Peninsula Moves Forward With Key Infrastructure Projects Placencia Municipal Pier and Plaza Another ambitious project on the Peninsula broke ground on January 26 at the old pier near the historic Placencia Fisherman’s Cooperative. The planned “Placencia Municipal Pier and Plaza” is a result of the partnership between the Government of Belize, Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). It features a 275 foot hurricane resistant concrete pier to replace the smaller structure destroyed by Hurricane Iris in 2001. The facility will cater to both the fishing and tourism industries and is expected to revitalize the naturally picturesque southern point of the peninsula in Placencia Village. Also included is a waterfront plaza at the base of the pier with public bathrooms, seating and attractive lighting as well as improvements to the sidewalk that extends north from the plaza.

Contributed by PCSD Conservation enthusiasts gathered at the Mexican Institute in Belize City to witness the Belize Audubon Society’s presentation of the 26th James A. Waight Conservation Award to Adrian Vernon, program director of Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development. The highly prestigious award is given to deserving individuals or organizations in recognition of positive work in the protection and enhancement of Belize's environment. The award’s namesake, James A. Waight (1907 1999), was the first president of the Belize Audubon Society who developed a love for nature and wildlife while working as Surveyor General of Belize. The award is presented on his birthday February 16. Since its establishment in 1987, the award has been presented to many dedicated environmentalists including Julian Cho for his work as a social justice and conservation leader in the Mayan community, Gregory Smith for his work in marine turtle conservation, and the Sibun Watershed Association for their work in protecting the Sibun River. And now, Placencia’s very own Adrian Vernon joins the ranks of these notable Belizean environmental heroes. (Please see ADRIAN VERNON, page 9.)

Welcome A Letter From the Editor February has been a very busy month for businesses on the Peninsula and also here at the Placencia BTIA’s office at the Placencia Tourism Center. This issue we’ve done things a little differently preparing a review of all that this month had in store for us. And of course, the 9th Annual Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival was the major highlight. Please see our special Sidewalk Arts Festival centerfold photo essay on pages 16 and 17, as well as our report of the first ever Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest on page 23. We’d like to thank all the generous donors and volunteers who made this event possible and especially our energetic and visionary organizer, Aline Habib. Much hard work and preparation goes into the successful execution of an event like this and all other events that the Placencia Chapter of the

Monkey River Tour: Do Not Miss It! “C”

Word By Stewart Krohn PBTIA Chairman, stewart@cocoplumbelize.net Crime. Like the great white shark in “Jaws”, it’s a word that no one in the tourism business anywhere ever wants to utter in public. But crime— like rainy days, sand flies and the occasional power failure—is something that both tourists and the tourism industry must confront. Fortunately, unlike the weather, there are things we can do about it. First, let’s get a few things straight: 1) Crime is not a huge problem in Placencia and in fact is much less prevalent than most other destinations in Belize. Violent crimes here are rare and the most common incidents are petty burglaries of homes or hotel rooms. From where I sit, however, even one crime is one crime too many. 2) Our concern about crime--as the local chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association— is not just about a tourist losing a cell phone or IPad. Whether a crime is committed against a visitor or local resident it is of equal concern. The average burglar does not care if the laptop he steals belongs to Peter from Peoria or Paul from Placencia. Likewise, when we seek to curtail it is to protect ALL our residents, temporary or permanent. 3) As a community whose prosperity is largely dependent on tourism, however, we must be especially concerned about how crime affects our visitors. It is not enough to secure our own premises and think that we have dealt once and for all with the issue. We must understand that if our visitors do not feel safe in our community and if Placencia ever gets a reputation as a less than safe destination, then all of us suffer, not just from a relatively small direct material loss but from a long term loss of income that would result from a decline in the number and quality of visitors to the Peninsula. So what do we—as both tourists and locals who depend on the tourism business-- do about crime? In the first place we who live here can’t ignore it when we see it. Although a certain portion of the crime on the peninsula is committed by outsiders (who ironically are facilitated by our nice new road) most is the work of our own people. So when you smile up with the known thief, give a ride to your friendly neighborhood crack head or ignore the village drunk who harasses unsuspecting visitors…are you really helping to fight crime?

On Saturday morning, February 5, Apolo and I (Please see MONKEY RIVER TOUR, page 5.) joined the rest of our tour group at the dock by the Placencia Lagoon in front of the small Texaco gas station where we met our guide, Bret Young – a proud Monkey River native. It was a cool, partially cloudy day, which made for a pleasant one-hour boat ride to the mouth of the Monkey River where we were welcomed by a fishing boat harbor of the idyllic village located in north Toledo. Within only a matter of 20 minutes cruising down the river in Bret’s skiff, we were given a brief yet compelling history of the village by our knowledgeable guide, saw a turtle about the size of a big coconut on the bank of the river, an osprey hawk beautifully perched on top of a sprawling dead tree and a blue heron standing gracefully on its yellow feet on top of a sandbar. And, just as we were passing the stretches of seaside maho, which functions similarly to mangroves in the lagoons, Bret pointed us towards a baby Morelet’s crocodile trying to hide out near driftwood and floating leaves. We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful introduction to Monkey River! The landscape lining the watercourse is breathtaking, and the striking greens of the jungle contrasts so spectacularly against the tall gold pampas

I pulled a rookie error and neglected to take some with me, but as is the usual scenario in this area, a kind traveler let me have a few sprays. Also … wearing hiking shoes instead of flip flops in the jungle is a smart idea too, especially after a few rainy days. Now, back to that faint roar. What perked our ears earlier was a howler monkey, and Bret told us these creatures could be heard from as far as three miles away! But, we knew another one was close by especially after finding fresh monkey dung on the jungle floor. Our group made fun discoveries throughout our inland tour. I found out that the leaves of the breadfruit tree function like Velcro and sticks right on to your shirt. I also learned that termites taste surprisingly minty and make a real good jungle snack. Then there he was. ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAR!!!! The black howler monkey with the most human-like face was right above us climbing on a tree branch and stayed there just long enough for some fantastic photographs. We didn’t think our trip could get any better after that moment, but we were wrong. Bret took us for lunch at his Aunt Ilna’s restaurant near the mouth of the river where I had some of the best stew beans and rice of my life along with delicious fried snook. We were very happy, returned to the boat and headed back to the Peninsula just to catch one big manatee rise to the surface of the Placencia Sea for deep breaths of fresh, salty air. ▪

Multi-Purpose Building in Seine Bight and Peninsula Road Seine Bight Village is now home to a multi-purpose building that is the “envy of other villages and even some municipalities,” said Minister of Works, Hon. Anthony “Boots” Martinez. Martinez, who was one of several dignitaries present at the inauguration of the new community center and Peninsula Road on February 16. The two-story concrete structure features a large auditorium, conference room, library, kitchen and offices for the Seine Bight Village Council and Water Board. The BTB has strengthened the TPU from three to five officers and has posted Police Constable Yadira Jones as the officer in charge. Constable Jones transferred from the San Pedro Tourism Police Office where she worked for six years and dealt with a wide range of cases affecting both residents and tourists. The Placencia Tourism Police Unit was previously based inside the Placencia Police Station. The new Tourism Police Office will “better accommodate tourists and be more effective and efficient. Adrian Vernon: Local conservation leader wins Belize Audubon Society award Continued from Page One. Adrian Vernon was born in Placencia Village on January 30, 1981. He is the baby of a family of nine sisters and brothers, three half sisters and brothers, four cousins and an adopted sister. As a young child, he developed an appreciation for mangroves and his natural environment from his father, Mr. Arthur Vernon, Sr. – an avid hunter/gatherer and outdoorsman. He spent time in the mazes formed by the roots of mangroves, and played with frogs, snakes, seahorses and baby crocodiles – some of which he would bring home as “presents” for his ever-patient, and luckily, non-squeamish, mother, Mrs. Cherry Vernon. As Adrian grew and up and went to school, first at St. John’s Anglican Primary School, then later at Independence High School, where he majored in business management and accounting, he brought to his studies his love of the outdoors and his communication skills, becoming active in drama, sports and community activities. While in high school, Adrian founded the first youth environmental club in Placencia – YACK, the Young Adventurer’s Conservation Klub. He was also high school student body president for three years, class president for four years, and a prefect for three years. In his spare time, he hosted most high school events as the master of ceremonies, and obtained an associates degree in small business management through the International Correspondence Schools in 1999 – just one year after he graduated from high school. He then attended Bible school from 1999-2000.

Adrian worked with many experts on conservation and environmental sciences with whom he furthered his academic and hands-on knowledge of seagrasses, mangroves, water quality issues, estuarine and marine life such as manatees, rays and fin fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, insects and algae, coastal shore dynamics and many other issues related to Belize’s natural environment. Adrian planted mangroves, replanted mangroves, captured, tagged and tracked manatees, conducted water sampling, waded in mud and mosquitoes and the heat to gather seagrass samples. Adrian now uses that knowledge and experience both professionally and to help local communities in wisely managing their natural resources. Adrian is the author of two books, Everything Mangrove, a general mangrove information resource, as well as a restoration and planting guide for red mangroves, and Mangrove Beautiful, which seeks to help people see the beauty of mangroves and to use them to add beauty to their own lives and properties. He works with developers and homeowners to restore ecological balance to their properties by retaining or replanting native vegetation, with shrimp farms on mitigating waste and with local governments in assessing environmental impacts of community projects and proposed developments. He has also worked at a consultant for the
World Wildlife Fund on community mangrove restoration and climate change, is currently on the Executive Board of the Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage as the representative for Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development, a member of the international Ecological Restoration Society, and a board member of the Placencia Humane Society. Adrian now holds the position of full-time program coordinator for Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development, a community based grassroots conservation organization, where he is working to establish a tour guide training program for Placencia Lagoon tours, writing a book about the native plants of the Placencia Peninsula, contributing to PCSD’s quarterly newspaper, Roots and Reef, and working with property owners to determine the cause and how to control the erosion that is plaguing many of the area’s beaches. Adrian Vernon is also fully dedicated to assisting the Placencia and Seine Bight Village Councils and local community organizations in establishing a Placencia Lagoon reserve to protect the critical Lagoon habitats that provide, food, shelter, recreation and a livelihood for so many.

After completing his studies, Adrian worked for small businesses in Placencia, including David Vernon’s guide service, Toadal Adventures, where he was able to not only use his business and accounting skills in the running of the business, but was also able to conduct kayaking tours of the Placencia Lagoon and its mangrove habitat. Adrian developed a yearning for more knowledge of the mangrove system during these tours and began to study with David. These studies were briefly interrupted during Hurricane Iris in 2001 when Adrian’s attention diverted to recovery – of his home, his family and his community. As part of his efforts to help his community recover from Iris, Adrian began volunteering at his old primary school, St. John’s, where classes were often held outdoors because the school building had been almost completely destroyed. Through his volunteer work, Adrian discovered that he had a special skill in dealing with youth and teaching them about the natural environment. The experience led him to accept a volunteer position in 2003 with Friends of Nature

Grateful Dead Drummer Plays at De Viners with Emmeth Young and Talla Walla De Viners Lounge Bar had a spectacular start to 2012 when the world famous Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joined the ever-popular Emmeth Young and friends on stage in January. What ensued was a truly unforgettable, rip-roaring, jam session. Live fusions of local and international rhythms, as well as regular live music shows in general, is quickly making the Placencia Peninsula a leader in Belize’s diverse music scene and attracting musicians from all over. This was not Kreutzmann’s first visit to the Peninsula, and he is expected to return soon▪

January Correction: New Attitude Fashion Show In the January issue of the Placencia Breeze, our report on the New Attitude Fashion Show titled: “New Attitude Fashion Show Brought Unique and Trendy Styles to the Peninsula,” we stated that Veda Sanchez is from Corozal when she is from Orange Walk, and that Joris Hendrik is from Belmopan instead of San Ignacio. Turtle Inn Builds New Barbecue Grill at the Silk Cayes The popular barbecue grill stationed at one of the islands in the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve where guides usually cook up a delicious lunch for famished snorkelers, was in dire need of repair. For many tour operators, it was an unwelcomed eyesore on the island. Taking the opportunity to fix a controllable problem in the environment, Turtle Inn Resort stepped up to the plate to construct a brand new concrete grill. “We already had the supplies lying around,” said Turtle Inn General Manager Martin Krediet. “We might not be able to control plastic in the sea or the floating sea weed, but at least we can do something to make the island look nicer,” added Krediet.

Nellie Catzim, executive director of the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) who manages the Silk Cayes, said Turtle Inn has been a committed supporter of their organization and has made a number of contributions. “This is just one of the more tangible ones that people can see,” said Catzim. “They came to us and were willing to offer their help, and of course, we welcomed that.” Krediet explained that this recent gift to SEA and the Silk Cayes falls in line with Turtle Inn and Coppola Resorts’ commitment and dedication to fostering best practices in ecotourism and sustainable travel. ▪

Placencia Moorings Masters (PMM) Continue to Protect the Reef With the Help of Generous Donors By Marion Carr PMM Project Coordinator, muzamanzie@gmail.com Since its inception six years ago, the Placencia Mooring Masters (PMM) buoy project, which works to protect reef and sea grass beds from anchor damage, is trudging along. Like with most non-profits, the economic downturn has reduced grant funding opportunities. Adding to the challenge of grant seeking, available funding is mostly designated for Protected Marine Areas (PMA) or education/research. Luckily, many people who value our mission have helped us to continue the struggle to save Belize’s reef. At the start of 2011, PMM desperately needed materials such as rope, buoys, anchor pins and shackles to overhaul all installed buoys. Operational funds obtained mostly through the sale of PMM fundraising merchandise were low. This led us to plea to local stakeholders and international friends of PMM for donations of materials and equipment. Thanks to a small CORAL micro grant and funds raised by California friends of PMM, a complete maintenance overhaul of installed buoys was carried out in February, April and May, but we ran out of materials for some sites. An unexpected offer of assistance came to us in August from the Seakeepers International Society in USA. For many years, the organization has funded research into causes and the impact of damage to the sea, and through their own initiative and networking, they contacted our organization. Seakeepers liked what they saw and offered PMM sponsorship donation for the installation of one anchor mooring buoy. At the same time, the new owners of Robert’s Grove Beach Resort and Robert’s Grove Diver Center, concerned for the health of the reef around Robert’s Caye, readily donated nearly $3,000USD of materials from our wish list. We continued our fortune by completely checking off the remaining items on our wish list when Splash Dive Center, a long-time supporter of the project, gave a generous donation. Through the assistance of the Belize Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, duty exemption was obtained for the shipment of these materials. Unfortu-
nately, PMM still had to pay the GST (12.5%) and Environmental Tax (2%). This knocked a huge hole in our funds allocated to conduct the installation of the materials for the new donated buoys.
Friesen, gave us a 30% discount and completed the task in one day, and active PMM supporter Lisa Carne donated her truck to transport the pins.
California friends of PMM came to the rescue with the funds raised from their autumn fundraiser held in November 2011. Then we realized that we needed a breaker tool to install mooring pins. Shane Adsett of ADCOR Construction in Canada, a repeat returning visitor to Placencia, saved the day with a donation of a brand new breaker tool, which was shipped all the way from Canada and exempted from duty thanks to the Ministry of Tourism.
On, December 20, the first of the five buoys was installed at Long Coco Caye. This buoy was sponsored by the Seakeepers, and it is a double pin installation rated for 60T. The volunteer crew comprised of Erwin Westby (team leader and underwater hydraulic breaker/hammer drill operator), Tulu Villanueva (diver assistant to drill operator), Martin Westby (site boat captain), Ed Carr (hydraulic pump on the site boat operator) and Lisa Carne (underwater photographer). Splash Dive Center donated dive tanks and gears for the crew.
On December 9, we held a workshop instructing PMM participants how to splice the topside assemblies for five new buoy installations. Around that time, we also tackled a quality control issue with excessive galvanized finishing on the anchor pins. This odd occurrence required taking all the anchor pins to Industrial Machining Center in Spanish Lookout to have threads re-tapped and anchor pins assembled. The Center’s owner, Abe

As soon as a good weather window opened and the crew was clear of flu symptoms at Robert’s Caye, we completed three double pin installations (60T) and one single pin installation (40T). Robert’s Grove also donated fuel for equipment and boat transportation, as well as accommodation and food at the caye during the installations. Faygon Villanueva also provided boat transportation during the installation process. Despite inclement weather on January 16, the PMM crew managed to clean two buoys at Long Coco Caye on the way back to Placencia. PMM takes this opportunity to sends out a huge thank you to visitors who sailed with The Moorings earlier in December: David Gullion, Jason Gullion, Linda Hummel, Mischa Recko and Dick and Joanne Rosener who donated a collective $250USD to the mooring buoy project. PMM also thanks Mary Kelly for the $150USD Christmas donation in the name of Scott Carr who loves sailing in Belize and has been a long-time supporter of the Mooring Buoy Project. We’d also like to thank World Wildlife Fund Belize for their $1,000BZD donation; the Angelus Press for giving PMM a 30% discount on banner promoting the sponsors and donors who enabled PMM to install five new anchor mooring buoys. Young Artists Beautify Placencia in First Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest The brainchild of Festival Chairperson and BTIA Board Member Aline Habib, the first ever Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest was one of the most highly anticipated events at the 9thAnnual Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival – especially for the young people. Ten teams of eager artists gathered at the sidewalk at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning and worked busily until Contest Judge Gilvano Swasey of the Image Factory made his rounds at 5 p.m.. The contest was officially sponsored by Placencia Office Supply and greatly assisted by the Placencia Village Council who matched Wild Orchid Belize’s donation for all cash prizes. Ainsworth “Cubby” Leslie of Placencia Adventures by Land or Sea provided free masonry work to ensure that the designated “canvas” area was capped and smoothed out for the artists. COMMUNITY briefs Rotary Club of Placencia ROTARY AUCTION During the Holidays, members of the Rotary Club of Placencia slow down on projects and spend more time with family and friends, but, work continues on events such as our twice a month Bingo games and planning is always going on for future events and projects. BINGO The first Bingo game of the new year was held on January 5 with a large, enthusiastic crowd looking to cash in on the progressive jackpot. The lucky winners were Suzan, Ken, Annie, Jennie, Dick and Tracey (split pot), Doug and Marilyn (split pot), Adrian, and Doug. The “cover all” game was won by Doug who, despite not completing his card in 49 balls or less, took home a jackpot of over $100. The second game was held on January 19 as another large crowd gathered for a chance at the $1800+ progressive jackpot. The winners were Charles, Leah, Twyla, Ken Kent, Mary, Adrian, Edith, Carolyn, and Jannean. The “cover all” progressive jackpot game was won by Yoli who, despite not completing her card in 49 balls or less, took home the largest jackpot yet for a single game. As the jackpot grows, the crowds get larger and the pots grow accordingly for each game, so, anyone planning to play should try to arrive as close to the start of the game as possible to make sure they get a seat. Once again, we wish to thank Kathy Anglin for calling most of the games, the people that come out to play and support our efforts in the community, and J-Dees for providing the venue.
The first big event of the new year was the Rotary Club of Placencia’s Auction, which was held on the weekend of the Arts Festival. As the single largest fund raiser of the year for our Club, work began in December to solicit donations of items and services to be auctioned and continued right up to the date of the event. Last year’s Auction raised over $8,000, which goes right back into the community for causes such as the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department and the schools. Items such as lodging, dinners, and services were bid on by the enthusiastic crowd, which gathers every year. Once again, we had the benefit of hosting San Ignacio Rotarian Bill Butcher as our auctioneer, guaranteeing that the bids were high and the process entertaining. Work has been completed on the Seine Bight Preschool expansion; however, it has been noted that some work is required on the original building to provide for better security for the entire building. We have received estimates for this work and are currently pursuing funding. Based upon a suggestion by Placencia Rotarian Sonny Vernon, the Board of Directors has voted to raise funds and construct two picnic tables at the sports field and one on the beach, two benches on the beach, and renovate the donated grill at the sports field. Upon receipt of Placencia Village Council (PVC) approval for this work, funds will be raised and the work will be completed by volunteers from our Club and the community. Several other projects and events are coming up including the annual Senior Lunch in May.

Fund raising is ongoing for this event as well as exploring funding for the Fire Station and Trauma Center planned for the land near the airstrip. The PVC has provided some fill for the site and plans are underway to secure more as well as determine the site layout for maximum efficiency with the emergency vehicles that will be housed there. We have been planning this project for several years and will continue working on it to provide for better fire protection for the Peninsula as well as emergency medical services. OUR CLUB The Rotary Club of Placencia is pleased to announce that our membership recently increased by two as Elaine Hoch and Gail Smith were inducted as members in January. We look forward to working with both of them in trying to make our community the best it can be. The annual election for Club Officers was held with Wanda Stakutis being elected Secretary, Sandra Steele as Treasurer, and Greg Valiton as President-Nominee (2013-2014) on PresidentElect (2012-2013) Jim Weller’s Board of Directors. Jim will be selecting the remainder of his Board of Directors, including Rotary Foundation, Club Administrator, Public Relations, Service Projects, and Membership in the coming weeks. In December 2011, the Health Center was given a special Christmas Gift. Donors Don and Cindy Palmer of Mission Bay Retreat House in Northern Mayan Beach donated boxes of medical supplies to be used for general patient care.

The Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department will once again present A Taste of the Peninsula on Saturday March 10th in Placencia. This annual event is our signature fundraiser for the volunteer firefighters and has become hugely popular with our introduction of the theme of A Taste of the Peninsula. We invite our best chefs up and down the Peninsula (from hotels, restaurants, food carts, as well as individuals who love to cook) to donate a specialty dish, providing our guests with a mouth-watering array of culinary delights. Our music for the evening comes from a lineup of spirited local artists, all of whom are donating their performances in support of the volunteer firefighters. Expect them to perform on their own, but don’t be surprised when they mix it up between themselves and keep the party rocking. Throughout the evening winners are announced for our raffle, eagerly anticipated due to the quality and quantity of prizes generously donated each year by our own business community and points beyond. More Safety Tips from the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department Be courteous when driving. If and when you hear a siren, safely check rear view and side view mirrors for a fire truck, ambulance or police. Safely pull to the side in a safe area and allow them to pass. When at a fire scene, and you are physically able and want to help, ask a firefighter, “What can I do?” Always be on the lookout for powerlines – up or down on ground. Always consider them live! Let someone on the scene know. Smoke detectors save lives. If you do have a smoke detector, check it once a month to see that it is still working. Change the battery every January 1.
