Peninsula Kicks Off Holiday Season With Mistletoe Ball! It’s soon time to start the holiday season in style at the 15th Annual Placencia Mistletoe Ball. The most glamorous event of the year on the Placencia Peninsula, and the biggest holiday event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13 and will be hosted once again by the Belize Ocean Club resort located in the Maya Beach community of north Seine Bight Village.

Organizers with the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (PBTIA) are excited about this year’s grand affair and have been busy preparing to outdo its predecessors. This is the Belize Ocean Club’s second year hosting the event. In 2013, the resort celebrated its grand Continued on page 11

Tipsy’s Major Renovation Offers More to Customers As a growing tourism market continues to drive healthy competition, each year businesses on the Peninsula make improvements in preparation for the North American winter holidays with paint jobs, repairs and making new additions. This past summer the Tipsy Tuna appeared to have made the largest investment in both physical and human resources in their efforts to stand out among their comrades in the local bar and

entertainment scene. While closed for two months, the popular beach hangout spot received a complete overhaul to its kitchen, an extension to its lower beach deck, a much talked about new upper lookout deck offering an incredible view of Placencia Cove and a full paint job on just about everything on the premises. Coral Reef Restoration Success Shared with Southern Leaders By William Ysaguirre Contributing Writer williamgysaguirre@gmail.com

Belize’s primary tourist attraction, the Meso-American Barrier Reef System (MBRS), is threatened by Climate Change through rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and ocean acidification, but Lisa Carne’s “Fragments of Hope” has had remarkable success in transplanting 11,000 living coral fragments of species resistant to bleaching. They showed a 95 percent survival rate over the first 22 months, at new locations at the Laughing Bird Caye National Park, located just 11 miles away from Placencia Village. The coral reef is equally important to Belize’s fisheries industry, so community leaders from Hopkins, Seine Bight, Monkey River, Barranco, Punta Negra and Placencia gathered to learn more about how Carne’s initiative is helping to protect the long term survival of the reef, at a workshop hosted by the Fragments of Hope in Placencia from Wednesday to Friday, October 29-31. The European Union funded the workshop, which the National Climate Change Office organized in collaboration the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) and Fragments of Hope (FoH), and implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Lisa Carne came to Belize some 20 years ago to work as a PADI certified dive instructor and dive tour operator, but became saddened and alarmed by the gradual deterioration and coral bleaching events she observed out on the reef and decided to do something about it. Shrugging off the warnings of many nay-sayers who said it couldn’t be done, she began an experiment eight years ago in transplanting fragments of staghorn coral, locally known as “pipe-shenk”, and elkhorn coral.

Thriving transplanted coral attracts marine life during the night at Fragments of Hope restoration site at Laughingbird Caye. (LOUIE WRAY)

Just as other reef scientists have come to recognize the importance of the parrot fish as key to reef health by keeping algae cover in check to prevent it from smothering the tiny coral polyps, so too Carne recognized the importance of having a complete healthy eco-system where all the players are present in their usual numbers, undisturbed by man’s harvesting. This is why she chose Laughing Bird Caye as the site for her experiment, since as a national park and World Heritage Site, it is a no-take zone where no fishing is allowed. The site had been ravaged by hurricanes and bleaching events, and was ideal as a case study in coral reef restoration. Carne found the funding for her work and chose the Acropora species, which has been shown to be resilient to changes to warmer water temperatures. It is also one of the faster growing corals with a normal growth rate of 6.9 centimetres per year; Carne’s transplanted

Family and Friends Celebrate “Dadda’s” 90th Birthday

Dadda, who was a founding member of the Placencia Fishermen’s Cooperative, was honored with one of the biggest and most impressive birthday parties Placencia Village has seen in years. (MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHY)

It is not often that village elders in Placencia make it past their 70s so when Clarence “Dadda” Lopez hit 90, his family threw a big birthday party that rivals the Peninsula’s major festivals. Friends and relatives of almost all the long-standing Placencia Village families were in attendance and the party was complete with live performances, special dedications, a fully stocked bar, delicious lcoal Creole food and a loud and colourful fireworks display.

plant. In his early days, he fished from his sailing canoe and moved on to sailing boats, using the stars, the sun and the knowledge of his ancestors as his compass. At this time, he and other fishermen sailed to Belize City and purchased ice to keep their product cool in Placencia. Fishing and seasonal catching of lobster and conch was the only source of income for the families of Placencia up until the late 1980s when tourism began to develop as a local industry.

Lopez and other fishermen also traveled to Nicaragua or Puerto Cortes in Honduras to sell their product. Jobs were also provided to younger women who packaged the produce on shipment day. The coop was also responsible for providing the electricity of the homes using their generator. Prior to this amenity, villages used gas lamps for light.

Tipsy Tuna’s New Renovations Continued from front page fans who have visited the beach bar during crowded events will also take note of a lot more counter space for dining and drinking. And rain should no longer be a problem during live outdoor shows and screenings with the new roof extension over the stage area. But perhaps more impressive than its physical enhancements is Tipsy’s newly invigorated staff. “We’re a lot more motivated. We have better teamwork and communication, and we are all determined to provide the best service to our customers,” said Danny who is serving his third season as a bartender. In October, Danny and other Tipsy staff were able to complete a two-week bartending course facilitated by the San Pedro-based Belize Mixology Institute – one of the newest members of the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association. The session was led by Instructor Luis Velasquez who was certified at the American Bartending School of Florida.

First Female Sailing Champion Wins Title in Placencia (PRESS RELEASE) Belize Sailing Association, belizesailingassociation@gmail.com

With light winds on her side and revealing that she is a skillful tactician to contend with, 14-yearold Blanca Velasquez of San Pedro Junior Sailing Club (SPJSC), emerged as the new National Optimist Champion in Belize. After two days of six races November 8 and 9 and coping with 3-6 knot winds, the field of 15 racers that qualified to compete for the nationals tried every trick in the book to get underway. Blanca consistently took either 1st or 2ndplace, slipping to third once in the last race of the regatta. This was enough for her to cruise into 1st place overall.

Volunteer Medical Team Provides Free Services on Peninsula Karim “Low” Peters, a local construction worker was having a rough week. An abscess and broken tooth was causing him a great deal of pain and made almost the entire side of his face swell up into a big baseball. The local clinic prescribed him some antibiotics to address his infection, but advised him to see a dentist. It was just his luck as a group of volunteer dentists were providing services at the village church that week, and Peters was able to get all the care he needed for free. The program is called the Belize Mission Project and is headed by an orthodontist of Illinois in the United States named Dr. Frank Whipps. Starting in 1993, this was Whipps 22nd mission to Belize, and this year he brought over 88 dental specialists, nurses and volunteers to treat close to 10,000 patients in both rural and urban areas across the country during October and November.

During three full days in November, his team with the assistance of local medical professionals serving on the Peninsula treated a very diverse set of patients at the Lighthouse Worship Center in Placencia Village and at the Lighthouse Church in Seine Bight Village. “Everybody mih good,” said Peters a week following his treatment at the Lighthouse Worship Center. “I feel 100 percent better. I really can’t complain.” Whipps describes his program as a nondenominational project that follows Judeo-Christian beliefs. While his program addresses the physical needs of patients, his purpose is also to serve the spiritual needs of his volunteers. Although professionals participating in the Belize Mission Project practice medicine and dentistry in a “Christian” way, Whips maintains on his website that his teams Financial considerations for the Belize Mission Project including costs to volunteers and actual trip costs amount do not evangelize during their mis- to an estimated total of BZ$800,000 for two weeks of service. SEA Takes School Children Out to Clean Their Beach Responding to an overwhelming presence of litter the waves brought in to the beach in Placencia Village in October, the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) organized a second beach cleanup in addition to their annual summer event.

Collaborating with St. John’s Memorial Anglican Primary School and the new Peninsula International Academy, SEA staff, along with school staff and over 100 primary school students, took to the shore to pick up trash. Styrofoam gargbage was the highest concentration of litter collected along the beach along with plastic forks and knives, bottle caps and pieces of plastic. The teams spent almost two hours on shore spanning the stretch from the Municipal Pier up to Cozy Corner Hotel and Retaurant. SEA’s efforts to collect trash drifting into the coastline was coupled with the Placencia Village Council’s routine morning beach cleanups. According to SEA officials, the trash appeared to be even greater than it really was due

to a large presence of sargassum that had been drifting in to shore at many different sites within the Caribbean.▪

Letter from Placencia Humane Society’s New Chairman David Kafka Hello, For those of you who have not met me yet, I am David Kafka the current Chairman of the Placencia Humane Society (PHS). Doran Yount stepped down to spend more time and energy on other matters within the organization, which I will discuss in this letter. I want to thank all the past and present board members who have gotten us where we are today. I want to express my deepest thanks for the much needed support we get from all of you out there. The resorts who host the vet every month, both the monetary and inkind donations we get at the various businesses for supplies, the volunteers who help at the clinics and fundraisers, the members of PHS and those of you who try to care for animals in the proper way -- many thanks.

David Kafka (left) has succeeded Doran Yount (above) as PHS Chairman.

the Humane Society of the United States invited him to their “Animal Expo 2014 in Daytona Beach, Florida.” Both trips were completely funded by HSUS.

World Vets and Helping Paws Across Borders. Other organizations in the US have also come and As PHS Chairman, I would like offered free services. And more to welcome all who have moved here. For all who may or may not be familiar with what PHS is all about, I will start by giving you a brief description of our mission. PHS is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that runs solely on donations, memberships from the community, PHS memorabilia for sale, and a few fundraisers we have during the course of the year. We on the board and the many volunteers each month help those little ones that can’t speak or help themselves; yes the animals on the Placencia Peninsula. Have you ever wondered what PHS does? So far this year we have spayed and neutered over 80 pets and over 125 feral cats. PHS is one of the very few humane societies in Belize that does no-cost spays and neuters for the pet along with low cost clinics. We have a very successful feral cat program where we trap the feral cats, spay or neuter them, inoculate them, and then put them back out in the area where they were captured. We help educate one and all but, most especially, the children in the villages on the proper care and treatment of animals. We have a lot of people watching us; Doran was invited to attend a couple of seminars in Trinidad and Miami. The first invitation came from Humane Society International asking Doran to attend the “Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference 2013” in Trinidad. Then

recently, Helping Paws Across Volunteers and Borders visited again, holding two Donations Welcomed: day clinics in both Santa Cruz and To help, contact us: Seine Bight Villages. We cannot continue to do this without your support and help; without the donations and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please call the PHS at the numbers listed.

Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 523-3185 or 604-8676 Or, contact us on our Facebook page: Placencia Humane Society.

Hello, My name…. Well now I am called Mini. Cannot recall if I used to have a name but I am sure my name is Mini now! The person I used to be with had me taken to the Helping Paws Across Borders clinic when they were in Seine Bight in Oct of 2014. All I know is they were going to have me cut so I could not have babies and get me my shots. It was really scary as I did not know what was going on. It turned out to be a very lucky day for me. I was one of 5 dogs that came in that day and well overall health wise, one of the worst. I have Demodectic mange also known as puppy mange, skin fungus, malnourished and my over all health was not too good. The kind people from Helping Paws Across Borders and the volunteers from the Placencia Humane Society were so worried about me. I am not used to all that kind of attention I just wanted to go curl up in a corner somewhere. They kept petting me as easy as they could as my skin is so thin it would easily tear. This one wonderful lady decided I was going to go home with her to get better. I did not know what that meant at the time. Well being in a new place at first is scary and I really did not know if I should stay or not. For the first couple of weeks I had to be tied up so I would not get out of the fenced yard. Around then the lady who has been taking great care of me, even getting up in the middle of the night to feed me, started seeing new hair come in and took some pictures of me. Then I decided I like it here a lot so I would not leave and now I have this whole huge yard to explore whenever I want to, a bit later more hair and more pics. I still have a couple spots that needs a bit of extra TLC but almost all better. I have been hearing that there are not many people out there that will help a doggie like me to get better, that makes me sad. As dogs like Finn and Hyena, you will hear their stories soon, need a place and person themselves to help them get better. Helping Paws Across Borders and their donors started my road to recovery and then the Placencia Humane Society and their donors and wonderful volunteers took me in and walked me further down the road of recovery. Soon I am hoping to have a person or family for my very own. I want to take his time to thank everyone out there who helped make it possible for me to dream of a different life . A dream of a healthy life with enough food, clean water and a bed of my own. Remember if you cannot do the big things every little thing done adds up to one huge thing that you can be a part of. If you can donate a $1 or more or take time to stop by and say hello to one of us in need or to take me or another of us for a walk. It may not be much to you but it is a huge thing in our lives. That one dollar can go to help by the medicines I need or can be combined with another's dollar to get a can of food. The attention we receive be it a walk or just spending 5 minutes saying hello, lets us know that there are good people out there. I hope to see you soon! STUDENT OF THE

MONTH The Placencia BTIA started the Student of the Month program to celebrate hard work among primary school students on the Placencia Peninsula. The program recognizes one child from each classroom of the respective participating primary school/s. The students’ names are compiled by the teachers of each class. A child may be recognized by the following: Academic Achievement, Good Behavior, Being Helpful to Others, Improved Grades or Behavior, Standing out Among Their Peers or any other reason the teacher may deem worthy. The Placencia BTIA produces a Certificate of Recognition for each student. The certificate is signed by the principal of the school, teacher of the classroom and the Placencia BTIA’s Business Manager. During presentations of these awards, students are called up one by one in front of the entire school to receive their certificate. Teachers often make it a bit of a mystery, giving clues at the assembly. It makes it exciting for students to guess the name of their classmate being awarded. The student recognition program brings awareness within the classroom and in the entire school to motivate other students to work hard and receive such recognition. Seine Bight Track Star Motivates Children at Summer Camp Just a few days after competing in the Commonwealth Games held in Scotland this summer, Belize’s track and field star Kaina Martinez returned to her native Seine Bight Village for her third Children’s Track and Field Summer Camp Games held in August. Even with volunteer and sponsorship support Kaina had her hands very full at the event. She was coach, motivator, organizer, coordinator and referee to over 100 children from the village. Never stopping for a break, Kaina strived to give each child personal attention. At the end of one sprint, Kaina took time to give one discouraged child a pep talk. “You are already a winner. You are not at home doing nothing like some other kids this weekend. You are out here. That makes you a winner. It doesn’t matter if you come in first or second.” For many of the children of different age ranges participating in the camp, Kaina is just a girl who “likes to run.” Only a few knew Girls and boys of different age groups competed in the weekend’s games. (MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHY) about her regional and international representation for track and field. Olympics? Some had never heard of it. When asked what he knew about Kaina, one child responded, “Kaina like to mek wih workout. (Kaina likes to make us workout.)” And others said they believe they can run just as fast as her one day. For the organizer, making the children believe in themselves was all she wanted. Kaina thanks everyone who contributed to her event including time, educational prizes and food and water. “I extend our big thank you for making this event possible and once again putting smiles on the faces of all our children that attended. It was yet another wonderful event and you have played an important role … On behalf of the kids, volunteers and organizers of the event we just want you to know we are so thankful.” Kaina is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Texas A&M University on a full athletic scholarship. The accomplished athlete is also an Officer Cadet in the Belize Coast Guard. Want to assist Kaina with next year’s event? Contact KMTrackandFieldGames@gmail.com.▪
