PREECLAMPSIA The pathogenesis of preeclampsia involves events early in pregnancy that lead to abnormal placenta development and failed spiral artery remodeling. Placental dysfunction follows resulting in a variety of cytokines, proteins and other molecules being released into the maternal blood. These factors interact with maternal organ systems causing dysfunction and damage in later pregnancy.
