Placencia Celebrates th Belize’s 34 Birthday
Everyone Loves A Parade The St. Georges Caye Day Parade on September 10th starts at the Placencia Municipal Pier with the crowning of the Queen of the Bay. School children, floats, adults in golf carts and vehicles are led by the Queen’s float and the Placencia Fire Truck. On the return of the parade, the Placencia Village Council will have food and drinks on sale at the Pier. The parade on the 21st is Carnival style and full of colour, music and a lot of dancing.
Belize Jaguars Kicked off September Celebrations in Canada The Belize Jaguars played Canada in the World Cup Qualifying rounds September 4th in Toronto. The score was Canada 3, Belize 0 and the Jaguars are looking for a win in Belize September 8th in Belmopan.

Calling All Anglers! At least $10,000 in prizes awaits the successful fishermen and women participating in the 17th Annual Placencia YamahaMarelco Saltwater Fishing Tournament over Independence Day weekend, September 19th and 20th. The eagerly anticipated event kicks off in the wee hours of Saturday morning, September 19th, when boats loaded with enthusiastic anglers leave the Placencia Municipal Pier in hopes of catching the big ones! All are vying for the largest Kingfish (8 lb minimum), Jack (12 lb minimum), and Barracuda (10 lb minimum), as well as those fish termed “extraordinary”: Wahoo (15 lb minimum), Dorado (7 lb minimum) and Tuna (5 lb minimum). Saturday’s weigh-in at the Municipal Pier completes the first day of competition, and all boats must be checked in to qualify. On Sunday, September 20th, these intrepid anglers rise early and do it all over again, leaving the dock before most of us are awake and checking back in midafternoon to qualify for the weigh in. Be sure to include the suspense and excitement of the weigh-ins as part of your Independence Day Weekend Celebration! Placencia Village Council Summer Projects The PVC, under the supervision of Charles Westby Jr., has cleaned two beach accesses. One by Art & Soul Gallery and one by St. John’s School. Other projects have been cleaning roadsides and culverts plus cleaning of St. John’s School yard and inside. The next project will be the bathrooms by the Placencia Municipal Pier in September. Rotary Club of Placencia Scholarships Every year in April the Rotary Club of Placencia hands out scholarship applications to the Standard VI classes in Placencia and Seine Bight. Money for these scholarships comes from our club, the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, private donations and for the past two years, the proceeds from the End of the World Marathon. When we award a scholarship it is for the full four years of High School. Our scholarship includes tuition, fees, books and CXC’s if not covered by the government. We also give each of our new students a calculator and memory stick. Each student is assigned a mentor from our club to make sure they are progressing as they should and to help find tutors if necessary. Students are selected by the club’s Scholarship Committee at the end of May. Students are informed and then we meet with the students and parent or guardian to make sure they understand the program and to arrange the student’s community service. Every student is required to new four year scholarships. In addition, we were do 20 hours of service per year. able to provide three 6th Form grants! Mangrove Science Camp I’ve heard tales of young children growing up in Biologist this once sleepy annelizehagan@ hotmail.com fishing village, daring each other to run through the darkness of the thick mangroves and shrubs along the shoreline. These were the days when there were no roads and no street lighting, Placencia Village was densely vegetated, relatively untouched by human hands. The sudden growth in tourism and associated development is plain to see; hardly any natural vegetation remains and the speed at which the peninsula is being developed is clearly affecting the coastal environment. By Dr Annelise Hagan
Healthy mangroves offer a wealth of benefits – they offer shoreline protection, act as a filter for sediments and nutrients coming off the land and provide a nursery habitat for fish which will ultimately populate the surrounding reefs. For three weeks in August, local students were given an inside look at the mangroves of the Placencia Lagoon. For three hours on three days a week, the young students would don masks and snorkels to take a close up look in the shallows of the mangrove roots. Thanks to the kind donations of boats from Southern Environmental Association (S.E.A.) and Wild Orchid these young “mangrove explorers” were also able to go on fieldtrips to explore deeper areas of the mangrove at the mouth of Placencia Lagoon and at nearby cayes.
The sense of wonder was infectious, as everyone was eagerly looking to find the best of the mangrove residents! One of the biggest delights was finding two seahorses, in two different locations. The students learned about different species of mangroves, the importance of mangroves and got a close up look at the flora and fauna that live within the roots, particularly of the red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) which are most common along the lagoon shore of the peninsula. Mangrove oysters, anemones, sea stars and sea cucumbers were other specimens to be found and we learnt about jellyfish defence mechanisms by experiencing a few stings! In the final week, the students undertook an important restoration activity, planting over 50 mangrove propagules (germinated seeds) along a barren area of the lagoon.

Wastewater as a Resource Who would think that wastewater could be anyone’s passion? For me, it is! My name is Christy Prouty, and I’m a PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering at the University of South Florida. This summer I’ve been moving around the village and throughout the cayes conducting research on the functionality, use, and perceptions of onsite wastewater systems that reclaim water and nutrients
from the treated effluent—wastewater-based resource recovery systems. Many households in Placencia use 2- or 3-chambered septic tanks that hold and partially treat the material we flush down the toilet. Typically, when water that comes out of the septic tank and into the leach field or soakaway, it is further treated by the microbiological organisms that are there. However, the nutrients that remain in the effluent (nitrogen, phosphorous—like liquid fertilizer) aren’t being fully utilized or removed. In some cases, the nutrients from wastewater can move into the groundwater or towards the marine/lagoon areas contaminating those resources and/or causing growth of undesirable algae. This is where the passion for wastewater comes in! Although the name— WASTEwater— speaks to the traditional way of looking at sewage—out of sight, out of mind, or an undesirable substance to treat and discard—there is a new way of looking at it— as a RESOURCE. This paradigm shift turns the traditional way of thinking upside-down by shifting the focus towards wastewater as a source for water reuse, energy production, or nutrient recovery. In the case of my study, resource recovery systems are taking

advantage of the nutrients in the effluent for irrigation to enhance the growth of gardens. I hope to continue working in the area alongside community partners to investigate these systems’ long-term impact to water resources, to contribute to better designs, implementation, operation, and maintenance of the systems, and to build awareness of resource recovery as a viable option for onsite wastewater treatment.

Getting a Little Dirty
Barefoot Bar’s Dirty Thursday Anyone that lives in Placencia knows that strange things happen in what we call the “slow season” One fateful Thursday at the Barefoot Bar a little over a year ago the perfect combination of boredom and booze created what is now known at Dirty Thursday.
Keeping Cool at Sailfish Resort
Barefoot regulars spent a slow Thursday afternoon trying to outdo one another by telling their favorite dirty joke. Brice, one of the owners of Barefoot, spurred them on by offering a free Shot of the Day for dirty jokes that made everyone else laugh. The bartenders loved it and even shared a few jokes of their own. The day passed with lots of laughs and even more off color humor. The following week the regulars gathered again and the dirty jokes and free shots flowed….. Dirty Thursday became a regular thing in no time. Patrons get one free shot of the day for one dirty joke (limit of one free shot per person per day). Delivery is important….. Bartenders actually cut the music and announce “we’ve got a dirty joke up here!” If the joke is a hit and has the crowd laughing the person gets a free shot, if the joke is a bust and generates groans the person can try again (and this does happen a lot). While not for everyone, many tourists have gotten involved and have been responsible for the delivery of some side splitting laughs. So next time you are a little bored on a Thursday and feeling a little dirty, head on over to Barefoot Bar and see if you have what it takes… (Mikey Nilson pictured below)

Point of View The Placencia Hybrid
I’ve lost count of the visits I’ve made to Placencia since 2006…maybe around 15. I’m not a local exactly, I’m not an Ex-Pat for sure, I’m not really a visitor….I think I’m the Placencia Hybrid. I don’t exactly LIVE here, but when I’m here, I LIVE. So, I have a few opinions, observations, recommendations mostly about food, drink and fun. Here’s what I’m thinking about this month. If you are lucky enough to be staying in a place that has cooking facilities, you might be making your own breakfast. I’m here to tell you that there is nothing fresher than Belize eggs. Buy them at any store - just look for the little stamp on each egg - that means real freshness. Three eggs for $1BZ - so much protein for so little change. Add to this some Kropfs bread for toast. But, hey, you’re on vacation… let someone else do the cooking. Breakfast burrito sound good today? Wendy’s, Paradise, JD’s - you can’t go wrong. Street food pique your interest? Carmen and Maria (across from M & M/bus area) and Alicia next to Omar will satisfy your craving. Something a little sweeter? The cinnamon rolls at Fantoni’s Kitchen and Friends Near the Pier will knock your socks off. Miss Reina (on the
road) has “sin”amon doughnuts that are to die for.
How about something a little special? Get yourself to Mariposa near the airport and order the Eggs Benedict….you can thank me later. These are perfect, trust me. If you have a car or can grab a taxi, it’s worth the quick trip up the peninsula to Maya Beach Hotel and Bistro for the Duck Hash. People have given up their first born children to have this experience. Libations can be an integral part of the “later breakfast” we will call it for lack of a better term than brunch. Maya Beach… for the WIN…for mimosas, Bloody Mary’s. Now let’s get to the ultimate Placencia breakfast….the Stuffed Fry Jack. I’ve had them in at least five different places, no complaints anywhere, but the Placencia Hybrid’s choice? Where it all began (I’m told) at De’Tatch. I’m guessing it’s a half pounder: eggs, bacon, ham, beans, cheese, lord knows what else, all cooked, then wrapped in a fabulous Fry Jack dough….puffed up, doused with cheese… ready for a good dose of Marie Sharps. Oh, I’m killing myself right now. Please try it, you can thank me later. The above is all opinion, I haven’t been everywhere, there might be more/better out there, but that’s it for now from the Placencia Hybrid

BELIZEAN FRY JACK Easy made - Nice and fluffy

3 cup flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 tablespoon salt 1 ½ cup water
Combine all ingredients and knead to a smooth consistency. (or put in food processor and pulse till it balls up - optional) Divide into 6 balls and let rest for 20 minutes. Roll out about ¼ inch thick any shape and cut fry in hot oil till golden brown.

“Kelly on the Lake . . . You Betta Belize It!”, a benefit concert for Placencia Humane Society, on 27 June, 2015, in Centralia, Illinois, U.S.A. Every penny raised was donated to Placencia Humane Society. Every penny added up to BZ $10,106.00! Hosted by David and Kris Ruff at their beautiful home, “The Lake House and Palapa Bar on the Sea of Centralia,” 85 guests began showing up at 1 pm, some staying until midnight. A number of folks had traveled many miles for this benefit concert. It was a full day of fun and fundraising, including live auctions, silent auctions, dessert auction, and 50/50 raffle. A Celebration of Ally’s Wonderful Life Mary Allyson Smith Finnegan passed away suddenly on August 28th. Ally and Mark, whom she married in 2000, first visited Placencia in 2004 after which they owned and operated Ally’s Guesthouse in Placencia Village for the past 9
years. Ally was well known in the village for her smile, big heart and zest for life. Her great love for her husband Mark was well known and for all her pets, Buc, Lulu (deceased) and her cats. Ally’s favorite quote was “To thine own

“ THE ULTIMATE Seine Bight Day Yet! ” This year’s Seine Bight Day heralded the name of “ULTIMATE” Seine Bight Day yet! A 3 day weekend in August, Seine Bight Day takes place on the beach side under the main tent. Festivities this year started off on Friday August 14 with the opening ceremony which commenced after 7pm. The village’s chairman, Justo Augustine, addressed the villagers of Seine Bight, after which guest speaker Hon. Patrick Faber took over. A block party followed on the main street by the Old Reservoir, which is now being turned into a Museum… Last year’s Seine Bight Day funds went to help this project get underway. All day beach bashes started at about 12pm on both Saturday & Sunday. Saturday night’s dance party went up until the wee hours of Sunday morning as Lloyd Augustine, Guwei, Sweet Pain, Vida & Kategory 5 Band entertained the crowd with enough hype and music to keep the party going. The turnout was one of positivity and pure love as people came together in support of these artists under one roof. The weekend’s djs, Dj Boss & Dj Swagg held down the entertainment and built the hype for all weekend performances by International Artist & Seine Bightian himself, Guwei. TEN YEARS for the Rotary Club of Placencia The Rotary Club of Placencia celebrated its tenth anniversary this last May. Over the years our Club, with the help from many other Rotary clubs, businesses and caring individuals on the Pen-insula and individuals and groups abroad, has accomplished many beneficial projects for our community and its citizens. The following synopsis is a brief overview of our Club’s accomplish-ments in the past ten years. Ten years ago the very first project was to install a flag pole at the basketball court so that the Belize flag could be on display. We believe this initial project was symbolic in that all later projects were chosen and completed to be helpful to the citizens of Belize, particularly those in the Placencia area.

In the third year of the program the Rotary Club of Calgary Alberta donated $10,000 which certainly gave the program a big boost. Every year since then the Rotary club of Edmonton West donates funds to the Program and now ALL the proceeds from the End of the World Marathon go to this program, thanks to founder Chip Lovett. This scholarship program has grown every year and we are very proud that we now have 25 students who are receiving Rotary scholarships. These are four year scholarships; they are not just for tuition, but cover all basic cost of attending high school. As well as financial support, each scholarship students has one or two Rotarian mentors who are available to the student for assistance such as arranging a tutor if the student is experiencing difficulties or other assistance they might require. In return, the student must donate several hours
Soon after, there was a big fire in the area and while it was successfully put out, the need for an organized response was clearly recognized. Rotarian Kathy Anglin, who is a trained fire fighter, made the proposal to start a volunteer fire department. This was greeted with enthusiasm and thus the first major project of our club was initiated. Along with founding the Fire Department, we also have installed smoke detectors in over 100 homes. The Fire Department is now inde-pendent of the Rotary Club; however an ongoing, informal, and mutually supportive partnership exists with members from both groups sharing in working on several annual projects. Later in the fall, we will be reno-vating the School’s canteen/kitchen in partnership with the West Edmonton Rotary Club and again with the assistance of many local contractors and workers. We also assisted with painting of the preschool in Placencia and the addition to the preschool at St. Alphonsus (with partner Edmonton West Rotary Club and Sue Dick’s group). We have also donated well over a thousand books for the Library at St. Johns. We donated money to build a shade shed at Georgetown technical High School. Every year we donate to the Seine Bight pre-school for Child Stimulation Month. With donated equipment from a Canadian Rotary Club and installed playground equipment at St. John’s and in the BTL Park. We also made a significant donation to assist in setting up the Outlet Program for the Village’s children. Six years ago Rotarian Linda Cazin noticed that many of the students entering Standard I in Seine Bight were a bit behind in their reading skills compared to students in North America. So she proposed that we start a Summer Reading Program. That year we had 12 students, three schol-arship students to help, and four Rotarians for a one week program. From that it has now grown to encompass both primary schools (St. Alphonsus and St. John’s), has about 50 students each year participating in the Program. As well, all of our scholarship students help work in this Pro-gram as part of their community service commitment. This Program depends heavily on the Ro-tary Club of Edmonton West which sponsors five to seven fully qualified teachers every year!
Some of our other community projects include fencing the football field and putting up the back stop in Placencia, building and painting the fence around the cemetery in Placencia, ob-taining medical supplies for the clinic and building the ramp to the clinic. We obtained a garbage truck for the village of Placencia and had it flown in from the US to Belize City! We bought a boat for the youth Sailing Club. Rotarian Lydia Villanueva, who has always worked with the elderly, noticed that unlike the US or Canada, there is minimal services for elderly in Belize. She suggested that we do a Senior Luncheon. Of course this was met with enthusiastic applause form members and the community so started our annual Sand very popular senior luncheon! Longtime residents of Placencia and Seine Bight 65 years of age or older are invited every year to come out for this. And, as with everything we do, our senior program has grown. We also give out food baskets to seniors in need every December. We do receive a donation from West Edmonton Rotary Club for this work as well as donations from community businesses and from our Club. This year we also granted funding for a education and support group for individuals and their caretakers affected by diabe-tes in our community. We very much hope that our work in these areas can all be enhanced in the future. Every year with help from Luci Wallen, Kathy Anglin and Tracy Eiily we do a Haunted House. For anyone who has attended this you know we do it professionally and it is SCARY! All proceeds from this go to the toy Drive in December for the local children. This is another event that while not an official Rotary program, our members are always there to help for the day.
Page 27 Ellis Sanchez made this happen. This a youth club for students between the ages of 12-18. In the coming years we hope to start a Rotaract Club, Rotary for young adults ages 18-30. This group offers youth an opportunity to experience the rewards of helping their community as well as positive companionship much like all other Rotary Clubs. Naturally, none of the things that we do can be done without help, money or labor! We have been very lucky with developing Rotary Partners such as the Edmonton West Club, Massachusetts Club and the Calgary Alberta, Stirling, Alberta and Wasilla, Alaska Rotary clubs. Fund raising is very important as well. We run Bingo Games have done dances, cricket matches, and raffles, Duck Races, on line raffles, our annual Auction, beach Olympics and many more events to raise the needed funds. For these we thank the community for donating and coming out to support us! Rotarians also like to have fun! Three or four times a year we celebrate with a party with our fellow Rotarians. This past May we celebrated our tenth anniversary at a party hosted by Rotarian Gail Smith. We reminisced about all the good times and all the wonderful things our Club has accomplished. While we are proud of what has been accomplished to date, we have great plans for the coming years, both in Projects and Fund Raising. We anticipate we will be able to celebrate many more accomplishments and contributions in the next ten years!

These threats are so numerous it seems an overwhelming concept to even think of how humans can reverse this downward trend. Since 2006, Laughing Bird Caye National Park (LBCNP) has been given a helping hand. Under the direction of Lisa Carne, and her communitybased, not-for-profit organization Fragments of Hope (FoH), over 26,000 fragments of Acropora species of coral have been grown in specially developed nurseries and out-planted on the degraded reef. The results are an obvious increase in coral cover (by 14%), and tourists, locals and even other marine life are benefitting from the newly thriving reef community. The branches of these acroporid corals offer shelter and protection for numerous fish and other critters. Laughing Bird Caye National Park is one of the few complete no-take marine zones in Belize and is carefully co-managed by Southern Environmental Association (S.E.A.) and the Belize Forestry Department.
