anuary can feel like a stodgy month after all the Yule-tidings, especially if you ate as much, drank as much and attended as many Christmas parties as we did. If you did, well done. You are probably feeling as worn out and overweight as us. For those that celebrated here, you may have noticed Mexicans practice a few unusual rituals to ring in good fortune in the New Year. For instance,

the clothing worn at the end of year celebrations has a special meaning to people. White clothing is used to ward off illness and to attract good health. Those interested in attracting money tend to wear yellow underwear, or, if it is love you are after, use red underwear. It is very traditional to eat 12 grapes as the bells are sounding during the countdown, representing one wish for every month of the year. Some also put money in their left shoe to attract prosperity. Those who wish to travel take a couple of suitcases and run around the

block in their neighborhood; the farther they run, the farther their trip will be. Alternatively, we thought we would let you know a few options that will help get your health back on track, realign your inner-strength, relieve those aches after a busy season of festivities. This edition is jammed packed with healthy options and recommendations in the Riviera Maya. No matter what type of ritual you practice, the most important thing is to make sure 2016 provides you with “a new year, a new life.”

Red Cross Solidaridad Celebrates Two Years The Playa del Carmen chapter has provided support and relief for a number of disasters, including Hurricane Emily, Katrina and the Haiti earthquake BY JOE MALDONADO

n December 8, the Mexican Red Cross in Solidaridad celebrated two years since the inauguration of their operational base on Ave. Chemuyil between Ave. Tecnológico and calle Ceiba, Villamar II, next to the IMSS. The work of this nonprofit organization has benefited not only this community for the last twenty years, but also has helped those in tragedies such as the Haiti earthquake in 2010, and Hurricane Katrina which affected a large part of the United States in 2005. Efraín Chuc Chan, current director of the Red Cross in Solidaridad, recalled the arrival of the organization at the end of 1990. At that time, the building was located on the corner of Juarez Avenue and 25th Avenue. It was on August 8, 1992, when the first class of 22 emergency workers graduated and began to provide professional services to the community. The Solidaridad delegation of the Red Cross organized the donation center after hurricanes

The Red Cross has grown in the last few years, in 2012 they opened their base in Puerto Aventuras, although it has been more difficult to maintain and they are asking for donations to keep it in service. In November 2013, when the Villas del Sol base opened, they moved to the location in Colonia Villamar II.

An Economic Boost for Mexico

BY JOE MALDONADO

T

he Secretary of Tourism Innovation and Development, Carlos Joaquín González, expressed that Mexico is the tourism sector’s leader with regards to sun and beach, but it is necessary to diversify the country ’s tourism offerings. González explained that medical tourism is a sector that has great potential for the country. In 2012, Mexico received 1,100,000 medical tourists, whose provenance was mainly from the United States and Canada, according to data from the Secretary of Economics. On a worldwide scale, Mexico placed second in medical tourism, after Thailand. “Among the advantages of Mexico is its proximity to the United States and Canada, the lower costs, with savings up to 80 percent in drugs and treatments when compared to the United States,” indicated Carlos Joaquín González. “The weaknesses

are that we have grown in a disorganized way. There is no uniformity nationwide and specific regulations, there are many isolated efforts, and no clear offers of services.” The certifications will be important, as this will create Mexico as a brand name, and from there the specialization of each business will be created. To promote this segment of tourism in the region, the headquarters for the Association of Medical Tourism in Quintana Roo, also known as Medical Travel Mexico, is located in Cancun. It has been in operating since 2010, and consists of hospitals and clinics specializing in plastic surgery, in vitro fertilization, stem cell, dental care, and hemodialysis, among others. In 2014, close to 8,000 patients visited Cancun to receive world class, medical services, spending between $3,000 and $4,500 dollars each in accommodation and treatments combined. The company Wohmedic has

launched a discount card with treatments in Cancun, with the aim of attracting additional travelers seeking healthcare. “Cancun is starting to stand out in this sector as are many border towns with the U.S. because the hospitals certified by U.S. insurance companies receive general and cheaper, treatments not just the aesthetic kind,” explained Darío Flota Ocampo, general director of the Tourism Promotion Trust of the Riviera Maya. Depending on the procedure

Darío Flota Ocampo General Director of the Tourism Promotion Trust of the Riviera Maya required, Mexico offers savings of between 36 percent and 89 percent in comparison with the costs of the United States. For example a heart valve replacement costs $170,000 dollars in the United States, while in Mexico it costs $18,000 dollars. A knee replacement in a North American hospital costs $50,000 dollars but can be done in our country for $12,000. A nose job can be $8,000 dollars in the United States, while it won’t be more than $3,500 dollars in Mexico.

Playa del Carmen’s Achievements in 2015 As one of the fastest growing areas in Latin America, we look back at the advances in social infrastructure, safety measures over the last year BY MELISSA ROBLES

015 was a successful year for Playa del Carmen. As the heart of the Riviera Maya, achieving advances not only in the tourism sector but also with public works, culture, especially in the inclusion of people with different abilities. The municipal president, Mauricio Góngora Escalante, indicated that they established a balance in the goals they sought to achieve. “We have advanced in an important way in protecting those with different abilities, for instance, through the campaigns to respect the reserved parking spaces that have had

great success, and the inclusive beaches with wheelchair access,” he indicated. Public transport operators were trained to assist this sector of the population. The municipality’s objective is to create public policies that would give those with disabilities the same opportunities as the rest of the community. Regarding public safety, for the first time the community was involved through two programs: crossing guards at schools, in which the elderly were employed, and the neighborhood watch system - an emergency alert that can be activated through any telephone, landline or cellphone. With the alert, people who feel at risk can dial a number, and a text message is then sent to their neighbors and emergency services. The tourist sector has exceeded all expectations by attracting 4.5 million vacationers this year. Hyatt

and Thompson hotels opened their doors this year, and Playa’s Quinta Avenida is undergoing renovations worth $15 million pesos. Investments have continued in the area. During only the first half of the year, 500 new small and medium sized businesses have opened, generating 1,170 jobs. The City Theatre, since its opening in July, has been the location of the jazz, dance, and theater festivals, and has offered free events. Lastly, public works have spent $20 million pesos on resurfacing roads and has implemented the “Illuminating Solidaridad” program, which has installed more street lighting. They also finished the bicycle path on 20th Ave. in Colonia Colosio. In Ejido Sur, El Pedregal and Ampliación Bellavista, $50 million pesos have been spent to pave streets, and fixing drainage issues.

The Christmas Posadas BY ALEJANDRA CAMPO, ANTHROPOLOGIST

After someone falls for a prank, shout out ¡Inocente palomita! / Photo: momsgoneglobal.com

Mexican A p r il Fo ols’ The national day to play a prank on someone in Mexico does not take place on April 1, but on December 28. It is known as El Día de los Santos Inocentes BY RODRIGO DE LA GARZA

T

he European-born custom of April Fools’ is now a widespread tradition that has people all over the world waiting for April 1 to unleash pranks big and small on friends, coworkers and family. While most of us play at most an innocent joke on a close friend and enjoy watching poor souls become the victims of some elaborate pranks on YouTube, it’s a fun day for kids and a unique tradition to amuse ourselves with once a year.

After someone falls for a prank, one is to yell ¡nocente palomita! or “innocent little pigeon”, though nobody actually does that here in Mexico, just laugh it out with your victims. Mexicans probably won’t know about April Fools’, or at most might have heard of it in passing, however we have our own tradition of a once-a-year day where we prank each other (as do most cultures around the world). For us living here in Playa with such a large expat community, this gives us twice as many opportunities to play practical jokes on friends every year. Mentions of what is now April Fools’ in literature date back to the 14th century, but it is believed to be a continuation of the Roman tradition of Hilaria, religious festivals celebrated on the vernal equinox, themselves inspired by the Greek. The custom evolved in Europe and was eventually exported to America where it has taken root and become a major part of “western” pop culture. The Mexican equivalent of this jocular convention is known as Holy Innocents Day or El Día de los Santos Inocentes and is celebrated

on December 28. It is originally the remembering of the killing of the male children of Bethlehem by Herod (hence the Holy Innocents), as described in the gospel of Matthew. Both in Spain and Latin America it is now common practice to pull pranks on this date; news outlets such as newspapers and TV news shows also present fake notes poking humor at events, politics or personalities. In some countries in Latin America, one should not lend things to others on the day as, according to tradition, it allows the borrowers to take possession of the item and never have to give it back to its owner. After someone falls for a prank, one is to yell ¡Inocente palomita! or “innocent little pigeon”, though nobody actually does that here in Mexico, just laugh it out with your victims. So whether an expat or a local, let’s take every opportunity we can to have a little fun with our friends and play some innocent pranks on each other, just make sure everyone will be laughing at the end. And remember… “Laughter is an instant vacation” Milton Berle

Las posadas is a celebration to receive the Baby Jesus at Christmas, from December 16 to 24. Each day representing the nine months of the Virgin Mary’s pregnancy The tradition for posadas came from the evangelization activities in New Spain (Spain’s colony in the Western Hemisphere from the 16th to 19th centuries). Previously, the indigenous people prepared for the celebrations of their gods for nine days before their feasts and the winter solstice. These similarities were taken advantage of by the Spanish, in this way, the imposition of the Catholic religion was easier and more effective. Additionally, because of the language barrier, the priests looked for a way to teach them the new religion through representations of biblical passages, bringing rise to the posadas, pastorelas (Christmas plays), and piñatas. The posadas evoke the moment that the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph looked for a place to spend the night without luck until they found a stable with a manger, and there the child Jesus was born among the cows and oxen. In fact, the word for posadas is translated in English as “inn”. The celebration of the posadas takes place in churches, neighborhoods, and houses, changing places each day. It begins with a rosary and a litany, and then part of the attendees go out to the street to ask for shelter, those inside deny them in remembrance of the biblical passage. When people call at the houses of friends and neighbours, they sing a special carol called La Canción Para Pedir posada, which is about asking for a place to stay. Each person who participates in the posa-

das carries a candle and a songbook. When those on the streets are finally offered shelter, the party continues with music, lights, boxes of candies, fireworks, typical Mexican dishes, and fruit punch, which sometimes includes alcohol for the adults. The children usually dress like the shepherds who followed the star of Bethlehem that guided them to the baby Jesus. The traditional seven pointed piñata is also broken; there is usually a pastorela (a Christmas play), which is a satire of the fight between good and evil. The nativity scene is displayed in each house. The season of posadas starts on December 16 and comes to an end when the baby Jesus is placed in the manger on December 24.

How WhatsApp and Facebook helped put a stop to environmental destruction and a community comes together to fight for children’s environmental rights in Cancun

O

n July 30, 2015, an audio message spread on a WhatsApp group made up of mostly mothers in Cancun. The message called for help, describing the demolition and tearing up of trees and mangroves while birds tried to save their nests and crocodiles were at risk of being buried. The message also brought together about forty women in an area called Malecón Tajamar, located in downtown Cancun, next to the Nichupté Lagoon. The Facebook page, Salvemos Manglar Tajamar (SMT), was created and within a couple of hours the number of followers grew.

Quickly, more locals from Cancun joined the initiative. By August 4, a popular complaint comprised of 4,333 individual complaints, with names, addresses and signatures was duly filed before the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA). By August 12, PROFEPA instituted an official and provisional work stoppage. The stoppage was, among other things, accredited to the lack of compliance to environmental conditions granted to FONATUR (the Federal Government’s Fund to promote Tourism), and the seller of those lots). As people were approaching the SMT volunteers to sign petitions, amongst them were many children wanting to sign. One

lawyer decided to help; as a result a Federal Trial for the Protection of Constitutional Rights (amparo lawsuit) was filed before a District Court on August 27. Signed by 113 children under legal age, the lawsuit demanded the children be allowed to pursue their right to be heard, and that their right to a healthy environment be respected. Specifically, they demanded the clearing of the mangrove in the development Malecón Tajamar to stop. Among the authorities being sued are the Mexican Environmental Ministry and of Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Federal Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (FONATUR). On November 4, the judge’s ruling granted the definitive suspension of the authorizations and permit which originally allowed for the removal of the mangrove in Malecón Tajamar. Unfortunately, the judge also ruled that a $21 million pesos bond be placed as a guarantee to the companies who bought land, in case the children lose. Objections to this requirement were filed on time and should be resolved by a higher court within the upcoming weeks. This case is important not only for Cancun, its ecosystem, its children and its future but for the country of Mexico, helping it to be more aware of the need to address environmental problems and to demand their voices to be heard, in a respectful, organized and transparent way.

Feed Captivating

BY VALENTINA JORIO Every day we make memories, and what better way to keep them than to snap a quick picture, so the memory lasts forever! Mexico is one of those destinations known for its beauty, from the turquoise waters to the magnificent golden sunsets. Here are some tips to make your Mexico memories unforgettable. Play with the colors All around you, there are colors, and that is what bring your pictures to life. Snap a quick picture of a little street with colorful houses, or little children playing. When you edit, turn up the saturation, and you’ll have an eye-captivating masterpiece! Use the rule of thirds Try to place the object you want to capture along the vertical and horizontal lines, and where they both meet (place the object to the side of your picture). The eye always focuses on the subjects that are at either left or right of a canvas.

What if… … you, or someone you love has a serious medical situation and needs to be back home within hours? If you spend any significant time in Mexico, there will come a time that you, or someone you know will need to get back home to a known medical facility, or even to a specialty hospital such as Mayo. Within hours. Would you know how to navigate international law,

the Mexican medical system, and medical evacuation companies in order to quickly get back to the States or Canada? Plus, would you be able to afford the $20,000 $50,000 cash-on-the-barrelhead payable upfront cost? And, God forbid, what if there is a death? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know that for about $500 per year you can have a wonderful sense of security and all of these worries can go away. An emergency evacuation membership can cover you, your spouse, and in

many cases children and even grandchildren. And insure that you get back home to the hospital of your choice so you can be near your loved ones and have access to specialized facilities and trusted doctors. Only one medical evac firm serving Mexico is integrated from “a to z” and in the past year has conducted over 400+ successful international evacuations to the US and Canada. Bric Spa offers a range of massages, facials and healing experiences and beauty services, and for locals - a very tempting monthly membership package.

Mexican Salamander: Fountain of Youth?! BY CATHERINE PAWELEK

O

ur never ending battle against aging is filled with $100 per ounce creams, dermabrasion, multitudes of potions and Botox. Forget Ponce de Leon’s supposed Fountain of Youth in Florida, the answer might just lie in a fascinating little creature, called axolotl, found in the waters of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. The creature’s habitat is in what has remained of an Aztec network of canals that connected different parts of the Valley of Mexico and is considered as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Aztec’s revered it calling it Quetzalcoatl’s twin brother. This amphibian can reach adulthood using an astounding ability to regenerate, called neoteny. This trait, unbelievably so, is not limited to regrowing limbs, but vital organs like the heart and parts of the brain, allowing them to live as perpetual adolescents. “Axolotls are interesting beyond regeneration because they seem to cheat aging,” said biologist Randal Voss, who leads the Salamander Genome Project at the University of Kentucky. “They retain juvenile features, such as their skin and gills, until they die.” Scientists believe that learning more about the axolotl’s is vital to the medical field by enabling scientists to regenerate tissue, limbs and spinal cord tissues. It may also lead to slowing of the aging process. Unfortunately, according to a study per-

The axolotl has the ability to regenerate organs and limbs / Photo: Reddit

formed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) the population of these salamanders is dropping. There has been a 99% decline in the population of axolotls with numbers dropping from 6,000 axolotls per square kilometer to less than one per square kilometer. Their disappearance appears to be the result of urbanization, water pollution, and drainage as well as the invasion of exotic fish like carp and tilapia. Awareness is growing among the local fishermen who are playing a crucial role in this species’ survival, by restoring the area’s flora and fauna, recovering trash from the canals and cooperating with ecologists. Even though axolotl numbers have been critically reduced to a few specimens, there’s still hope for this ancient relative of the Aztec gods. Maybe saving the Mexican salamander will allow science to develop a way to prolong human life, and to help us look less wrinkled, creased and puckered as we add decades to our current existence.

The Proposal of Alma Thai

E

astern medicine assists in relieving pain and sickness, and is a form of preventative medicine. It promotes the balance between mind, body and spirit, which are key to being not ill. An important element of Eastern medicine is the concept of life force or energy. In Yogic terms, it is referred to as prana, in Chinese it is called chi, and in Thai it is called loom. All refer to the basic principle of life force energy, which flows along specific channels. Along these channels are specific energy points that, when blocked, creates an excess of energy in one area of the body and a deficiency in another. When this happens, there is an imbalance, and we get sick. A very important aspect of Eastern medicine are the massages. Most of us know that a massage feels good and has been used since ancient times to relieve pain and promote healing. There are many different types of therapeutic massages: Thai, Shiatsu, Reflexology… which,

when used along with a treatment method, help to maintain good health. A massage is also especially good at releasing mental and emotional stress. The United States Department of Health and Human Services lists massage therapy as alternative approaches to mental health care, such as improved circulation, the release of muscle tension, mobility and flexibility, as well as stress relief. A good massage helps promote a balance of all the body’s systems, body, mind, and spirit to create the complete sense of wellbeing. In Alma Thai (32nd Street between 25th and 30th - 984 1352171), we work on physical imbalances before they develop into more serious diseases and before the toxic build up has caused damage to our internal organs. Come and enjoy a good therapeutic massage or relaxing massage in the hands of certified massage therapists.

With yoga, the challenges of the day seem far less challenging! / Photos: Take Back Your Health Conference/Flickr

Five Benefits of Practicing Yoga Yoga offers a great variety of benefits. Here are just a few to encourage you to head down to your local studio and take part Photo: Fisiowell

BY SARA JONES 1. Clear Your Mind & Enhance Your Mood

Mindfulness

S

BY ROSAN OUWERKERK

tarting your day with yoga practice allows you to really quiet your mind and focus. Often the yoga instructor will encourage you to focus on your breath, or to set an intention for your practice that can carry through to your day. My favorite is ‘gratitude’. With that in mind, challenges of the day seem far less…well, challenging!

In our daily routines, we are often in a rush, and we perform our activities on autopilot. Mindfulness is the opposite: it means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them: there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel at a given moment. By accepting the situation as it is, we create space to look at problems from a different angle.

2. Deepen Your Breathing

Breathing is at the core of all yoga practice. Yoga will help you learn to take long, slow breaths using the full capacity of your lungs, a practice that can benefit all other sport or fitness activities you may enjoy. Taking regular yoga classes can also increase lung capacity over time.

3. Strengthen Muscles

Yoga poses can sometimes be held for minutes at a time, challenging both your balance and strength. Frequent practice can lead to a profound increase in strength and agility and while it is not a cardio activity per se, yoga can certainly get your heart pumping. With increased muscle tone and regular practice, you may also notice the added benefit of losing excess weight

4. Improved Flexibility and Posture

The benefits of yoga on the flexibility of often-tight muscles are tremendous. Yoga poses stretch and tone the muscles at the same time and help align the body, which improves posture and prevents imbalances. Don’t get caught up with what others in the class are doing, it doesn’t matter if you can’t get your head to your shin, only that you perform the movement safely and to the best of your ability. Yoga will train your body to hold your core strong, open your chest and slide your shoul-

der blades back and down. Counteract those hours of driving or sitting at a desk!

5. Prevent Injuries

Improving balance, coordination, flexibility and strength are all key to preventing injuries that can leave you out of action. Increased range of motion in the joints and stronger tendons, ligaments and connective tissues mean less risk of strains and sprains. Yoga is suitable for all fitness levels. Talk to your instructor about the best style of class for you and any concerns or injuries you may have. Sara Jones is a Spa, Wellness & Lifestyle Expert and Founder of Spa Professional Mexico magazine, www.spaprofessionalmexico.com

Mindfulness is especially good for those who continue to worry about the past or the future. People can be so preoccupied that they forget to live in the present. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we are sensing in the present moment rather than ruminating the past or imagining the future. By training the process of mindfulness, you live more intense, and you can also relax easier. In this article, I will give three simple mindfulness exercises that will easily fit in your daily life. 1. Be mindful in what you are doing. Choose a basic uncluttered activity, like cutting vegetables or walking to work. All your focus must go to this simple task. Keep your attention on the task until it is finished, so without allowing intrusive thoughts and judgments. If your mind wanders off, be aware of it and bring your attention back to your job.

2. Feel your body. If, for example, you walk into the supermarket, or if you plop on the couch, then once feel your body from the inside out: feel your breathing, your pulse, your feet on the ground. Feel your legs, back, belly, arms. Focus on how your body feels and what it looks like. Realize once what your body does for you, without you ever asking a favor in return. 3. Try to do things with more patience. Break the habit of doing everything in a hurry in order to do more in one day; snap out of the idea that fast is good, slow is bad. Speed deprives you of the opportunity to experience what you are doing. And in that very real experience lies relaxation! Therefore, do something with patience today. Whether brushing your teeth or getting a coffee: take it slow and conscious of your activity. Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can bring a variety of social, psychical and psychological benefits. For example, mindfulness can reduce the risk of a relapse of depression and can make anxiety more manageable. vant de rencontrer la Dr.Moreau, je me suis demandée ce qu’était la Chiropraxie. Toxic Pole Fitness, M’a Raison d’Être! Originaire de Cardenas, Tabasco, après l’université, elle a décidé de tenter sa chance à Playa. Soledad Rodriguez Perez : Je travaillais dans un hôtel. Quotidiennement, j’avais besoin de décharger l’adrénaline. Aucun sport ne me satisfaisait.

More Financial Uncertainty in 2016 BY PATTIE BERRY

I

t is December and everyone, almost everywhere, is in a holiday mood. We should enjoy the holiday cheer because our everyday world is nowhere near a festive mood. 2015 has been an exciting year, full of surprises, but it hasn’t been a happy year. The problems that have plagued most countries for the last several years will continue in 2016. Economies, developed or emerging, are struggling to grow, with no guarantees that central banks’ efforts to stimulate activity will bear fruit. The original bond-buying program implemented by the European Central Bank wasn’t enough, and the enhanced version is just getting underway, so we don’t know yet if the economy’s sluggishness will persist. China’s economic weakness has been

an unfortunate surprise that doesn’t seem to end. Even in the U.S., the best of the lot, the outlook is hardly rosy: the Fed is about to embark on a new rising interest rate cycle while the economy is barely growing 2.5%, and we don’t know how resilient it is. The European Union is no longer a given. Russia seems to mean business regarding Ukraine, openly challenging the Western world. OPEC is also standing up to the US, Russia and other oil producers, willing to let the price tumble to unthinkable lows to defend its market share. South Korea has been suspiciously quiet lately. And terrorism, through ISIS, seems to be spreading from the Middle East to the rest of the planet, putting everything at risk and making everyone feel threatened. Financial markets, in the meantime, don’t really know what to make

of this mélange. The dollar has lost some of its strength, while the euro has lost some of its weakness. Bond yields have fallen again in the US, and backed up in Europe. Commodities don’t believe anything and can’t seem to stop falling; and stock markets fluctuate without much conviction. Furthermore, this confusing and

unstable situation is unlikely to go away anytime soon. Next year will probably be even more exciting because a Fed’s rate hike will be in play at every meeting, but it means another variable will be introduced to make things even more complex. Since 2016 promises to be similar to 2015, and maybe even me difficult,

we believe it is wise to set investment portfolios for safety and forget about them for a few days, while we enjoy this happy season. At Intercam, we are interested in receiving your feedback on our articles. Contact us at ftfernandez@intercam.com.mx

Obtaining Temporary Residency in Mexico

- Part 2 BY MEXLAW MIGRATION SERVICES

I

n the last edition, we provided you with an overview of the process to get your temporary residency in Mexico. In this edition, we finish with some additional information about applicants and their families, as well as the financial solvency requirements. Temporary Residents can apply for the entry of the following related family members: • Their children and those of their spouse provided they are under age and not married, or under their custody or guardianship. • Spouse. • Common Law Relationship, by proving their relationship under Mexican law. • Mother and father. These family members will be allowed to stay legally in the country under the same conditions as the temporary resident, with the possibility of obtaining a permit to work in exchange for remuneration and with the right to enter and leave the country as many times as they wish. As we stated in the previous article, the law requires you to be in your home country to apply and have an interview at the Mexican Consulate there, before returning to Mexico. There are two exceptions to the rule: if you are in Mexico for humanitarian reasons or you have close family in Mexico (spouse or children). One of the criteria that the Mexican authorities require for a Temporary Residency Visa is that the applicants prove that they have sufficient funds to sustain themselves while in Mexico or a steady income. The requirements, according to the Con-

sular Section of the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C. website you must prove financial solvency with any of the following documents: • An original and copy of investments or bank accounts with a balance of at least $25,890 during the last 12 months prior to the visa application. • An original and copy of documents showing that the applicant has a pension or monthly income of $1560 USD (tax-free) during the six months prior to the visa application. Other ways to qualify for Temporary Residency: • Owning real estate property with a value in excess of $ 195,000 USD. · Participating/Owning at least a value of $100,000.00 USD shares in a Mexican company • Owning over $100,000.00 USD of heavy equipment or machinery in Mexico. • Operating a business in Mexico and that legally creates at least five jobs for Mexicans. (Note that these values may change slightly at the different Mexican Consulates). To ensure a speedy and trouble free process, it is recommended to use a professional law firm, such as Mexlaw, throughout your application.

Name: Red Morris Where are you from? I am originally from Los Angeles, California. Playa del Carmen is a big jump from LA. How did you find your way to Mexico? Well, after working in the very challenging and life-consuming entertainment business for nearly 20 years, and after a near life-ending illness in 2008-2010, my wife and I felt it was time for a change. Life was too short, and we had a lot of life still to live. We have always loved the Caribbean, and we decided that somewhere in this beautiful and tropical region was going to be the location of our new life together. You are now Media and Marketing Administrator for Top Mexico Real Estate, are there any similarities to your previous work in television and movies? Absolutely. Has Playa been a good place for you to work? Truly, I could not have been luckier beginning my work life here in the Riviera Maya with anyone other than Top Mexico Real Estate & Marketing. Thomas Lloyd and Bea Lozano (the owners), recognize the power of marketing, crafting a message and exploring the “crazy ideas” that truly reach and touch the American, Canadian and Mexican real estate target markets. They have allowed me, and even encouraged, the freedom to create a platform of expression to help build the Top Mexico brand not only into the real estate juggernaut it already is but a marketing firm worthy of notice and recognition in the marketplace. For that, I will always be eternally grateful and loyal What do you like best about living and working here? Well, I think that the best compliment I can give to this wonderful and tropical place, a place that has so graciously welcomed and accepted us crazy “gringos” is I don’t miss the United States ONE BIT. I wouldn’t trade living here for anything, anywhere, anytime. For our full interview with Red Scott, please visit our website www.theplayatimes.com.

The whole theme of BPM is the champion of the underground, that’s what people cherish. It was never about big theatrical events, pyrotechnics, stuff like that. It’s focused more about the music, and the social circle. I always get asked the question “Is Vegas the new Ibiza?”, well really no, Playa del Carmen is almost Ibiza to an American audience. There’s a bit of everything over here, minimal, house, deep house, techno, it’s what you like, and they’re catering to all kinds of music. It’s got the sunshine, great people coming from all over and just enjoying themselves listening to great music. So it’s fantastic. Nicole Moudaber

B Y J OE M ALDONADO rom January 8 to 17, Playa del Carmen will host the ninth edition of the BPM, one of the top ten electronic music festivals in the world. But, to talk of BPM is not just to talk about techno, house, electro, and breakbeat. BPM is also a festival with social and environmental awareness, with a variety of organized activities that take place throughout the year to make their mark, not just to promote the music but to serve Playa, the host of the festival for the last nine years. According to María Azanza, in charge of public relations for the event, “BPM is the first festival in Mexico with a cleaning and recycling program; from now on, other festivals will begin to copy us by setting environmental and social practices.” Over 375 artists will perform day and night, attracting at least 60 thousand people. Every year, the festival adapts to keep it innovative and new for everyone. The latest change was to spread the festival across different venues so that artists can perform with different backdrops and on different stages to keep the festival flowing throughout the city. The artists who are performing in January 2016, include Dubfire, Boris, Mano Le Tough, Richy Ahmed, Oliver Huntema nn, Heidi, Miss Kittin, among others. The venues for BPM during the

In the evening, gigs and parties will take place at Blue Parrot, Jungle, La Santanera, Salsanera, and Tribeca. BPM comes together every year thanks to the participation of all these talents, but also thanks to the participation of hundreds of volunteers, who, this year have supported the social work of BPM, such as going out to trash picking, donating goods in money and in kind to local organizations. For María Azanza, the participation of other organizations such as Solidaridad’s DIF program (the National System for Integral Family Development), as beneficiaries of the aid and donations from BPM and the volunteers. When we speak of BPM, it is clear that not only is it a festival of music and partying, but thanks to social and environmental actions, the festival has been able to influence young people to do something for their community. Volunteers who work and support the festival’s altruistic endeavors receive an event kit and a free pass to the party of their choice. “BPM has grown as a result of the number of artists, the number of attendees, but also by the number of activities for the benefit of the community,” said María Azanza. In fact, for 2016, they are determined to keep this commitment to society to put on one of the biggest parties in the world, with a social message.

T

he margay is a small jungle cat, similar to an ocelot. The margay is only 13 to 20 inches high, can range from 48 to 80 inches long, not including the tail and weighing between 5.7 and 8.8 pounds. Reports vary in the weight and size of a margay but most reports confirm they are not much bigger than a large house cat. They have a shorter head and larger eyes than the ocelot. Their beautiful fur puts them at risk of extinction, as they were one of the most exploited cats in the fur business until a trade restriction on the pelts in the 80s. The fur is brown with darker brown and, or black rosettes; their underbelly is a pale color of beige or white. The tail is very long and heavy for their size and has dark bands with a black tip; it is a useful tool for balancing on in the tree tops. This cat is very elusive and spends much of its time in the treetops of the rainforest; they have adjusted to life in the tree canopies as they are very agile. Their back feet can swivel 180 degrees at the ankle, and they can hang from a branch by one leg. Similar to small rodents they

have developed the ability to run down a tree headfirst, most other cats will back down a tree. Hunting in the treetops provides all the prey they need without the added competition of the big cats and other predators on the ground Mating also takes place up in the trees, the female will normally give birth to only one kitten, this only occurs once a year. The kittens have a 50 percent mortality rate, and margays are very difficult to breed in captivity. This only adds to their population decrease. In captivity, they have been known to live up to 24 years. The margay is a nocturnal cat that comes out at nightfall to hunt. Their diet consists of insects, birds, frogs, monkeys, fruit and greenery from the treetops. They are a solitary animal with a large territory claimed by each individual, marking their territory by spraying, urine and scratchings. These cats only spend time together for mating. Margay can be found in the rainforest from Mexico to Argentina, although there are not many in existence. They remain on the near threatened list. Despite being protected, they suffer from illegal hunting and loss of habitat due to deforestation.

FAQS

Toxoplasmosis is an infection resulting from a parasite found in an infected cat’s feces, undercooked meat that had been infected, and contaminated fruits and vegetables. The infection can be dangerous to the unborn child, it has been known to cause blindness and developmental issues, but if you are pregnant, you can avoid being infected by following some basic hygiene practices. Have someone else clean the litter box, if that is not an option, wear disposable gloves and wash with soap and hot water. The parasite becomes infectious a couple days later, so if you clean the litter box daily you will avoid infection. Do not feed your cat raw meat, only use commercial foods Do not drink untreated water Keep your cat in the house If you work in the garden, wear gloves and always wash with soap and hot water Eat only well done meat, avoid cured meats, wash and peel vegetables Practice food safe handling The symptoms are sometimes hard to recognize as they resemble flu like symptoms, such as aching muscles, swollen lymph glands. All precautions we should be taking in everyday life will keep your unborn child safe from toxoplasmosis. There are blood tests to detect toxoplasmosis and antibiotics may be prescribed to help prevent the infection being passed to the unborn child. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, you have the option to be tested for toxoplasmosis, if you test positive there is less chance that it can be passed to an unborn child as your immune system has already dealt with the infection, if you test negative you will need to take precautions to avoid infection. This virus is much more common in warm, humid areas and in countries such as France, possibly because of a preference of dining on undercooked or raw meat. If you are pregnant, there is no need

It is unlikely that your cat will give you toxoplasmosis. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “people are more likely to get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or from gardening.” If your cat has toxoplasma once, it does not mean she will always have it, the virus is shed away in the feces for a few weeks after being infected with the parasite. It is not necessary to treat your cat for the infection as it clears up on its own. Toxoplasma cannot be absorbed through your skin, only through accidental ingestion. Mature cats are less likely to carry the parasite.

to get rid of the cats you already have in your family, but the CDC doesn’t recommend adopting a new cat or kitten until after your baby is born. For additional information, we encourage you to visit the CDC’s Parasitic Disease Information site dedicated to Toxoplasmosis at www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis.
