Its the Season to be jolly... Tra la la la.. It is so wonderful to see families relaxing and enjoying each other. The weather has been good and we do need a couple of cooler days to cool off the roasted bodies and set in the great tans. Please take care. The sun can be fierce. This is the festive week, with Christmas and Family Day (and an extra day thrown in for good measure...) Hanukkah which starts on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev, this year began in the evening of Tuesday, 20 December 2011, and ends in the evening of Wednesday, 28 December 2011. Our mayor announced that Plett will enjoy the traditional new year’s fireworks display from Central beach. Hooray! May you all enjoy a wonderful time over the festive season, be it solo and introspective or merry with lots of folk surrounding you. May the spirit of peace prevail. The Landmark Foundation will also be at Ingwe on this day and Director Dr Bool Smuts will be talking about the findings of their project which has been tracking leopards and working with farmers towards non-lethal predator management since 2004. It is now one of the largest studies on leopard in the world operating between Hermanus and Port Elizabeth and inland to Graaf Reinet. Survey cameras have been up in the Garden Route and 2 leopards GPS collared in the forests.

Sea Rescue National Alert. WaterWise:

Sea Rescue’s Educational arm, WaterWise, urges holiday makers to be extra cautious over the festive season. A spring tide falls on the Christmas weekend this year. The tides will be extreme and the currents stronger than usual because of the spring tide. As people will be flocking to the beach WaterWise urges beach goers to be very careful and keep a close watch on their children. Before setting off to the beach, river or dam, make sure that you have a plan if things go wrong. This plan would include a spot to meet at if a member of the party is separated from the group and making sure that everybody in the group knows the telephone number for the Ambulance - 10177 which can be dialed from a landline or cell phone. The Sea Rescue number for the area that you will be visiting can be found under the heading “EMERGENCY NUMBERS” on the Sea Rescue website : www.searescue.org.za

Wet clothes get heavy and will pull you down. Pack sunscreen, a hat, food and water for your trip to the beach. If you spend too much time in the sun you might get dehydrated and tired. It is very dangerous to swim when you are not feeling well.  Make sure you have memorized the  emergency number: You can call 10177 from any phone. - Plan to go to a beach where lifeguards are on duty. Remember to swim between their flags. Their flags are red and yellow. If lifeguards are not on duty do not swim. - If the rocks are wet it means that waves can reach these rocks. If you are on these rocks the waves will also be able to reach you and might sweep you off. - Look out for big waves. They are powerful and can tumble you upside down. - Look at the tide. Is it low tide or high tide? If you have walked on the sand to go to a small rocky island when it is low tide you might get trapped once the tide comes in and then the water will be too deep for you to walk back. - Children should always ask a responsible adult to go with them to the beach and watch them while they swim. - Never swim alone. - Never turn your back to the sea. - Never swim when you are too tired, too upset or too cold. - Never swim straight after you have eaten. Wait at least 40 minutes. - Never force a friend to swim if they don’t want to swim. - Never follow a ball, floating mattress or an inflatable tube when it gets swept out to sea by the wind. You might lose focus on the depth of the water and before you know it, it might be too deep for you to stand and you will also get swept out to sea. Be aware of rip currents. A rip current looks like a river of water flowing out to sea. You can easily spot the rip current - it is the place in the line of waves were there is no wave breaking, and if you throw a stick into the water it will be pulled out to sea. End of an Era!

It’s that time of the year again! Soon we will be celebrating the end of 2011 and welcoming in the New Year. Of course, we can only do this in style and what better way than to watch the spectacular fireworks display that will be held on Central Beach. However, please spare a thought for the animals in our town. It must be remembered that dogs and cats hear things 7 times more intensely than humans and all animals generally have very much more acute hearing than we do. This results in severe trauma to the animals in our midst, so what we view as a pleasurable and exciting spectacle, with wonderful big bangs and superb sprays of lights, etc., is experienced by most animals as being something horrific and enormously loud – very, very frightening and something from which to try and escape! This can result in severe injuries and quite often in the death of the animal. For those of you who will be out of your homes on that evening, please make sure that your pets are secured in a safe room in your house, close the curtains and windows and play music, thereby reducing the traumatic effect of the sudden lights and loud bangs. Rescue remedy for animals is available at all the vets and the health shop in town and can be given to your pets on the day to help keep them calm. The Bitou Municipality has issued a reminder to all residents and visitors urging them to please adhere to the prohibition of fire works/sky lanterns being set off in the area in the interest of public safety, as in various Acts that govern public safety and fire prevention*. We are adding to

this list the welfare of our animal population, which is also covered by law. It is really important to us that everyone enjoys themselves at this festive time, but please be aware that the letting off of fireworks other than those at the display on Central Beach is against the law and will be dealt with accordingly. * Municipal Notice 261/2011 refers. Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course

Lunchbox Theatre invites all Bitou residents who have an interest in theatre to apply to be part of the Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course being held in New Horizons on the 28th and 29th January 2012. The course will cover the theory behind writing a good script and show you how to turn that script into a stage play. The course has been designed to be a fun and interactive learning experience and includes plenty of practical experience over the two days. This Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport initiative will prepare our local Bitou theatre practitioners to create works that will be entered into the Eden Drama Festival in 2012. This Festival opens doors for our local theatre groups to present their works on a national platform. The Lunchbox Theatre Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course will run from 09h00 – 17h00 at the New Horizons Community Centre on Sat 28th and Sun th 29 January 2012. That if you recycle it is not only good for the environment but also good for your pocket book. Right now the Bitou land fill site is overfull and can no longer accommodate our ever increasing amount of trash. Our trash will have to be transported to Knysna and then to Mossel Bay, at our cost! What can you do? It is very easy! Just collect recycle bags that are available at the municipality, separate your trash into recyclables and non recyclables. Find out what

is collected on which days in your area and set out your trash as normal for their collection days. There is no great effort on your behalf but will definitely save on your pocket book. You may be wondering what are recyclables: here is a short list – glass and plastic bottles, any plastic containers or packaging, plastic bags, drink and food tins, all paper products (please collapse your cardboard boxes). By making a compost heap of all your old vegetable/fruit peelings and leaf litter, you can save yourself the smelly fertilizer and have a natural fertilizer for your garden!

Capuchin Twins born at Monkeyland

Last week a very rare occasion occurred at Monkeyland with the birth of twin capuchins. Generally capuchins have a single baby.See a pic of the precious new babies on our website - www.helloplett.co.za We thought you’d enjoy a little more information on these special primates, so have taken excerpts from what Lara has written about them on their comprehensive website www.monkeyland.co.za In Capuchin societies the females do the courting. They approach the males when they are ready to mate. They’ll do anything to look their finest and act as casual and indifferent as they possibly could so that the capuchin they like will hopefully like them back and with a bit of luck not note how eager they actually are. Usually the female Capuchins woo their love-interest with their eyebrows highly raised. They call / invite the males over with suggestive gestures and bird-like sounds. Yet, for the females this is often a very difficult task because male Capuchin monkeys love to play hard to get. Courtships may last anything from a few

At Monkeyland imaginable romance and drama story is scripted right here in the forest. Female Capuchin Monkeys are pregnant for about 5 months. After about 10 weeks the mother will allow the baby to be carried by ‘friends’. Most babysitter’s are female but they do allow the men to carry their young if the mother’s feel that the male babysitter is careful (or if he is a trusted relative). After the 2nd month the baby Capuchins start to eat a little bit of solid food. The baby may venture off mommy’s back at times, but the mother will stay close to the baby (carry & nurse it etc) for at least 11 months. Here are some facts about Capuchins. Capuchins are among the most intelligent of the New World Monkeys They have been observed using tools as the chimpanzees

do, they would for example find a stone so that they can crack open a nut or find a thin stick so they can push bugs (insects & other grubs) out of the holes they’re hiding in. When a baby Capuchin falls and hurts it’s arm or something & it bleeds the mother will even for example take a mixture of mud and leaves and put it on the wound to help it heal. Why are these primates called Capuchins? Because of their hair (crowns). Their hair apparently resembles the cap (hat) or capuche, of Franciscan Monks. In the wild Capuchins live in South American forests. Capuchin Monkeys like to move about in large groups. For Capuchins, Squirrel Monkeys and other primate species that are often attacked by large birds of prey the rule is: the larger the group is the more protection they can give to each other - 6 pairs of eyes are better than one. At Monkeyland previously caged primates enjoy the freedom of a forest experience and have their young as they should. A visit there is always a very special occasion.

Twee Bybelversies wat vir ons drie besonder kosbaar was, was die volgende: Galasiers 2:20 “Ek is met Christus gekruisig en ek leef nie meer nie, maar Christus leef in my; en wat ek nou in die vlees lewe leef ek deur die geloof in die Seun van God wat my liefgehad het en Homself vir my oorgegee het.” Asook Kol.1:25b - 27 "...om die woord van God te vervul, naamlik die verborgenheid wat van die eeue en geslagte af verborge was, maar nou geopenbaar is aan Sy heiliges, aan wie God wou bekend maak wat die rykdom van die heerlikheid van hierdie verborgenheid onder die heidene is, dit is Christus in julle , die hoop van die heerlikheid." Renier het hierdie geopenbaarde verborgenheid verstaan, dit aangegryp, geglo en uitgeleef. Vir hom was God se genade ‘n werklikheid en het hy besef dat werke geen mens in die hemel kan bring nie. Dat al ons eie pogings nutteloos is en niks beteken nie. Dat slegs Christus ‘n mens kan red deur dat Hy die volle prys vir ons sondes betaal en ons straf gedra het.

En nie net dit nie – want dan is dit slegs ‘n halwe evangelie – maar dat God vir hulle wat dit glo en ontvang ook Christus se geregtigheid toe reken, sodat ons heilig voor Hom kan staan. Paulus se woorde in 2 Korintiers 5:21 was in Renier se lewe ‘n sprekende getuienis. Die versie lees: “Want Hy [God die Vader] het Hom [Jesus Christus] wat geen sonde geken het nie, sonde vir ons gemaak, sodat ons kan word geregtigheid van God in Hom.” Dit is dus geen wonder dat my vriend Renier kon sê: “Want vir my is die lewe Christus en die sterwe wins.” Mag dit vandag ook u getuienis wees. Arthur is the newest member of the Tenikwa Furry Family. He is about 11/2 months old. He is still suckling from his mom, Amber, and dad Merlin is very proud of his little son. The African Wild Cats have recently been moved to a larger enclosure where Sinjin, Ginja and their son, Totsi used to live. Seal Pup rescued

Offshore Adventures was on their daily program at Robberg Peninsula, swimming with the seals. The sea was very rough and when they turned back, they came across a seal pup that had been knocked off the rocks and was just swimming in circles. They tried very hard to get him back, but he would just get knocked off again. He was taken to Tenikwa until the sea calmed down. The next morning Offshore Adventures took him back, giving Tenikwa wonderful feedback… When they went to the spot where they found him his mother was already there.
