WHY HAVE LGBTQ+ PRIDE EVENTS?
Living in a hyper-liberal bubble like Long Beach, or the entirety of California for that matter, often creates an illusion of peace and acceptance. Yet, it feels like everyday that we’re reading headlines about the Trump Admisistration and Health and Human Services opposing the Equality Act and other various pieces of protective legislation, or unexpected hate crimes and acts of violence. People outside the LGBTQ+ community will still ask, “why have a pride celebration?” Surely, we as a people want for nothing else. Hell, we can finally get married — are we just being greedy? From the outside looking in, Pride is just one giant party. And at first approach, that’s exactly what it is. We’re celebrating; we got the promotion, we got engaged, found a surrogate, approved for them loan, didn’t get kicked out of the house after coming out, didn’t get beaten in the streets for holding our partner’s hand, didn’t get shot at during a night club. We celebrate what we can, for everywhere we look our
brothers and sisters are systemically being snubbed out. But we often forget that here in sunny California. But Pride is so much more than rainbow flags and drunken hookups. It represents our voice, our power. At LGBTQ+ rallies, a popular chant is: “Together. United. We won’t be divided!” Pride parades and festivals are merely a physical apparition of this. The first time I attended Long Beach Pride, I teared up. The sheer amount of bliss and authenticity was overwhelming. Moving through heteronormative society, you forget how much of your personhood gets swallowed or glossed over on day to day basis. You begin to censor yourself, finding small closets or pockets to cram you “otherness” into so that you fit in during that staff meeting. But not during Pride. NEW BRANDING, WHO ‘DIS? Long Beach Pride seeks to rebrand itself in order to revive the two-day festival.
Long Beach Pride is getting a fresh coat of rebranding this year. Celebrating its 36th anniversary with the theme “Millions of Moments of Pride, Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall,” Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride has begun the process of rebranding the festival. Most notably, LBLGP, the nonprofit that organizes the two-day festival and parade has begun seeking corporate sponsorship for the stages at the festival (see page 7). The future goal with the rebranding of the stages, according to a press release, is to assist with financially securing entertainment artist that are not currently within the scope of the Long Beach Pride’s budget. “This year, we welcome Anheuser-Busch, who has renamed the Fiesta Caliente Stage to the Estrella Jalisco Stage, and Nissan North America, Inc., who has renamed the Urban Soul and Main Stage, combined to create the Nissan Stage”, said Denise Newman, President of Long Beach Pride. “We need to continue to keep this event prosperous so that we can carry on the support to the LGBTQ+ community service organizations that heals us, provides the basic services that are sometimes denied to us and that fights for our right to be human,” Newman said. In line with rebranding, Long Beach Pride has also reduced the festival footprint to create a more intimate setting. The exploratory process will bring the festival grounds alive by adding color and providing interactive games on the festival grounds to coincide with the entertainment stages, vendors and food courts. Introducing the Nissan Stage The stage will come to life with headliner Aina Brei’ Yon. Self-defined as a creator of experiences, Aina’s talent of using her music to tell her stories
gave her the opportunity to open for artist such as J. Holiday,Talib Kweli, Soulja Boy and many others. DJ Starlett, the first lesbian DJ to be presented in any Playboy Magazine, DJ2lips who became the first On Air DJ for the Los Angeles radio station Mega 96.3, DJ Romeo from 93.5 KDay morning show. On Sunday, the stage will feature headliners Big Freedia, Ada Vox,Whitney Mixer & Mishelle, Sabrina La’Blanc & Carletta Courture who will host the Stone Wall Block Party.

Say hello to the Estrella Jalisco Stage Saturday features headliners Pablo Montero who has had a solid career as a singer, as well as in the environment of telenovelas and Marjorie De Sousa known worldwide for her villain roles in telenovelas has recently release the song Un Poquito Tuya. Sunday the Estralla Jalisco stage will welcome Diana Reyes. Ms. Reyes has been singing since she was 8-years old. Over the successful span of her career she has recorded 3-Gold Albums.
The Dance Stage The Dance stage will feature an eclectic blend of rhythmic beats to keep your feet moving all weekend long. The headliners for Saturday are Leopold Nunan Soares and ANI. Leopold arrived in Los Angeles at the age of 23 and quickly became an integral part of the LA nightlife and entertainment scene. He brings a soulful Brazilian flavor to house music. Though complicated, Long Beach has a long-standing history in the LGBTQ+ community (see page 9). From the iconic “Gayborhood,” to the plentiful classic gay bars, it seems a natural fit for the city to have its own Pride celebration. Long Beachers love their community, and the gays and allies of the International City arguably love it even more. Each year, turn out is strong and everyone has fun. Even Mr. Mayor. Being the youngest, the first Latino and the first gay mayor in Long Beach, most residents know Robert Garcia pretty well. But do they know his favorite part about Long Beach Pride? The Pride L.A. does! Read all about Garcia’s Pride experiences here: Are you excited for Long Beach Pride? Very much so. It's one of the best events of the year and we get a lot of people that come down to the city and check it out, so it's always fun. Do you prefer the parade or the festival? You know, I like both. I mean they're both

very different. I march in the parade every year. But I really liked the festival. I mean, the festival is, um, you know… I love the music and I love seeing all my friends, so I mean
they're both excellent, but I probably lean towards the festival. Is there anything new going on to festival that you're looking forward to? It's pretty similar every year. I think what I look forward to is actually the tradition of it, kind of being the same note, good music, great dancing, good food, seeing friends. So I really like all that tradition that’s there. Why does a city like Long Beach need a pride celebration? Well, we have a huge LGBT population. And I think that's really important. And so, it's celebrated. It's diverse, it's large, so
probably a great place to celebrate. It's also a good way to meet new people and new friends. Have you seen much of a change in Long Beach Pride since working for the City? I mean it always seems to kind of get bigger and more folks from out of town come. But it still has the same energy and it's still a lot of fun. So we're excited. What are some things that the city has done recently to support the LGBT community? I think there's always things going on. Just in the last couple years, the things that I can think of that stand out are that we’re doing a lot of work right now with with LGBTQ health and making sure that we're focused on issues around PrEP and HIV and STI health. We continue to be very trans-inclusive. We have one of the best trans-inclusive healthcare programs and within the city where we just launched a small business preference for LGBTQ businesses. What does pride mean to you? Pride means an opportunity to celebrate with your community and to be completely proud of who we are and to create a space that's free and open and welcoming for all people. Organizing Rainbows: Meet the Makers
Long Beach Pride:You know, you love it.With just as much fun and half the amount of people as L.A. Pride, who wouldn’t? There’s so much that goes into Pride weekend, from the festival and parade, to spin-off events for families and teens, to award ceremonies. Long Beach Pride weekend is nothing to stick your nose up at. But who makes it all happen? Meet the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc., the nonprofit behind our little Gay Christmas. The Pride L.A. spoke with LBLGP President Denise Newman about the makings of Long Beach Pride. Check it out:
of many Long Beach area business owners. From 1984 – 1987, the owner of the Executive Suite, Fred Kovelle, loaned LBLGP, Inc. the money needed to pay the city fees. After producing only two festivals and parades the organization was able to repay the loans. Shortly thereafter, a program was established whereby funds are donated to other non- profit organizations chosen by festival and parade volunteers, based on the number of hours the volunteer worked a practice that is still enforce today. Currently, we have a smoother working relationship with the City of Long Beach. Our festival and parade, in the month of May, is now recognized as a multi- million dollar boost to the local economy. How do you grow the success of LB Pride event? We pride ourselves on remaining community focused. Each year, we focus on how we can become more inclusive and welcoming.We believe the keys to our success should not always be focused solely on entertainment, but we have a growing understanding of the role entertainment plays in drawing guests to our event. We have also created a Fun Zone specifically for children and seniors. How does Long Beach Pride compete/keep up with big Pride events, like LA Pride? We never attempt to “compete” with other pride organizations. I believe the overall goal for all of us is to provide a safe, self-affirming, inclusive and supportive environment for our guest. What is new this year for Long Beach Pride? We are in the exploratory stages of rebranding our festival. The exploratory process will bring the festival grounds alive by adding color and providing interactive games on the festival grounds to coincide with the entertainment stages, vendors and food court. Why open up the stages to cooperate. Sponsorship? Many local pride organizations are supported
Can you introduce yourself? How long have you worked for Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, inc.? My name is Denise Newman I am the President of Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc. (LBLGP, Inc). This is my 6th year as a volunteer member. How long has Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, inc. been around? LBLGP, Inc. produced the first annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride festival and parade in June of 1984. Our founding members Marilyn Barlow, Judith Doyle and Bob Crow felt with such a growing number of LGBT community members, the time had come to increase awareness and to promote a greater sense of self-worth. Why bring a Pride event to Long Beach when LA Pride is so close by? One of founders, Bob Crow in the early 80’s would participate in LA Pride’s parade and noticed more than three quarters of the participates were from Long Beach. He concluded that maybe it was time for the LGBT community of Long Beach to create their own parade and festival. What was the first few years like compared to now? In the beginning, money to meet the city’s stringent fees was limited and the successes of the Gay Pride Celebrations were dependent upon numerous fund- raisers and the generosity

Festival officials hope to bounce back after significant financial losses since 2014.
Since 2014, the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival & Parade has seen a significant drop in revenue. It reached an alltime low during 2017’s event — records show that the festival saw a loss of $96,687 that year, as reported by the Long Beach Press Telegram. The two-day event, aimed at embracing members of the LGBTQ+ community and upholding queer pride, features live music, community events as well as food and drinks for all attendees. However, ticket sales have steadily declined since 2014 while the cost of entertainment for the event, as well as festival amenities, have only increased. Long Beach Pride Festival leaders have since asked Long Beach City Officials for financial assistance for this year’s pride event. Last year, Second District Councilwoman Jeannine Pearce mentioned she is looking for ways to lower the city’s fees imposed on Long Beach Pride — citing that she is looking at giving this year’s event a break on parking which, according to the Long Beach Press Telegram, racked up costs of over $25,000 during the 2017 festival. The 2019 festival will focus on celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Stonewall Riots, a defining moment in the history of LGBTQ+ rights. Aside from new entertainment and theme, many aspects of the event, run by non-profit organization Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Pride, will remain the same. For example, tickets will remain $20 and the event will be still be held at Marina Green Park and Rainbow Lagoon along Shoreline Drive. “The future goal is to have business partners who will assist in financially securing entertainment artists that are not currently within the scope of our budget,” Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, Inc. The other stage, sponsored by Mexican beer company Estrella Jalisco, will feature Mexican singer Pablo Montero as the stage’s lead act, according to a post by Long Beach Pride’s official Facebook page. The last time the event pulled in profit was during 2016’s event. Figures for the 2018 event have not been released. In 2016, the event pulled in $47,887. Fees imposed on the event by the City of Long Beach have steadily increased — from $140,000 in 2014 to approximately $180,000 last year, as reported by The Long Beach Post. These city fees include permits, parking and law enforcement. “Many local pride organizations are supported by city officials who graciously waive permit fees, as well as support fees from local law enforcement and fire,” Newman said. “Unfortunately, because of [Long Beach]’s ‘charter,’ the City of Long Beach is not permitted to provide financial assistance to LBLGP., Inc.” The decision for city officials to place more economic support behind the 36th annual event has seen approval from leaders apart of prominent Long Beach staples such as Dale Warner, owner of Hamburger Mary’s and The Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center, as reported by the Long Beach Post. “By partnering with local business, we can defer some of the costs of putting on our two day event,” Newman said. “It is also a wonderful way to highlight businesses who have become inclusive and welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community.” The Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival & Parade, will take place from May 1819. A DARK QUEER HISTORY
From an era-defining raid to a gentrification hotspot, a breakdown of Long Beach’s part in the movement. By Henry Giardina Long Beach’s queer roots go deep. Even if we’re, for some reason, not taking into account the city’s seminal role in criminalizing oral sex, the relationship between Long Beach’s LGBTQ+ residents and its history as a thriving city is quite rich, if also quite violent. Long Beach seems like it was always on the radar of queers trying to a find a place that wasn’t too LA-central or too suburban. In 1914, two men were arrested during a raid of the 606 Club and the 96 Club, two gay spaces that had been on the police force’s radar for some time. The bust was huge, and one of the first entrapment schemes that garnered wide press – especially after one of the victims took his own life later on. In the 1950s, gay bars like The Patch and gay societies like the Daughters of Bilitis and the Long Beach-based Satyrs Motorcycle Club offered a way for LGBT residents to gather far away from the threat of police raids. Later on, in the1980s, long-running lesbian bars like Que Sera popped up, which helped artists like Melissa Etheridge come to fame. In the midst of all this, however, the threat of entrapment, police violence and random homophobic acts lingered in the background.The first hardwon Long Beach Pride Parade in 1984 lasted only thirty minutes despite drawing a crowd of thousands. Judi Doyle, the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Parade President, was threatened with violence in the weeks leading up to the 1985 march. “There was no way we would not march. The board affirmed that, not that there wasn’t a sense of fear,” The 75-year-old activist told QVoice News. “But what came with the fear was a sense of anger...We weren’t going to be told that we need to sit in the back of the bus anymore. We

CALIFORNIA FAMILIES IN FOCUS Empowering young members of the LGBTQ+ community B y Keldine Hull California Families in Focus (CFF), founded by CEO Maria Angel Macias and Robert Charles Spieth III, strives to empower young members of the LGBTQ+ community through educational and art driven programs. Not only do they engage with the youth, but they also help facilitate a healthier home life by educating parents as well. According to Macias, “We want the youth to heal, but we also want the parents to be able to understand that it’s important the entire family learns at the same time. You can’t help a child and then send them back to a broken home.” Early on in life, Macias struggled with her own identity as she faced abuse both at home and in school. “I was one of those troubled teens. I grew up in a home where domestic violence was very prevalent. At school I was bullied because I was an immigrant, and we were very poor. Kids made fun of me and bullied me. It didn’t feel good to go to school.” Macias continued, “Being bullied at school and having this horrible life at home, I started rebelling. We lived next to the projects, and I became involved with gangs and drugs.” By the time Macias turned 12, she knew she liked girls. “I didn’t know what being gay was. All I knew was that I was attracted to this one girl. My mother happened to catch us. She beat the heck out of me and told the girl to leave. She told me that I was going to go to hell. My dad told me that he would rather have a dead child than a gay child.” After tumultuous and abusive relationships and a marriage in which Macias struggled to fit into societal norms, Macias met the

love of her life, Kimberly Maddox, and was finally able to live her life freely and authentically. “We were together for 17 amazing years, and those 17 years were the best years of my life and everything I could ever ask for. She was kind and compassionate. I was all about community, and so was she.” In December 2014, Maddox was diagnosed with stage III C cancer, and in September 2016, she lost her battle with cancer. Macias continued, “She made me promise her that I would return to what really matters, to make a difference in the community, speak up and advocate for the youth. Kim believed that would be the only thing that was going to heal my broken heart and mend my soul.” Through her own personal struggles, Macias discovered the strength to be a source of hope and inspiration within the community. She founded the allinclusive California Families in Focus, which officially incorporated in 2002. Macias explained, “We have after school tutoring and mentoring at our
office. We just recently did the ribbon cutting for our Kimberly Maddox Youth Dream Center, which we dedicated to my wife. We have high- tech touch screen computers where the youth can work on their homework, projects, and resumes.” CFF also enlists the aid of volunteers and mentors to help guide any of the youth who walk through their doors. Macias explained, “Lori Smith is a retired model who teaches them how to apply make- up for glam, a job interview, or just everyday life. She also teaches them photography. She graced the covers of Elle Magazine, Marie Claire. Now she’s giving her time to California Families in Focus.” Macias continued, “We have sewing machines so the youth can come and design their own clothing. We work with designers and some of the local drag queens. They teach them how to create their own designs, model, and give them skills that are conducive to who they are and what they’re interested in.” CFF also offers the Padrino Project, which gives custom tailored suits and gowns to trans teens for prom and graduation, parenting groups that meet ev-
ery Wednesday, and the Music, Arts, and Dance (MAD) Program. Macias continued, “We know that children need to heal. We help them express themselves. We use music, art, and dance as a form of therapy for the youth to heal and to get out whatever’s bothering them in a safe environment.” Macias continued, “If we don’t empower the youth and give them the skills that they need to be strong community members, we’re going to keep losing them. For over 25 years, after struggling with my own issues, I made it a point that I was going to fight for the youth and to advocate for them.” On September 22 at the Museum of Latin American Arts, CFF will host the first ever music festival for the LGBTQ+ in Long Beach. Somewhere over the “Arcoiris” Members of the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, share their story of struggle, success and ambition.
Carlos Samaniego, the founder and director of the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, still remembers the first same-sex wedding that the musical ensemble performed for when they regrouped in 2014. Samaniego took out an ad in Adelante, a Latinx LGBTQ+ magazine. His goal was to garner attention for his newly reformed band, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles. The mariachi’s origin dates back to the year 2000; however, the band’s first onset didn’t last more than eight
months, Samaniego said. Samaniego and his best friend Natalia Melendez — the first transgender woman mariachi in the history of mariachi music — were passionate, albeit skeptical, about the mariachi’s reiteration taking place 13 years after its original induction in the early ‘00’s. Shortly after the ad was published, Samaniego received a call from a man who couldn’t believe that an LGBTQ+ mariachi existed. “He said, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this,” Samaniego said. “That’s it — I don’t know what you guys sound like but I want to hire you for my wedding.” The man from the phone call had been struggling to find a mariachi ensemble to perform at his upcoming wedding. He, a gay Mexican man, was going to marry his American partner and thought a mariachi performance would be perfect for his special day. According to Samaniego, the man told him, “It’s been very stressful for me to hire a mariachi because I don’t know how the mariachi is going to feel playing at my wedding,” Samaniego said. “I don’t know if they’re going

to feel uncomfortable or how they’re going to feel. Now that I know that you guys exist, I want you there.” After agreeing to play at the man’s wedding, Samaniego felt saddened by the exchange he had with the engaged member of the LGBTQ+ community. “Straight couples never have to think about [whether] the mariachi is going to feel comfortable at [their] wedding,” Samaniego said. “What the hell is that, you know? That never crosses their mind. That doesn’t even come to play — yet it does for same-sex couples.” Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles wants the LGBTQ+ community to know that it stands with them, completely. However, members of the musical performance also want their heterosexual mariachi counterparts to recognize that they’re a musical force to be reckoned with. “We don’t bite unless they want us to,” Samaniego said. “We are human, like they are. We’re performing the same music as they are. Just because some of my guy [musicians] may be really feminine, or my girl [musicians] may be more masculine, or I have the first transgender woman in mariachi, doesn’t mean that we are any less of musicians then they are.” The mariachi has come a long way since it got back together in 2014. Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles — simply referred to as “Arcoiris” by its 11 members — originally formed at Cal State Los Angeles while Samaniego was a student there. The mariachi first played at an on-campus mock same-sex wedding, organized by members of the university’s LGBTQ+ student body, in protest of same-sex marriage being illegal in California at the time. However, that version of the mariachi struggled to reach the heights that the current version of Arcoiris enjoys, Samaniego said. “Back then, I was really young,” he said. “I was really inexperienced as a director. I was getting my degree in music. I had a lot of growing up to do, a lot of learning. So, the mariachi
did not last long — it didn’t last a year, maybe seven or eight months.” Following the first group’s disintegration, Samaniego traveled the world — residing in places like Italy and New York. Furthermore, he continued his work as a musician in an array of mariachi groups; however, each group he played in was comprised of mainly straight musicians. Although he felt impassioned about playing mariachi music, he did face constant discrimination for being an openly gay mariachi in several of these bands. Aside from the rampant anti-LGBTQ+ remarks made by his fellow straight mariachis, Samaniego felt uncomfortable in the hyper-masculine environment created by these people. For example, Samaniego disliked the fact that he wasn’t able to serenade a same-sex member of the audience. After all, his musical passion was centered on playing Mexican folkstyle music — a genre which heavily features themes of love, conquest and romance. However, now Samaniego and his fellow bandmates are able to freely serenade who they please at any of their performances. “Before Arcoiris came along, you never saw a man singing to another man on a serious level or a woman singing to another woman on a serious level,” Natalia Melendez said. “I feel, being LGBTQ+, when you can experience that engagement, watching an artist do their thing on stage, and it touches you and their singing to you, there’s something personal — there’s something very, very special about that,” Melendez said. “We give that to our public, especially to our gay community, we give that to them to let them know that, hey you can have a man sing to you — real macho and real strong and real beautifully — and you can have a woman sing to you. In the beginning, that was unheard of — people shied away from that.” Melendez, who was apart of Mariachi Ar-

Creating Unity Through Vulnerability
As a child growing up in Manhattan, Los Angeles-based performer, Enrique Jesus Hernandez, called 911 more times than he can remember. “My mom was essentially a single mom, and unfortunately in her relationships, there was a lot of violence,” Hernandez said. Countless trips with his mother to the E.R. and an incessant cycle of abuse left young Hernandez numb. Only as an adult, and away from the violence, was the artist able to begin healing childhood traumas and he used music as the tool. Through his E.P. Hunger City, Hernandez wanted to send a message of hope to others experiencing similar suffering. Inspired to do more through performance, after the release Hernandez created gAYGUTs a monthly event at Boardners in Hollywood where healing happens through performance and art, and anyone Queer in Los Angeles can experience community. In his song “The Base,” Hernandez sings, “there’s a base in my brain I stand there stunned,
and my bones remain encased.” He said this explains the “shutdown element” that is the only way a child can escape a situation where they are trapped, powerless while a parent suffers domestic abuse. “The overwhelming state of my circumstance would just numb me, and I’d go to this place in my brain where I was in some type of case…That’s where I’d go so that time would go by and if time went by then the sun would come up, and if the sun came up it was time for school, and if it was time for school I’m out of the house. Time was always on my side; if I could just hold onto this, thank God time continues to move forward without me having to do anything with it,” said Hernandez of being a small boy enduring the attacks upon his mother. In other lines of the song, Hernandez sings that the walls keep giving him their backs. Explaining that the barriers a victim builds for protection can ultimately block outside help. “This cycle of trying to protect oneself but then also preventing resources to come in results in this paralyzing hopelessness,” he said.
The feeling of hopeless a victim suffers is something Hernandez wants to help eliminate in those listening to his music. “I want them to hear this and think if this piece of music exists in the world, then it means that it has happened with someone else which means that 'I’m not the only one' which means that there might be hope,” he said. The gAYGUTs live show, held once a month at Boardners in Hollywood, is an extension of this concept. The idea that no one should feel isolated suffering through any situation in which they find themselves alone. Unity Through Vulnerability is the gAYGUTs mantra. Entertainment for the evening varies from pop to rap, spoken word to any manner of performance art. What unites the night is that it is a safe place for Queer artists to spill their “guts” something Hernandez hopes leads to having “really truthful expressions of Queer Artists be normalized.” Once a month gAYGUTs happens at Boarders in Hollywood at 1652 N Cherokee Ave, Los Angeles. Yas, KINGQUEEN: An Unconventional Hollywood Fairytale In a conventional sense, INA lived a beautiful Hollywood Dream. Signed to Universal Music and working as a singer-songwriter, INA’s career started like a scene in a movie. Arriving in Los Angeles from Sweden, the singer-songwriter said,“like everyone else, I was party, party, party.” One night, at an after-party she had organized at her apartment on Sunset and Vine, a couple of A & R reps from Universal Music came scouting. “I had an iTunes playlist that would just go in the background,” INA explained adding she always included a few of her own recordings to the mix. The record label reps liked what they heard. The beginning was a dream come true, but soon INA felt her identity spinning out of control. “You start saying yes to everything until you can’t say no.” Not wanting to appear ungrateful, INA said she kept going, telling herself, “maybe this is how everyone is doing it, maybe Lady Gaga hates Poker Face?” Cue Record Scratch. At 11-years-old, INA’s biological father, in her own words,“just beeped off.” He “was horrible,” INA said adding that she grew up in a “very abusive household” many details of which remain tangled in legal proceedings that prevent her from talking freely. However, INA remembers that every day before her mother filed for divorce and her father left the family for good, he would tell her, “you’re never going to be loved. You’re retarded.” Bicycling home after school, young INA would feel sick anticipating what she might face when

“I’ve survived so many things in my life so for me to be on a stage singing about something that doesn’t mean anything doesn’t make sense,” says INA of L.A. pop-rock group KINGQUEEN.
the door opened. She said she would worry, “is my Mom going to be Ok? What is my Dad going to tell me today?” School provided no relief. “Going to school my stomach was hurting,” she said. Growing up, INA said she “was very different” and refusing to conform made her a target. “I was really bullied. Abused. One kid pulled my hair out. I was bald on one side,” she said. In the song One Day, INA sings, “If I could go back in time tell you everything is gonna be alright I wouldn’t do it. I know it’s gonna hurt for awhile but it’s gonna be fine and there’s a reason to it. I know it made no sense when those kids threw you in the trash. Everybody laughed.” Yep, if those kids could see INA now.The singer said she would do it all again because it led to the strength and life she has today.
Never forgetting her childhood struggles, INA’s drive to remain radically authentic when it came to her music led to her needing to break away from her label. “I kept thinking, man, I’ve survived so many things in my life so for me to be on a stage singing about something that doesn’t mean anything doesn’t make sense,” she said. When the record company asked her to write a song about life in Los Angeles, INA said, “I wrote about the homeless, what I had experienced, what I thought was really sad and dirty and just not the shiny Hollywood that I had seen on TV. But, that turned into me cruising with my boy in a car to the beach.” First up, INA doesn’t have a drivers license. She also didn’t like the lie of playing the role of girlfriend in a faux heterosexual relationship. She hit a low point. Enough was enough. A big fan of Joan Jett, INA went to see The Runaways movie. She found Kim Fowley’s role in launching Jett’s career inspiring albeit mired in controversy. She said, “I know Kim wasn’t portrayed as the best person, but I remember thinking, I need to meet someone like him, that just really believes in you, but he’s crazy, right?” Setting intentions to have them manifest is something INA likes to practice. Even as a child, she would tell people something was going to happen as a way of hoping it would happen. However, she didn’t quite expect to manifest the real thing when it came to Fowley. “I was invited to an A & R Interscope/Universal networking event, and he was there,” she said of meeting the late Fowley in person. He put her
on the spot, asking her to sing. INA said, “I just started belting Sweet Child of Mine, and he goes, ‘do you wanna get out of here?’” INA agreed to join Fowley for dinner. She said, the two connected on a creative level and at no point did he ever act “creepy” or inappropriate. After the meal, Fowley asked INA where she was headed. When she answered, “home,” he said, “wrong answer. We’re going to go to the studio.” The following late-night recording session seeded what would go on to become the independent Los Angeles pop-rock group KINGQUEEN of which INA is the front woman. INA said she counted Fowley as a friend. He gave her the impetus needed to be herself, allowing her to connect to the sadness of her childhood and use it to empower others. Because of this, for so many people, KINGQUEEN is a voice that gives permission to shine, and for INA, this is her Hollywood Dream come true. Strides of Pride at the Long Beach Pride Run
While some Long Beachers are deep in slumber recovering from the festivities of the first night of Long Beach Pride Festival, nearly 200 local LGBTQ+ and allies are lining up Sunday morning to run the 2019 Pride 5k/10k along the bike path. Why? To celebrate Pride, of course! “This is my favorite time of year,” said Asaaf Weinberg, the president of Shoreline Frontrunners and Pride Run race director. “The Pride Run is a great way to get ready for the parade.” Historically, the Pride Run, which has been in existence for 27 years, was always
on Saturdays. However, Weinberg said that they switched it to Sundays about four years ago so that it would be the same day as the parade. “We see better turnout,” Weinberg explained. Last year, the Frontrunners – the running club that organizes the event – saw 185 runners in attendance. This year, they hope to break 200. In comparison, the pride run in New York – where World Pride will be held this year – sees over 10,000 attendees each year. “We might not make those kind of numbers,” Weinberg said playfully. “But it is a lot of fun. It is a celebration of who we are because visibility is so important.” This year’s theme for the run is the Stonewall 50th Anniversary. The theme is decided in January, and usually the Frontrunners try to match or compliment the Long Beach Pride theme. “This year we were a little eager,” Weinberg said. “This theme was kind of easy to come up with.” This year, there will be complementary bag check donated by FedEx. There will be
a medal ceremony rolling the run, awarding the “most spirited individual” and “group running attire.” The Long Beach Pride Run is apart of a pride
run circuit, in which runners will received a bonus medal for running four West coast pride runs. The Long Beach Pride Run is on Sunday, May 19 at 8 a.m. For more information, visit the Shoreline Frontrunners website at sflb.com

I felt I could write to you because you could relate to this issue in particular. As an Asian gay male, often I feel invisible in the community. As you must know, Asian guys and people of color in general are not considered the most desirable race to hook up with. It takes away my self confidence! I want to go to Long Beach Pride and have a great time, but I am so nervous because the thought of getting rejected is so painful and I feel like an ugly duckling sometimes. Why are people so racist with closed minds? What do I do? Do you have any advice? Dear Gaysian Brother, YES! I have advice for you. I do have a controversial view on the topic of race and attraction and it might not necessarily be the most popular opinion. So, I'm getting ready for backlash but screw it – it's my column! While I do think that people could be more sensitive to others around the topic of race, I do not think that someone not wanting to date an Asian person makes them racist. I'm not on Grinder to seek a social justice movement I can join in on. I’m on because I want to find a guy that I am compatible with! So I think people should be able to express their preferences when it comes to their sexual proclivities without abandon BECAUSE … (Wait for it) WHY HOOK UP WITH SOMEONE WHO YOU ARE LESS THAN ANIMAL ATTRACTED TO OR WHO IS LESS THAN ANIMAL ATTRACTED TO YOU? Check it out. Essentially if you are hooking up with a guy who is trying to be open minded and "Giving Asians a Chance,” they are using YOU to expand their horizons and satisfy some need to quell their guilt or some other issue blah blah blah. My feeling is everyone deserves to go on dates that they want to be on unequivocally 100 percent and there should not be any question. I want to be with a guy who appreciates my awesomeness inside and out and nothing less will do! And nothing less should do for you either! So that being said, I agree with you. YES, as a population as a whole, Asian men are not the most popular genre of men. For those of you who don't know, Asian men are the LEAST popular group as far as online dating and pick up success out at bars etc. But this can be a GOOD or BAD thing depending on how you look at it. For example, I am a 6'1 Gaysian with muscles and broad shoulders, and I'm a bottom too (which I tell everyone proudly because the bottom-shaming has to stop). So – that's not necessarily a combo that is the easiest or most popular sell. WHY? Because Asians have been associated

So what I am suggesting is: The number of the men who are interested in your looks should not be the determining factor of your self-worth! EVERYONE is into their thing and just because you don't fit that criteria does not make you any less viable as an attractive person.There are guys out there for whom you are THE HOT THING! Furthermore, looking at the other side of the coin, white guys have their own struggles. I've thought about this and numbers-wise the most popular category, but the problem is there are LOTS OF WHITE GUYS. Nothing special. So one could see a hot guy, then talk to the next one, then the next one, then the next and they all start to blur together. But you are a RARE GEM that some will REALLY see truly special. I recommend focussing on being the BEST YOU that you can be. A kind, generous, open hearted, loving, funny person so you can really shine as the fabulous gaysian that you are and stop focussing so much on "THE NUMBERS' and the "RATE OF RETURN.” I can say this cause I'm asian: STOP with a the math, grab a rainbow flag or two and go to Long Beach Pride to have some fun! It’s the most wonderful time of year. Love and acceptance is in the air, rainbows – everywhere. Christopher Street West, the nonprofit organization that hosts LA Pride is West Hollywood each year has announced its full lineup. Pride season is upon us. With an all-new stage layout for 2019, all artists, regardless of genre, will be featured on two stages located inside the LA Pride Festival grounds. From hip-hop and pop to Latin and EDM, this year’s performers are coming together on both stages to celebrate this year’s theme, #JUSTUNITE, which recognizes that the work the LGBTQ+ community does together ultimately makes it stronger and more resilient than ever before. Joining this year’s previously announced allstar lineup are a diverse group of artists including global Latin superstar Cristian Castro, the newest hip-hop queen CupcakKe, LGBTQ rapper and singer Kodie Shane, infectious indie pop group The Drums, Australian pop princesses The Veronicas and more. Previously announced performers for the LA Pride Festival, which takes place June 7-9 in West Hollywood Park, include headliners GRAMMY® Award-winning global superstar Meghan Trainor and British electronic pop trio Years & Years and will be joined by GRAMMY® Award winner Ashanti, plus Amara La Negra, Dej Loaf,

This year the organizers of the LA Pride Festival are also hosting the “Pride on the Boulevard” block party, which opens Pride to the entire Los Angeles community. “Pride on the Boulevard” is free to the general public and will include a vast array of local LGBTQ+ artists. Rising pop artist Bronze Avery, Sony Music recording artist DIIMOND, Latin performer and LGBTQ activist Heartthrob Rob, dance music’s go-to house super songstress Kaleena Zanders, Lesbian feminist and popstar Zolita, hip-hop goddess, the industry’s first Trans rap sensation Lady Londyn and more will take to the stage on Santa Monica Boulevard between San Vicente and Robertson Boulevard
in West Hollywood. Festival-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at lapride.org. General admission single-day tickets ($30) and weekend passes ($50) are still available. “Backstage VIP Experience” single-day tickets ($250) and weekend passes ($450) are also still available for purchase and include a dedicated VIP entrance to expedite festival entry, backstage access to the Park & Plaza Stages, two complimentary SKYY Vodka cocktails and a complimentary afternoon meal. Additionally, volunteers, who can donate four hours of their time to the celebration, receive complimentary tickets to the festival. coiris de Los Angeles’ first rendition in the early ‘00s, began playing mariachi-style music at the age of eight. 30 years later, she feels as though she’s reached a prime in her career as a musician. “I feel a great deal of responsibility,” Melendez said. “I’m quite honored, I’m quite proud of who I am and what I stand for.” Although Arcoiris is the world’s first – and only – completely LGBTQ+ mariachi, members of the band hope that won’t be the case for long. Both Samaniego and Melendez, who have been best friends for years, encourage other LGBTQ+ musicians to either band together and create their own LGBTQ+ musical collective or join Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, if they’re up for the challenge. “Transmen and transwomen — I encourage all of them to do it,” Melendez said. “Whether

I would love to share the stage with my fellow transwomen.” Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles has seen a great deal of success in the last year. They released their first full-length record, titled “Los Arcoiris.” They headlined the 2018 “El Grito” festival in Grand Park — an annual event which showcases some of the most-talented mariachi groups ever. Their upcoming plans, for this month, include playing at the American Embassy in Madrid, Spain and celebrating Long Beach Pride by performing a three-hour set during one of Hotel Maya’s “12 Months of Maya-Achis” events on May 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We uphold that not only does Arcoiris stand for a safe place but we also stand for the best for the best,” Melendez said. “That’s what we want to put out there.”

Therapy and Growth in Art
An LGBT figure artist well known over the past 20 years for his whimsical and erotic depictions of young boys searching for love and identity, Rene Capone is re-entering the art world with his first show in nearly six years after battling a chronic HIV-related health condition. The show is a love letter to someone special in his life, and a hopeful divergence from his earlier works of longing and despair, though his signature mythic qualities are more vibrant than ever. What happens when an artist finds true love? Capone shows us his journey from bruised to still breathing, taking us on the wild ride of his imagination. The Pride L.A. spoke with Capone to find out: Tell me a little bit about your upcoming art show? What does it represent to you? The show to me represents change. Artistic change and change of perspective on how I see the world. Change too me dose not feel gracefull rather more like overlapping patterns that crunch down on top of one another like boulders. This is why I called the show "Morié." After change, you might actually be all the better for it, mentally speaking or show up at dinner parties with all your limbs & that's a wonderous thing.To me the shows say's, I may have fell down but I also got back up. Why an art show now after six years? It's the first time in six years that I have been physically able to really produce and show what I would consider to be a body artwprk worthy of being callled an "artshow." There is a theme and a thread that runs through all images. I simply was just too injured before to acomplish this.Although I tried my best to keep up. I was involved in group shows in SF and I happy to have been but this is different. I also have not put most of the artwork up online or really dicsused it at length with my fans, not even my freinds becaue I wanted to have weight to it. If your going to drop a brick you might as well make it a cinder block. So right before the show opening I will post video of the show and go in to the images indepth online. How has your health/battle with HIV shaped as an artist these past several years? I took a drug called Truvada and it destroyed my bones as a side affect. My femur bones snapped and I had to have both my hip replacements I was 36 years old. I had become a working artist around the age of 22, right out of art school so it most certainly re shaped my life. I certainly was not going to be standing while I was drawing. All the surgeries took about five years and while I was struggling to keep up with my life basically my life fell apart. The company that makes that drug will be court all next year and probably for the next five years as it is now well known that they knew of the dangerous side affects of their medication all while keeping
doctors and even the FDA in the dark for well over ten years. I learned to speak lawyer and I made sure I was legally present and represented in the first class action suit filed this year at the LA County court house. So it shaped my life physically it shaped my life by breaking my sense of right & wrong, and then it shaped my life by asking me the question, what are you gonna do about it? I did not have a battle with HiV, I had a battle with a corrupt evil corporation who made huge amounts of profits of the sufferings of human beings. Being a victim of it doesn't bother me as much as having to grapple with the esistence of something so evil. There is a feeling of having the air taken out of ones lungs when you encounter malificent evil and it's terrifying. Is it reflected in your upcoming show? My god yes! but hopefully for the greater good and for just some mental stability. One can take all the bad experiences they have in life and become bitter, angry and basiclly a big old Donna Downer that no one wants to be around. I just can't be that person. Perhaps I'm just overly optomistic. So I went in search of source material that would give me back some of the innocence I felt was unessesarily ripped from my body. I ended up finding old photopraphs from the Wiemer Replic in Germamy and there I discovered the romance of being a "figure painter" again. Tell me a little bit about your style? I've always drawn characters that give off emotion that for better or worse really attach themselves to people. Because I am me, it's terrible hard to describe my style.There are tons of people who have done it for me, so it's only fair I attempt to do it myself. Mysterious, emotional and like being trapped in the vibratto of a Judy Garland high note. I'm making dreams for people to get lost in. How has it evolved over the years? The layers of emotion have become more grounded. I've learned much about symbols, history & physcology and those subjects greatly inform and place my characters in worlds that although are not real, feel more acurate for them ... and more fun for me. Being able to place my characters somewhere in time helps convey their messages. What are some obstacles you find yourself overcoming as an artist of nearly two decades? To not give up, to keep searching through the unknown. To be an artist is to keep a sense of wonder in the world around you and athough it may go unseen my most, it is most certainly is there. I myself an not amune to loosing that sense of discovery. So I have to search for it too. I have to lock myself in a room turn off all communication devices and do my job. Why choose Long Beach for your art show? Frankly. I just thought it looked lovely and it just so happened that I had made many artistic friends and commands down in Long Beach
through The Out Loud LB festival who hinted there is something happening artistically here and I should check it out. It seemed to me to be a scene about to pop up out of it's own box. Artists have away of knowing these things. What do you want patrons to get out of your show? To find the mystery of your own life, embrace and follow it like a fairy tale. Even when it's hard it's usually better than giving up on life. I know the the characters I create through the expressions of their faces or the hinted nature of their back stories do actually inspire a change in perspective in viewers and this is something I would like to keep doing because it feels authentic. Any suggestions for people trying to pursue their dreams? You will never know if you do not try.Amazing things happen when an object or thought is put into motion.Things have away of falling into place even when they seem impossible. Ok now as far as following your dreams - of I followed my dreams I would be on space ships hanging out with aliens in some bizarre war at the edge of the universe. These are my dreams and they are usually terrifying. NIghtly I am
chased in spaace by aliens. I'm not so sure I'm ready for that yet. Let's say follow your passions ... or one of your reader might end up on Mars and I don't feel like being held responsible.
