Wow! What a week! Many fabulous activities enjoyed during the Easter Games despite the wonderful rain, lovely family time, renewed gratitude for blessings after experiencing Pesach and Easter. The Ryley’s concert was a magnificent treat! Our super duper new Central Library which is going to open soon in New Horizons was officially launched by the Minister of Cultural Affairs & Sports, Dr Ivan Meyer. He also presented the Municipality with a nice cheque for library services in our area at the same occasion. Still quite a number of super things you should not miss - the Exhibitions in Myfanwe’s Studio in Main Street, the Whitehouse exhibition, The Arts Association Exhibition in Mellville’s Centre. They all have some super talent to appreciate. If you are going a little further afield, pop in and see the Vanishing Villages 11, The Memory of Culture Exhibition by Stanley Grootboom at the Old Gaol in Knysna. There is always something interesting to do and enjoy in our area. if you are beached out, forested out, fynbos weary and seek company, most clubs welcome visitors. No excuses... enjoy Plettime !!

Weather changes course for the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge doubles event The doubles event of the 2012 Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge, supported by PPC Cement, got off to an uncertain start on Sunday morning (8 April), with severe weather predicted in Plettenberg Bay on the day. “The wind changed direction twice leading up to the early start, forcing us to reconsider the route plan,” said race organizer Wayne Craig. The revised course, now slightly shorter at 14km took paddlers from Plett’s central beach, across the bay to the Robberg peninsula, before heading to the Robberg point and finally back to the Central beach finish line. The double ski's tore off into a fair sized swell with a biting wind behind them for the first leg of the race. Key to the day's challenge was a paddle intoRobberg beach at The Wreck, where a team member ran around a beach marker and back to their ski to launch againinto the pounding surf. From here to the Robberg point, a grueling 3km of heavy swell and strong surge off the nearby rocks kept paddlers working hard to reach the end of the peninsula. “The swell at the point was pretty big and with the wind fighting us on the return trip, the paddling got quite tough, “ commented Plett’s Alexis

Lyon. It was the team of Sean Rice and Simon van Gyssen, who despite the headwind, powered their way to the finish line in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes, followed by Steve Woods and Luke Nesbit in second position with Dawid Mocke and Mathew Gru in third. “There was a tight pack leading for the first leg, but we hit a huge set on our first landing at The Wreck, resulting in Simon and I luckily managing to gain some distance,” said Rice. Despite the challenging weather conditions on the second day, both the singles and doubles Surski events for 2012 were a great success and continued to draw a good crowd of spectators, especially for Saturday’s singles race. With PPC Cement’s generous contribution and further support from Penny Pinchers Plett, Off The Hook Seafood Café, Hansa and Vitamin Water, this surfski event remains one to be marked on the paddling calendar for many years to come. Repairs + Servicing to All Makes of Vehicles. Competetive Prices We will collect and deliver. 044 533 2540 Letter via the Editor I read Bruce Richardson’s article about Car Guards in the last What’s New . I support the formal guards as they do also help with the sometimes shambolic traffic activity in Main Street. However I would like to request that part of their training be focused on ensuring that all vehicles parked in Main Street go fully into the parking places so as not to leave the back of the car/bus/bakkie sticking out into the road – it is only a matter of time before the back of a vehicle is smashed. There are also a few trees that have stupidly been planted right in the middle of a parking place and these aggravate the situation – those few trees should be removed or moved to the the lines separating the parking places. NEWS FROM PAWS If you missed the note regarding the Street Collection in the last issue, we are happy to report that the sum of R7330.45 was collected. This will certainly help with our day-to-day expenses and a big thank you must again be said to all of you who contributed so generously and also to those of you who braved the weather and stood for at least an hour shaking your tins. The response to our article regarding the two dogs abandoned by their thoughtless owners was heartening. To bring you up to date, the maltese is doing very well, although it took a while for her to settle down in her new home and become less stressed. She is now fine. Our thanks must go to the two police officers who stopped the traffic so as to catch this little dog and then drove around trying to find her owner! The other dog is being looked after by a PAWS member and is beginning to settle down as well. There were a number of people involved in catching and looking after this dog and our thanks go to Frank, Willemijn, and Owen, all of whom played a big part in preventing this dog’s death on the N2. We also greatly appreciate the part played by the public in reporting lost/ stray animals and those that are at risk, whatever that may be. www.helloplett.co.za

managing the governing body elections at Plett Primary – and there Phil was, chairing the meeting. We frequently look afield for heroes, for men and women who perform extra-ordinarily under strenuous, demanding circumstances. Yet often the greatest walk amongst us. Phil has served both Wittedrift High and Plett Primary in the most exemplary manner, the epitomy of one whose total commitment is to the wellness of his community. He has been a governing body member of either one of the two schools for the past 16 years without a break in service – for 6 years he served as our (Wittedrift High) financial chairperson. He guided our financial management processes with integrity, expertise and a good dose of common sense. Our strong financial situation today is still hugely due to the foundations laid by Phil. During our disciplinary hearings he played a vital role. His no nonsense yet compassionate and unassuming attitude brought us through many difficult moments. Our children were blessed to have been exposed to his wisdom, his insights and his unbending principles – they were able to share in his true concern to maintain what is good and right. In spite of his heavy administrative

load, both in management and governance, Phil’s presence at every rugby and hockey match, at every athletics meeting and parents’ gathering was a given. His presence Saturday mornings at, the underwater hockey provided an edge to the boys’ and girls’ sense of competition – also at the touch rugby every Friday afternoon on Central Beach. Phil has been, and is, an inspiration to me, to us as a father, a husband, a sportsman, a community leader – as they say, a man for all season. Your decision to stand down is both understandable and well-deserved, Phil. Just know that we honour you for what you have meant to our schools, our children and our community. You are and have been the epitomy of a true here- your input in the lives of so many youngsters will still be manifested for many, many years to come. This yeoman’s award also goes the Heather and your three sons who have shared you so willingly with us! Know that we cherish your family. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 12 APRIL 2012

A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK. Philippians 1:21 [ERV] "To me, the only important thing about living is Christ. And even death would be for my benefit." Years ago, in the early 1970's, a then well-know singer by the name of Conway Twitty [born Harold Lloyd Jenkins] hit the top of the "hit parade" with a song called "What am I living for?" The words of the first few lines went like this: "Well, What am I living for, if not for you; What am I living for, if not for you; What am I living for, if not for you; Baby, nobody else, nobody else will do." My question today is simply this: "What are you living for?" If I were to ask this question of a number of people this day I would in all probability get as many different answers as the number of respondents. Most married persons would probably say: "I am living for my spouse and my family"; singles would perhaps answer: "I am living for myself to prepare for a good future", etc. Obviously these answers are not wrong in them self and every person ought to be pursuing these goals in life, but..... Yes, there is a "but" we need to consider and take serious note of. The Bible, God's inerrant and final revelation to mankind puts it clearly that all of us have only a limited time here on earth and that one day we will have to give an account to the Creator for the things we have done in this life. Let me remind you of two important Scriptures: The writer to the Hebrews reminds us of our impending death and says: "Everyone must die once. Then they are judged." [Heb.9:27] The apostle Paul adds: "We must all stand before Christ to be judged. Everyone will get what they should. They will be paid for whatever they did--good or bad--when they lived in this earthly body." [2Cor.5:10] There you have it - those are the facts. However, there's more. Not one single human being can, according the the Bible, measure up to God's standards and will be able to stand before the Lord in that day and hope to be declared righteous and fit for heaven based upon whatever good works that person may have done. That, my dear reader is the bad news.

R270.00 per person from 12.00hrs - 14.00hrs Contact us now on 044-5339067 to make your booking!! But, (Remember the "but" I mentioned before?) there is also extremely good news. This is the good news of the true gospel that tells us that every one - you and I included - can stand before a Holy God one day without any fear that we will be condemned and turned away, provided we have put our trust in Christ. He, the Word of God states, can [and wants to be ] our advocate. Listen to these wonderfully comforting words found in 1John 2:1-2 "My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He is the propitiation concerning our sins, and not concerning ours only, but also concerning the sins of all the world." [MKJV] It is for Him and these truths that we should be living for whilst we are still here on this earth. The truth that Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved and to be reconciled with the Father; that He has paid the full penalty for our sins and that we cannot add anything to His redemptive work; that Christ has not only guaranteed those who have placed their trust in Him that He will save them, but that He will also live His life in and through them and keep them saved. This is the promise: "For I am certain of this very thing, that He, by whom the good work was started in you, will make it complete till the day of Jesus Christ!" [Phil.1:6] So,what are you living for? Henk.

Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge Off to a good start with the 2012 singles event The 2012 surfski singles event of The Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge, supported by PPC Cement, got off to a fantastic start with near perfect sea conditions in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday morning (7 April). A jovial crowd of spectators gathered on Plett’s Central beach, while in true event tradition, The Plettenberg Bay Field Band led nearly 50 participants to their surfskis, lined up at the waters edge. With most participants taking on the more challenging 5 lap, 20km course, a 3 lap, 11km challenge was also strongly supported. The course proved as grueling as ever and retained its status ofbeing dubbed the best lap course in the world, by Jasper Mocke, a past winner of this event. Surfski’s tore off from the start, with paddlers digging in hard to gain position. But once round the infamous blind rocks, off Beacon Island, the field spread out, with a pack of 5 paddlers keeping a steady lead pace. The Keurbooms river mouth proved to be the events’ biggest challenge, with low tides, sand banks and a fair sized break, literally keeping participants on the edge of their seats. Without doubt it was this section of the course, which lead to some interesting position changesduring the event.

Telephone: 044 534 8082 Email: reservations@kurland.co.za Ultimately it was Dawid Mocke who snatched first place ahead of his younger brother and 2011 winner, Jasper Mocke. “The low tide made sandbanks in the river mouth the biggest challenge on the first two laps, but we could eventually paddle over these as the tide came in,” said Dawid Mocke after the race. Second position went to Jasper Mocke, while Richard von Wilderman crossed the line in third place. Kirsten Flanagan took first place in the female entries, followed by Jenna Ward in second and Nicky Russell in third place. “ With a combination of both long and short courses, this race continues to challenge a wide range of paddling abilities,” said event organiser Wayne Craig. With PPC Cement’s generous contribution and further support from

Penny Pinchers Plett, Off The Hook Seafood Café, Hansa and Vitamin Water, this surfski event remains one to be marked on the paddling calendar for many years to come. There are beautiful blue waterlilies at the River Cafe in Piesang Valley, at Wild Waters Park - we were fascinated when one of our guests told us that they were one of only two water lilies indigenous to South Africa, so we did some googling and share the followig interesting facts

The Water lily Family

The water lily family, Nymphaeaceae, is an old and evolutionarily primitive one, and is grouped with buttercups (Ranunculus) and magnolias in the order Ranales. Furthermore, fossil evidence suggests that nymphaeas have not changed much over the past 160 million years. All they have done is move about the globe, keeping in the tropical and temperate zones.

There are only two species that occur in southern Africa. One is Nymphaea lotus, the white water lily, or white lotus which has night-blooming white or cream flowers and is widespread in tropical Africa to southern Africa, where it occurs in the former Transvaal, KwaZuluNatal, Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia, and in Madagascar, in sheltered water 0.52.5m deep and in swamps. It also occurs in hot springs in Hungary and Romania. There is a variety in Australia and it is widely cultivated in the USA and South America The other southern African species is Nymphaea nouchali. The blue lotus, Nymphaea caerulea and the Cape blue water lily, Nymphaea capensis . The meaning of the specific ephithet nouchali has only been traced with the assistance of staff at Kew who report that one of their specimens contains a note that Noakhali is a district in Bangladesh. The variety name caerulea refers to the sky blue colour of the flowers.

Water lilies, particularly nymphaeas, the true water lilies, are steeped in history and tradition. The name of the genus Nymphaea is a direct transliteration of a Greek word which Theophrastus (a disciple of Plato and Aristotle) used to describe these plants about 300 years before the common era, and refers to the practice of early Greeks in dedicating the water lily to the semi-divine water maidens, the nymphs. This is however by no means the earliest record that we have of the water lily. In Egypt, Nymphaea caerulea (now sunk in Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea), the blue lotus and Nymphaea lotus, the white lotus, have been admired, painted, eaten, grown and revered for thousands of years. The goddess Isis is said to have pointed out that the rhizomes were edible, and its flowers, buds and leaves are often depicted on ancient monuments, in murals, on pottery and on furniture. Monarchs and priests of ancient Egypt were laid to rest with wreaths made from the petals of the blue lotus, laid in concentric semi-circles from the chin downwards. There is also evidence, in the form of a painting in a tomb dating back to 3000-2500 BCE, that nymphaeas were deliberately cultivated in square, evenly spaced beds fed by canals. The blooms were in great demand for religious festivals, offerings of the flowers being made to the dead or to the gods, as well as for gifts to visiting noblemen as a gesture of friendship and goodwill. And later on, both Amenhotep IV and Ramses III (1225 BCE) are known to have had them growing purely for their ornamental value in their palace gardens. The reason for their veneration lies in the belief that the beautiful blooms of the water lily, rising pure and clean from the slimy mud, were comparable with the aspirations of mankind: purity and immortality. In China water lilies are thought to have been grown for many years. There is a beautiful passage by Chou Tun-I of the eleventh century T'ang Dynasty: " . . my favourite is the water lily. How stainless it rises form its slimy bed. How modestly it reposes on the clear pool, an emblem of

purity and truth. Symmetrically perfect, its subtle perfume is wafted far and wide; while there it rests in spotless state, something to be regarded reverently from a distance, and not to be profaned by familiar approach.". It has also long been cultivated by the Japanese. In modern times, the name lotus is used almost exclusively for Nelumbo nucifera, also called the sacred lotus or incorrectly the Egyptian lotus. Nelumbo nucifera is not a native of Egypt. It actually comes from south-east Asia where it is often found near temples and is regarded as sacred in China and Japan. It was introduced to the Nile by the Romans, probably for food. The true Egyptian lotus is Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (syn. N. caerulea) and Nymphaea lotus. Back home, in earlier times (c. 1800) in South Africa, the rootstock of the blue water lily was collected and eaten, either raw or in curries, in particular by the Cape Malays and farming communities in the Cape. Today, only waterblommetjies, Aponogeton distachyos, are still eaten. The common name kaaimanblom, which means merman's flower in English, was acquired because this water lily is often found growing in a deep pool (kaaimansgat), and popular superstition had it that a merman (kaaiman) dwelt in such a pool and would drown anyone swimming in his pool. Furthermore, it was suspected that the merman put the flowers there specifically to attract his victims, especially disobedient boys. It gets the name frog's pulpit / paddapreekstoel, because the leaves provide resting places for frogs. So next time you enjoy a meal at the River Cafe ... and you certainly should... George and Vavva make very lekka food... you can look at these special flowers in a different light, ( and the wise owl may occasionally look accross benevolently with one eye open to add to the ambience) First ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY

Toys for Africa are undertaking a charity drive to the Western and Eastern Cape from 20 - 27 May. We will be making 31 stops in Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, De Rust, George, Thembalethu, Wilderness, Rondevlei, Rheenendal, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Coldstream, Stormsriver, Humansdorp, Jeffrey’s Bay and Port Elizabeth. Currently we will be meeting just under 16 000 children. The week will consist of handing out toys, helping and assisting with maintenance work at the chosen beneficiaries, erecting shade netting, expanding vegetable gardens, performances by Esti and Marcel Caroto and loads of fun for the children. After the success of the 2011 drive to Mpumalanga and Limpopo this year’s drive promises to be even bigger, even louder and an even greater success. Although this week is a great initiative we need to get corporate companies like yourself to get involved and assist us in making this week a success. We will get media attention through local newspapers and the radio station Eden FM will be our media partner and thus we will be able to offer great publicity for assistance in reaching our goals for the week. We will also add logo’s of sponsors and donors to our charity drive logo and add updates and logo’s on our facebook and twitter pages. If it is possible to attend one of the handouts, we would also like to invite you to bring banners that we could display at the handouts. What makes this drive very unique is that each of the 31 beneficiaries were able to choose toys for their children from a catalogue with 21 toy options. We have a strict 1 toy per child policy, but other than that we are looking forward to inspire the children we meet. Should you be interested in becoming a sponsor, please have a look at the beneficiaries for the 7 days and what is needed for them. If you are interested and able to supply a full sponsorship of one of the beneficiaries, it would be highly appreciated. If however you would like to make a fixed amount donation, please feel free to do so. For our 2011 drive we raised the last R13 000.00 in R 50.00’s and R100.00’s. The date the drive will be visiting Plett is: 23 May: Sterreweg Nursery School in Pletten-

Well I wanna take this opportunity to thank all our fans, our beloved supporters and mostly our enemies, they always bring the best in us. Let me start with game against Milano F.C. On Saturday, we lost and we had a lot of chances that we should’ve buried away but again it was not our day. This week we are playing Steenberg United that is coached by Thabo Mngomeni and it’s a must win game for us. Kick off is at 15h00 on the 14th April. Come and keep the spirit high as we are climbing up the ladder. Coming to this past weekend Easter tournament, eerr I wont dwell much on it but I will only highlight the positive. It was good to see the development in Plett is growing and I wanna thank all the coaches that put their trust in young players in this community. I urge again all those that are financially strong to please help the development teams. Whatever happened during this tournament, football was the winner at the end of the day. We came victorious with our young team and again we returned our trophy. Thanks to the coach that was in charge of the tournament Mr. Luzuko Koboka, who won the coach of the tournament, well done. In accordance with his wishes, a brief farewell service is planned for Fri 13th April at 2h30 on Robberg 5 Beach. All friends and loyal customers are welcome to attend. Donations in lieu of flowers will be given to Cansa Plett. The family of Steen Andersen is grateful for the comforting support that Cansa Plett provided. Bless you Pat Henderson, you gave us the strength to provide loving home-based care for Steen in his final hours. Steen Andersen is now at peace. The family is sincerely thankful for the devotion of Jayn Hawkins, the professional support of Brian Heyns and the loyalty of his staff. Steen was comforted by the many messages received from customers, neighbours and local businesses. Customers and creditors are sincerely asked to contact Brian Heyns directly for all business related matters. Steen Andersen passed away peacefully in the arms of his daughter Lisa. Dr Nel together with Alan McCaw and Douglas van der Merwe of Molo Motors provided spiritual guidance and loving support. Lisa and family will be eternally grateful for the blessings that were bestowed upon us. Farewell to Steen Andersen, my good mate for over 30 years. He was invited into our home in Plett some 12 years ago and built a business from absolutely nothing. R.I.P. my friend. Love Jon CX Appliance Du vil blive savnet. Huil I fred. Jeg elsker dig. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 12 APRIL 2012

JAMES FABER

Registered Electrician all types of electrical work

Public Statement from the Crags Residents Association We, the members of the CRA, condemn the vicious attack on one of our Senior Residents who was assaulted, stabbed and callously left to die in the grounds of her property. This unprovoked violence against a defenceless person must not be allowed to go unchallenged. In addition to this heinous act of aggression, our community has been subjected to an escalation of robberies on private properties: at least four have taken place over the last weekend. These criminal acts cannot be condoned. No amount of poverty can be used as an excuse to assault anybody or to invade the sanctity of any home. We call upon the SAPS to do their work of protecting the residents of the Crags against this scourge and ask them ensure our safety and security. The CRA also appeals to all our residents to immediately activate

Mangold Point Cuts, Highlights & Colours Michelle & Cathy: Tel No 044 533 6986 Cell: 071 297 2541 Neighbourhood Support Groups, draw up protection plans for their immediate areas and conduct patrols at night to minimise unlawful acts and the invasion of property. We would emphasise the following: 1. Do not pick up casual labour from the roadside or other pick up points for work on your property but contact Callum Koopman at the Kurland Civic Centre who has a list of approved and registered labour. 2.Note suspicious vehicles or people in your area and warn your neighbours. 3.Criminals rely on your apathy for their success

Kranshoek Kleuterskool On Monday 9th April 2012 KAC hosted the Certificate Ceremony of Kranshoek Kleuterskool. This ceremony was attended by DA Councilor Annelise Olivier, Mr.& Mrs.Brown, John Koopman and his team, Annie Du Plessis, Shirlene Ruiters, the board members: Johanna Myburgh (chairperson), Remond Thomas (PA), Marie Loff, Liezel Waites, (Addisionals), Dinah Ruiters, Magdeline Moonie, Dawn Jantjies, Volunteers), Dinah Ruiters, Miriam Wabane(Pinelands Creche).John said his participation was only of sharing his knowledge and giving his advice on how to legalise everything. Now they have their own constitution and their NPO Status. Annie and Shirlene the main brains behind the school werevery happy and excited. At first they went back and forth but at lasteverything came to a point. Like Annie said,"each creche are allowed to accommodate only a certain amount of children. I saw the need, plus i have a passion to work with children." "Charity begans at home, but together with the parents we as the practiotioners are here to give them the ground rules, said Shirlene. The councilor by handing over the certificates said, she is very impressed with the fact that Annie and Shirlenes dream materialised. Last time they talked it was just a dream. Everybody were in awe when Johanna unveiled the schools name. A very impressive sunny faced school name sponsored by the Browns. The Kranshoek community had their own long walk to freedom with he Browns.

Educational freedom. The late Ted Brown and his family sponsored Kranshoek Primary for years with their end of year party. Also the Brown Bursary for the Kranshoek children. Now his children, George Brown and his wife Gill Brown is doing the same. They helped Jack & Jill to get on their feet. They also sponsored Kranshoek Kleuterskool. Mrs Brown said she is very impressed with Annie. She met Annie as a very shy lady, nothing to say. Now,wow, she is impressive. The Journey Starts with You

Some humans are weak in the mind, Sometimes it’s because of circumstances, Poor education or even chemical substances that lower the brain cells. But even so, don’t you have a conscious? Why accept the hurt society throws upon you? Why accept the pain? Why wish for the sun When you know your body loves the rain? Some humans just accept the circumstances And say: “there’s nothing one can do.” Wrong, there’s so much you can do. Rise up, bow your head in prayer, That is step one. Step two is trust, believe and love which is all up to you. Stand up for your heart, Start empowering your brain, If not, then you will go behind In life and maybe you’ll go insane. But who am I, you say, To tell you what to do? You are absolutely right, WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 12 APRIL 2012

But I’m speaking via you! I don’t judge, I don’t hide, I consider others first and live out my life. I speak through my art Because I know you’ll listen, You’ll listen ‘cause you’re scared to speak up Against society and crumble in. Open your eyes and see the world, Explore life like never been told. See laughter, animals and skies of blue This is your journey and it starts with you. Olivia Pika WILD WATERS Open Daily .
