Another Birthday!

I am celebrating my Birthday week . My Dad believed that 1 day a year was just too short — we need at least a week to be spoilt a little, so we happily continue the tradition. During this week siblings have to be nice to the birthday boy/girl, some of their favourite meals are enjoyed by the family and of course their diary is open( and hopefully full) for sharing special times with special people in their lives.

If no one is close, the week is ideal for special treats and solo dates to yourself to indulge in .

These conditions can result in dehydration and exhaustion which causes the penguins to become disorientated and vulnerable to prey animals. Plett Pre-Primary Concert

Do you know how fantastic South Africa and its people are? We were reminded by the young people at Plett Pre-Primary who shared some f SA’s achievements as they sang and danced, acted and shared their wonderful talent with us. The costumes were also lovely. There were hikers, and trains, sportsmen, nurses and doctors, miners, mermaids, fishermen, animals and insects who all looked terrific.

We are so blessed to have caring teachers who send many hours encouraging the children and putting the evening together to spoil all the mommies, daddies, grandparents, sisters, brothers and, friends. Their nurturing attitude for those who got a little stage-fright was also endearing. The delicious lasagne supper and local “kuier” finished the evening and fed hungry tummies so welll. Thank you .

Letter via the Editor

New Charity Shop.

Many of you may remember that in the year 2000 I started a Charity Shop just below the Municipal Offices which, whilst it was under my control, was very successful, making in excess of R 350 000 in the first year alone. This money was distributed to many charities, such as Plett. Child and Family Welfare, Masizame Children's Home, PAWS and also three feeding schemes for the under privileged.

Unfortunately, after I resigned as chairman and handed over the running of the shop to one of the committee members, it would appear that no great amounts of money were ever donated again and the money, estimated at between 1 and 2 million Rand over the ensuing 8 year period, simply WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 19 AUGUST 2010

disappeared.

The New Charity Shop, known as the Bitou Community Veterinary Clinic Charity Shop, is run by a dedicated committee chaired by one of Plett's longest established veterinarians and I am pleased to say that I am also on the committee.

To enable Heidi to carry on with her sterling work in the field, the shop requires voluntary helpers to assist in the shop. If you have a morning or afternoon free once a week to join our team, please call at the shop between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and leave your details with either myself or Heidi.

The shop is situated directly behind the High Street PEP Stores at shop 2 Atmar Centre.

I would also like to take this opportunity to plea for any household items and clothing that you no longer require which we can sell. Please drop off at the shop above.

World Cup 2010...Many opinions have been voiced concerning the results of this magnificent undertaking. Did the Bitou community benefit from this 'once in a life time' experience. Could more have been done! The answers are given in a report compiled by the dept. Policy, Strategic Planning & Integrated Human Settlements to be tabled at the Mayoral Committee meeting on Wednesday 25 August.

It is quite clear that the Municipality pulled out all the stops in celebration of the tournament. Events prior to the start included 50 days countdown celebration, the painting of participating country flags and a successful hosting of our own Mini World Cup. With limited resources available it was decided to have community viewing areas in Kwanokuthula, New Horizon and Kranshoek. Eleven matches in total were shown at these venues. 14 pupils of Phakamisani Primary School were assisted by the Municipality with transport and the provision of meals while traveling to C.Town to attend the match between Portugal and Korea DPR. Tickets were sponsored by the Dept. of Cultural Affairs and Sports. The municipality also received tickets, sponsored by FIFA, for all the games in Port Elizabeth. These tickets were distributed to the public by means of lucky draws. Through this initiative by the Mayor's Office more than 400 members of the public were able to be part of this historic event. NSRI: National Sea Rescue Institute Media Release:

(For Immediate Release) Sea Rescue – National – Wednesday, 18 August, 2010. WARNING – Shark activity close inshore.

The NSRI and Save Our Seas foundation are warning bathers, paddlers and surfers to be acutely aware that at this time of year sharks migrate towards the shoreline in search of food.

This morning in Plettenberg Bay, at around 07h30, Sea Rescue Plettenberg Bay volunteer, Sean Searle, while preparing to go for a surf with friends at Lookout Beach, was observing the wave sets. They watched 3 surfers, who were already in the water about 50 metres out.

Two of the surfers ducked under a wave when a shark fin appeared close behind them. When the two surfers appeared on the other side of the wave both of these surfers sat up on their boards and watched as a White Shark circled around them. They used the next wave to paddle to shore. No one was injured.

One of the surfers, Fanie Moller, from Plettenberg Bay, said that it appeared that the shark was about 3 metres in length.

The NSRI and Save Our Seas Foundation (in association with local Municipalities) are urging bathers, paddlers and surfers to be aware of this phenomenon (of sharks migrating closer towards shore) and to be extremely cautious.

Allison Kock, of Save Our Seas Foundation, confirmed that Seal Island in False Bay is now showing signs of a decreased shark population lending evidence to the fact that the sharks normally found around Sea Island are migrating closer towards the shoreline.

Studies have shown that this trend occurs at around this time of year.

We are asking bathers, paddlers and surfers to exercise extreme caution in our waters.

(Bathers and Surfers have been cleared from the sea by shark spotters at Muizenberg and at Fish Hoek on numerous occasions over the past week after sharks were spotted close inshore).

A Senior Moment

A 98 year old woman in the UK wrote this letter to her Bank. The Bank Manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in The Times!!

Dear Sir, I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement, which, I admit, has been in place for only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account £30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to

your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your Bank has become. From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-andblood person.

My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your Bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your Bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.

Re: PROPOSED 66KV OVERHEAD POWERLINE FROM ROBBERG SUBSTATION TO A PROPOSED SUBSTATION NEAR THE WITTEDRIF ROAD JUNCTION WITH THE N2.

Reference: SHE 1562 Application Reference: 12/12/20/691 The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has granted authorisation, with conditions, for the above installation. Plans show that the high level overhead powerline is proposed from the ‘Robberg Substation’ to Old Nick and along the N2 to the Wittedrift turn-off and that it will cross the N2 twice.

It seems that a number of individuals and organisations who registered as Interested and Affected Parties during the EIA process were not informed of this Environmental Authorisation and may not be aware that they have the right to appeal the Department’s decision.

Anyone who finds themselves in this situation - and who believes that the proposal has unacceptably high environmental & visual impacts and/or that alternatives have not been adequately considered by the proponents - should urgently contact the environmental consultants and the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism.

Plett’s got Talent Auditions kick Started with a Bang

The much anticipated local talent search auditions has finally kick started last week with a bang as the organizers had visited Plett communities such as Qolweni, Kranshoek, New Horizons and the response in terms of support had been good in all the venues and the talent was amazing.

On Saturday evening the Simunye Hall was packed to capacity and there were so many groups and individuals who entered for this competition. The judges had a tough task to decide the winners as there were different genres of performing art as it was ranging from dance, drama and music. The likes of an unknown Nomfezeko who performed a poem proved that she is a great writer although she needs to improve a little on her presentation skills. Movers with Attitude the three guys who performed drama also impressed me. I had the opportunity to watch Chuck Rollers for the very first time - these boys from my hood really have what it takes to challenge Slow Poison which it seems so far are the favourites to win the competition looking to their standard in terms of being creative, energy and organised, as they were the only group that had the proper costumes. I was also surprised by the fine talent of the boy who was dancing for MP Squad with a young girl. They really have what it takes. Unfortunately they did not seem not really prepared for this

You must also consider the Bitou Kika Opera Monstrances that started the competition on a very low note. They will come out next time serious as they did not perform at their best in the first round but everybody knows what they are capable of. At the moment the only thing I can say is : May the best group win the auditions.
