presents Pria Mitchell Violin Daniel Rowland Violin/Viola Pieter Jacobs Piano Wednesday October 20, 2010 Prya Mitchell grew up in Oxford, England and has been called ‘one of the foremost violinists of her generation.’ She studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London and was chosen as the British Representative of the European Concert Halls Organisation ‘Rising Stars’ Series. Recitals in; Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, New York and Brussels Orchestras; English chamber Orchestra,London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic, Moscow Philharmonic, Deutsche SinfonieOrchester, Australian Chamber Orchestra. Pria opened the Cheltenham Festival with the BBC Philharmonic in July 2009. She has launched her own festival ‘The Oxford chamber Music Festival.’ Daniel Rowland was born in London but grew up in the Netherlands and studied at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and in Brussels at the Royal Conservatory. He has won ‘Brahms Prize’ of the Brahms Society in Baden-Baden and the prestigious Oskar Bach Competition at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. by Heidi What a fantastic Cake Sale we had on Friday. We managed to collect R 985.00 from all the cakes donated. We even had Cup Cakes with Doggie Bones as decorations. Special thanks to Vicky and Rosie for selling, and also to everyone who donated. All monies received, will be used towards vaccinating the little ones. The Charity Shop is doing very well. Signage up at last, stocked up well and looking great. Thank you to everyone who has donated, and also to those who have given up so much of their time, to make this venture the success that it is. The CVC will be hosting a Tea on Sunday, the 10th October, at 15h00, at the Goose Valley Golf Club. Richard Bolus of Redford Nursery, will be taking us on a delightful, informative tour, to view the splendid gardens in full bloom. The Southern Storm Duathlon
presented by Hi-Tec & Plettenberg Bay Tourism, undoubtedly rates as the most gruelling Multi Stage Duathlon in the country. Friday 1 October saw this epic race 90 top athletes finish when they rampaged down main street of Plettenberg Bay. Iain Don Wauchope - 2004 Duathlon World Champion managed to win the Southern Storm 2010 for the second time in a row. Racing The Impossible Race Natalians Iain Don- Wauchope and Jennie Bomford eventually emerged as the winners after six days of the most ndgruelling racing imaginable in the 2 annual Southern Storm duathlon presented by Hi –Tec . The Storm, dubbed in the media as the “impossible race” after local rescue coordinators expressed reservations about its achievability, is a staged race comprising of 13 brutal mountain biking and trail running legs in the remote Southern Cape wilderness regions which are marketed by Plettenberg Bay Tourism. At the finish line in Plettenberg Bay’s Main Road race director Mark Collins of Magnetic South admitted that the Southern Storm is not a race for mortals. “What these guys have just done almost defies belief,” he said. To give some measure of comparability with the man in the street , the Southern Storm starts off with a 42 km trail run on South Africa’s premium five day hiking trail, The Otter, regarded as tough by most hikers, accept that the Southern Storm competitors do it in under nine hours or face being removed from the course at five strategic compulsory cut off points. The leaders are able to complete the entire trail in less than five hours and this is only day one of this gruelling multi day duathlon . Race organisers balance this true test of trail running ability with mountain bike legs of equal intensity linking many of the regions finest trails. Whilst both overall winners held onto the converted leaders’ yellow jerseys from day one, victory was by no means a certainty for either of them till the very last leg. A few words of Thanks
A few weeks ago I was attending a church service where the minister preached about being thankful for all the blessings in our lives. At first I thought to myself “here we go again”. We hear the message about being thankful so often that we often tend to start taking things for granted. But after listening to the message again it got to me thinking about how being just a little bit more thankful could change the world. When the teachers went on strike many kids all over South Africa celebrated the start of another holiday. After all, surely having just a small break from all the work couldn’t hurt could it? That’s where reality started to set in. How were the matriculants of 2010 going to be ready for their prelim exams if they had no one to teach them? Maybe then the younger generation started realizing how important these hardworking teachers are for their own future careers. Here I’d like to pause and give some thanks to those teachers in the Bitou area who continued to work through those hard times. Being thankful for what we have in our lives is one virtue which all people should aim towards. Imagine if all the workers in South Africa were thankful for their current jobs and all the employers were thankful for the hard work their employees put in every day. I’m just a learner, but if everyone was more thankful then I think that the world would be a better place. And if you find it hard to be grateful for your circumstances, even if you're going through a difficult patch in your life, just remember that there always people out there who are going through worse times than you are. To give to the underprivileged in our community, both the young and elderly, some joy at Christmas time. It was the busy weekend for Ta! Mnce aka Maurice Ncedani and his Iphupha Theatre group as they started on Thursday at Club Afrocentric in Kwanokuthula performing for the very first time their new show called Igobondela “The love Portion” that deals with everyday challenges in our community between married couples that involves abusing and cheating in a marriage. The show was well attended by Kwanokuthula residents - although it was on an odd day of the week, the club was packed to capacity with the audience focused to the actors while having their drinks as the group turned the night club to be a theatre evening. Last Saturday once again Iphupha did what they do the best in the official opening of Kwanokuthula housing projects, entertaining the already excited audience as

they were about to receive their much anticipated houses Thanks to Bitou Municipality for delivering the housing promises to the people even those who had yet received theirs now they had hope that their turn will come to see their dreams of owning their own houses coming to a reality. Then Iphupha theater group performed their famous and well researched Ithembalabantu Ville written and directed by Mncedisi Maurice Ncedani a show that put him in his own league as it is relevant to the political history of Kwanokuthula especially when it comes to the issue of housing. I was also impressed by performance of the young girls between the ages of 9 to 11 years performing dance for a group called Imfene traditional group lead by their mother. On a sad note I would like to express my deepest condolences to Volofu family, Manchester United and Stephan United members for the death of Linda Stephen
Volofu who was affectionately known as Coach as he was very passionate and dedicated to the development of young people through soccer. Almost all the players that are playing in local teams were nurtured by him as the likes of Bandile Ntukantu, all the 3 Baloti brothers including the influential brothers in Plett Andile and Phaki Mbali were once in the books of Manchester United. On the 24th September we had a wine tasting evening at the Plett Market on main street. We had a wine tasting from different wine estates. Max Schwarts and Tai Eksteen were standing by the gate welcoming everybody with a huge smile on their faces and they were also showing people where to sit and where to place their orders for food and wine. I tasted a couple of wines form Angeut Sandy (Arrabella), Bramon wines which they are having a promotion in Cape Town around December and I tasted some of Zanulies wine estate which was the best for me. All these estates had absolutely magnificent wines I spoke to a couple of guests, asking them how is the night going they all said thumbs up to all the wine estates.. More than once I had to apply this in my own Christian life as things failed to turn out the way I had wanted them to be realised and in stead I was often left with a complete mess. It has been, especially, in those times that I turned back to the source of wisdom and insight - the infallible Word of God. And, what has been the central message that has come through time and time again? The story of the cross - the sacrifice of Jesus Christ by shedding His precious blood, dying for my sins, not only forgiving me and setting me free, but taking up residence in my spirit uniting Himself with me forever. The hymn writer, Julia Sterling, penned these beautiful words: "Oh, wonderful, wonderful Word of the

Lord! True wisdom its pages unfold; and though we may read them a thousand times o'er, they never, no never grow old." The cross of Jesus Christ is the central issue in God’s message and method of salvation. No wonder that Paul, the apostle, wrote the words quoted above in Galatians chapter 6, verse 14. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that there is no other way to be reconciled to God - no other way to gain true peace and freedom, no other way to really manage life. We need to come to the point where we are finished with all our self-effort and our own ambitions and ready to rely completely on the finished work of Christ on the cross. This is why Paul, a little earlier in the same letter to the Galatians, wrote: "But we know that God accepts only those who have faith in Jesus Christ. No one can please God by simply obeying the Law. So we put our faith in Christ Jesus, and God accepted us because of our faith." [Gal.2:16] Christ wants to be our very life and this means allowing Him and his cause first and foremost in all spheres of life. True Christianity is therefore not merely an intellectual belief in the fact that Jesus came to earth to pay the full penalty for sin, but it is an intimate relationship with Him, a union in which He becomes the life of the believers and their all in all. This world and all that it offers will soon pass away, but Christ and His

It was developed by some of the world’s most respected authorities on the subject. It quantifies the costs of medical care, community and residential care and informal (unpaid) care by families and friends, worldwide and for all world regions. Total costs for people with dementia amount to more than 1% of global gross domestic product (GDP), or US$604 billion, in 2010. If dementia care were athcountry, it would be the world’s 18 largest economy. If it were a company, it would be the world’s largest by annual revenue, exceeding Wal-Mart (US$414 billion) and Exxon Mobil (US$311 billion). A recent study from the UK showed that the costs of dementia exceed those of cancer, heart disease and stroke combined. The number of people with dementia will double by 2030, and more than triple by 2050. The per capita costs of care are also likely to increase, with greater awareness and increased demands for care, earlier diagnosis, more effective but more expensive medical care options, and an increasing need for intensive social care. Governments around the world are woefully unprepared - Dementia has cost and policy implications for a wide range of government sectors, including health, finance, social welfare, family and employment. - It is inevitable that governments worldwide will spend increasing proportions of health and social care budgets on older people living with chronic conditions. Conservation Corner
The past winter months have seen the sheltered waters of Plettenberg Bay being blessed by the annual visit of Southern Right Whales. During last couple of weeks the mating adults have departed these shores for colder waters, leaving behind adult females with their new born calves. The females come to this area to breed every 3 to 5 years, with calves suckling for 4 to 5 months. Numbers of Southern Right Whales have recovered dramatically since 1935, when commercial whaling ended in this area. At that time the worldwide population had plummeted to only 600 individuals. Since then, global numbers have increased to 6500, with around half of the animals visiting South African waters. Encouragingly the global population has doubled every 13 years. In comparison, the Northern Right Whale which is now only found in the North Atlantic is endangered with only 250 animals remaining. Residents and visitors to this area are fortunate to be able to see the growing numbers of these magnificent whales in these waters. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 7 OCTOBER 2010

LATEST...on the desalination plant and the small boat harbour. An interesting aspect is that both the above would be located in the identical area near the Central and Robberg beaches. The major difference is that the Desalination Plant is almost a 'Fait accompli', having started construction on the 1 September, the Small Boat Harbour however is still a 'pipe dream' after a ten year lapse in time. The desalination building is going to be a "low visual impact" building with sufficient isolation to obtain minimize sound emissions and with the architectural input and plant roof cover (crassulapellucida) the building ( 30m x 30m) will blend in with the natural surroundings. The abstraction options were investigated and a viable one was found from the Piesangriver mouth through seven shallow boreholes. This still to be confirmed. The brime release will be via an anchored pipeline, with diffusers, approximately 250 m into the ocean away from Robberg Beach at a depth of 4-5 m. The practical completion date is set for 18 Nov.'10. The harbor! As far back as August 1998 the Municipality invited proposals for 'the establishment of a Small Boat Harbor and Associated Development in Plettenberg Bay'. In July 1999 the council selected Western Cape Marina Investments (Pty) Ltd as the first preferred bidder. Heads of Agreement were entered into between the Municipality and the developer on 1 March 2002. Subsequently meetings were held
over the years with very little progress being made with the opinion of several heads of departments that the project is "going nowhere". The Integrated Coastal Management Act 2008 came into effect on 1 December 2009. It has far reaching implications for all spheres of government in coastal management. Part of the recommendations of the Municipal Manager is that all contractual obligations that may exist be cancelled by mutual agreement, on the clear understanding that no party will have any claim against each other for expenses already incurred, etc. Should the developer not be willing to accept the above immediate steps be taken to place on terms to ensure performance in accordance with all existing agreements.
