Placencia Lobsterfest 2014, an Epic Summer Beach Party for Everyone

It’s Turtle Time! By Dr. Annelise Hagan SEA Science Director annelisehagan@hotmail.com

Although it may not be high season for tourists right now, Placencia beach is attracting a different and very welcome visitor. For the next four months, turtles will be coming ashore to lay their precious clutches of eggs. But Placencia beach is not what it used to be and turtles now have to contend with a maze of beach chairs, buildings, cement walkways and bright lights. Three species of sea turtle nest on Belize’s beaches – Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Green (Chelonia mydas) all of which are endangered, with the Hawksbill being listed as ‘critically endangered’ on the Redlist of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). So far in 2014, Cozy Corner and Miramar in Placencia and Lost Reef in Riversdale have already been the lucky recipients of turtle tracks and possible nesting sites.

The 16 annual Placencia Lobsterfest was another great time full of delicious food and great entertainment for friends and family from Belize and abroad. The event organized by the Placencia Village Council and the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association, and held on the properties of Tipsy Tuna and the Godfrey Family, was another success for the community raising funds for both organizations and generating income for businesses across the Peninsula. th

Weather was on the event’s side throughout the entire weekend, and volunteers were busy popping out the ice cold Belikin beers at the Placencia Village Council Belikin Bar.

Placencia Tour Guides Share Stories of Whale Shark Encounters We’d like to think that lucky divers and snorkelers who went on whale shark trips this year are still digesting all the excitement. This has been a great season for sightings, and stories of magical encounters with the majestic sea creatures continue to be shared on the Peninsula. This past May, tour guides working with Splash Dive Center took time to tell us a few of their experiences. Twenty-one-year-old Marvin Escobar, originally from Bella Vista Village just became a licensed tour guide in September 2013 and began working with Splash in March. Not long after taking his first job as a tour guide, he spotted his first whale shark while leading a snorkeling trip at the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve. “A guide aboard another Splash boat alerted my team to a sighting, and we quickly went into the water. It was very beautiful – about 20 feet – and while it only lasted about 30 seconds, it was a very special moment for me.”

whether or not we should share his story with you, so you don’t feel too bad. Ready for it? … Westby has had about 55 encounters throughout his guiding experience which started at 18 years old. In fact, in 2006, he and a group of 10 other divers saw a DOZEN sharks in one encounter at Gladden Spit! “That was my best year ever. We still learn new things about them like the depth they travel to, the areas they roam, the birthing process,” said Westby. “I was ecstatic and overwhelmed when I saw my first whale shark, and I still feel the same way when I see one now – nothing has changed.”

Experts considered the steady breeze and moderately challenging waves this year to be perfect conditions for a regatta. “The conditions were super,” said Founding Member of the Belize Sailing Association John Oliver. In addition to the excellent weather, Oliver also found the location in Placencia and easy accessibility to the beach, as well as a great spot by the point to launch the boats, to be other contributions to a successful event. Turtle Inn Trains Staff in Rescue Diving Following Tragic Drowning Accident in Village By Martin Krediet Turtle Inn General Manager martin@turtleinn.com

The unfortunate drowning of a young local man in front of our neighboring property ‘Finca’ a couple of months ago prompted me to take the overall rescue knowledge of my staff to the next level. Don’t get me wrong. They did everything they could to try and save this man’s life, but it simply was not in his cards … Our staff responded by the numbers – quickly and efficiently and with dedication. Tony Pinder of Belize Fit (Tony’s Gym) who happened to be paddle boarding in the area went above and beyond to assist the man. Tony is a true local hero for his efforts to try and revive the victim. 2014 Placencia Lobsterfest Continued from page front page. Some people even took the time to enjoy the World Cup games at the Old Master rum tent with the perfect backdrop of frothy waves splashing in the background. And of course, with over 20 food booths at the event, this year’s Lobsterfest offered an impressive variety of dishes that people will continue to talk about until next year’s celebration. The Food: Local business owners like Karen and Tuka Young and Tricia Hernandez kept lobsters on the grill all weekend long and so did Chelo Sierra and his sons, Omar and Grayson who also offered colorful lobster kebobs. Wendy Lemus and her team dished out lobster quesadillas, lobster ceviche and lobster nachos while the Placencia Hotel surprised everyone with tasty lobster coconut pies and chocolate bacon lobster cupcakes! Nick Pollard and his crew of The Galley Restaurant continued the Berry tradition of lobster pies and lobster pizzas. Siripohn offered delicious healthy alternatives such as fresh lobster summer rolls and her savory Thai lobster curry dishes, and Sheldon Lopez was the man for the carnivores again adding a wider selection of meats to his grill this year. Dawn of Grill n Go served up her famous lobster fajitas and Cleeve Westby of Fantoni’s Kitchen pleased chowder fans with his lobster special as well as his popular home baked breads. There was a lot more cooking too at Joes BBQ, Papa Dena’s, Ms. Barbara’s, Pam’s Food Fest and also more delicious pizza baking on site by the Yoli’s team visiting from Cayo.

Following last year’s routine of another stellar village parade and a rendition of the Belize National Anthem equally excellent to that of last year’s invitees, the Corozal Community College Marching Band, young members of the BVMB kicked off a high energy performance right on the shore decked out in rasta themed beach wear. Lionfish Tournament: While BMVB’s beach performance, which covered a range of popular artists from Bob Marley to Rihanna, was the highlight for most Lobsterfest fans, the entertainment schedule was packed with something special for everyone. It all started on Friday with the 10th annual Lionfish Slayers Tournament. All three participating teams removed a total of 1,060 of the predatory invasive species from the waters of southern Belize. The Placencia Fishermen’s Cooperative won the first place prize of $1,500 for most lionfish, as well as second place of $800 for the largest lionfish. The Splash

Dive Center Green Team captured the third place prize of $500 for the smallest lionfish. Turtle Inn, a resort committed to healthy environmental practices, also contributed their lionfish eradication efforts to the tournament. The event received generous support this year from OCEANA Belize who donated all cash prizes and was coordinated by the Southern Environmental Association with assistance from Blue Ventures. Members of all organizations worked throughout the weekend at their booths to promote marine conservation education, as well as tips on how to properly prepare lionfish for good eating. Students in a growth-mindset school are encouraged to be enthusiastic, hard-working, and persistent learners who take charge of their own success. In February of 2013, April Peterson met Ms. Lucas just as the school was being developed. Ms. Peterson, a teacher with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with an emphasis on special education and primary education, had previously worked with a diverse population of students, including students with emotional impairments, learning disabilities, autism, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). After listening to Ms. Lucas’ mission for creating a new school, Ms. Peterson says, “ I fell in love with the idea of creating a school where students would have individualized instruction (teacher to student ratio of 1:15), differentiated instruction, positive behavior supports, and a creative, hands-on blended curriculum.” Further, Ms. Peterson stated, “Teaching is my passion,” adding that Ms. Lucas’ enthusiasm was contagious, and “after listening to her mission, I jumped on board quickly!”

Along with its physical growth, the school has been gradually building a network of support within the community, including parents of students and local business leaders. According to Ms. Lucas, a few people who have provided instrumental support for the school’s growth include Ben Mason of Belize Ocean Club, Frik and Ilse DeMayere, Paul Habib, Pamela Solomon, Ramona Segenespick, and Gilles Gayot, among others. The Academy has also benefitted from a sister school in Lilburn, Georgia, the “Legacy of Purpose Preparatory Academy,” founded by Tarece Johnson, which Ms. Lucas states, “allows for collaboration and continued growth Students look at specimens in science class. Since PIA’s inception in 2013, Ms. Lucas and Ms. Peterson have been joined by Joan Augustine as primary classroom teacher, Severine Aragon as early childhood teacher, Kirwin Ramirez as physical education instructor, and Lynn Upham as an art instructor. Volunteers Give St. John’s Primary Aesthetic Upgrade St. John’s Anglican Memorial Primary School has become a new visual attraction in Placencia Village. Thanks to young volunteers from Aldergrove Community Secondary School in Canada and arrangements made by the Belize Anglican Church and Reto Juvenil Internacional, a community service organization based in Costa Rica that coordinates projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, the school now displays its first big exterior artistic undertaking. According to school principal, Stephen Whyte, St. John’s was recommended for the project by the national manager of Anglican Schools in Belize. The primary school, formerly an austere, dull-colored concrete structure now boasts colorful, creative and educational messages on its outside walls. The art project utilized recycled materials and was completed in two weeks in March. Principal Whyte assisted with the concept of the artwork which showcases Belize’s National Symbols and also messages promoting civic pride and empowerment.

The team recruited by Reto Juvenil Internacional consisted of 30 volunteers and five teachers from Aldergrove Community Secondary School in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. They also took time to hold a workshop on Health, Family and Leadership for students from Standard two to five. (We also caught them in their off time enjoy-

ing gelato at Tuttifrutti!) Whyte who has been working tirelessly to make improvements in all areas at St. John’s was very pleased with the work. “I feel happy, especially when I see smiles on the children’s faces. I also felt great to return to school after the Easter vacation and see that nothing was

destroyed. It shows that they appreciate the project.” Ed. Note: There have been several other enhancement projects and initiatives completed over the summer at St. John’s, and we will be updating you more on those in our next issue! ▪

Young Rembrandts Transform Ugly Container Into Art By Martin Krediet Turtle Inn General Manager martin@turtleinn.com

There is a large 40-foot container that sits in the parking lot by Turtle Inn. It was kind of an eyesore and many people would ask me why we had it there. I would have to explain that it is actually a very important trailer that will help us with hurricane evacuations and allow us to transport valuables from our rooms to a safe place. But there was no denying that it was in need of a dire makeover. Coming to our rescue on July 3 were nine up and coming artists from the Peninsula who have now made that unsightly trailer a beautiful attraction on our premises! The young Van Goghs and Rembrandts were all given a mustache to wear since all famous master painters donned one. They quickly started outlining their art work and with a fully concentrated effort from all, they filled in their sections with colors. A few clean ups had to be administered – not only on the canvas, but also from faces, hands and arms – but we were sure to thoroughly wash hands before sitting down for a pizza party at Ristorante Mare after the master pieces were completed followed by cool dessert at the gelato bar. I want to thank Kajah & Kazandra Berrie, Leandra Lemus, Sasha Lopez, Kaylin Moterroso, Delaine Lozano, Brett Leslie, Tristan Sutherland, Aidan Peterson and Stephen Lopez for their great works. I also want to thank Carlos Cante and Stephanie Donis-Chew along with Walter Vasquez and Hector Mendez for assisting with the set up! ▪ Right Above: Youth from Placencia Village paint Turtle Inn’s emergency container in parking lot donning silly mustaches. Dressed in elegant beachwear, attendees reclined on beach chairs and sipped on cocktails as they enjoyed the festival’s launching film, “Kingston Paradise,” which was set against a natural backdrop of crashing waves. But just before they debated amongst themselves how much they liked or disliked the 83-minute Jamaican film about a street hustler’s foray into car theft and his lady friend’s dream of peace through a painting, popular Belizean singer Melonie Gillett delivered Robert’s Grove business partners, Michael Kramer, Jean Marc Tasse and Boris Mannsfeld being interviewed at a mesmerizing performance of her the opening gala. Placencia Scholar Graduates from University of Peace in Costa Rica By Loretta Logan lorettalogan20@yahoo.com

Editor’s Note: Twenty-five-year-old Loretta Logan, a native of Independence Village now calls Placencia Village home. She is the fiancee of Placencia artist, Omar’s Diner cook and Southern Environmental Association Education and Outreach Officer Omar Sierra. Logan will be teaching the Early Childhood Education class at Peninsula International Academy when school reopens in September. Upon learning the news that she had graduated from the prestigious University of Peace in Costa Rica in May, we asked her to share her inspirational story.

May 23, 2014 will always be marked as a milestone date throughout my life history and any other future accomplishments. Obtaining a Master’s Degree in Environment, Development and Peace with specialization in Sustainable Natural Resources Management from the United Nations Mandated University for Peace is still a dream. Being a student at UPeace, nestled in the beautiful primary rainforest of Costa Rica, the perfect place to study natural resources management, and to be immersed in an international hub of global cultures, world views and life stories. This reassures me that heroes, leaders and good people do exist in the world from 50 different countries, this in itself is perhaps the best experience I’ve ever had in academia, in addition to meeting the Liberian and Costa Rican women Presidents. The journey towards obtaining this master degree is a bit unbelievable and funny for some. UPeace was strongly recommended by one of my previous lecturers from the University of Belize, Mrs. Cecy Castillo. She sent the University information the first time, and I

thought that it was out of my reach, so she resent the application mail for me a second time and I finally decided to apply. Later I applied for the Organization of American States (OAS) scholarship to UPeace, which was attached as an option in the acceptance letter. By the time I got all the required government approved documents, I managed to apply on the last day of the scholarship application deadline, only to be disappointed and frustrated when the website was not uploading my files, eventually I decided to email the contact information on the website explaining my difficulties with the malfunctioning webpage. Crossing my fingers I hoped that they would respond. Two days after the deadline they responded, stating that they will open the deadline for another 48 hours for me to compensate for their malfunctioned webpage at the moment. You can call it a miracle or you can call it faith, a week later I received 50% scholarship; in less than 24 hours I received another mail stating I receive 75% tuition scholarship instead of the 50%. I turned down the offer, since my initial application hope and need was for a 100% scholarship. After emailing the University and the OAS personnel I got an email and a phone call stating that UPeace will provide the additional 25%, making it a 100% scholarship, which all happened only four days before classes were scheduled to start.

Loretta Logan is only the second Belizean to have ever graduated from the United Nations mandated university. (OMAR SIERRA)

Inspector Flowers and Natalia Bevans are also planning to hold a second training for the officers focusing on child abuse and neglect – another growing area of concern on the Peninsula. There are no outlets available for victims of domestic violence on the Placencia Peninsula. According to Bevans, the Committee Against Gender-Based Violence is expecting to receive funding from United Nations agencies that will help to implement programs in areas of need. Reports of domestic violence to police officers are crucial in determining the need for these programs, Bevans explained. The magistrate also reminds the public that in most cases, children suffer immensely from being exposed to incidents of domestic violence. “They grow up thinking that it is okay, and the cycle continues. We need to break that cycle,” Bevans said.▪
