Belizeans Dominate Inaugural Placencia Marathon Almost 100 runners of all ages tested their physical and mental endurance on the Placencia Road on Dec. 8, 2012 and ran like the world was about to end. While the inaugural “End of the World” Placencia Half Marathon and Marathon was intended to serve as an international tourism attraction on the Peninsula, the event saw a significant number of Belizean participants who accounted for the large majority of all registered runners. Race director Chip Lovett teamed up with Ian Gray, an athletic event veteran in Belize, and a number of enthusiastic volunteers who assisted with coordinating what was considered to be one of the most organized marathons ever executed in the country. Forty-six-year-old Marvin Hope, a Belizean living in Texas, planned his short trip to his native country just to compete in the marathon. “I thought, ‘Anything that has to do with running and Belize, I’m there.’” Hope beat all 15 finishers in the 26.2-mile marathon and placed first in the male, age 40-49 division. While still dark and the village very quiet, Hope and the other runners took off for the race at 5:15 a.m. near the starting line at Wallen’s Market in Placencia Village. They continued to the half marathon start point, a few miles south of Riversdale at the north Please see End of the World Marathon, pg. 13

Placencia Sets the Bar in Bartending Twenty-five-year-old Fermin Choc is Placencia’s bartending rock star. Choc proudly boasts the Belize Tourism Board’s (BTB) “Bartender of the Year” title. On his day off from The Placencia Hotel, Choc traveled to Cayo where he impressed judges with his flair and mixology skills at the 10th annual BTB Taste of Belize event held on Dec. 1, 2011 at the San Ignacio Resort. Choc’s energetic and confident demonstration quickly gathered a crowd of fans including his wife and five-year-old son, as he competed in the three-round competition. His signature drink, the “Placencia Fish House Punch” was an instant hit. Choc practiced his award-winning concoction for a month leading up to the event and says all are invited to visit the Placencia Hotel for a taste and for a look at his juggling tricks.

End of the World Marathon Continued from cover page

RAVE REVIEWS FOR MARATHON “A flat, tropical, coastal run. The only hills being periodic speed bumps on the asphalt road course. Started in the dark at 5:15 a.m., but the folks in Placencia Village, Belize were sitting on their porches to cheer the runners on. Water stations every mile had ample water and fruit. They were greeted with cheers from anxious spectators and immediate attention from volunteers.

Marathon volunteer, Bill Taylor presents trophy to international participant, Robyn Dodge who topped all female finishers in the full marathon.

Placing first out of 78 finishers in the 13.1 mile half marathon, which also finished near Wallen’s Market, was Andy Gonzalez. The 18-year-old, who is born to Belizean parents and lives in Chetumal, Mexico also placed first in the male-under-30 division. His sister, 21year-old Tania Gonzalez, who placed eighth out of all the finishers in the half marathon, topped the female-under-30 division. And while the event may have boosted local tourism attracting Belizeans and residents to the beautiful Peninsula, it certainly made an impact on a total 30 firsttime international visitors. Twenty-one-year-old Sam Floy from England had been traveling on his own in Central America and decided he would visit Belize. He stumbled across information about the marathon on the Belize Tourism Board’s website after a quick Google search, and was instantly

Pre-race pasta dinner and post-race party with beer and local music were as well done as any of the big city marathons I have run (actually they were better in Placencia). The aid stations were better than most marathons I have run, coming every mile and being well-stocked. This race brought joy to the runners (both half and full marathons) and the great volunteer support staff and the communities of the Placencia peninsula as well.

There’s no stopping 68-year-old Henry Art. The longtime biology professor at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA was the oldest participant in the event. This was his first time visiting Belize.

Would I run this 'End of the World Marathon' again? You Bet!” - Henry Art, 68 years old. What others had to say … “I think it’s a great start. Think it should be held twice a year. It keeps you motivated.” – Everett Flowers, 41 years old, Belize City “You have a very pretty town!” – Akina Osawa, 28 years old, Japan “It was well organized. Excellent scenery. Inspiring. Enough water stops. Great race! … I did my best time ever. Of course, I’m looking forward to doing this again next year.” – Dr. Victor Rosado, 45 years old, Belize City “It was beautiful. Everything was organized. There was no traffic … I would definitely come again next year. The best marathon I enjoyed. Everyone was so nice.” – Gilbert Sebastian Nunez, 57 years old, Belize City “One of the best marathons I’ve ever run. It was really organized.” – Louis Haulze, 46 years old, Belize City lured to Placencia. “I didn’t have any training; had never run more than seven miles before,” said Floy. After bussing, hitchhiking, and finding Julia’s Cabana’s, which he also learned about online, Floy ran the half marathon and placed 14th . “It was a good decision to come to Belize and participate,” said Floy before the award ceremony. “People said it would hurt the morning after, but it hurts right now.” As for Placencia, “It almost seems perfect,” added Floy. A few notable Peninsula athletes also competed in the event. Keira Eiley of Placencia Village, a national cycling competitor, said she was ready to give up during the last two miles of the full marathon after suffering blisters on her feet. But the determined young woman, who placed 12th in the marathon, kept going and said she is ready for the next race in 2013. John Guzman of Seine Bight and first place winner in 2012’s Battle Cancer Walk said he developed a cramp by the Placencia Hotel, but volunteers assisted with some electrolytes, which helped him finish the race. “This was the biggest one for me. First time I ran so much in my life,” said Guzman. He placed 7th in the full marathon and like Keira, he is looking forward to running again this year.

PHS 2013 Projects to Provide Extra Care for Local Pets By Doran Yount

New Name Contest, one of PHS’s rescued dogs. Congratulations to Kim Yount, whose “Nonny” won her first prize of a $50 gift certificate from Jaguar Bowling Lanes. Second prize of a 90 minute hot stone massage treatment b y P atricia Celenza went to Joyce Ann Knight from Florida City, Florida who chose “Lovey.” Third prize of a $50 gift certificate from Barefoot Bar went to Jennifer Owen of Kansas City, Missouri, with “Boomerang.”

PHS Chairman, info@placencia-pets.org As we all welcome a new year, the Placencia Humane Society (PHS) also welcomes a new Board. At our annual general meeting on Nov. 23, 2012, PHS members elected nine enthusiastic and energetic individuals to its Board:  Doran Yount, Chairman  David Kafka, Vice Chairman  Candy Powers, Treasurer  Shannon Romero, Secretary  Dawn Michel Walton  Severine Aragon  Sabrina Kelly  Patricia Celenza  Martha Scott

And these folks are not shy about getting down to business! Here are some of the projects our Board is already working on:  The free (donation supported) monthly vet clinics will continue, the third weekend of each month, and the PHS building is now open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, for your convenience to buy pet meds, supplies, and treats. 

You can reach PHS day or night at 503-3177. Leave a message and your call will be returned promptly.

The monthly feral cat clinic continues in full force. Trapping, spaying/neutering feral cats, giving them shots, and releasing them back into their environment dramatically reduces the feral cat population.

We had a fun time deciding the winners from the wonderful entries in the Give No Name a

“Nonny Lovey” thanks all the winners, the generous prize donors, and PHS for giving her a new name and a new life.

PATRICIA CELENZA

Pets and owners visit PHS store tended by group secretary, Shannon Romero, for supplies.

PHS is looking into Microchipping- a permanent identification system that would replace pet ID tags that fall off or can be removed. A small chip, the size of a grain of rice, is implanted painlessly into all kinds of pets. The pet is registered as a number, and can not only be traced if lost when the chip is read by a scanner, but all pet information is immediately available—pet name, owner contact info, medical history, etc.). PHS feels this program is necessary not only for each and every one of our pets, but also will help in the Feral Cat Program. Microchipping will help PHS collect data on feral cat populations and help us know their health. No longer will feral cats need to be brought into the clinic, thereby making PHS operations so much more efficient and also saving money—funds that can be spent in other well-deserving programs.

In March, 2013, U.S. vets will be offering animal clinics on and around our Peninsula. Stay tuned for details.

Pack for a Purpose! Yes, there is an official program all you travelers coming here for sun and culture can check out at http:// www.packforapurpose.org/ But why not just “pack for a PHS purpose” on your own and pack some light weight pet items, such as collars, leashes, meds, even office supplies as simple as pens.

Be on the lookout for donation bins at Wallen’s Market and Top Value Market in Placencia. Patronize these business establishments and support PHS by purchasing much needed PHS Please see PHS Updates, page 24

A Princess Tale: Rescued Dog Shares Her Story By Patricia Celenza PHS Board Member, info@placencia-pets.org Who would have thought my life was going to take a big up-turn when a car hit me and broke my leg? Certainly not me, a little brown potlickah (Creole/Kriol for mixed breed dog). I was in pain, and my owner no longer wanted me. Who wanted a dog with only three legs? It was pretty much a certain death for me. But one day as I was limping on the road just north of the Post Office, feeling pretty pathetic, someone saw me, picked me up and took me to the Placencia Humane Society’s (PHS) clinic in Seine Bight Community Center. Suddenly I was the center of attention! Lots of people were touching me so gently, curious about my broken leg, but also just so happy to see me! My vocabulary grew immediately by two words— “rescue” and “princess.” I had no idea what they meant, but I heard them repeated over and over again. I am a smart dog, and I learned very quickly that when people said princess, they said it softly and kindly and they meant ME!!! Yes, I am Princess! Dr. Tina Cone and a whole team of kind folks at this PHS clinic fiddled with my left back leg, and actually made a brace for me out of copper tubing. They dressed my leg to keep it clean and still. And then I met Miss Linda, this wonderful woman who takes rescued animals into her home. They are cast-offs like me. And Miss Linda didn’t care that my leg was broken. Miss Linda took me home, cared for me, helped me to heal and get strong. She introduced me to her other dogs who themselves had been “rescued.”

I learned many things from Miss Linda and her furry friends. Buddy was my healer. Some dogs just have that caring instinct, and Buddy and I became fast friends. Another important word came into my vocabulary--love! Miss Linda is preparing me for my real “furever” home. Because that is what Miss Linda does. No, she does not get paid for it. She teaches and nurtures, fosters, and loves so I can be adopted out to another loving family. And I am so ready for my furever home!

LINDA TYLER

It takes a village to rescue a dog. Placencia Humane Society volunteers change the cast on Princess’ broken leg.

I am still young, maybe one or two years old, full of energy and I love to play. My leg healed nicely, so I can climb up on the bed and couch to take naps. I run like the wind, chasing birds on the beach. I swim so far out at Sea, Miss Linda is afraid I will swim all the way to Panama! I am learning new commands, such as “sit” and “stay” and of course, that real important word—“NO!”

LINDA TYLER

Princess Continued from page 20 During the day I am outside where I love to chase lizards and dig in the sand. At night, I sleep inside where I am known to snore. When Miss Linda speaks to me, I tilt my head, listening real hard at understanding what she is saying. I also like watching TV! And if you rub my belly and pet me real gentle, I will be your absolute best friend! I guarantee I will provide you hours of laughs and entertainment! Plus, I have been spayed, and all my shots are up to date. Yes, I am ready to go! Maybe I sound like the companion you have been waiting for. Wait no longer! Here I am, ready for you! And while this sweet potlickah has your attention, we sure could use more special Miss Linda’s. No, it is not easy what she does, the loving fostering of a pet. It is a real gift. If you feel you have this gift, this ability to accept and prepare a pet for a furever home, come on board! Contact Doran Yount at 670-4130 or email PHS at info@placencia-pets.org. And don’t forget to check out PHS at www.placencia-pets.org. I have one more thing to say—thank you, PHS, for rescuing me!

Mistletoe Ball

Continued from cover page. and the Placencia Saltwater Fishing Tournament, the Placencia Mistletoe Ball is an elegant affair, which has provided a unique opportunity for those working on the ground in the tourism industry to celebrate their year’s work and connect with other tourism professionals and visitors on the Peninsula. The event was held for a consecutive year at venue sponsor Robert’s Grove Beach Resort. The Mistletoe Ball Planning Committee worked closely with resort executives and industry partners to offer exciting and innovative changes to the event’s 13th celebration including an official logo, menu changes and a sophisticated “Black and Gold” theme. Almost 200 guests visited the Seaside Resort at Robert’s Grove on the night of Friday, Dec. 14 and were welcomed at the entrance with delicious milk and dark organic Mistletoe Ball memento chocolate bars donated by Seine Bightbased Goss Chocolates, as well as sleek gold wristbands. Guests sat around candlelit tables decorated with black and gold accents and dined on a variety of foods featuring donated products from some of the Placencia Peninsula’s most preferred and loyal purveyors. The kitchen team at Robert’s Grove prepared a gourmet menu offering Chicken Cacciatore, Braised Beef in a Cognac Mushroom Sauce, Shrimp Cocktail, a Medley of Select Seasonal Vegetables, Rice and Beans and Pineapple Crumble for dessert.

Guests were treated to Goss chocolates specially prepared for the Mistletoe Ball.

According to results gathered from a post-event survey, most guests preferred the selection of food offerings in 2012 over 2011 and the overall event. The PBTIA thanks Quality Poultry Products, Country Meats, Aqua Mar Shrimp Farm, Greg’s Fruits and Vegetables of Placencia Village, Cardelli Farms and Eco-Friendly Solutions for their donations towards the successful fundraiser dinner. Courtesy of the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), Belize’s most popular event entertainer, The Gilharry 7, kept nearly 300 guests dancing throughout the night until closing time at 3 a.m. In addition to the pumping party music featuring a blend of rhythms including Afro-Caribbean and Latin beats, all guests were offered a chance to take part in the event’s grand holiday raffle. Winning the headlining prize of one roundtrip ticket to any Delta Air Lines destination in the United States or Canada was Regina Smith. The visiting retired archaeologist who worked with the United States Bureau of Land Management in Nevada was ecstatic about her prize and says she is looking forward to booking another ticket to Belize. Organizers recognize that an increasing number of tourists are participating in the Placencia Mistletoe Ball, which offers a unique opportunity to mingle with local industry insiders and party Belizean style. In addition to the BTB, Robert’s Grove and aforementioned food sponsors, the Placencia BTIA would like to express its sincere gratitude to the following sponsors: Marketing: Placencia Office Supply and logo designer Laura Godfrey; BTB; Muzamanzie Photogrpahy Bar: Citrus Products of Belize Limited, Cuello’s Distilleries, Old Master Rums, Travellers Liquors, Premium Wines and Spirits and Bowen & Bowen, Ltd. The Placencia BTIA would also like to thank its Planning Committee and event volunteers and coordinators: Aline Habib, Kimberley Viner, Anton Leslie, Stewart Krohn, Dave Vernon, Apolo Caliz, Jean Marc Tasse, Micheal Kramer, Ricky Coh, Pierre Brisebois, Stephen Kelly and Robyn McCutheon. A special thanks to all the hardworking and enthusiastic staff members of Robert’s Grove Beach Resort for their invaluable efforts in assisting the PBTIA with pulling off a memorable event. ▪
