Martha Eiley is Pickled Parrot Chili Cook-off Champion! Martha Eiley knows how to make good chili! She placed first out of a record-breaking 18 entries submitted to this year’s Pickled Parrot Chili Cook-off – a fundraiser for the Placencia Assassins football team. The home-cook told guests at the event that she hadn’t planned on entering the cook-off, but was encouraged by her husband Glenn Eiley who said he loves her chili. Judges Charo Westby, Lola Delgado and Big Al loved it too. Each entry, identified only by number, was available for tasting by paying guests who waited in long lines. Eiley’s pot was one of the first to finish. Placing second was Brenda of Brenda’s Caribbean Cooking, third: Resident Retiree Cindy Weller, fourth: Dawn Berry-Pollard of Dawn’s Grill ‘n’ Go and fifth: Jerry Winters. According to Pickled Parrot Co-owner Wende Bryan, this was their largest chili cook-off yet. The party rocked from 4 p.m. until closing time late in the night with the chili-eating crowd dancing away to live music by resident and visiting musicians: Steven Fasano, Mark Finnegan, Mitch Thorndike, Beau, Graham Berrie and Emmeth Young.

U.S. Soldier and Girlfriend Reunite in Placencia

I

n April 2011, 30-year-old paralegal Shelby Duncan learned that her boyfriend would be deployed to Kuwait for 13 months. It would be a long time apart for the North Carolina couple who had been inseparable since they started dating in June 2009. Before Bryan Anderson, a 36-year-old mechanic with the United States National Guard set off for his mission, he and his girlfriend had decided to plan a special meeting in the tropics at the end of his deployment. While most soldiers reunite with loved ones and families at home, Shelby and Bryan wanted to celebrate their reunion in a place far away from North Carolina with plenty of time to spend with each other.

Dylan Bernard

Shelby Duncan and Bryan Anderson enjoyed Easter festivities in Placencia and much more.

The two had their eyes set on St. Lucia. But while Bryan was on his high-level threat mission in the Middle East servicing war tanks, somewhere else showed up on the radar. Please see REUNION IN PLACENCIA on page 21.

Caves Branch Outpost: River Tubing, Ziplining, Waterfalls and an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet in Just One Day

Welcome A Letter From the Editor: A personal look into the life of a tour guide.

By Apolo Caliz Front Desk and Membership Officer, frontdesk@placencia.com On Sunday April 22, 2012 I went on a trip arranged by Placencia’s Caribbean Travel and Tours to the Caves Branch Outpost located on the Belize Road. The tour started at exactly 6 a.m. with a total group of six. During the twohour drive, I found out something very interesting. There are two “Caves Branch” in Belize – the Ian Anderson Caves Branch and the Caves Branch Outpost. Our driver was Mr. Juan Pau, a local tour guide of Placencia Village, and I must say he is very knowledgeable in almost everything Belizean. He pointed out things along the highway that I, as a regular traveler of the Hummingbird Highway, fail to notice; such as, certain trees and flowers that one would believe people have in their yard for simply aesthetic pleasure when in reality, they are medicinal herbs. Upon arriving to the park, we met up with a local tour guide named Luis, a very knowledgeable elderly man.We later found out he was our river tubing guide. However, we were scheduled to do the zip lining tour first; therefore, we made our way to the front desk of the park where we were greeted by two of the most courteous and kind young ladies who showed us the way. At first when I heard the words “zip lining”, I was very scared to try it, but also anxious. The thought of being some 50 to 100 feet off the ground was nerve wrecking. When we got to the zip lining

site, we were greeted by two tour guides named, Selvin and Jeff. We geared up and headed to our first zip line, which was called “Chicken Run.” I personally felt like a chicken and was ready to run away from the zip line! However, I conquered my fear and took my first ride ever on a zip line. Having that adrenaline rush made me forget my fear of heights! It is an awesome experience, and I recommend it to anyone who wants something spontaneous to do any day of the week. The tour guides also made it fun and relaxing as they showed off their professional moves on the zip line. They made our experience one to remember, and they also made each of our seven runs as safe as they could be. At the end of the zip line tour, Amy, a tourist who was in our group, said, “That was awesome!” All I could think was, ‘She took the words right out of my mouth.’ We thanked the guides for a great tour and then moved on to cave tubing. We went back to the welcome center where we met up with Luis who was already waiting for us. So we all went and changed, picked up our tubes and headed to the trail. We saw a lot of interesting plants. Luis was very informative in explaining each plant to us and their medicinal purpose. We saw a Mahogany tree, a sapodilla tree, Xate and pineapple growing in the wild. Please see CAVES BRANCH OUTPOST on page 9.

Of my parents’ four children, I always thought I’d be the first one to land an outdoor job. In high school I had my sights set on becoming a marine biologist, but quickly realized that the sciences weren’t exactly my forté , so I pursued a track in communications instead when I started college. While in school, my three brothers were all working office jobs in Belize, then one day I got the news that my youngest brother Nick decided to trade airconditioned life at the bank for salty air and hot sun. I was jealous. I knew Nick had been having loads of fun with his new life as a tour guide prancing around with his perfectly tanned complexion. He’d come to my mom’s restaurant and rub it in, telling me about the cool marine life he saw that day and his fun tour groups. This was usually after I had finished my rambling about deadlines, etc. It took almost eight months of resettling back home before I finally got a glimpse of what my brother does while I’m in front of the computer. In March, Seahorse Dive Shop invited me and a visiting college friend on a snorkeling trip to the famous Silk Cayes located just 20 miles east of the Peninsula. It had been about 13 years since my last outing to the postcard-perfect islands, and I was ecstatic to share this popular Placencia attraction with my old communication arts buddy. To my surprise, Nick was our tour guide that day! I was so preoccupied with trying to be a good Please see EDITORIAL on page 7.

SPA NEWS: Kristine Small Opens Massage Studio Placencia native Kristine Small said opening her own massage studio is the greatest thing she could have ever done. “Having everything on my time, not feeling rushed, I can give my clients more attention and try to understand their problems and what we can do to correct them,” said Small in her signature soft-spoken and calming voice. Small takes massage seriously and believes it is a healing exercise that requires time. Tree of Life Massage Studio offers Swedish style massage incorporated with reflexology, as well as deep tissue massage for chronic and problem areas. “We found Kris’ gift of touch to be a powerful healing force,” said Amy Lichty, who is a faithful client along with her husband Phillip. “Kris is able to intuitively sense where pressure needs to be applied to release blockages and allow energy flow. She not only has skill, but also the necessary sensitivity to create memorable massages.” Carlton Wattson, owner of Palmetto Bay Condominiums, said he’s a believer in Kristine’s healing talent. Young had suffered a compressed shoulder into his neck and got treated by chiropractors in Mexico, which he said helped a little bit. “I went to her and never had to go back.” Kristine Small was introduced to the art of massage in 1996 by a woman named Carol Christine. Christine, who owned a spa in Key West, Florida, spent time teaching Swedish style massage and reflexology to Small from 1996 to 1998 during her vacations. The Dial sisters who now own Barefoot Bar were Small’s guinea pigs and fought for the privilege. Small also picked up some Chinese techniques from Bob Moor, a former longtime Placencia resident who also introduced her to herbalism, which might explain Small’s penchant for planting fresh flowers in Tree of Life is a proud new member of the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association

carefully thought out places in her studio. With the help of Lee Nyhus, owner of Secret Garden Spa, Small landed her first job as a massage therapist at Robert’s Grove Resort. There, she collected six years of handling back-to-back appointments during the busy high seasons – something that she no longer practices at Tree of Life. “It was overwhelming, but a really, really good experience,” said Small. Sharene Young of British Columbia in Canada who visits Placencia a few times each year recalled her first appointment with Small. “I was in lots of pain and my friends were raving about Kristine Small and Tree of Life, and I thought, ‘What the heck? Give her a try.” Young said she was surprised when she walked into a room filled with flowers, crystals and beautiful music. “After an hour of world class massage therapy, I was in bliss!” Young later introduced two friends – both Doctor of Chiropractic who trained in naturopathic medicine. “They both concur with my two enthusiastic thumbs up!” Kristine Small can be contacted for appointments at 624-5408 and is also available for house calls. Tree of Life opens from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is centrally located in Placencia Village across the main road from MnM Hardware store. ▪

Continued from Page Six. host and taking care of my eyes, which had been badly irritated by my contact lenses, that I completely forgot about the chances of Nick taking us out. Nick confidently welcomed us aboard Seahorse’s “Ambitious”, a medium-sized double engine skiff. There were 13 members in our group, a few of whom were a bit unsure of how they’d handle their goma (hangover) during the trip. Seahorses’ Tour Guide and Scuba instructor Devin and Boat Captain Randy also joined us. They were both chock-full of good humor and had us well-entertained as Ambitious sped over choppy seas. As we approached the beautiful Silk Cayes, surrounded by rings of turquoise water, I felt an enormous sense of pride. I looked over at Dari and was dying for a reaction. I finally understood what my brother and the other guides must feel everyday on the job while sharing their country’s precious jewels with visitors. Please see EDITORIAL on page 14.

Donation of Vehicle Enhances Police Mobility After months with only a single 125cc motorcycle to patrol the 15 miles from Placencia to Riversdale, the Peninsula finally has a police car to call its own. The Isuzu pickup, complete with light bar and siren, is a gift from Don and Vanessa Blunt, residents who divide their time between Las Vegas, Nevada and their new home in Plantation. In a short ceremony at the Placencia Police Station keys to the truck were handed over by Blunt to Station Commander, Sergeant Norman Benguche. Guest speaker for the occasion was Police Commissioner David Henderson who thanked the Blunts and hailed the gesture as the kind of community cooperation that is necessary to keep crime in check. Placencia and Seine Bight village chairmen Charles Leslie Jr. and Francis Palacio responded with thanks on behalf of their respective councils and villagers, citing the donation as a welcome addition but noting that citizens will have to become more involved in keeping the area safe for residents and visitors. The new vehicle is only one element in the new focus on law enforcement on the Peninsula. In June the Commander’s post will be upgraded from sergeant to inspector with the arrival of Inspector Jesus Palma from Benque Viejo. A new office was recently donated for the contingent of Tourism Police and a new mobile police checkpoint should soon follow. Caves Branch Outpost Continued from Page Six. When we entered the first cave, the guide told us, “Welcome to Xibalba,” which means Underworld. Perhaps the thing that captured my attention the most was how pollution-free the national park was – there was not a piece of dirt on the ground. We made our way to the entrance of the fourth cave, and I must say, the river water was cold! However, after a few minutes in the water, your body adjusts to the temperature. We then started to go down the river into the caves. The guide once again said, “Welcome to Xibalba!” I answered, “If this is Hell, I don’t want to leave.” The guide gave us a brief history of the river and the caves and told us how Mayas utilized the caves for sacrifices. We made it out of the fourth cave and into the open where the guide allowed us to take a swim. After that we were ready to go into the third cave where, we saw neat formations. Some resembled a baby camel, an eagle and even the face of a woman. There was also a drawing on the wall that looked like a red snapper. In the middle of the cave we reached a waterfall, which terrified me because in the cave, the waterfall sounded enormous – threatening even. But to my surprise it was a small waterfall that just echoed in the caves. We then exited the caves and river tubed the rest of the tour at a relaxing pace. At the end of the tour, I was hungry, but more than satisfied with both my tours. But my hunger was not left to linger. The buffet at the end of the tour was amazing. We were treated to burgers, spaghetti, rice and beans, stew chicken, pasta salad, potato salad, fruit salad … you get the picture. It’s all you can eat for just $5! I left feeling great about my tour and was full from all the food I ate. I recommend the Caves Branch Outpost to anyone who wants to just take a family outing. Thank you Caribbean Travel and Tours for hooking me up on this unforgettable tour. ▪

Vanya and Chris Tie the Knot

C

hristian Ferrell already had his eyes on Vanya Garcia before sparks ignited between the two at Sunrise Restaurant and Bar in 2001. In all of Placencia, Vanya was the one girl who captured his heart.

wedding two weeks before the Easter holidays and take pride in their hands-on approach to the successful milestone. Vanya crafted her own bouquet and designed her bridesmaid dresses. She and Chris made most of the arrangements.

The two shared an innocent kiss that night, and 11 years and five children later through thick and thin, Christian of Placencia Village and Vanya of Independence Village tied the knot at a small, intimate beach wedding at DeViners Lounge Bar in front of family and close friends.

Relatives, Ms. Cunchie Villanueva and her daughter Annie Faux, gifted the couple a beautiful floral arch for the nuptials and Christian’s Stepmother Laura Godfrey captured the special moments with her lens. Their wedding cake was made by Jacqueline Aldana. Vanya’s close friend and DeViners co-owner Christine Salmon, provided the venue as a gift and assisted with transporting wedding guests to the event.

Vanya was nervous on her big day. “My hands were trembling,” she said. Christian jokingly sought reassurance that she wasn’t about to “punk out.” But the two made it through a touching ceremony and danced the night away together, hardly able to take their hands off each other. Vanya, a pleasant, always-smiling bartender at DeViners and Christian, a strapping boat captain at Moorings Yacht Charter and Sailboat Company decided to take the big step in June 2011. “We both realized that we were ready,” said Vanya. The infectiously loving couple began planning their Christian Ferrell and Vanya Garcia-Ferrell knew they were ready to make a life-long commitment after 11 Photo by Laura Godfrey years together.

The couple’s long-time best friends Abigail Westby and Irwin Westby, who also happen to be siblings, were appointed Maid of Honour and Best Man., respectively. Vanya Garcia-Ferrell is the daughter of Alfred Garcia (deceased) and Marlene Broaster who resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A. Christian Ferrell is the son of Verna Ferrell and Earl Godfrey – both of Placencia Village. The couple are proud parents of Chrisanya (9 years old), Doren, Jr. (13 years old), Christian, Jr. (6 years old), Calvin (3 years old) and Calieya (1 year and four months old). ▪

SEA and Splash Organize 7th Earth Day Beach Clean up at Laughing Bird Caye By Justino Mendez SEA Outreach Officer, education@seabelize.org Every year the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) in collaboration with SPLASH Dive Center host and coordinate an “Earth Day” event. This year under the theme “Mobilize the Earth: Living Green” “Sea-Splash” once again mobilized students from three community schools namely St. John’s Memorial Primary – Placencia, Independence High School – Independence and Nuestra Senora Primary School – Sagitun, who gave their all in making this event a success. Laughing Bird Caye National Park – World Heritage Site, co-managed by the Southern Environmental Association along with the Forest Department, was given an early mothers’ day gift, as 70 plus participants picked up a total of 45 drum size garbage bags of litter that was washed up on the beach. In plain sight, no one could have imagined that all that garbage was there, but as you

dug deeper, the garbage emerged. “Sea-Splash” ensured that students not only worked in picking up garbage, but also made it a learning experience for them, as Marco Supal – gave them a presentation on “Marine Sea Turtles, Annelise on “Lion Fish” and Justino Mendez on “Coral Ecology” which made their visit to Laughing Bird Caye exciting and memorable. An excellent briefing was also done by head ranger Mr. Adolphos Molina Sr., which caught the attention of all participants. “Sea-Splash” would like to thank all participants for their support in this years’ Earth Day event and hope that next year we could continue having more participation from our community schools. Special thanks to all those who provided boat services, fuel, snacks, water, juice, garbage bags

Editorial Continued from Page Six. Our group met Derol Francis, the park ranger. Derol was an astute man and stood with upright shoulders as he explained park rules to us. I could easily tell that Derol cared immensely about the cayes, and thought he did a fine job channeling his important message to our group. Nick then explains what we’re about to do. He was very serious and clear, and I couldn’t help but think how perfectly well this job suited him. I couldn’t imagine the boy doing anything different with his life. During our snorkel, Nick gestured towards various marine organisms: a school of reef squid, an upside down jelly fish, a school of pretty, pretty blue tangs, a massive barracuda, angelfish, hogfish, parrotfish … the reef surely showed off that day. Now and then, we’d come to the surface, and he’d explain neat facts about our sightings and their importance to the health of the reef. Later on the island, Seahorse laid out a yummy lunch on the park table. Our previously gomafied friends were looking 100 percent better. Devin went above and beyond for us. He treated my friend Dari to the freshest coconut water she ever tasted. He had climbed the tree, picked the coconut and husked it before presenting it to her. She was highly impressed. On our way back to the Peninsula, we stopped at spot where the guides knew we’d see some turtles. I think it’s fascinating that there is that one hood in the underwater world where these creatures like to congregate. We encountered a huge scary fellow. Randy told me he was probably about 50 years old. I saw the hawksbill turtle, dotted with barnacles, picking at a conch shell with its beak and quickly realized just how powerful its bite would be. They let us get a good look, but caution us not to get too close. We had left Placencia for the Silk Cayes shortly after 9 a.m. and returned to the Seahorse dock at 4:30 p.m. We were greeted by the smiles and shouts of my two little nieces Mia and Rhianne excited to see their dad back on the mainland and very much in tune with how much fun he just had. ▪ April Tour Features: The Placencia Breeze would like to thank: Caribbean Travel & Tours: 523-3481 or info@ctbelize.com Dari Rogers

CGI convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world's most pressing challenges. According to CGI, to date their members have made more than 2,100 commitments, which are already improving the lives of nearly 400 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $69.2 billion. Battle was one of six students representing institutions in the Laureate International Universities (LIU) network who were selected to attend based on their leadership skills, commitment to social change and academic track record. LIU is a leading international network of higher education institutions comprised of more than 60 accredited campus-based and online universities offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 675,000 students around the world. Battle, along with the other LIU participants, completed a CGI U Commitment to Action pledge to contribute to the greater good. “The Clinton Global Initiative University offered ‘hope’ to realize my commitment to build the Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice in Belize, Central America, and to establish a Belizean Educational Association for Treatment of Cancer (BEAT),” she said. “The skill sessions offered practical solutions to many of the existing challenges that I face in utilizing social media and in building practical partnerships with a focus on my CGI U commitment.” The Placencia native who calls herself a “village girl at heart” holds dual citizenship in the United States, and is the founder of the Blissfulsage Foundation. Founded in 2004 and inspired by her three children Bliss, Sage and Zion, the Blissfulsage Foundation is committed to “educational, medical, cultural and spiritual programs that

support those on the threshold of change and growth.” Battle organizes the annual “Battle Cancer 5 Mile-Run/Walk” in Placencia Village, which leads up to Lobsterfest. Inspired by her father’s lost battle with prostate cancer, she is presently working on the second phase of the The Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice and Home Care program in Dangriga. Battle met personally with President Clinton at the event in D.C. to share her commitment to make a difference. “The CGI U experience was priceless. I left feeling refreshed with creative ideas and hope for the future of hospice in Belize, Central America,” she said. More than 1,000 students participated in this year’s CGI U. The event offered panel discus-

sions and skill-building sessions on the meeting’s focus areas of education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health. The attendees also took part in a community service project held in conjunction with Rebuilding Together and the United Service Organizations (USO) to refurbish homes for low-income families in Washington, D.C. Battle is married to the Very Rev. Michael Battle, Ph. D. ▪ Want to help? Contact Raquel Battle: (U.S.) 626-940-7879 raquel.battle@hotmail.com Like her Facebook Page! Reunion in Placencia Continued from Front Page. Bryan was on a mission in Iraq when he made some conversation time with his squad leader Sergeant William “RB” Berry, son of Placencia resident Cleveland Berry. Spending hours of driving time together, Bryan soon learned of Berry’s childhood growing up in a tiny Central American country called Belize. Berry shared the history of his home country and some stories about politics ... It was the first time Anderson had heard about Belize. During a second mission together, Anderson shared his plans to travel with Shelby to St. Lucia. “Why don’t you go to Belize?” suggested Berry. “I want to go somewhere tropical,” replied Anderson, which triggered a quick geography lesson from Sergeant Berry. … It didn’t take much time before Bryan contacted Shelby back home in North Carolina. “Forget St. Lucia, we’re going somewhere better. We’re going to Belize!” Shelby quickly began to research the newly proposed destination and was surprised with her findings: Mayan ruins, waterfalls, second largest barrier reef in the world and jungle. “I found out Belize has the same as St. Lucia AND THEN SOME!” said Shelby in her endearing southern American accent.

“Forget St. Lucia, we’re going somewhere better. We’re going to Belize!” Berry had made arrangements for the couple to stay with his sister in Placencia and had asked his cousin to fetch the couple from the Philip Goldson International Airport and drive them down to the village. “Everyone was so kind,” noted Shelby. Shelby and Brian came to Belize with no set itinerary, but their dream vacation began to take form in no time as the two plunged into the local scene. They met a retiree at Yoli’s Bar who offered to take them to a popular waterfall near a banana farm just 30 minutes outside the village. “He refused to take any compensation for the trip. He just wanted us to have an experience of a lifetime,” said Shelby. “We were surprised to find something like this so close. It was a hidden gem and an effortless trip,” she added. Shelby and Bryan were impressed that other visitors at the falls from Placencia had recognized their faces. “We didn’t feel like outsiders. Within 24 hours

being in Placencia we felt like we were home.” And how did Shelby and Bryan connect with locals so fast? “Oh my gosh! Just by getting on the street!” answered Shelby. “There’s a smile on everyone’s face. You can walk to the beach and say, ‘Hey! How are you doing?’” explained Bryan. “We showed respect and gratitude, and that goes a long way in Placencia,” added Shelby. “People quickly embraced us.” The couple’s next adventure outside the village was a trip to Mayan archaeological site Xunantunich with popular local tour Guide Doyle Gardiner of Nite Wind Tours. “Doyle was phenomenal,” said Shelby Duncan Shelby. “Our personalities clicked right holds a starfish at the couple’s favorite swimming spot away … he showed us so much during Bryan in the village. They said they were impressed with the fast the ride to Xunantunich that our concept clean-up efforts on the beach following the Easter festivities. of time just flew right out the window.” “The last thing we want to see is your coastline being littered, Bryan was especially pleased when endangering marine life,” said Shelby. Doyle pulled over during the Cross Country Cycling Classic and gave them the scoop on the race. “We saw the guy who came in first. Ten minutes had gone by before the second cyclist showed up,” he recalled. “That was an added bonus,” chimed in Shelby. In addition to putting some muscle into the only remaining hand-cranked ferry in Belize, enjoying the breathtaking view atop Xunantunich and their guide allowing time alone time together in the temple, Bryan also appreciated the relaxed environment among vendors at Xunantunich. “In Jamaica, you go up to Dunn’s River Falls and you get down, and you’re swamped and hounded by people to buy stuff – at Xunantunich in Cayo, we never felt pressured to make a purchase … If you didn’t buy, they didn’t get mad at you. They still respect you as a tourist, and that’s something we really enjoyed.” On their way back to Placencia, Doyle made a stop for tasty gibnut at a small restaurant in Cayo then treated his group with a visit to the Blue Hole along the Hummingbird Highway. “That just topped off our day,” said Shelby. “It was gorgeous, the cool water was so refreshing … and it really was blue!”

Shelby poses at the Blue Hole where she and Bryan stopped on their way back to Placencia from Xunantunich with local tour guide Doyle Gardiner.

And while Shelby and Bryan took time to explore wonders easily accessible from Placencia, they spent most of their two weeks enjoying attractions on the Peninsula: delicious food, fun nightlife, crazy Easter parties and beautiful beach. “Easter Weekend was like MTV Spring break without MTV,” said Bryan with a chuckle. “It was very vibrant and lively,” added Shelby. “There was so much to do and see – that was more that I could have ever imagined that this little village could put together.” Shelby said she was further impressed with the unstoppable nightlife during the Easter weekend. “It was nice that one bar shut down at 2 (a.m.), there was another place still going until 4 (a.m.) on the beach.” The couple’s favorite party spots during their two-week visit were the Barefoot Bar, The Pickled Parrot and Tipsy Tuna. “The music was great!” Shelby exclaimed. “We liked that there was every style in the mix,” added Bryan. “I heard reggae all the way to country which I listen to back home.”

Bryan Anderson

Shelby hugs Dylan Bernard of Placencia who grew close to the couple during their short stay. “I cannot speak highly enough of Dylan. He has taken both of us under his wing,” said Shelby.

The couple also recognized this colorful diversity reflected in the people they met and the food, which they enjoyed at many restaurants in the village. “I don’t think there’s been a bad meal yet,” said Shelby who spoke with the Breeze the night before her departure. “Everything has been organic, wholesome … words just can’t describe how good the food has been.” Shelby and Bryan said that they are definitely planning to return to Placencia. Following our interview, Shelby flew back home to North Carolina, and Bryan returned to Kuwait to complete the remainder of his deployment. ▪

COMMUNITY BRIEFS COMMUNITY briefs Rotary Club of Placencia March was another busy, active month for the Rotary Club of Placencia as we continued with our Bingo games, helped with a major event, continued work on an ongoing project, planned for several projects, and, sadly, gathered to honor a good friend that is moving back to the U.S. BINGO Due to the Easter holiday in early April and the fact that March had 5 Thursdays, Bingo was held 3 times during the month. On March 1, a large crowd gathered for some fun and a chance to win our still growing progressive jackpot. The lucky winners were Bruce, Tom (2 time winner), Morris, Rita, Carol, Doug, and Katrine (winners of the last 2 games names were not available) with some larger than usual pots won and a pot of over $200 in the jackpot game. The crowd was a bit smaller, but no less enthusiastic on March 15 with Tom, Diane, Celia, Ally, Maretha and Lynn (split pot), Adrian’s Mother, Maretha, Nettie and Bob all winning nice pots and Celia, Fabulous and Therese splitting a pot of over $140 in the jackpot game. Despite the surprise announcement at the beginning of the jackpot game that an extra 3 numbers would be drawn for the jackpot “cover all”, there was still no winner and the jackpot grew to over $3000. Another large crowd gathered for the last game of the month, which was held on March 29, with the lucky winners being Leslie (2 time winner), Kim, Therese, Roger, Christina, Steve and Udith (split pot), Caroline, and Kendra in the jackpot game. There was still no winner of the progressive jackpot, which continues to grow with the large number of people coming out to play and will be well over $3000 at our first game in April. We wish to, once again, thank Kathy Anglin for calling most of the games and extend special thanks to J-Dees for providing the venue. The games will continue in April with dates to be determined, so, please check our Facebook page (Placencia Rotary), check the bulletin board at the field, listen to LOVE FM (with thanks to Rene Villanueva) or ask any Rotarian when the next game is scheduled. Our Bingo coordinator, Sandra Steele, has been changing things up periodically at the games by distributing free cards to regular players on occasion and extending the “cover all” jackpot game by 2 or 3 numbers, so, come out and join the fun while supporting your community. The progressive jackpot keeps growing, you could be the lucky winner. FLAMING HEART BALL The Rotary Club of Placencia has been instrumental in supporting the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) since its’ beginning and continued that support by volunteering at the annual Flaming Heart Ball on March 10. Our Club still actively raises funds for the purchase of needed equipment and funding of other PVFD needs, but, the Fire Board and Fire Department have held the Flaming Heart Ball for several years now in an effort to raise adequate funds for the operating expenses of the PVFD. The Flaming Heart Ball started in 2008 with some success and has grown significantly, especially over the last 2 years, under the capable direction of Cindy Weller and Stephanie Wandke, to become a major event. The Rotary Club of Placencia wishes to thank Salva and Gillian Zabaneh for all of their efforts and support of this event and, also, Cindy Weller and Stephanie Wandke for all of their hard work in putting together an outstanding event and successful fund raiser. It was a privilege for mem-

bers of our Club to help out on this event by selling tickets and working to help with the setup and cleanup as well as serving and working the night of the event. The success of this event and the money raised demonstrates what can be accomplished if everyone helps out in any way they can. We hope that events like these, that represent cooperative efforts, will encourage more people to volunteer their time and help their community.

Once again this year, the Rotary Club of Placencia will be working with Raquel Battle on the annual Cancer Walk to be held in June just before Lobsterfest. Our Club has participated in this event for the last few years and will continue to do our best to help in any way we can to support this important cause. We encourage all members of the community to support this cause and do whatever they can to help.

BOB EDMUNDS On March 12, members of the Rotary Club of Placencia and friends gathered at Jim and Cindy Weller’s house to honor Bob Edmunds, who has moved back to the U.S. (at least for now). Bob has been a key member of the Rotary Club of Placencia for several years now and has served on the Board of Directors as Rotary Foundation Director for most of those years. Also, Bob has been acting as our cashier for Bingo, auctions, and other events, leaving very large shoes to fill. We will all miss Bob and his sense of humor (as well as his bagels and famous rum cake) and look forward to his return to Placencia.

OUR CLUB The Rotary Club of Placencia continues to grow and, as can be seen, accomplish much in our community, but, we need more active members to

ONGOING/UPCOMING PROJECTS On March 31, Placencia Rotarians returned to the Placencia Cemetery to continue work on painting the fence (work was suspended with the fence move and the rainy season) and made more progress. We will return to continue work on the job after Easter and hope for enough Club and community participation to finish the work (see our Facebook page, Placencia Rotary for information).

Please consider attending one of our meetings (Tuesdays at 12:30 PM at Yoli’s, lunch is $10) or

really achieve our goals.

speak to any Rotarian to find out what projects are planned and what you can do to help. If membership is not something you can consider at this time, we encourage you to still get involved by volunteering to help out on any of our many projects. We do work hard at times, but, the fellowship and the good feelings we get from making the effort and giving back are rewards beyond the effort involved. ▪

Another small project was completed in March with Sonny and Greg replacing the chalk board at the field and modifying the frame. This board is meant to be used by members of the community and all organizations to advertise their events, so, please respect others, use only chalk on the board (do not stick or staple anything to it), and clean the board after the event for others to use. Work continues on the planning for the annual Senior Lunch to be held in May at Nautical Inn in Seine Bight. Placencia Rotarians will be soliciting donations for this event and we hope that all will give as generously as they have in the past to ensure that our seniors can be honored in the fashion they deserve. Lydia Villanueva and Maretha McCullock are heading up the efforts for our Club and will work hard to make this year’s event the best one yet. Work and planning are also continuing on several other projects including additional work at the Rotary Club members paint fence at cemetery. St. Alphonsus preschool in Seine Bight to replace windows and add security measures to the existing school, planning for the Summer Reading Program to be held for the third year in a row and, once again, including teachers from the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada, planning for a bicycle safety program, planning for the construction of picnic tables and some benches at the field (with some restoration work on the grill) and on the beach, and planning for the construction of book shelves and computer tables (with the Rotary Club of Edmonton West) in the St. Alphonsus preschool.

Sailing Lessons Available for Placencia Youths and “Young at Heart” Elders A bright new opportunity has opened up for youths in Placencia with free time on their hands. South Waters Resort Owners Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Cabral, Jr. have partnered with the Belize Sailing Association to lead the Placencia Optimist Sailing Club, which will be teaching sailing and racing to youths as well as “young at heart” elders of Placencia Village. Optimists are a class of small, inexpensive, and very portable sailboats. They are used worldwide and more extensively than any other design to teach sailing to children ages eight to 15 years old. Placencia Optimist Sailing Club formed when the Belize Sailing Association (BzSA) a recently registered non -governmental organization and charity joined the International Optimist Association. The Club aims to prepare Placencia youths for sailing competitions throughout the country and worldwide at Olympics standard. According to the Cabrals, Placencia youths will recognize that not only is sailing part of their rich cultural heritage, but the skills and learning involved is fun and exciting in a manner that will strengthen them mentally and physically, as well as improve their self-esteem, self-confidence, and leadership skills. Membership fees are nominal. Youths ages eight to 15 years old will pay an annual membership fee of $25 yearly while the Young at Heart Adults , ages 16 and up, will pay an annual membership fee of only $50. Anyone can become a member. Interested youths and adults can go to South Waters Resort to apply for membership or call 620-7320/600-9513/636-5540. Businesses or individuals are encouraged to sponsor a boat. Attractive incentives include having the sponsor’s name prominently displayed on the hull. Also, two businesses may sponsor a boat; one name on the port side and the other on the starboard. Fiberglass Optimist hulls are known to last for 15 years, and even if sub-tropical climes decrease longevity, the Cabrals assure that a one-time investment will still provide advertising for a number of years, minimizing the annual cost of an ad on the hull. ▪
