chili mac and cheese. He is also planning “sloppy nachos,” and considering regular ones are not the neatest food, these must be something special, with smoked Gouda and a few other cheeses and chopped beef. His crew makes corn and flour tortillas on site, which gives them, Gmitter says, “that unique flavor. Nothing store bought. You can taste the difference in the first bite.”

Shriver profiles woman living ‘Paycheck to Paycheck’
Maria Shriver may not be a television news regular these days, but her interest in the world around her hasn’t lessened. The NBC News special correspondent likely would contend it only has increased, given her role in such initiatives as “The Alzheimer’s Project” – the award-winning HBO documentary largely inspired by the experience of Shriver’s late father, politician and activist Sargent Shriver, with the disease – and her recently issued Shriver Report (available at www.shriverreport.org) subtitled “A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back From the Brink,” about women and children living on the poverty line in modern America. Related to the report is “Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life & Times of Katrina Gilbert,” a documentary
Shriver executive-produced for HBO, where it debuts Monday, March 17 (and will be offered free the following week at HBO.com, ShriverReport.org and YouTube.com). It follows a single mother of three in Chattanooga, Tenn., as she tries to provide for herself and her young children as a nursing assistant while trying to better her situation. Shriver recently talked about the effect she wants the program to have not only on viewers, but on legislators who can impact the issues it addresses. Q: Are you happy with the documentary? A: First, I’m really happy that HBO wanted to partner on the subject. I think Katrina’s story exemplifies all the issues we talked about in the report, so you see a real life that all the poll numbers and graphs depict.
You see what happens when someone is trying to live off the paycheck they’re working hard for, and they can’t make ends meet. When they want to go back to school, what happens? When they want to have the father involved in their children’s lives, what happens? You also see how hard it is to be economically mature, and I feel good that the film presents a look at an issue as it comes together. Q: How did you discover Katrina? A: ... We looked at several people, and the filmmakers felt Katrina was the best example of everything the report covered – women who started out in relationships and never thought they’d end up as single mothers do; they’re trying to keep a job, and they’re trying to balance services with a certain amount of the money.

•You’re the voice of Anakin Skywalker in both the animated film and TV versions of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” but some newspaper accounts said you went beyond that and had a “Star Wars”-inspired wedding to Angela Stacy in June 2013. Is that true?
Well, my wife is going to be mad that people are saying it was a “Star Wars” wedding, because it wasn’t a “Star Wars” wedding, per se; it had some “Star Wars” elements. I’m OK with saying it’s a “Star Wars” wedding, but I don’t think she is. It had some “Star Wars” elements. We had some storm troopers out there, well, for the “Star Wars” junkies, technically, we had Clone Troopers at the wedding. I had a “Star Wars” groom’s cake. In the vows, my wife said, “I promise I’ll always be the Padme to your Anakin.” •What’s it like playing a humanoid alien high-schooler on The CW’s “Star-Crossed” when, in reality, you’re an old married man?

Soap Synopses The Bold and the Beautiful Brooke struggled to process Ridge and Katie’s news and accused them of having an ulterior motive. Aly sought information on Wyatt and Quinn from Pam.
