Whale Sharks, the Sea and the Cayes April is one of the best months in Belize to snorkel and dive. The water is warm and clear, the sun shines bright and the whale sharks are visiting. One of the favourite destinations is the Silk Cayes and Gladden Spit Marine Reserve.
The Silks Cayes are three small cayes: North Silk, Middle Silk and South Silk and are located about 22 miles from Placencia and managed by Southern Environmental Association (SEA) who are a non governmental organization.

As the Executive Director of The Marine Foundation I was delighted to have been invited by a group of Dangriga fishermen to create and install an underwater sculpture in Belize. I have installed a number of sculptures in Asia but this would be my first in the Caribbean. News about the environment is often so depressing and negative I established The Marine Foundation in 2009 with a purpose to engage community members and create positive stories through science and art. I was quickly introduced to Roberts Grove Beach Resort who became my partner sponsor and through collaboration with Southern Environmental Association (SEA), Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve was chosen as the installation location. Having snorkeled around the caye and seen the vibrant marine life, I feel happy that she has such a wonderful home and can add to the underwater experience for visitors to Silk Cayes. The sculpture represents an ancient global feminine symbol for nurturing life and protection. A fun, interactive attraction for visitors, the installation is also a tool for education and discussion around environmental issues. It was an amazing team effort and I am hugely grateful to Thunderbirds

The class meets for 12 weeks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6PM – 9PM in the S.E.A. conference room above Scotia Bank. Field trips into the jungle, the cayes, and Mayan ruins will be scheduled on 3 separate Sundays. Course fees include a $300 registration fee (due with the completed application), and $50 for each of 7 exams (due just prior to each exam). Veteran tour guide trainer David Vernon teaches the course, enhancing the curriculum with his insight, humor and anecdotes from his experience as a tour guide. It Takes a Peninsula
The Annual Flaming Heart Ball is a fundraiser for the Placencia Volunteer Fire Department. All proceeds help support daily operations of volunteer and national fire service on the peninsula. The 2016 fundraiser was the 9th annual and a huge success. Amazing food from local restaurants and cooks, music by local talented musicians and a raffle with great prizes. Headed by Kathy Anglin and hosted by Tipsy Tuna, it could not happen without the dozens of volunteers. A big thank you to all the sponsors and everyone who supported this event. Lola’s Art turns 26 on April Fools Day By Francis Alexander Rudon
In 1990 there was no electricity, no running water and only a community phone in Seine Bight Village. Miss Lola, accompanied by her mother and young daughter, came on vacation but never left. The rest of her family declared her a madwoman and a fool when she told them she would not be returning to Belize City. What? And give up hot water, phone service and cable TV?!? Nevertheless, on April 1st of that year (and you can figure out why she chose that date!) she opened the first art gallery on the Placencia Peninsula. She started with hand painted notecards and a small table filled with key hangers, napkin holders, coconut barrettes and bracelets and a few small canvases.

Rotary Club of Placencia By Wanda Stakutis WHEELCHAIRS One of the on-going projects for the Rotarian Clubs all over Belize is supplying wheelchairs to those in need. For the past 6 months there have been no chairs available but finally on March 4 there was a new container of chairs delivered, thanks to several clubs in the US and Canada and coordinated by the Belize City Rotary Club. Our club received 5 chairs and 3 were handed out by Rotarians Bill and Ron. Many thanks to all who made this effort possible. We are expecting another delivery of chairs this fall. Meanwhile, we still have two children’s size chairs available to anyone in need

Placencia Police Community Project By Claudius Cardinez
In the recent past, we’ve reported on several occasions of the many drugs found in bushy abandoned lots in Placencia Village. On Wednesday 16th March 2016 the Placencia Police Sub-Formation’s Community Policing Unit, led a clean-up campaign in Placencia Village to clear one of these abandoned lots known for drug activity. A team of police officers from Placencia, assisted by the Placencia Village Council, Placencia Fire Department, members of the Belmopan Community Oriented Policing Program led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Gerald
Jones and a few residents of Placencia Village took part in the clean-up. The officers and their volunteers swung machetes and collected debris from the dense 2 acre abandoned property south of the village. The exercise, is one of many initiates adopted by the Community Policing Unit on the peninsula that seeks to strengthen the relationship between the police and the community through partnership on projects such as this. The cleaning of the abandoned property will definitely reduce the drug activity in that area which translates to a safer peninsula.

A Fish Tale
Placencia, a fishing village first. A fishing village always. But fish here is a little more exotic, a little more interesting than you might be used to. Let’s try Fishing 101. Growing up on the west coast of California, fish meant filet of sole on Friday night, later maybe salmon or trout from fresh water streams, certainly Dungeness crab during the season. You east coasters can relate, just substitute salmon for cod, crab for Maine lobster, but still sole everywhere. Certainly, in these global economy days, many different kinds of fish are available at the supermarket seafood counter… but then there are the fish opportunities that abound in Placencia. A whole different kettle of you know what.
Local Boys and Girls Make Good
One Fish, Two fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish Eating (and snorkel views) of fish in the Caribbean are just so darn more colorful. Consider the blue Grouper or the red Snapper. And then there are the unfamiliar, evocative names…Black Dinah, Wahoo, and Jew Fish. From my point of view, “colorful” names like Ole Wife (Queen Trigger fish), Jimmy Hine (Strawberry Grouper) and Black Ass (Rock Hine) are right up there on the color chart. Don’t forget Susie Moss (Black Durgon), and Jull (Warsaw Grouper). These can appear on blackboards as Fresh Catch all the time. Trust in the preparer, it’s gonna be fresh and it’s gonna be delicious. The more ubiquitous Barracuda is on many menus…. the first time I had it, the bones kind of turned me off and then…. the AH HA Moment. Catch your own, have your captain filet them,
So, if you don’t have a best friend with a kitchen to cook up some wonderful bounty of our sea, where do you turn? From my point of view, you start with the second (or maybe third) generation of Placencians, those dedicated to fresh and flavor. Omar’s Creole Grub, Nick’s at The Galley, De ‘Tatch…you can’t go wrong. For a slightly more gourmet twist, try Mojo’s catch of the day or see what’s cooking at Maya Beach Bistro. No matter where you dine to hear your Fish Tale in Placencia, it will be succulent, fresh, and why Placencia was a fishing village then, now, and always. Fish… it’s what’s for dinner!

Crocodile Research Coalition Mission Statement To promote conservation of crocodiles and their habitats throughout Central America through community involvement, research, and education. Note from Dr. Marisa Tellez-Kohlman We plan to perform research in Placencia, examining the interaction of crocs with their environment and other wildlife, and how human alterations are affecting behavior, diet, health, and biodiversity of the local environment, as well as the crocodiles and other wildlife. From this knowledge, we intend to assist in wildlife management and build on eco-tourism ventures that will incorporate the local community, in particular students.
The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) is a Belize-based nonprofit that seeks to conserve crocodiles, their habitat, and adjacent wildlife throughout Central America through research, education, and most importantly, community involvement. We believe that community involvement is the cornerstone to the success of conservation of crocodilians and their habitat, and intend to work alongside with local communities in all faucets of research and education. The CRC was established early
2016 by Dr. Marisa Tellez and Karl Kohlman. Dr. Marisa Tellez has been working with crocodilians for 10 years, and is the ViceRegional Chair of Latin America for the International Union for Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission- Crocodile Specialist Group (IUCN/SSCCSG). She has been pursuing research in Belize since 2008, examining the biodiversity and health of wildlife within crocodilian habitat on Ambergris Caye the last couple of years.
