Our Management Team William Pym – Founding / Managing Partner Eighteen years ago, William Pym left the British Army as a Captain in the Irish Guards having decided to pursue a career outside the military. He was offered a Relationship Manager position at Union Bancaire Privée in London and from there was transferred to the bank’s Geneva office. He then took on the roles of a Relationship Manager and Team Leader at Citibank and Credit Suisse Private Bank. While he continued to enjoy working with clients, he felt increasingly stifled by the restrictions that came with working for large financial institutions – particularly when the financial crisis struck in 2008. When many banks began to have liquidity issues, William was left feeling that they became so concerned with their own futures that they forgot to worry about their clients’. This meant in turn that he found it increasingly difficult to provide his clients with the best service possible. Working within these banks also meant that William was completely beholden to his employers when it came to the kinds of products and solutions he could offer his clients. “Most banks are very quick to talk about their ‘relationship’ with clients. But when clients want something from the bank, they often find that relationship to be wanting”. At TPO William is now placed in a position where he can truly represent his client’s best interests in a financial transaction by having the freedom to explore the market for the best available solution. It was this desire to work ‘hand in glove’ with clients that led William to establish The Private Office with William Lovering. His role is to oversee the private banking and client solutions aspect of TPO’s business. William is based at our London representative office, where he lives with his wife and children. His interests include golf, tennis, skiing and Chelsea Football Club.

I decided to step over to the other side of the negotiating table, alongside, rather than opposite my clients. William Pym Founding/Managing Partner

Outperforming is not good enough, making money is. Many investment banks have lost sight of this. William Lovering Founding/Managing Partner

Management Team William Lovering – Founding / Managing Partner Over the course of his 25 year professional career, William has worked for some of the world’s largest investment and management firms including Royal Trust, Brown Shipley, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lombard Odier & Cie where he culminated in leading the European and EAFE Equity Team in Geneva. In 2005, William took up the role of Head of International Portfolio Management for Al Rajhi Holdings where he managed a diversified international portfolio of quoted and private investments with a strong bias towards natural resources. While William’s track record saw him rise to executive level and manage teams of investment managers, throughout his career he grew increasingly disheartened with the limitations he faced when it came to achieving the best outcomes for his clients. “Large investment firms are driven by their narrow mandates, which stifle entrepreneurship. I felt this enviroment left no scope to think outside the box”, he explained. William was frustrated when he had to explain to his clients they should be satisfied with a negative absolute performance because they nonetheless outperformed the market. Along with William Pym, William Lovering decided to establish The Private Office SA, where the service is entirely bespoke, the approach is one of partnership with the clients and the commitment is to absolute returns. His role is to oversee the wealth management solutions aspect of TPO’s business. William is based at our head office in Geneva, where he lives with his wife and two children. His interest include classic cars, rugby and mountain pursuits.

Our Management Team Thomas Heppel – Partner / Chief Operating Officer Thomas graduated with a Master of Science in Management from the University of Lausanne and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. He began his career as a University Research Assistant and moved into finance in 1997 as an institutional portfolio manager at Geneva based Private Bank, Lombard Odier & Cie. One of his European equity funds won an IPC award in 2002. Thomas and William Lovering met at Lombard Odier and in 2007, William asked Thomas to Join Al Rahji Holdings and set up the firm’s Geneva branch. During this time, Thomas was responsible for the operations and asset management divisions. Having built a solid and successful professional relationship, Thomas accepted a similar role again in The Private Office. “It was based on mutual trust at the beginning,” Thomas said of his decision to accept William Lovering’s offer. “Since then, I’ve built up the same level of trust with William Pym. And it’s this kind of trust that we aim to build with our clients.” That is why the partners invest their own money with that of the clients where possible. “After all, if you’re taking risks with clients’ money, you should be willing to take those same risks yourself. In other words, you should eat what you are cooking!” Thomas is based at the head office in Geneva. One of the things he enjoys most about The Private Office is that “we work from a blank sheet when it comes to finding solutions for our clients, which allows us to be really open-minded and innovative”. Thomas lives with his wife in the Lake Geneva area, and enjoys skiing, golf, classical music and gastronomy.

There’s no automatic way of doing things, no already known route. We are completely bespoke, client centred and quality oriented. And we will find the right solution for our clients – even if it’s not the solution that’s the most profitable for us”. Thomas Heppel Partner / Chief Operating Officer
