We have come back totally exhausted but very enthused by the vibrant energy displayed in Jo’burg for the World Cup. The Pre-2010 concert celebration at Orlando stadium was fabulous. The camaraderie and goodwill and sheer fun was intoxicating! Despite the cold… we could happily have stayed all night. And then, when we were feeling a little forlorn to be getting back to work and routine, our trip back was so spectacular with a winter wonderland of snow on the mountains as we approached Plett from PE. Home is where the heart is and this Ed’s heart is firmly in Plett!

INTERESTING...Together with the draft budget a Performance Review for 2008/09 was presented to Council and is available at all libraries for your perusal. The Bitou Local Municipality is a category B Municipality within the Eden District Municipality. Bitou comprises the town of Plettenberg Bay, Keurboomsrivier, Kranshoek, Kurland, Natures Valley, Wittedrift and Volmoed. It is one of the smallest municipalities in terms of population. The 2007 Community Survey estimated that a total of 39.000 people reside within the municipal jurisdiction of Bitou which covers 991 square kilometres, a density of 39.4 people per square kilometre. The municipality has a relatively youthful population with children and youth together accounting for 64.7 % and adults 35.3%.The working age population (15-64 years) accounted for 64.3 % and person 65 years older accounted for 6.1% with males at 50.3% and women at 49.7%. Bitou unemployment rate at 15.7% is lower than that of Eden District at 18.5%. The poor and vulnerable receive assistance through both the Municipality's Indigent Assistance programme as well as the national social programme. A total of 1664 households benefited from indigent assistance whilst 5680 beneficiaries accessed social grants. BITOU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY TO ALL BITOU RESIDENTS AND VISITORS BITOU WATER CRISIS – PLEASE HELP! As the town is approaching the 6 weeks June Holidays due to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the Bitou Municipality will once again have to engage in a Water Education and Awareness Campaign as previously done during the December 2009 and Easter holiday season. A correspondence was written to all residents in December 2009 and March 2010 on behalf of Bitou Municipality by the Municipal Manager regarding the Water Crisis that the Southern Cape region is currently faced with. It was addressed to all the residents of the Bitou Municipal area and was distributed to each and every dwelling. This is another notice for all residence and visitors for water conservation during the June 2010 holiday season. Residents are urged to save water. For those that were not here during the previous holidays, I hereby wish to reiterate the following: The Bitou Municipal area has been declared a drought disaster area. The present drought is 100-150yr and there is a strong possibility that the present situation might continue in the coming months. South African Weather Service has forecasted a below normal rainfall in the region The Town area is the biggest user and gardens account for 30% of that use. It is against this background that residents of Bitou and visitors to the area are urged to adhere to special measures regarding water conservation. The restrictions include the following: Limit water usage to 65ℓ/person/day which equates to 10kℓ/month. No irrigation is allowed from tap water (only grey water may be used). Taking water from fire hydrants is prohibited. Use of hosepipes is prohibited Filling of swimming pools is prohibited Taking/Pumping water from boreholes between 07h00 until 19h00 is prohibited A more concerted effort by the Municipality to make residents and visitors aware about the situation will be through local media, posters & banners, to assist improvement on water consumption. In the interest of Bitou Municipality residents, the Municipality will have no choice but to intensify its efforts of reducing water consumption by introducing punitive measures. The Municipality has embarked on some measures since December 2009, which are. Introduction of a Drought Management Policy Introduction of penalties for users who exceed 25kℓ/month Installation of water flow restriction devices. The overall target is 40% reduction in water consumption by the Bitou Municipal residents. Lunchbox Theatre heads for the Grahamstown National Arts Festival
On 18 June, the Lunchbox Theatre team of Mncedisi Ncedani, Amanda Valela, Spida Matyhila, Nomzamo Maga and Stuart Palmer will head off to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival for a week of shows. They are taking two of their very popular family theatre shows to perform at The Masonic Hall from 20-26 June. This group started when Stuart Palmer held auditions in Plettenberg Bay in November 2008 as a skills development and job creation program for local artists. Since then the team has grown into a fully profession band of actors, dancers and facilitators. They have performed over 110 shows to more than 15 000 audience members in two short years. The trip to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival is yet another stepping stone in the developmental path of this team. The festival offers a wide range of shows across all performance genres and the actors are encouraged to see as many shows as their hectic schedule allows. They will also gain valuable experience in the field of marketing, publicity and media liaisons as well as the technical side of stage management and lighting. The two shows they are presenting are The Whale Show – an old favourite that made its debut at the festival in 2004. This show uses comedy, mime, physical theatre and a huge whale puppet to swirl the audience into the wonderful world of the whale. Khokho’s Suitcase takes traditional African animal folklore tales and weaves them into a very engaging and interactive story that reflects the stories messages in a modern day context. Update on Tshisha Talent
The audition phase of the Lunchbox Theatre, Bitou Tourism Tshisa Talent Competition has drawn to a close and the organizers were blown away by the talented artists they have seen. Auditions were held in Kranshoek, Kwanokuthula, New Horizons, Bossiesgif, The Crags and Wittedrift. Over 100 artists showcased their works to a panel of judges this week. The artists selected from each community will take part in the semi-finals concerts, which will be open to the public. Watch an eye on local newspapers and posters for a chance to see the best artists in your local community. The Epic Tales of Bahia Formosa By Arne O Meyer Introduction: There is a little bay, some say an Eden a paradise - just around the corner from the Cape of Good Hope and the southern Tip of Africa. This is the tale of the recent past of this alluring little place. It has been known by many names... but its most enduring is perhaps the Baia Formosa - Bay of Beauty. Named for the dominating peak Formosa which in majestic counterpoint to the Ponta Delgada - the Dolphin Peninsula now called Robberg or Seal Mountain, which together define the sanctuary of this bay. This little place, Bitou in the district of Eden, has a far more interesting history than most who now have the privilege of living in its environs - or those others who visit it - realise. The Embarkation: "For it was also from the caves and kloofs of this Eden habitat that the human journey itself commenced several millenia ago. It is in these caves and forests, along this shoreline, and along the great valley that ends here that the spark of the human imagination caught fire, a glow that would come to light the world as the torch as it were was carried on the epic journey if our people. It is also a place that teaches us that we are all brothers and sisters and are all of the same root; leaves on twigs on branches from the same tree trunk. A tree of humanity, that was and is rooted and planted in Africa, like the majestic Baobab. And that wherever we may find ourselves, we are all, originally and in essence:- African". Yes, it all happened here. Africa, the land of genesis and Eden. "We learnt to walk on these rocks. We learnt to make fire with these rocks. We learnt to love on these rocks. We learnt to paint on these stones. We trod them as we learnt to survive using these very these stones". The Voyagers: "On the other sides of the earth, which on those days was flat, only a few peoples - who had milennia ago themselves migrated out of their hearthland of Africa - had developed the means to (re-)discover the land of their birth. Long ago sailors also ventured forth from the dry desert lands of the Star-Pointed Stone Mountains where the
sacred river spilt into the deserts. And the trolls on the Dragon ships of the icy lands in the North made their brave expolits to the South. Great fleets were imagined and floated in the eastern Land of the Sons of Heaven dwelling in a legendary Forbidden City to find the eight corners of the earth. And eventually, in an unlikely venue; the dry arid lands of Iberia and Lusitania, a parched arid land, which had been so far good for growing grapes, mighty ships were conceived and constructed to voyage forth. Suddenly the pioneering flash to discover and explore those ends of the earth - and perchance to fall off the ends flickered and took flame in the lamps and candles of the great brigs from these sea-faring cultures. Much as the glow from that ancient african fire would launch the human spirit to land on the governor of our oceans, much gazed at by our ancestors: the moon. A journey of discovery and exploration that defines us and is our best hope for the future, for as a thinker once said, even as we are in the gutter we still can look at the stars. Those stars guided the fleets of the prodigal sons, descendants of Africa, to return to her shores once more. Thus, is it rumoured that when the rocks of Robberg and the Eden Caves confide their geological wisdom and relate to us what they have seen over the centuries; or when the giant towering Yellowoods sing in the Cape gales, we hear of tales of bravery and heroism, love and discovery... So dear reader, should you be curious about what the rocks whisper, and the trees sing, and listen very, very closely, read on... For, if you invite your imagination to hear their whisper, then perhaps you shall...."

Thirteen dogs were spayed this week. Thirteen, that are now unable to have puppies. The mountain before us is still high, but not as high as the 10,000 unwanted dog’s & cats that are euthanased in South Africa, each and every week. Thank you to everyone who has showed me kindness and respect, and helped me to continue on this mission. Regarding the “Notice For Paws” in last weeks papers. Unfortunately, we do not know who the writer is, as the fax received, was anonymous. I need to set the facts straight, as she/he is more confused than anyone else. I do take a lot of animals in for euthanasing. Many have broken bones, severely neglected old fight wounds, many are just unwanted and not fed, many are without owners, many have very bad mange with little or no hair. Some are puppies in very poor health, due to the mother’s condition. It always breaks my heart to do this, but I cannot leave the animals suffering. Paws have always paid for this service, for which I am grateful. I have no personal funds for any welfare work and rely solely on the support of the Bitou CVC. Paws have to date never paid towards any treatments for animals I have taken in to the respective Vets. The Bitou Community Veteriniary Clinic subsidises sterilizations done at all three Veteriniary practices and does NOT get any financial support from the National Body. Well done to Paws on your mass sterilization last week-end. My goal remains the same, to have as many female dogs spayed as possible. This will put an end to all the unwanted dogs and the unnecessary euthanasing. as our own boy oub is back home. It was like a dream in 2004 when FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced that the world cup will be hosted here at home in 2010, I still remember that Saturday Pirates were playing at the old Telkom Park Stadium in PE. Now is that time that was like it will never come true when people were saying things like they’ll be watching the first world cup in stadium and they’ll be driving their own cars with own houses and wives and I was part of those people but unfortunately time never waited for me to achieve those things. Now I could not believe when I see tertiary students around the township who are saying they will be with us for six weeks as schools are closed so that every body can feel it, as it is here. One of them Oub Mzantsi, was born in Knysna were he was part of a group called Siyazenzela that was doing Kwaito music and pantsula dance. In 2004 he moved to Plett calling himself P O Box as he was
they performed in different venues. In 2008 members went in different directions others went to study out of Plett. In this year Oub went to study LLB degree at the University of Pretoria where he met with the likes of K.O. (music manager), Psychalist, KZee and Nyembz (hip hop editor in Hype magazine) and join them at dream Discover Entertainment where he became the first Xhosa rapper and he already recorded 10 songs with a hit track Ixesha Lam that received air plays at Jozi fm, Pretoria fm and Yfm, never be broke that feature Percpex. Oub is not planning to release an album soon but to make his music available to his closest fan club via street team and telesales. He is following on the footsteps of another local rapper who is making a name for himself in Jozi, on promoting the original from Plett new hip hop sub genre called Xhosalized which is a hip hop with no limits as you can add many elements such as kwaito to commercialize it. EXTENDED N2 TOLLROAD TO THE GRAGS Last Saturday, I discovered to my dismay, that I could not reach Blaauwkranz Forest station coming from Plett on the N2 to go hiking, without paying tollfees. I was required to pay R 33 to get on, and again R 33 to get of the R102 road bridge in order to be able to return home! Subsequently, I left my car at the tollgate and proceeded on foot to avoid paying R 66, which money I did not have with me in any case. My question is, why on earth were these pay points erected now, as there is no alternative access, Nature’s Valley Grootrivier pass being closed for repairs in progress? Could this not wait until after completion of the repairs and the reopening of the R102 to Nature’s Valley? After all, the N2 section from the Grags to the R102 bridge has always been free for all road users since its construction a decade or more ago. I do understand why the National Road Agency wants to include this section as a toll road, but why to do this now while the alternative route is being repaired , is beyond my comprehension. Is there no communication between national roads and provincial roads? It shows a total disregard for us locals and authoritarian attitude, which is not acceptable in a civilized democratic society. that I have not seen or heard any reaction from the public to the erection of these pay points since 1st March this year. May be, that is exactly why, as people don’t want to complain and accept anything enforced upon them. What about these poor people in Covie? I hope my complaint will help to get some reaction. of advancing to the second round of World Cup Once again sport had proved its power on uniting people, as you may remember the racial challenges that were faced by our country few months back, but the past week we were all singing the different tunes as we all felt the world cup. Thursday evening there was the vibrant sound of vuvuzelas and the cars that were moving around the streets of Kwanokuthula in celebration of the world cup. I started to imagine how it will be like if South Africa can win the tournament the vuvuzela had made noise almost the whole night in the township. On Friday morning I went to New Horizons in the Community Hall I could see it, it is here with the flags that were decorating the hall as all the community halls in all the Bitou communities were having big screens for supporting to get together and watch the most game. In the afternoon I went back to Kwanokuthula the most vibrant township in Plettenberg Bay around the taxi rank people were moving up and down in South African colours, vuvuzelas, makarabas and flags the cars were also hooting you could feel the world cup festive mood by the time I manage to be in front of a TV screen it was national anthems for both teams that were about to play the opening game of 2010 World Cup. The moment of truth had begun after the kick off as the Mexicans were all over South Africans asking a lot of questions with the likes of Da Santos who trouble our defense, if it was not the excellent performance of our goal keeper Itumelang Khune who was at his best we would had let in many goals in the first half as the game was very tense. In the second half our boys came back a lot of confidence with their short passes that trouble the Mexicans and that resulted to the opening goal by Simphiwe Tshabalala, what a super strike and a goal that shook the whole nation the first ever goal in 2010 World Cup, unfortunately in the last 10 minutes the Mexicans managed to balance the score lines and forcing the game to be a 1-1 draw which still put Bafana Bafana in good position of advancing to the second round of the competition as they still to face Uruguay on Wednesday by the time you read this article you will already know the results of that game.
