We trust that all the women in Plett had a wonderful day on Monday 9th, and that everyone else who got to have the day off did something special with it. I went to the get-together at KwaNokuthula where despite the icy weather, a really great time was had by all. It doesn’t take much to get the girls dancing and chatting together and the delicious catering by Minks also helped. We were urged not to forget that the fight against unjustness is not over - a national health insurance is being debated and we all need to add our voices to ensure efficient, effective health care for all. It is also important that women take an active role in all spheres of life, not as copy-cat men, but with the compassion and empathy that our nurturing nature embodies. So happy to let everyone know that our Charity Shop has opened. We are in the Atmar Centre, High Street, behind Pep Stores. What a fantastic turnout we had on our 1st day. To everyone who kindly donated jumble, thank you so much for making all this possible. The public actually have shares in the shop, so please visit. What a relief to know we will always have the funds available to continue with our sterilization Campaign. The scarey part is that we will always be needing to replace stock. Any jumble can be dropped off at the shop, or I will gladly collect. We will still be spaying 3 dogs a day. For this reason, the shop will open at 9h00 and close at 16h00 Thankfully, we have not had any upsetting stories this week. Our aim is to continue sterilizing, preventing unwanted litters and putting an end to unnecessary euthenasing. I am looking for a home for a 2 year old little Chihauhau type long haired female She is snow white with a sharp little
face. Loves children and is just a proper little lap dog. Should anyone be interested in adopting her, please contact Marine Way Animal Hospital. On the evening of the 28th July 2010 Curves Plettenberg Bay facilitated a woman’s event to congratulate their members and associated business for their involvement in the World Cup promotion and Stronger Together Campaign. The In Club World Cup Promotion was successful in dividing the membership into different teams with members scoring goals for workout attendance, setting weight goals and learning their teams National Anthem. The members also participated in weekly activities in line with the World Cup. So even although South Africa did not win the World Cup, they were the winning team in our in club soccer promotion! The winning team of Curves Plett South Africa included: Sandra van der Merwe, Taffy Stewart, Gladys Lugg, Suzette Robertson, Salome Janse van Vuuren, Sue Tindall, Joyce Ray, Anne Beale, Stephanie Mayne, Lorna Thompson and Johanna Daniels. A Thought for the Week.
James 2:23. [MKJV] "And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God." True friendship with another human being is probably one of the most wonderful relationships that any person can experience in this life and it is something that needs to be cherished and guarded. But how would you like to be called a friend of God? The Bible informs us that Abraham was called a friend of God - we read in James 2:23: "And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God." The reason why God's Word gives him that special name is because he believed God and he trusted in the Lord with all of his life and repeatedly proved it by his actions. When God initially called Abraham to leave his father's house and to travel to an unknown foreign land that God had promised to give to him and his descendants, he did not argue but, trusting in God's word and promise, he immediately departed. Years later when he was already at a very old age, God promised him a son and then, after the
boy was born and a young man, God asked him to sacrifice his son and once again he did not question God but proceeded to prepare for the offering – until God stopped him when He saw his obedience and trust. But do you know what? – you and I can actually be even more than friends of God! Through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sins, the way was prepared for all who put their trust in Christ not just to become friends of God, but children of God. John states: "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in his name, He gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." [John 1:12-13] However, I want you to realize that this expression "received Him" goes much deeper than merely believing mentally that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; it is much more than a little prayer asking Him to come into your life to become your Saviour. The Greek word used here is lambano" which translates as "actively taking hold of", "to seize", "to obtain". John is actually implying that we should take hold of Jesus Christ in order that He may be our very life. Letter via the Editor Has anyone noticed that the FIFA World Cup has finished? I was so distressed when the wonderful banners weren’t hung correctly for all our visitors to see. No one appeared to know what to do with them. Now the World Cup is over...we still have to view these bits of material flapping around in the wind, getting caught up in the Christmas decorations and will shortly, no doubt, be in shreds. Garvey’s Ghost is the oldest band in Plett as it was formed in 1990 by Ras Judah and Ras Joseph in Bossiesgif with the purpose of educating youth about Rastafarian way of life and righteousness. In 1994 two other Rastafarians joined the band to make it to be a quartet. Back then the support they had was mostly from ANC youth league members as they performed in its functions said Ras Judah who acknowledge the late Reni Tap as a person who acted as their co-ordinator. He offered them a place to rehearse and organised performances for the band. It was not easy those days as the apartheid was still at its peak said Judah as took me back in one of their performances whereby the police attacked them with teargas while the crew was on stage during the bossiesgif chaos when places like Vuyani were burned down. Now from the four members of the 90’s there are only three left as one of them (Ras Dan) passed away but they had other two members with the youngest in 23 years old Ras Khush aka Nkululeko who joined the band at the tender age of 11 and learned to play drums. Here in Plett the band had performed mostly in Bitou Tourism events such as Street Carnival that usually takes place in December annually. Last year they did backing for the Cape Town Reggae band the Dread Kings in Grahamstown National Art Festival, and they also featured with the same band in the Rastafarian Festival in Cape Town. Recently they performed in Knysna’s 118th Earth Day of Haile Selassie organised by House of Judah at Judah Square - an annual event. The band wishes to record their first album but the challenges are the resources and lack of support in terms of sponsorship. The Probus ladies were treated to delicious lunch at Kitchen Café and a very informative talk by Henk Niewoudt from Nature Conservation on the Keurbooms River Nature Reserve and Robberg Nature Reserve and Marine Protected area. Here are some of the interesting facts he shared. Did you know that both were proclaimed nature reserves in 1980 and that the Marine Protected area was proclaimed in 2000 ? There are 19 documented Archeological Heritage sites on Robberg which is why the whole peninsula is also a National Monument since 1999. Only Nelson Bay Cave is open to the public. Robberg is one of the smallest reserves (174ha) but has an abundance of variety in its geology, archaeology and 267 plant species of which a number are endemic. Fishing is allowed, but no bait collection or spearfishing. Scuba divers have noticed an increase in Reef fish in recent years. Nature Conservation gave no budget for Robberg this year except salaries, but Henk was able to source other funding and the National Dept. of Public Works gave R300 000. The walkways are continuously upgraded for the many hikers . The Fourie and Thesen Huts are no longer there and the indigenous plants are re-establishing themselves . The Fountain shack is looking good, and includes an amazing loo with a view! The debris from the hut at the Point which was destroyed by waves will be removed soon, and an interpretive display will be put up there. The new decks with tables, benches and baboon proof bins are greatly appreciated by

Useful info…things we do not really think of….. Some thoughts from an expert
In light of the tragedy that happened in Norwood in which a young mother and her 2 children tragically died. I used to be on the committee of an organisation called the World Burn Foundation and on the international committee of the International Fire Prevention Organisation - linked with the UN. I found it fascinating listening to lectures on fires and the avoidance thereof. We used to work very closely with the EMS in SA, Aus, US and India. I have done a number of studies on house fires in SA along with EMS and done a number of fire-fighting courses in my time. So here is what we discovered. Almost 55% of all fire deaths as a result of house fires occurs in Developed Urban Areas (your leafy suburbs in traditionally white areas) and 25% of fire deaths occur in developed township areas with only 18% of fire deaths occur in undeveloped urban areas (squatter camps) - although the amount of loss (houses burned down) is much higher. And 2% in rural areas. Why so high in developed urban areas you ask? The number 1 reason is security. Of the fire deaths that we investigated we found that most of the people were trapped by their own security devices - be it a security gate or bars on the windows. Most of the people simply could not get out. The other reason is that people simply didn’t even get the chance to get out of bed. What is the cause of these fires? Surprisingly - almost 65% of the time it was a COMPUTER - many people leave them on at night and the little fan burns out and the computer overheats and ignites. 15% were chargers left in a wall socket or other electronic equipment like a fax machine or the like. The rest by washing

machines, stoves, ovens and arson. What happens in the event of a fire? We conducted many many experiments using technology and different materials traditionally found in homes and this is what we found out. If a fire breaks out in the corner of an average sized bedroom (paper burns at about 400 degrees C) the heat travels up the wall and along the roof and down to the opposite side of the room. Quickly heating it up to the point of what is called 'Flash Over' (this is the temperature at which other things spontaneously ignite.) Like bedding, linen and curtains. This takes about 3 minutes. The room will then fill with thick, poisonous smoke in about 2 minutes as everything ignites. The temperature in the room will be about 400 - 500 degrees C at head height. At 30 cm above the ground the temperature is about 30 - 40 degrees C. Once 'flashover' occurs survival is slim. What should I do if I'm caught in a fire in my home? Don't forget that we lose almost all our senses when we sleep. We lose almost 60% of our hearing and 70% of our ability to smell. So by the time we realise there is a problem - most often it is too late. Usually in a house fire the first thing to go is the electricity - it trips. So there is no light, the room is filling with smoke and disorientation is a reality. Get down on all 4's and crawl to an exit. Do not lie on the floor or leopard crawl - it will take too long. Chances of you getting yourself to a set of keys which will hang at waist level are slim as they usually melt into the wall within about 12 minutes. Find an exit - a window, door or something. Even if you wrap yourself in a duvet and throw yourself through your bedroom window - do it. Your number 1 priority is to get out. Do not try to get photo albums or passports or important papers. Just get out Once out. Never ever ever try to go back in to get a pet or something. Chances of coming back out are slim to NONE. How do I prevent this situation? Number 1 priority is to get yourself at least 4 smoke alarms for your home (Pick n Pay hyper +- R100.) Place 1 in each bedroom and one in the passage they are designed to wake even the soundest sleeper. These things buy you time. Research that we did shows that it can buy you up to 5 minutes more which is the difference between life and
death. Always switch off computers, unplug fax machines and chargers you aren't using. Never put washing in the machine or tumble dryer before bed time. Have an exit plan - rehearse it with children - even make a game of it. Make sure you have a meeting point in your garden somewhere - so you can inform firefighters who or what is missing - so they can perform a search and rescue. Make sure your meeting place is away from the garage as there are usually flammable items in it like gas, paint and thinners that can explode. A fire extinguisher or two scattered around the house (those little ones you can get a Midas for about R100 each) can also buy you time. Ok that's my info - have a nice day all.

It is imperative to go to sea with a proper safety plan and serviceable safety equipment: Anything can happen at sea that could threaten survival. Your crafts batteries could die, your crafts motors could fail, you could hit a semi-submerged object, your boat or paddle craft can be capsized by a wave even in the calmest seas, someone on-board your vessel could get injured or suddenly sustain a serious medical condition, you could find yourself in thick fog and lost or a sudden on-set of increment weather could threaten your safety..... The NSRI appeal to all fishermen and anyone launching any kind of craft to go to sea to: - Carry safety equipment: Wear a properly fitting lifejacket at all times while at sea. Have red distress flares; a signalling mirror or CD disc; communications devices – a handheld radio or cellphone with batteries fully charged and kept in water tight plastic sleeves; a referees whistle; waterproof torch, a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) – Kept in an easily recoverable watertight capsize kit. - Your craft should be painted in a bright colour with reflective stickers pasted on your craft and stencil your name, a contact number of a responsible person on-shore and your own contact number on your craft. - Practice using your safety equipment before launching your craft. The NSRI recommend you jump into a swimming pool fully clothed, with your lifejacket on, to practice recovering safety items from

It will be of little help if the first time you familiarize yourself with your safety equipment is in a real emergency when adrenalin and rough seas are at play. - Always let a responsible person on shore know what time you are leaving, your exact route and intentions and your arrival time. Stick to your plan at all costs. - Anyone going to sea regularly for prolonged periods should sms (communicate) coordinates giving your position to the responsible land party at regular intervals (the NSRI recommend hourly). If you change your plans during your voyage or if you wander off-course during your voyage you should let the responsible person on-shore know. Discuss a plan of action with the responsible shore person so that everyone involved in your planned voyage knows what the procedures will be if you fail to return or if you fail to make a communications connection at the designated times. - The NSRI urge skippers of boats to brief their crew and passengers on safety procedures prior to launching. Cover areas such as capsizing and what everyone should do if the boat capsizes. Flooding and what everyone should do if the boat floods and begins to sink. At regular intervals during the voyage go over emergency safety procedures for your crew and passengers. - Everyone living along the coast, anyone visiting the coast and anyone going to sea should have the sea rescue emergency phone number programmed into their phone (The responsible person on shore should also have the sea rescue emergency phone number programmed into their phone). In a sea rescue emergency contact the sea rescue emergency phone number. Contacting the sea rescue emergency phone number will immediately activate all authorities responsible for a sea rescue emergency without delay and allows the sea rescue authorities the ability to immediately set up a central communications joint operations control centre and launch an effective sea rescue operation. - If you don’t know your nearest sea rescue emergency phone number call the NSRI headquarters during office hours at (021) 4344011 to find out. - If you suspect someone to be in difficulty at sea, or, if you suspect someone to be overdue from fishing, paddling or boating, you should call the sea rescue emergency phone number without delay allowing the sea rescue authorities to investigate immediately. The Observers
Robberg caves & Matjes River Caves ca. 1488, (similar reports from West Coast near St Helena bay. Table Mountain, Pinnacle Point caves). The waters were lapping against the mountains - tsitsi-kamma. It was a clear vibrant vivid day and the bounty was plentiful this day. Cape Buffalo, Zebra and Elephants mingled with Bushbuck and swarms of waterfowl everywhere one looked. A Cape Mountain Lion roared and the roar echoed down the kloofs. A sense of majesty pervaded this place. It was a garden of eden and full of life. It extended to the rare landmark peninsular phenomenon known to some inhabitants then as the Arrow to the Edge of Earth, (later to be termed 'Ponta Delgada' and much later 'Robberg'). The sacred mountain was frequented by the people, for its beauty in observing the sun going to sleep, but also for its bountiful yields of sustenance, for the peoples, gastronomically - and also spiritually. There was an ancient clan Elder, whose sun-withered and time-parched skin sagged with wisdom and experience, and whose speckled piercing kind eyes told many stories without words. He was called "The Oyster-catcher" for his love of oysters and deftness at finding them. mimicking the wise bird of that name. Like the Honeyguide helped the people find honey in the Oute-niqua or Honey Mountains, so the oystercatcher led the people to particularly rewarding beds of shell-fish, and they were always rewarded for their assistance with some of the 'harvest' to take to their young nestlings. brain and its capacity, its potential. The staple food of the strand-loper or beach-comber. The alikreukel, limpets, perlemoen, clams, pencilshell, rocketshell, mussels and oysters and even sea urchins; delicacies so tasty and nutritious, but that inadvertently also served as the fuel that fed the wondrous human journey. The only shellfish not consumed there was what we call the Pansy Shell, revered as sacred for its star like shape, and used as decoration and symbol of prosperity - which in those days reflected one's immersion in nature; the more one respected the natural world, the more it respected you and your people. So wealth was measured by your knowledge and respect for the Earth; for their was the greatest and best prosperity. The elder known affectionately as
Oyster-catcher decided to sit back and rest in the shade of the cave near the midden he and his forebears had used for generations, as the building pile of calcified discarded shells showed. He carefully placed his fishing spear nearby in its customary place; for it was an heirloom that was renowned in the clan. He scanned the familiar vista before him. There on the shore was the familiar colour -spectrum of the beauty of nature: a myriad of water fowl, ungulates, antelope and other creatures in all shapes and sizes.
