We are so thrilled to be hosting the IDT (Independent Development Trust) for a Development Week in our town. This year marks 20years of their operation. (The IDT were responsible for building Murray High School in our area.) There are a whole lot of people who have contributed to development in our country and locally who are sharing valuable experiences and advice with NGO’s and local government. What an amazing opportunity! The Hon. Deputy Minister of Public Works, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu inspired us all with her keynote address - Development is always a personal choice. Our responsibility is to empower people and communities with the right tools to make the right choices and to listen and keep each other’s dreams alive. A very dynamic, practical lady who also walks her talk! We trust that all the discussions will bear fruit and leave a lasting legacy so that the fight against intergenerational poverty is won! Have a wonderful fun filled week in our beautiful Bay and surrounds.

What’s on at the Movies?

MAO’S LAST DANCER Drama - This multi-award-winning arthouse release is based on a true story. At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet. In English and Mandarin with English subtitles. CAST: Bruce Greenwood, Kyle MacLachlan, Joan Chen, Chi Cai, Amanda Schull, Shuangbao Wang

SALT Action - A Russian informer tells his interogator that she is actually an undercover Russian spy, about to kill a visiting President. She disagrees and professes her innocence, but her superiors are not taking any chances. So she has to go on the run to try and clear her name, save the world and get home in time to make supper. The storyline just provides pegs to hang numerous chase and high-scenes on, as Angelina shows James and Jason how things should be done. CAST: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski, August Diehl, Daniel Pearce

ON SHOW ON SHOW ON SHOW ON SHOW

On the 6 December 2008, Eagle Encounters was opened as a branch from Stellenbosch. I had the privilege to work at Eagle Encounters with Dennis Robson, who is currently running the Plettenberg Bay Eagle Encounters. Never in my life have I met a man with such passion and dedication to his work. In the time that I volunteered there, Dennis taught me about these magnificent birds, from the hunting techniques these birds use to catch their prey, to how to clean a water bowl properly and to feed some of the raptors. After a period of time, Dennis gave me the opportunity to handle one of the birds, and I can tell you this, it was one of the most amazing things I have done in my life. I handled one of the smaller birds (a common or rock Kestrel). You would never think that a small bird like this would have such amazing strength and agility. The little time spent working with this bird, I learnt much more than what you can read from a textbox or someone can tell you about. Eagle Encounters is a non-profit raptor rehabilitation centre where the aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and release birds of prey. The point is also to raise awareness in the community about birds of prey in the area. If you are looking for something to do, I strongly recommend that you visit Eagle Encounters which is situated at The Heath (25km from Knysna and 7km from Plettenberg Bay) and watch a very educational flying display where Dennis flies a variety of trained, non-releasable birds of prey freely around you. I just want to say thank you very much to Dennis and Janet for everything you have done for me, the opportunity to work with you and to be close to the raptors and the unforgettable memories. Bitou Business Buzz

NO PHONE ZONE...can save lives! The well-known Television presenter Oprah has started a campaign whereby people sign a pledge promising not to use a hand held cell phone in the car. At her show a couple was introduced whose son was killed in a car crash while using his cell phone. What prompted me to write about this subject was the unbecoming behavior of a bakkie driver who made a right angle turn from Piesang Valley road into Robberg road with cell phone held to his ear! His open bakkie was occupied by several workers at the back. One can imagine what could happen with only one hand on the steering wheel. At Council level, a few years ago, I raised the concern over open bakkies and trucks loaded with workers often sitting on the side of the vehicle with no protection and nothing to hold onto in case of a sudden stop or swerve. It is not uncommon to see vehicles overloaded with tyres almost flat due to the excessive weight. There are laws in place that forbid the above. It is hoped that our traffic department 'show some muscle' and thereby prevent a major accident. The signing of a pledge, to avoid hand held cell phones to be used while driving, should be considered. Greetings, Ald. Pierre Koep.

10 Canine Commandments

1) My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you buy me. 2) Give me to time to understand what you want from me. 3) Place your trust in me. It’s crucial to my well-being. 4) Don’t be angry with me for long, and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I only have you. 5) Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it’s speaking to me. 6) Be aware that however you treat me, I’ll never forget it. 7) Remember before you hit me: I have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand, but I choose not to bite you. 8) Before you scold me for being un-cooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, or I’ve been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak. 9) Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. 10) Go with me on difficult journeys, Never say: “I can’t bear to watch it,” or “Let it happen in my absence.” everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember that I love you.

Letter via the Editor I read that the ANC is sending cadres of its comrades to China to find out how it has become one of the biggest economies in the world. The contingent probably assumes that it will be instructed on how Capitalist Pigs and their Running Dogs will go to hell sometime soon. Nonetheless China does have some useful concepts on how to improve an economy: -. The turning point in the Chinese economy came in the early nineties when the then Chairman Deng made the startling (for the Chinese) announcement that their economy must adopt the rigors of market forces. The notable exception to this principle however is the shielding of their currency from the outside world. That said they are slowly changing their approach and exporters to China can now price their goods in yuan, rather than dollars, and deposit the proceeds in offshore corporate accounts, mostly

in Hong Kong. -. One of the building blocks in their upsurge is that it is based on teeming hordes of productive, relatively cheap workers and not a preponderance of toy toying, unproductive and relatively expensive workforce. With that sound base China can, for now, afford government controlled industries and political appointees as CEOs. It cannot, of course, last. Whether the Chinese will teach the cadres the dangers of a sclerotic bureaucracy is also open to speculation. -. China keeps a strict control over its Unions and rampaging strikers get very short shrift. -. If the Chinese are at least reasonably conscientious in their role as teachers, they will tell the cadres that awarding government and municipal contracts on racial lines and ignoring merit, thereby being nowhere near genuine transformation, is a cost to the economy. There is a price to pay, sooner or later, when tenders are awarded on a HTMBWADA (how to make a buck without actually doing anything) basis, and the brunt of that cost is borne by an ever decreasing number of taxpayers. To be remembered when awarding tenders for say airports and restaurants.

Linda Stephen Volofu’s Death

ENRICO HAS GONE CRAZY !!!!

a Loss to the entire Community

Last week Wednesday 6 October Kwanokuthula residents payed their last respects to Stephen Linda Volofu at the Simunye Hall where his memorial service was held. Friends, supporters, local soccer players as well as his fellow Christians attended this service to remember him. Linda arrived in Plett in 1995 December He made his name by forming two teams Manchester United and Stephen United that played a vital role in keeping the kids young people away from the rough streets of Kwanokuthula. On the 26 of September his teams were on the way to Pedi when one of the taxis rolled 5 times and took Linda’s life. His memorial service was directed by Sipho Godoma a gospel producer, singer and a reverend was the opportunity for the Plettonians who could not travel to Ngqamakwe , his place of birth in the Eastern Cape where he was buried on the 10th of October. It was very emotional to hear his boys from both his teams sharing their experience. Ntando Mphithi of Stephen United met him in 2006. He said Linda loved them very much and since he was very strict and professional his critics used to say he was very serious and many teams did not like his teams as they were always trying to steal his players something Linda really fought for during his life time, Ntando also encouraged his teammates on not giving up now that their coach is no longer with them. Victor Tose a former Manchester United player who knew Linda from 1995 is one of the few players who was with him when he started the team and shared with the public how Linda built it to what it is today. On his conclusion he asked the question that concerned everybody “who is going to look after the kids” now that Linda is gone. I was very touched when young Unathi Ndawo told us of how the accident happened, at that young age these boys had to go through such an experience. It was very emotional when the boy said the taxi went out of its way the first time and he turned the steering wheel while the driver was asleep after the

taxi went to another lane, the driver lost control and the taxi rolled 5 times and the rest Is history. It was amazing to hear that Linda did not only form soccer teams. He also formed a congregational Church in Plett which later he gave space for his fellow Christians to attend church services at his house. I wonder about you and me. What will be said about us except destroying, that was Mr. Godoma’s question as he was so impressed about the role that had been played be the late Linda Volofu in Plett. May his soul rest in peace. After the resurrection Christ appeared to Paul and instructed him to tell Jew and Gentile that no longer could man earn his salvation by any works, but that God had changed the method “so to speak” and that salvation was only attainable by faith in the finished work of His Son, Jesus Christ. Writing to the Galatians, Paul made this abundantly clear when he said: “Yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” [Gal.2:16 ASV]

A Thought for the Week.

“For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Romans 8:38-39] The verses quoted above are a source of wonderful comfort for every true Christian. In essence Paul, the writer, is saying that there is absolutely nothing that can come between God’s love and someone who is a believer in Christ. Paul, in particular, is the one who reveals in his letters to us the “in Christ” message, which is in direct contrast to the old way of doing things that applied under the Law. Before Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross man was commanded and able to please God by the strict observance of a great number of laws and rules and by offering all kinds of sacrifices for sin.

To the church in Ephesus he declared the same message: “For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” [Eph.2:8-9] Notice particularly the following parts: “By grace” – because of God’s unmerited favour; “through faith”- it is by believing only and even “that [is] not of yourselves” faith comes from God; “it is a gift” – something you don’t deserve and cannot earn; “not of works lest anyone should boast” – you cannot do anything to receive it – you just have to believe it. Anyone refusing to believe this and adding to Christ’s offering in any way, any one teaching that we, too, have to do ‘this or that’ in order to find favour with God over and above faith in Christ alone, is – according to Paul – cursed! “For as many as are out of works of the Law, these are under a curse.”

Paul is quite adamant about the truth of the Gospel as preached by him, when he states: “… in a day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” [Rom.2:16] The question today is simply this: Which gospel are you believing in – is it Paul’s gospel where the focus is on Christ and on His work only, or do you believe in a gospel where, although you have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on your behalf, you nevertheless feel that you have to “bring your part” in order to “complete things” to get God to fully accept you - what does your life reflect? PRESS RELEASE

IDT Development Week

Poverty eradication to come under the spotlight at Development Week Indaba As part of its 20 years of existence celebrations, the Independent Development Trust (IDT) is hosting its Annual Development Week Indaba at the Piesang Valley Hall in the area of Plettenberg Bay, in the Bitou Municipality in the Western Cape, from 11 October until 14 October 2010, in a bid to improve and refine methods of eradicating poverty in South Africa. The Development Week Indaba is in line with the UN’s meeting of expects which was held in September in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the main focus was on Poverty Eradication through a robust exchange of ideas among independent experts, government officials, representatives from the United Nations system, regional development banks, and civil society from around the world. The aim of the Indaba is to engage and facilitate discussions with communities on the progress of the IDT’s projects and to examine the effect these projects have had in the creation of sustainable livelihoods in order to reduce poverty. The first Development Week Indaba for this year was held in Nkandla in KwaZulu Natal in April this year and according to the Chief Executive Officer of the IDT, Thembi Nwedamutswu, it was a resounding success as the conference managed not only build the profile of Nkandla, but the IDT was able to mobilise other stakeholders to take an interest on the Nkandla community. “But the whole aim and purpose of the Development Week Indaba is not to benefit one but every community in the country,” she explained. “We want to facilitate dialogue on a whole range of developmental issues in order to

come up with better modules and sustainable interventions.” To achieve this goal, the Development Week brings together various organisations, academics, experts, civil society and practitioners to debate and interrogate at length cross cutting subjects and themes as well as share new ideas on contemporary matters of common interest. At the conference, guests include the Honourable Deputy Minister of Public Works Ms. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, the Executive Mayor of Bitou Municipality Mr Alderman Mvimbi, Ms. Isabel Loubser of the Afrika Leadership Development Institute, Executive Chairperson of South African New Economics Network (SANE)Mr Joseph Edozien and discussion topics will range from “Poverty alleviation through sustainable development” , “ABCD community experiences” to “Social engagement through a community capacity enhancement programme”. Nwedamutswu emphasizes that the knowledge obtained from the gathering helps the IDT to refine its development model and sharpens its intervention methodology when it comes to the numerous development projects that the organisation has undertaken. One of these projects includes the Contractor Development Programme and Nwedamutswu says this project as well as others, benefit tremendously from the Development Week Indaba in relation to implementation. However the IDT is not the only beneficiary, the local Bitou Municipality is set to reap long term rewards from hosting the Development Week Indaba as the Director of Administration at the municipality, Thomas Nqolo, echoes this sentiment: “We are excited as this happens right after, the Deputy President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlhante’s visit to the Bitou Municipality in August 2010. During his visit certain impoverished areas in the municipality that require

Massage therapists required for season, to work at the new Forest Nature Spa in the Crags and on Central Beach, Plett. Contact Louise 083 675 7161 louise@forestnaturespa.com

He said this is also an opportunity for the local community to gain access to services and development opportunities by taking a lead in finding solutions to poverty eradication in their own area while contributing towards the fight against poverty in South Africa. “In the long term, the outcomes of the Development Week will form part our Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which is based on the needs of our community and also looks at the long term sustainability of service delivery. In terms of the communities' needs, it will inform us of which resources are required (human and budgetary) in our quest to achieve long term sustainable service delivery and planning.” CIGARS-CUBANS and other available at Happy Smoker, Market Square

Surprise! Granny has a baby.

An unexpected and very welcome Surprise was born at Monkeyland's special home this week. We were all shaking our heads in disbelief because little Surprise is the 1st offspring born at this Special Monkey Home. The Special Monkey home www.tamhf.org.za is home to various primates with special needs. Some of the monkeys whom live there are disabled, some are mentally disturbed, some are just very old and crippled by life in some way - always due to human mistreatment and ignorance. One such individual, we named Perfect, made his way to Monkeyland in 2006. Perfect has a missing arm and he has a leg which has been broken and pinned so many times that it now stiffly stands 45 degrees upright. He had 2 options in his life - euthanasia or hope that Monkeyland welcomes you to live at The Special Monkey Home. When we heard about his plight we simply said YES. Who on earth would want to euthanise a Lemur if it was not in severe pain and discomfort? In cases such as the above we never ask where the animal originates from. It could be anywhere. Animals with disabilities do not make good show pieces, so if you are cripple, crazy or if you have expensive medical needs you are basically declared obsolete. The next step for you is death or hopefully - Monkeyland. The box Perfect arrived in was marked FEMALE RINGTAIL LEMUR. Needless to say, Perfect was a male and rather well-endowed too. Our CEO named him Perfect because he was just the opposite unwanted, discarded, and sent away from where ever it is he came from. To us here at Monkeyland, he was simply perfect. About 8 months later Uno arrived. She was sent to us because she lost her eye in a freak accident. She also had a missing digit on each of her feet and hands - we thought the name UNO suited her well. Uno at age 16 was a quite a few years older than Perfect, but we

knew that they would provide each other much needed companionship. Ringtail lemurs are only susceptible to fall pregnant 24 hours of the year,6 of these being the most vital peak period. Ringtails basically have the built in birth control us humans would love to have! The tail of the Ringtail lemur, apart from the individual finger print, serves as a bar code for the rest of the group. When Ringtails walk (they live in large groups), they walk with their tails up in the air like an aerial, and the swing of the tails are always in synchronisation so that the individuals (especially the babies) in the back can read, follow and identify the Ringtails ahead of them. The lead Ringtail's tail determines the swing of the tail and the pace the group walks at. The lead Ringtail is always female. We hope that Surprise will gain all the above knowledge from her

disabled parents, and that she will grow-up strong, much loved and brave. In the near future she will need to be integrated into a larger group in the Monkeyland forest. What her mum and dad teach her during the next year is vital. But knowing her parents, we have faith that all that happens will be just perfect. Lara Mostert – Monkeyland

PAWS Report Back

Despite the rain which Plett needs so desperately, our annual 4 x 4 PAWS Trail was a great success. 32 owners and dogs made up the field. A big thank you to all of you who braved the elements and, with your dogs, enjoyed the walk. We would like to thank the following people who contributed to making the day such a pleasurable one: Pastor Colleen Springer for giving of your time to bless the gathering, which was much appreciated by all, Dr. Brendan Tindall who led the walk and gave generously of his time and, last but not least, to all the helpers whose time and effort was invaluable. A special thank you to Royal Canin for their sponsorship of this event. Each dog was given a bowl and a voucher from Royal Canin who also gave prizes to the winning dogs in various categories. Thank you Andre and the crew of Royal Canin. The dogs were judged by Charl and Brendan and the following are the winners: Most Obedient Dog: Delta Best Trick : Saber Senior Dog of the Day: Taco Smallest Dog: Penny The main prize for the day was POOCH OF THE YEAR. Many thanks to Ocean Safaris for once again sponsoring this prize. Your support is greatly appreciated. Pooch of the Year: Roxy A special award was given to Cheryl Aniley’s beautiful dog, Withond by Royal Canin for best attendance. Although getting on in age, Withond has been on every PAWS 4 x 4 Trail. Well done and thank you. Another special prize was given by Royal Canin to a rescue dog, Caly. ZigZag will embroider Caly’s name on a collar which was sponsored by Horse & Hound. We were thrilled to see the number of rescue dogs that participated in the walk. Thank you to those who have given these animals a loving home. PAWS would like to thank the companies and people who so generously sponsored this special event: Royal Canin, Ocean Safaris, The Deli Factory, Horse and Hound, Masons Packaging, ZigZag Embroidery. Thanks o the local papers for advertising the event and publishing the results. MUIR OOGKUNDIGES… uit u oogpunt gesien. Melville Sentrum, Plett. 044-533 1335. NEED PRINTING? After all the news on the radio about the police apprehending this paedophile in our midst, the cost that must have gone into observing him for weeks etc, and the police proud with their helicopter swoop etc etc. Wow! guess what ! He gets out on R500.00 bail, what is our justice system doing when releasing them, destroying hundreds of young lives is what they are allowing. We know of others in our community to, why shouldn't we be informed they live amongst us, they destroy lives but yet theirs are protected. So sad when we shake our heads because we protect ourselves and get caught up in the legal system and we end up being the bad ones but the real perpetrators get to do it again. Very sad indeed. Letter via the Editor BREAKING NEWS The following businesses will be closing down with immediate effect ABC, G, Z and many, many more I have been out of town for a while but been back for a month now. Everywhere I go someone will rub their hands in glee and say “did you know that so and so is closing down” About the only thing that is not closing down are the big mouths of

the people that seem to take great delight in spreading these rumours, seemingly wishing that someone is going to fail. Being in business is tough enough and in these difficult economic times even more so. All the businesses in Plett (even the flower seller on the side of the road) has an enormous responsibility because it is not just the owners and their families that they have to feed, but they have a responsibility to the people they employ, the people that these employees have to feed, educate, nurse through sickness and health. Take a business that may employ five people, but the extended family can be as much as 20, 30 or more that is being supported. This is a big responsibility and all the businesses need your support, if not financial but through good words and vocal support. One other thing, remember, the more business close down, the more unemployed, the more hungry and the end result, well I leave that to your imagination Support our local businesses and help grow our community – not destroy it. 2010 Murray High Farewell

7th October on my birthday What a beautiful night for the grade twelves of Murray High School, as they all dressed up in beautiful outfits. These children looked so smart, they were breathtaking. The way they smiled for the camera it reminded me of my Matric Ball (farewell). I spoke to the Principal, Deputy Principal and some of the staff members who were all positive about the event. As Deputy Principal Mr Gelembe said matric farewell of 2010 was quite different from the others, this one had support from parents and you could see the joy and smiles on their faces when the children (students) where leaving from

school to the venue (Nguni Restaurant), the venue aback Mr Gelembe’s eyes he was very surprised, he said it’s a very nice place, the music, the children were very beautiful, the food was the best and most beautiful ever. Miss Tyuluba said everything was organized. I enjoyed every moment of the event and the food was tasty and the venue was the best ever. As I walked around I called a couple of students asking them individually how do they feel about the event, what’s happening in them as now. Masixole Msizi answered with a smile on his face saying it’s a fantastic evening, the food is the best ever I have never had a beautiful evening like this one before in my whole life. He also said he is well prepared for the exams. Zandile Mqamelo said everything is great, but it’s slightly been boring “only” because there is no booze… but I am looking forward for the exams and this event it’s a big memory for my life ever. Then I got to the point were I have had a little chat with the couple of the year. I only said this because the were together since the event had begun they had been walking up and down as a married couple. Vusumzi aka Mavusani and Anathi were very happy about the matric farewell telling me they couldn’t wait for it, they said it was the best event ever and hopefully they are well prepared for their exams at the same time . 2010 Matrics are going to improve Murray High school as we all know Murray High is the best school in Bitou. We are going to make 99% said Mavusi and Anathi . Mr Mnweba was impressed about the speaking. They maintain focus as a key to success. He is impressed, because the staff is sharing informality with the students and self-esteem goes with confidence and their outfit is very stunning. On behalf of the school we are wishing 2010 grade 12’s to pass very well so that next year they could go to different institutions to fulfill their dreams. The last message from the Deputy Principal to Matrics is to finish the last road of their exams, put all your effort and lets do this together. Headmaster says the event will encourage the students to work harder because no one will want to stay behind after this event. Thanks to Nguni’s GM and the staff you guys were the best.
