Thank you for awarding me a Yeoman's Award in last week's issue of What's New. I received enquiries from three people who asked to go on to our mailing list. I would really like to explain to the public what we try to do through this mailing list. The main idea is to try and find homes for animals that have either got lost, been abandoned, or have been rescued from a life of horror. In the case of the lost animals we try first to find their owners. Every time I send round an e mail I do so knowing that the majority of people on this list cannot home another animal. Much as this would be wonderful it is simply not practical. However, it is through all these contacts that we get enquiries from outside the list, from people who can help by offering a home to an animal or telling us about a friend who lost a cat or dog recently and helping us to find the owners of these WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 8 JULY 2010

But, and this is a large but, I DO NEED MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN OUR MAILING LIST and act as a chain of humans who can spread the word around to their friends and neighbours about either missing, found or homeless animals. PLEASE. Those of you who have computers and e mail addresses, and there are lots of you, will you not consider putting yourselves on our list and spreading the word. After all, if it were your dog or cat that went missing you would be distraught. Just think of those others who are going through that now and see what you can do to help. At this present time I have two cats to home, otherwise the sad end will be euthanasia, two missing cats I am trying to find for their distraught owners, and a lovely little

GREEN & CLEAN… At the last Mayoral Committee meeting Waste 2 Power made an intriguing and positive presentation dealing with the disposal of sewerage and waste. In simple terms the process is as follows: The waste collected from homes is brought to a plant constructed by Waste 2 power ( at no cost to the Municipality) once dumped it is taken by a conveyer system into an autoclave which runs at a temperature of 160 degrees. The drum rotation method separates the different wastes. After this process the totally sterilized waste is sorted and all recyclable materials are processed and packaged according to regulated requirements. A sewerage plant will also be built on the existing site ( no cost to the Municipality) The sewerage will be processed and the odorless "cakes" transported to the waste plant. Our present plant generates approximately 45% grey water with a green dot rating, the grey water processed by the Waste 2 Power will definitely be of a superior quality. Once the cycle in the sewerage plant is completed 16% of original mass is in the form of dry odorless cakes which are transported to the waste plant and recycled into electricity. This form of waste management is the ultimate solution … no more landfills, no more polluting of streams and rivers and no more carbon emissions. The only request is the leasing of land, most likely on the Hillview farm, at a nominal yearly rental. The advantages of establishing the above plants are considerable with ZERO POLLUTION! Primary School News The second term of 2010 was very hectic, busy and very short, but we managed to complete our tasks. We were visited by directors, team manager, IMG’s and subject advisors and psychologists. The department officials want better results of literacy and numeracy only. They promote quality teaching and learning. They are working very closely with us to ensure that that we uphold the non-negotiable in education, as identified by President Jacob Zuma, that teachers must teach and be in class, on time and teaching, that parent must support their children and their teachers and that department officials must support must support teachers and schools. The department will monitor, evanate and focus seriously on curriculum, specially literacy and numeracy from grade R to 7. Our national results are still not good. We must pull our socks. The best strategies to improve our results are the following [Action Plan] Teaches must teach. Learners must learn. Parents must support their children in homeworks, projects and assessments. Teachers and learners must attend the school. Department of education must support us. Educators and learners must be punctual and in class on time. The school must hold extra-classes. Grades must have action plan to improve the national results. The school must have debate society and encourage public speaker learners. Art and culture is part of promoting literacy. To analyse the internal, provincial and national results of literacy and numeracy in all grades. The results, assessment tasks
and assessment plans must be known by parents. Learners must get textbooks as soon as possible. The school must drive a teaching and learning campaign. The school is also committed to provide the highest quality education. We achieved the following items. Educators and learners attended the school until the last day of the school. Teaching and learning is improving slightly in provincial level. Internal results is 94%-[from grade R-7]. The school is safe and secured. Bambanani is playing important role at school. We have extra-classes activities such as maths in grade 6. Plett friends help us in literacy in grade 4. Bible friends assist us in life orientation in grade 7. We participated on music competition. We have a concert for fundraising. SGB has legal advisor. Soccer is still in national level and received trophy and certificate of national level. Bitou Municipality paved the car parking and the entrance. We fenced the sports field and vegetable garden. Phakamisani Primary is a member of Bitou 10 Foundation. SGB is pro-active and willing to develop the school to the highest level. We need commitment from teachers, learners and parents to improve quality education. To embark strongly 9 teachers and learners campaign. A good school has excellent results or doing well in standard tests. Yet true quality is much more than exam results. A school can do its own self education. The quality school abide by certain principles and process. They strive to ad here to values such as honesty, kindness, respect and 9 strong work ethnic. Decision taken are ethically based. There’s no place for corruption, favouritism, nepotism, racism and job for pals. What makes quality? It starts at the top. The principal and a senior management team need to “buy in” to the principles of quality. They initiative the discussion of making the school a place of educational excellence. Grant Ross (Age 24, South African) and Sebastian Davies (Age 24, South African) are taking on an overland unassisted cycle expedition from John O'Groats (Scotland) to Cape Town (South Africa), they started on the 8th July 2009. The Distance of the the cycle is roughly 24 000 km over 2 continents and 18 countries, and this challenge is expected to take in excess of 15 months. As part of the challenge they are supporting the development charity ActionAid. Money is being raised for two specific projects being run in Malawi and Western Uganda. The challenge is to provide safe water for the Kitemba primary school children in Western Uganda. The second project is to provide a daily meal and fresh kitchen garden produce to reduce hunger and help children concentrate in class, for the children in the Nsanje region of Malawi. They hope is to raise £20 000. Finally their end goal is to change the consciousness of people following their route by teaching people that there is more in this life than money matters and materialism, while bringing the world closer through the gracious human act of giving. They started at the northern most point of the Scottish mainland in the town of John O'Groats, cycling the length of the United Kingdom, into France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece. They then crossed the Mediterranean with a flight from Athens to Cairo into Africa.
From there the route then goes through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa where they finally end in Cape Town after visiting the southern most point of Africa, Cape Agalhas . Grant and Sebastian will be arriving on Thursday 8th July around lunch time. So look out for two fit, strong individuals riding bikes with their saddlebags strapped to the sides.
