HEARTS, MINDS, MONEY EQUALS SEINE BIGHT OUTREACH PROGRAM September 18 kicked off its ground breaking Seine Bight Outreach Program, a commitment between Placencia Humane Society (PHS) and pet owners in the Seine Bight community. This long-term and ongoing engagement will improve and support the welfare of pets in Seine Bight Village, by providing free spays/neuters/shots, with transport of pets to and from the PHS vet monthly clinic. the clinic, and just do the work.

The Seine Bight Outreach Program is off to a very positive start. By the end of the day, the pet owners we had served were grateful, and had become PHS advocates within their community. They were already speaking to their neighbors about this outreach program.

Why has PHS embraced this program?

Thanks to Kelly McGuire’s very generous donation, PHS now has the funds for this program.

Ever wonder how much medical attention PHS monthly clinics provide the pets in our community? Wonder how much it costs the Placencia Humane Society? Here are the statistics and expenses for the October, 2015 PHS vet clinic. This is why PHS must always fundraise and ask for community support, and why we are so grateful for every donation. October 2015 Clinic (Including Seine Bight Outreach Program) • 9 spays and neuters (2 dog spays as part of Seine Bight Outreach Program) • 39 vaccinations, antibiotics, Ivermectin, other medications and vitamins (9 treatments as part of the Seine Bight Outreach Program) • 8 wormings (6 wormings as part of Seine Bight Outreach Program) • 1 eye surgery (Seine Bight Outreach Program) • Subsidies by PHS: $1,440 (not including $760 subsidized in Feral Cat Program)

All this lack of moving need more) to help sponsor the can lead to health issues later in life young men. Of course, nothing in

Our next challenge is to motivate the young ladies on the peninsula to run so next year we will be looking for more sponsors. Our challenge is to find sponsors for as many that want to run.

The Wallens. . . at Your Service In July 1974, Luci & Harald Wallen arrived in Belize – they were on a delayed honeymoon – having been married in May earlier that same year. They had met at college in Colorado and shared the same adventurist spirit. They loved the sea, the warm climate and charming ambience; Harald particularly wanted to be a bush pilot – so Belize seemed the perfect place. He had visited Belize before, but this was Luci’s introduction to a country she has come to love and which they have both adopted as their own. Well, here they are 41 years later and they still love the sea and the climate, but a few other things have been introduced into their lives over the years. Today, Luci & Harald own and operate the very popular Wallen’s Hardware & Houseware with a fleet of trucks that keep the peninsula provided with supplies and delivery service. Their original home was in a 15’ trailer on land they had purchased (presently near the water tower). They both had various jobs at various times: Harald as driver to Nim Li Punit for Rum Point Inn & Placencia Cove (now ChabilMar) to fisherman for the co-op; Luci raising the 4 kids and selling fresh vegetables which came from Cayo via their friend Chris Lowe & his Land Rover. There were a few other stores here at the time, but none of them had fresh vegetables. Well, their little market flourished so they rented the old British Army mess hall (non-existent now, but located where Sea Spray is today) where their business was known as “The Market”. On the days that the fresh produce came in, customers lined up early to take a number and wait their turn. Eventually, Harald started trucking in the fresh produce and taking up fish (to sell in Belmopan & Cayo) in his 4 –wheel drive pickup (courtesy of Steve Christensen). This was all before the road was in, and Harald is very proud of the fact that he was the first person to bring supplies to Placencia by road. Little did he realize it, but this was the beginning of his trucking business and his adventures on the bad roads.

the area, they became a limited company. It was in the 90’s that they started selling hardware items – a very welcome service for the increased building activity that the area was experiencing – renting a building where StreetFeet is now located. During all this time, the Wallens raised their four children – all born in Belize: Mariko – now 37 – helps in the business part time, but has other plans for her own career. Nina – now 36 – is a Pharmacist. Harald IV (“Boy”) – now 34 – works mechanics in the business and is When the peninsula road was built in the mid technician for Culligan. Carl – now 29 – has 80’s, Harald & Luci decided the time had come taken over the trucking end of the business and to build their own store close to the road. As does deliveries up the Peninsula. their trucking business really started to expand The new air-conditioned supermarket opened in to service hotels, businesses and individuals in 1999 and brought big changes for the Wallens and much appreciation from their customers. With this added space, the wholesale business thrived. The aftermath of Hurricane Iris in 2001 brought many changes to the community (thankfully the store had only minor flooding & damage) and there was a big boon in building and restoration. People who came to assist decided to settle here. Around this time, the pharmacy was added to the business as Nina had completed her credentials. The Wallens expanded yet again with a new hardware/houseware building in 2010 at the north side of the supermarket. When the road became paved by 2010, many new opportunities arose for businesses: the Chinese

opened up several supermarkets and the road became a bustle of activity with taco & vegetable stands, and traffic from outer districts delivering all sorts of goods – even taxis now run up & down the peninsula! New resorts, restaurants & condos as well as more tour operators opened up businesses. The Wallens still love Placencia and still enjoy the activities that brought them here – the sea & fishing – now enjoyed by seven grandchildren; but to enjoy these in the golden years, they want to scale down a little by giving up the grocery section and become debt-free, thus being released from the usury grip of a banking institution. Harald is a member of the Village Council, and while he likes the progress he has seen over the years in Placencia, he is mindful that this growth needs overall planning if the village is to retain its unique charm. In order to achieve this, Placencia needs to have their by-laws passed (hopefully in our life time)!

Fresh from the Market to your Table Placencia Village has three main areas to find fresh produce. At the south end of the village is Greg and Carmita’s stand with fresh veggies from Cayo plus bread and rolls from the French Bakery in San Ignacio. Greg brings everything in fresh Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and has been making this trip for 19 years. You can also find thick cut pork chops, yogurt, organic honey, noni juice and Jungle Remedies juice made by Harry Guy, Sr. in Cayo. They also carry Goss cocoa powder and yoghurt.

I will say though....I learned more than I needed to about how men interact—I was the only female with 9 men for 4 straight, 10 hour days! The movie quoting, pranks, and guy humor could have been a show in itself. It was easier than I thought once we got going, the crew helps with prompting—while the

We sincerely hope that the show brings down even more interest and tourism to Placencia. It seemed to us most locals were really supportive and happy about the attention given to the village, and everyone we interacted with was truly wonderful throughout the filming!

Cricket!

On Saturday, October 10, P l a c e n c i a Placencia welcomed back Rotary Club cricket! Our team hosted the River Valley Boys from Belize City. The Placencia Village Council and the Placencia Rotary Club had food for sale and a bar, along with a bake sale from our Interact club (proceeds to go towards a welcome sign for the peninsula). By Wanda Stakutis

Due to rainy conditions the game was a bit late starting. The weather cleared, the field dried and the fun began! It was a close match, with the River Valley Boys finally pulling out a win, 120 to 116. Our team played brilliantly and are anxiously awaiting their next game. Cricket has a long history in Belize but it has slowed in recent years in Placencia. We have a fantastic team and with the support of the community we should be able to have many more games.
