ABOUT US Isn’t January a miserable month? (sorry to all those with birthdays!) It’s cold and dark and usually rainy. There’s a whole year until it’s Christmas again, and there’s nothing fun happening. Well, this year you can escape the winter blues at The Place with a whole season filled with great shows. To commiserate January being the post-festive period we’ve made all our events available with friends’ discounts. That means if you’ve become a Friend of The Place you can get discount on ticket prices for all 9 shows in January, as well as loads more through the rest of the season. For more info on joining see the details on page 5 of this brochure. Mental Health Programme 2018 sees the start of an ongoing strand of shows exploring Mental Health, and covering a wide variety of areas including depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD. The programme as a whole is designed to help reduce the stigma that surrounds Mental Health and its impact on people’s day to day experiences. The Place are proud to provide a space for open and frank discussion and a variety of wraparound activities aimed at opening up the venue to people with lived experience of Mental Health, carers and members of the public. We have plans for a series of events including Q&A sessions, panel discussions, drop-in coffee mornings, etc. This season of work is presented in partnership with Mind BLMK, Bedfordshire and Luton NHS Mental Health services provided by ELFT, and other local organisations. Check out our website for further details of additional activities as they are confirmed.

LGBTQ+ Month Programme To celebrate February’s LGBTQ+ history month The Place present a short series of films and live events. This is part of our ongoing drive to increase representation and visibility for LGBTQ+ people at the venue, making Bedford and The Place safe environments for all LGBTQ+ people. We’re looking for more work and opportunities to develop this area over 2018, so if you have an idea, or know someone who may be interested in helping us, please get in contact with the team.

ABOUT US Fantastic For Families At The Place it’s really important to us that we make sure the venue is open and welcoming to as many people from our community as possible, as well instilling the magic of live theatre in the next generation of audiences, theatre-goers and hopefully theatre-makers! Programming work for children and families is a core part of our vision for the venue, as can be seen in over the spring season, with shows suitable for families and young people of all ages. We are very happy to display the Fantastic for Families accreditation at the venue as part of the Family Arts Standards: “All event organisers that are signed up to the Family Arts Standards, whether they’re a theatre, an artist, an orchestra or a dance company, will provide some activities that all family members can enjoy together. They are welcoming to families, with helpful staff, good facilities and considered pricing. They give clear information to help families decide what is or isn’t suitable for them and their children.” We think we fit that mould and we’re committed to doing even more to improve the experience for all going forwards. Look out for our new sensory tours for children with anxiety, autism or other complex needs, too.

DramasInPyjamas Part of our ‘Fantastic For Families’ drive is our new initiative ‘DramasInPyjamas’. Some of our best children’s shows have early evening performances, and it can be a worry sometimes if you know your children are going to have a late night...so, why not come to see a show in your pyjamas so all your children have to do when they get home is pop straight to bed? You’ll also be super-comfy, and it adds a bit of extra special sparkle to a theatre experience. Not only can you attend these shows in your pyjamas, but thanks to a very generous grant from Community Dental Services UK’s CDS Action we can provide all children attending with free toothbrushes and free toothpaste, and everything you need to clean your toothie-pegs at the theatre - making getting home and into bed even easier! We’re building on our reputation for being friendly and cosy, and inviting families to treat ‘Our Place as Your Place.’

JANUARY A Film by Jacques Tati

PLAYTIME (1967) FILM THURSDAY 18TH JANUARY 7:00PM

£5

(U) UNIVERSAL

Playtime is a hilarious and gloriously choreographed cinematic masterpiece about the modern city and the confusion it creates. Following an American tourist and befuddled Frenchman (Monsieur Hulot) as they attempt to negotiate a bafflingly modern Paris, with highly comic results, turning a critical eye on commercialism, entertainment, mass media, tourism, and modernist architecture as they go. Crammed with visual gags and an unconventional use of sound, Playtime is a lasting testament to a modern era tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion. Presented in French with English subtitles. Running time: 124 minutes

Described as Downton Abbey with gardening tips, Old Herbaceous is the humorous love story of a single-minded yet gentle man with a passion for plants, and is a charming one man play which has entranced audiences around the country. An acute and sometimes hilarious observation of relationships between the classes in a simpler age, Old Herbaceous is sprinkled with witticisms and epithets. The evening blossoms into tender humour, much in the traditionally understated English style of the early 20th century. “Downton Abbey with gardening tips” The Guardian

Flattered and entranced by this enigmatic presence, he is seduced into revealing himself. As he seeks to justify his life he ultimately only succeeds in damning himself. Developed under close guidance and support from the Holocaust Educational Trust, this stylised production, inspired by author and historian Philip Wareham’s novel, ‘Right to Live’, is scripted and performed by veteran performer Tim Marriott (BBC TV The Brittas Empire) supported by Emma Zadow as Azra and presented in cinematic style. 7:30PM

FULL £10 / CONCESSIONS £8.50

10+

At the age of twenty, Verity Taylor was charged by the police for damaging a chair by fire in the psychiatric hospital where she was a patient. Later she was committed to Broadmoor from where she may not be discharged or transferred elsewhere without permission of the Home Secretary. This disturbing play about mental health and difference is based on indepth interviews with the family of a real-life Verity. These interviews and access to Verity’s own writing took place while Verity remained locked up in Rampton Secure Hospital. Written by Olwen Wymark in 1977, Find Me was a searing indictment of the provision for juvenile mental health at that time and is often considered a historical drama. However, given the current difficulties being experienced by the carers of children and young people trying to access professional help, it feels an appropriate time to revisit this powerful piece of theatre.

On the outskirts of a small Wiltshire town, in Rooster’s Wood, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron and his motley band of misfits maintain a tenuous grasp on his caravan and the patch of land it sits on. The council, the police and most of the locals all want rid of him. On the morning of the local fair, the powers that be move ever closer to pushing Byron out of his eponymous wood. At the same time a young girl goes missing and many fingers point at Rooster. First produced in 2009 at the Royal Court Theatre, starring Mark Rylance as Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron, ‘Jerusalem’ is magical, earthy, outlandish and hilarious. Jez Butterworth’s England is the country we recognise, scruffed up against that dreamy, idealised place of popular imagination, that scepter’d, green and pleasant land, stewed with an island that is squat and gristly and fierce. A theatrical tour-de-force not to be missed.

MARCH Director: Elio Petri

INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN BEYOND SUSPICION (1970) FILM THURSDAY 15TH MARCH

7:00PM

£5

18+

Marxist neo-realistic filmmaker Elio Petri surpassed himself with this devious and playful thriller about a powerful chief homicide investigator who murders his mistress, confident that no one will suspect him. It’s like the best episode of Columbo you ever saw but in Italian with beautiful women, fantastic clothes, mad decor and that bloke from the spaghetti westerns. Both a compelling character study and a disturbing commentary on the draconian government crackdowns in Italy in the late 1960s and early 70s, this sly and slick condemnation of the state and the police is perhaps the finest work from one of Italy’s most political filmmakers. Visually stunning and beautifully composed, Petri’s kinetic portrait of surreal bureaucracy plays out as a perversely pleasurable rendering of controlled chaos. Presented in Italian with English subtitles. Running time: 112 minutes

GREAT EXPECTATIONS TOURING & PROFESSIONAL THEATRE FRIDAY 16TH MARCH

FULL £12 / CONCESSIONS £10

Deft, daft, delightful... and definitely Dickens! Christmas Eve, 1803. Pip, a seven year-old orphan boy, visits his mother’s grave. A frightening encounter with an escaped convict begins a series of events that will change his life forever. Written by one of England’s greatest authors, Charles Dickens, Great Expectations is the profound and complex story of Pip’s journey through life. Some of his most memorable characters the terrifying Magwitch; Joe Gargery, the kind and generous blacksmith; the eccentric Miss Havisham; the cold and beautiful Estella; Mr Jaggers the pompous lawyer and Pip’s wise friend, Herbert Pocket are vividly brought to life in this anarchic and joyful telling of this glorious tale. Using Dickens’ original text (well, mostly!) David Mynne takes you on a journey that brings you a cast of thousands in a skilful, one-man adaptation of this epic story. Be prepared to be scared and amazed and cry and laugh ...a lot! Written by Charles Dickens and adapted by Andrew McPherson. 20

Following its sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival 2016, and originating from Battersea Arts Centre, house are delighted to be touring critically acclaimed ‘Growing Pains’ from Tom Gill. “He’s got a knife, and he’s not afraid to use it. How did this likeable, working-class young Northerner end up poised and ready to stab someone, staring into the red of their eyes?” Combining quick-witted lyricism with original songs, Tom Gill’s genre-bending and unflinching drama takes us on a poetic journey from heartache to redemption against the backdrop of Ladbrokes, broke lads and sh#t dads. Without question, Tom Gill is one of the most edgy and vital voices on the Spoken Word scene today and is currently involved in a new film from Mike Leigh.

LADY MAISERY MUSIC WEDNESDAY 28TH MARCH

8PM

ALL TICKETS £15

ALL AGES

In an English folk scene presently bursting with bold and innovative music, vocal trio Lady Maisery shines brightly. With their distinctive harmony singing sometimes lush and rich, sometimes dark and invigorating - and their thoughtful arrangements of both traditional and original songs - Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans have earned a thoroughly justified reputation. Whether unearthing the feminist twist hidden in an old folk song, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad, demonstrating multi-instrumental talents on accordion, harp, concertina, fiddle, banjo and more, or reviving the lost art (in England) of mouth music or diddling, they are supremely skilful explorers of the power, beauty and vitality of folk song. “Some of the most exquisite, thrilling vocal harmony work in the English folk scene an impressive blend of ease and sophistication” The Guardian

SAD LITTLE MAN TOURING & PROFESSIONAL THEATRE THURSDAY 5TH APRIL

7:30PM

FULL £12 / CONCESSIONS £10

14+

An autobiographical piece, written by Pub Corner Poets’ Resident Playwright Josh Overton, Sad Little Man explores how we begin to deal with grief in the immediate response to tragedy. We meet Lee in a bathroom, though it’s raining inside, and the only way he can talk about what he’s thinking is through a stand-up comedian’s microphone. Emily doesn’t speak, she doesn’t want to. She wants to swim and dance and make his life hard. She wants to get drunk and sit on his shoulders. She wants to f##k him harder than he hates himself. A combination of performance poetry, physical theatre, pounding music and projection tell the story of the many lives of Lee and someone he loves. A ‘stand-up tragedy’ set performed by the mind of a young man in shock. “Hypnotic - beautifully executed, perfectly captured - visceral.” The Sunday Times

FULL £10 / CONCESSIONS £8.50

This is the remarkable story of Jayaben Desai, the inspirational leader of the 1976-78 Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike. Jayaben brought the issue of workplace exploitation and racism to the fore, challenged the perception of Asian women being inherently passive and docile, whilst having the measure of the most brutish and charmless of her managers, telling them: “What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. But in a zoo there are many types of animals. Some are monkeys who dance on your fingertips, others are lions who can bite your head off. We are the lions, Mr. Manager!” This is social history presented in Townsend Productions’ imaginative, engaging style with songs and music of the 1970’s. Written by Neil Gore and developed at The Place by its resident professional company, the play returns to The Place at the end of a national tour. “A Company making a name for delivering vivid, politically committed theatre.” The Observer
