An Artist’s Inspiration By Kevin Baizar

dream of doing-because the world Approximately 6 years ago I began becomes more beautiful with art. to paint. While working in Placencia I never try to finish my paintings, I was exposed to the potential of the because through its experience art industry and with that exposure my greatest lesson from it was my love for what I used to do was patience and upon its completion rekindled. Today it continues to burn becomes a virtue. All my paintings in me with great encouragement. As a kid I knew I had the ability despite that my experience was mainly in drawing and sketching, Placencia exposed me to the next level up which was painting. Knowing my imagination would take me places, I realized painting was nothing like sketching and therefore I had to find ways of teaching myself concepts, techniques, preparation and execution. So while many other individuals were out partying, drinking or having some kind of fun I was up just like them all night, but I was on the internet countless hours learning things that I could use to expedite my learning curve while simultaneously meeting demands of my day to day job.

in some way tells a positive story and I employ viewers at the Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival who asked me about them. There are people in my life that sacrifice countless hours dedicated to my work and appreciate the understanding of my wife Recia Baizar and my little

inspiration Khamani Baizar. If they were not there to keep the rest of my life intact, I can’t say where in my painting I would be. I am Kelvin Baizar, aspiring entrepreneur in the fine art industry and owner of Depiction Painting Belmopan, Belize C.A. “The Masterpiece is His glory, mine is but a Depiction”

Today people do not believe I only started to paint six years ago. If there is any reason for my progression, it’s believing that God blesses us all with something that we can use in our life to achieve not only success but our most heartfelt dreams and aspirations. It doesn’t matter where in life you are when that blessing is ready to find you it will. Now with this gift, I feel I can share something positive to the world as I always

History of the Placencia Arts Festival By Jack Linker

I recently learned of the death of a friend, a talented Belizean writer, John Alexander Watler from Monkey River Town. With this sad news, it seemed to be time to recognize John and the others who started this popular, annual event and who also are no longer with us. In the beginning there was a hurricane, a few friends and a need for change. John, an internationally recognized author and humourist, lamented to me how difficult it was to be recognized in his own country. Blanche and Jack wished that people interested in culture had a way of sharing this interest and Lola, Paul, Greta and Sharrell agreed with the need for a change in the social life on the Peninsula. After a few meetings and more

than a few libations, we decided to organize a festival to recognize artistic talent and develop new artists. Also there would be meetings to share artistic ideas, classic videos and meet others interested in all things cultural. From this came PPAA (Placencia Peninsula Arts Association), and the first Placencia Sidewalk Festival in 2003. Blanche, a noted dancer was our first President, Carrie, a well know poetess and actress, our second President and Flo a talented Italian artist our third. All are gone and PPAA is also gone. But, that was years ago, where did we change course? And, why? And, more importantly, is there still a need for the PPAA, an organization to share cultural interests, help develop artistic talents, both young

and old in the area and recognize artistic achievements. While John, Blanche, Carrie, Sharell, Candy and Flo are no longer living or in Placencia, their spirit and creative energies can inspire others to make

the Placencia Peninsula a home for ALL people to recognize the beauty of nature and human efforts. Will the PPAA make a comeback for the benefit of the young and old talent now living in our area?

HARVEST CAYE PROJECT-SUPREME COURT CASE: BTIA VS THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT APPRAISAL COMMITTEE AND THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT PRESS RELEASE: Belize City, Belize–On Wednesday, 13 January 2016, the Belize Supreme Court ruled on BTIA’s lawsuit against the Department of the Environment (DOE) and the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) following the DOE’s decision to approve the construction by Belize Island Holdings (BIHL) of a cruise port at Harvest Caye, just three miles south of Placencia Village. The Hon. Justice Abel declared that there was a breach of Regulation 20 of the EIA Regulations concerning to the published notice in relation to the Addendum to the EIA. The court also ruled that the content of the published notice was deficient in various areas and, very significantly, that the decision of the NEAC to recommend the approval of the EIA was in breach of EIA Regulations, prior to considering the EIA for approval. In delivering the judgement, the Hon. Justice Abel also observed that the consultation process was somewhat short-circuited and that short cuts were taken, “which ought not to have happened, and one hopes this will not happen in a similar situation in the future”. The Court determined that BTIA was “largely and significantly” successful against the DOE, NEAC and BIHL, and ruled that the Defendants should pay the cost of the Court proceedings in the sum of $50,000. The Court judgment means that the DOE and the NEAC must now do a better job at discharging their legal responsibilities to safeguard Belize’s natural resources and administer Belize’s environmental regulations fairly and responsibly. Click here to view the full judgment. “BTIA is not against large tourism development projects. It has always advocated that the Government of Belize must ensure that the EIA process is fully complied with, no matter who the developer is, and that meaningful public consultation is had in the interest of safeguarding Belize’s natural and cultural resources. It is the integrity of these resources that makes us a premier tourism destination”, said President of BTIA, Osmany Salas. The BTIA expresses its sincere gratitude to legal counsels Mr. Godfrey P. Smith and Mr. Andrew Marshalleck assisted by Ms. Leslie Mendez and Dr. Heide Weiskel from E-LAW for her support and technical expertise at the witness stand, and to ALL our members for believing in the substantial importance of this case that sets precedent for future projects to follow due process. Point of View I’m On a Roll this Month!

Back in 1970, I lived in Lake Tahoe, California. It was the dead of winter and a very strange thing happened in the then small town. Not one, not two, but THREE ice cream parlors opened within one month. Why January? Why did all three entrepreneurs have the same idea at the same time? Hard to say and I couldn’t tell you if they are all still in business today but the point is someone saw a niche and filled it. Flash forward to Placencia today. When I first started coming here more than ten years ago, we were hard pressed to find a good head of lettuce let alone any special foods that make life worth living. Now that food basics are plentiful, I have noticed the entrepreneurs here jumping in and the result is some of the tastiest Cinnamon Rolls on the planet.

Strictly for Truth in Reporting, I have sort of drizzled glaze and this one had me licking managed to try three different rolls. Here the plate. How embarrassing. $5B for one on is the report in no particular order. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Fantoni’s on the main road bakes up lots of goodies all day long. The rolls from here have plenty of cinnamon swirled into a bread-ish dough, a little heavier and hold up well to a good cup of Belizean coffee. $8B for a pan of four.

It’s not my job to pick winners, this is NOT the Pillsbury Bake-Off. All samples rank high on ooie-gooie-ness, are a splendid way to start the day and a great reason to keep on exercising. Thank you for yet another great Placencia food Barbara Slade has made her reputation with her experience…. I’m glad you all chose Cinnamon deliveries to Greg’s Vegetable Stand on the main Rolls instead of ice cream! road close to the soccer field. You have to be early to get in on these treats, she announces on Facebook when she is delivering, don’t dally if you want to try these chewier, more traditional Rolls. $10B for four. Friends by the Pier version is another reason to get up early. I had to order my roll the day before because they sell out so quickly. Rolled tighter with more layers means a more intense cinnamon jolt. All of the rolls I tried had some

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, and one of the largest creature of any kind alive today. It is classified in the order of Orectolobiformes (five gill slits, anal fin, two dorsal fins, no spines on the fins and the mouth in front of the eyes). They are most often seen in Belize from Placencia. Unfortunately, since whale sharks are night feeders, there really are no guarantees as to when they show up.

Islands are HOT… Recently we have seen an increase in inquiries for islands here in Belize and have sold two in the past couple months. Currently we have another under contract and an offer for another. Excellent news right! All along the Barrier Reef there are roughly 200 islands. Some mangrove based, sand base or coral base. They are unique in that they are all located in a stable country which gives you absolute ownership. They are located close enough to mainland and they can be developed. With no more than a 45mins boat ride you can explore some of the most beautiful islands. The scenery is just magniÞcent and will blow your mind. Schedule your island tour TODAY with Boris Mannsßed & Associates. Lets us help you Þnd your paradise!
