Strong Western Province showing for KZN’s South Coast Surf Carnival

Sunny Scottburgh will once again be the venue for The South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel and independent on Saturday on 6 and 7 November this year. It will be the eighth edition of what has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the South African watersports calendar. The quality of the field this year is exciting, with some of the best wave-riders in the country preparing to impress on Scottburgh main beach “What started with one Cape entry way back in 2005, that being talented longboarder Michael Grendon, has mushroomed into a migration of top competitors from the Cape making the pilgrimage each year to Scottburgh. As an organizer I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Western Cape wave riders for their overwhelming support for the event and wish them luck going into the competition”, commented South Coast Surf Carnival creator Paul Godwin from Nerve Events. The longboarding, kitesurfing and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) competition will be fierce and include some top competitors from the Western Cape. The men’s open longboarding event is wide open this year with defending champion Jason Ribbinck out injured. With so many talented longboarders in the field, it will have to be a strong performance to take the title. Western Cape father and son duo Deon and Justin Bing will be top contenders along with former SCSC champion Dylan Mcleod from Port Elizabeth. Peter Petersen of the Western Cape will be looking to defend his kitesurfing title this year and with perfect conditions and a strong North-Easterly he will face stiff competition from the likes of Gary

van Rooyen (also WP) and Rob Chrystal (KZN). Jonathon Rosslind from Cape Town has decided to focus solely on SUP this year and will start the event as favourite, but he will be challenged by a number of other strong competitors. Chris Bertish, A previous winner of the coveted mavericks big wave title in California, and Gary van Rooyen help make up a traditionally strong contingent from the Cape. SUP is growing rapidly as a sport and the strength of the field for this year’s event will hopefully provide some thrilling competition, as has come to be expected. Other competitors to look out for who will be flying the WP banner will be Andrew Bance, Glen Thompson and Chelsea van Rooyen. The South Coast Surf Carnival is sponsored by Independent on Saturday and Jeep Apparel. 2010 Exams Here we come!

If you are a pupil reading this article, then you understand the importance of being prepared for your year end examinations. A total of 28 Gr 11 and 12 pupils from Plett Secondary school certainly are better equipped as they took part in a 2 day workshop hosted by Andrew Smith of the Plettenberg Bay Community Church. Mr Smith is an ex school principal and a remedial specialist who shared his knowledge which included valuable study methods, general planning of study schedules as well as time management in the daily life of a scholar. On behalf of the group , Born in Africa would like to thank Andrew for assistng us with this project. We wish all pupils good luck for the final exam, especially the Gr 12 learners who’s very future depends on it.

You’ve never been there before and you won’t know the way, unless you follow the chest.” The Israelites have come to the end of their 4o-year trek through the wilderness and are about to enter the land that God promised to their forefathers and to them. As they are about to cross the Jordan River and are awaiting Joshua’s orders, they were probably a bit scared and full of apprehension. Then the instruction comes: “ “When you see some of the priests carrying the sacred chest, you’ll know it is time to cross to the other side. “ Just as the Israelites had to wait for the right time and God’s instructions to start a new episode in their lives, so we, too, cannot just live from day to day without waiting on the Lord to hear what He has to say. Psalm 42:10a [MKJV] reads: “Be still, and know that I am God…” In order to be able to hear God speak to our hearts we need to become still in His presence and know, acknowledge, the He is God and He is in control of our lives. Joshua also said: “You’ve never been there before and you won’t know the way, unless you follow the chest.” In the 400 years in bondage in Egypt they had been slaves serving others and had never before had the experience of tasting freedom in their own land.

Now they had become a nation and were about to get their own country with new blessings, but also with new responsibilities. Those of us who have experienced salvation, who have been rescued from the spiritual darkness of bondage from Satan and have entered the Kingdom of God, are also faced with new blessings and new responsibilities. We, too, have to face the future, one day at the time, and just as the Israelites under Joshua had never been there - in the Promised Land - before and had to obey God’s instructions and had to “follow the chest”, so we have to follow Christ. The chest, the Ark of the Covenant, was a symbol of the very presence of God, His dwelling place in their midst to remind them constantly that He was going with them into this, for them, uncertain and unknown future. Jesus, too, guarantees His followers that He will be there in our tomorrows when He says: I will never leave you nor forsake“ you.” [Heb.13:5b SEV] A Christian, therfore can confidently face tomorrow and say: “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” Henk.

Plett for Peace is hosting a Candle Concert on Central Beach in Plettenberg Bay in conjunction with Bitou Tourism. This peace gathering and music celebration take place on Friday, 5 November, from 17h30. The evening’s entertainment features an exciting line-up of artists including The Reggae Ambassadors, rocker Brent Kozak, singer and pianist Shomon from Durban, Simon Kika of the Bitou Kikka Opera Monstrances, the Phakamisani school choir, folk singer Heather Waters, drummers from Nexus Africa, Chris Morningstar, local songstress and nature conservationist Chrissie and D Coetzee. New Plett Tourism initiative on track

The Plett Tourism Advisory Committee initiative towards rolling out a new tourism plan for Plettenberg Bay is on schedule, and the process has been given further impetus by the Bitou Municipality’s recent announcement that it has commenced with a Section 78 process to determine the “appropriate mechanism for the delivery of the tourism service”. The proposed tourism marketing strategy and activity plan – including a revitalized festival and event calendar – is due to be delivered to the Bitou Municipality by end November, for consideration by Mayco at its 8 December meeting. The Tourism Advisory Committee team is completing a process of consultation with a wide variety of stakeholders and a review of previous tourism initiatives and other related material. The strategy and plan will make recommendations on a number of issues including: Some headline observations about Plett and their relevance and impact on a tourism plan; A review of stakeholder perceptions of Plett, and issues that need to be addressed if a workable tourism plan is to be implemented; Recommendations on: o a range of issues that require further debate and investigation, but which could benefit Plett’s tourism appeal; o development tourism; o a communication strategy, which includes recommendations on how the Tourism Advisory Committee would like to see tourism structured and executed in Plett o a creative strategy o a tourism marketing plan which includes recommendations on advertising, public relations, social media, stakeholder relations and, importantly, an energized festival and event calendar that is designed to attract increasing numbers of visitors to Plett. Should the process continue to be supported by the Municipality, and

the strategic plan be accepted in November, the public will be invited to a presentation of the new strategy and thereafter the new and improved plan will be implemented in January 2011. In addition to the Tourism Advisory Committee’s work, the Bitou Municipality has embarked on a process of public Consultation (Section 78 process as advertised in the press) to determine the appropriate mechanism for the delivery of the tourism service. Letter via the Editor Wednesday, October 19, 1977 This is the day on which the white settler minority regime banned the Black People’s Convention (BPC) and 17 other Black Consciousness organizations and formations. It also detained the entire leadership of the BCM and restricted most of them on their release. These structures involved a cross section of the Black Community including workers, youths, pupils, parents, students, women, artists and religious organizations. This was five (5) weeks after the regime had murdered the BCM founder Steve Bantu Biko in detention.

WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 28 OCTOBER 2010

At that stage, nearly every politically active Black person in Azania owed allegiance to the BCM. This was because the BCM managed to explain to the people in all their fields of work the importance of unity, pride, dignity and self respect. There was peace, harmony, love and solidarity amongst Black people, and militant struggle against the national oppressors and their local representatives. Except for the stooges of the regime, we were all unanimous in our quest for true liberation for Black people, and for the re-conquest of our land. Black people were encouraged to look at their lives and to express themselves openly on how the struggle should be waged. Throughout this period, when the older liberation movements were really dead inside the country, we support them. We gave their remaining leaders a platform from which to address the masses. We revived the names of their imprisoned and exiled leaders when many of their own supporters were too scared to even mention them behind closed doors. We sought to strengthen all instruments of the struggle for the liberation of Black people. We tried to work for unity amongst all organizations of the oppressed. We never realized that some people looked at the struggle as an arena of co-operation. Like the legendary phoenix, Azapo emerged from the ashes and cinders of the BPC, SASO and BCP. Some of the Black consciousness organizations that were banned on Wednesday, 19th October 1977 for their role in resistance and the June 16, 1976 uprisings. Azapo successfully campaigned for the isolation of apartheid SA by tirelessly and vigorously waging the cultural boycott in the country. Under the guidance of AZAPO, black people increasingly regained their resolved to fight for their rights and formed trade unions and civic organizations that drew the blue print for the conduct of struggle’s by civil society. To this day, AZAPO remains the leading exponent of the black

consciousness in this country and draws inspiration from such eminent sons and daughters of this soil such as Steve Biko, onkgopotse Tiro, Lusiba Ntloko and Vuiyelwa Mashalaba, the list is long, but let me finally pay tribute to the icon of this movement, Steven Bantu Biko, the organizational genius who gave birth to a movement, not a party, not a congress, but a movement. October Happenings from the bowls section of the Plettenberg Bay Country Club. It’s amazing to think this will be the penultimate offering of news snippets for this year. KFC Iron Man for kids donate R100 000 to Sabrina Love Foundation

It was one of the happiest moments for Sabrina Love Foundation and Die Sterreweg, an organisation that supports kids with physical challenges and potential, to witnessed as they received a R100 000 donation from KFC Iron Man for kids. Duncan Brown of Kwik Spar, participated in iron man in 2008 and raised money for this Plett NGO. He then later joined forces with the ex Springbok scrum half Garth Wright and Gary Stephenson to form KFC Iron man for Kids that handed over R100 000 cheque to Sabrina Love Foundation last Friday morning. Lindelwa Mnweba the NGO general manager was very happy with the donation. She said it will make much difference as their challenges are transport and running costs of the organisation. We deal with children who need special and professional care and our staff is doing hard and

demanding job their needs need to be fulfilled as we have 24 children and also doing outreach programs said Lindiwe who continue saying I had learnt a lot out of this experience, parents need empowering programs and support groups so that they can be able to cope with children living with disability. She also appreciated Duncan Brown and his crew for their donation. Tony Lubner the chairman of Sterreweg and founder of Sabrina Love Foundation was very happy with this donation as he said government is very restricted on grants and that makes it very difficult to get funding. This R100 000 will help to fill the gap. The donation hand out was also attended by Plett Field Band that entertained guests and children with Ntando’s song Dali Wan that they played with their instruments and kept everybody dancing. This coming Sunday afternoon at 15h30 once again Iphupha Theatre Group will be performing Igobondela “women strike back” featuring Poetry, Uzengu, Ibedi, Imfene, Dancers, Usgubevu and Unonkanyezi at SImunye Hall damade is R15 adult and R10 for

by Heidi We, at the Bitou CVC, are really so very grateful for all the support we have had from the public. We are managing to spay dogs & cats on a daily basis, and are reaching our monthly target. Without the generous donations received, none of this would be possible. It is all about "Team Effort" and together with the Vets, we are making a major difference in slowly reducing the number of animals in the disadvantaged areas. A few months ago I found a puppy in Kranshoek tied up with no food, water or shelter. I explained to the owner that this is unacceptable. I passed by the house a few days later and found the dog on an extension wire, now able to move around, with a kennel, food and water. How shocked I was when I went passed again last week. He was nothing more than a skeleton, obviously underfed and totally neglected. Thank you to PAWS for removing him. Sad that we have to always remind owners to feed their dogs. When passing through the "Graveyard" area in Kranshoek, I found a lovely Maltese tied up to a metal trap. The rope was tangled and he couldn't move. After untangling, the rope was only 500mm long! He was on a sand pile with no food, shelter or water. They can't let him loose, as he runs away. How can anyone blame him! I don't think we will ever get the message across, and for this reason, we need to urgently continue with our Sterilization Campaign. The Charity Shop is hosting a Fashion Show on the 27th of November, to show off the beautiful clothing so generously donated. We will be having Boerewors Rolls, a DJ, and models from the areas where we have been working. We are in need of Evening and Children's Wear to complete the Show. Please consider us, when having a clean out. I would like to reply to "Even Sadder" who wrote in last weeks issue. How can you believe that anyone living on the alleged paedophile's property did not know what was going on underneath his nose. Even if he was not involved it was his duty to inform the Police of what was taking place with the constant stream of underage girls visiting the house within such a secure area. Roger Davis. We believe that the cases which will be heard in court are from alleged activities when the girls were underage and could not testify without their parents permission which was not granted at the time. The girls are now over 18 and have bravely chosen to pursue the case for which Plett applauds them ! Possibly the tenants did not live there at the time ? Let’s leave it for the courts to decide and hopefully justice will be done. Ed
