Fall-themed activity day: Cornucopia in action

This year’s Cornucopia, a day of activities before Thanksgiving break, presented a variety of clubs and teachers hosting events around the school. Peer Mediation planned the day and oversaw the activities led by Conestoga’s clubs and teachers. Ping-pong, watercolor paintings, watching the World Cup live in the atrium and viewing Asian American movies were some of the events in which students could participate.

“I saw a ton of people in the atrium watching the World Cup. So that seems to be like the most popular one (cornucopia activity),” said junior Kayla Allen.

For a snack, students could go down to the gym entrance or main lobby and buy an assortment of goods at different clubs’ bake sales.

“Some of the big events are the outdoor events. The track and the gym activities are also popular. We have badminton and softball and we also have separate rooms for each activity,” said senior Yasthika Ashokkumar, a member of Peer Mediation.

Cornucopia is an annual tradition at Conestoga and is expected to stay for years to come.

“I think it’s a good activity for people,” junior Shay O’Connell said. “And it’s nice (to have) before break.”

Worldle

Wordle is an online game where players have six tries to guess a five-letter word, with a new word every day. After guessing a word, each letter’s tile turns gray, green or yellow to signal how close the guess was to the correct word.

Why do you play Spanish Wordle with students?

“It (Wordle) is a warm-up. It’s to lure them into the class and get them to start thinking about Spanish. Even on the first day, I was impressed. Students already discovered pat terns and were able to recall vocab quicker than I was able to think about them.”

Patrick Cupo, Spanish teacher

Why do you think Wordle is popular?

“I think it’s become pretty popular be cause it’s a fun game and it doesn’t take a lot of time out of your day since a new word comes every day. It’s addicting. You have that anticipation every day to play.”

What’s your favorite starting word?

“I made a program where you type in the hint that it gave you and it narrowed down the list of all the words. I just felt that my vocabulary was too limited. I don’t use it anymore because it made the game not very fun. It made it too easy, but I learned some new words from that that are useful, like the word ‘fouat.’”

Ved Radhakrishnan, 11

Do you think Wordle has changed recently?

“Since the New York Times bought Wordle, I don’t think Wordle has changed that much. I do feel like the words are getting a little more difficult but I like that because it is more challenging. This hasn’t changed my opinion of the game and I still enjoy playing it every day.”

Making

One step at a time: Boys’ soccer team looks to make playoff push

There are three minutes and 43 seconds left in the match. The boys’ soccer team is down 2-0 to their archrivals and central league counterparts, Lower Merion High School. With all hope seemingly lost, the pioneer pit remains passionate for the team in the dwindling minutes. As the clock shows less than three minutes, the boys pile into the box for one of their renowned and deadly throw-ins. Senior Peter Miller steps up to launch the ball into the box, and like a hawk swooping in, junior Westin Fryberger rises above all to head the ball back into the net, giving the team a glimmer of hope. The boys found a spark of light in the darkness and scored two goals before the final buzzer. They eventually won with a goal in overtime from sophomore Cole Frederick. And the rest is history.

After their storybook victory over Lower Merion High School, the boys soccer team finished the regular season with a 14-2 record, losing to Radnor High School and Holy Ghost Preparatory School in close contests. They won their first three playoff games, but

came up short in a 1-0 loss to Lower Merion High School in the district finals. dd squad is looking to move onto the states later this month and defend their title from last season. Assistant coach Blake Stabert has a positive outlook on the playoffs and has helped lead the team to where they are today.

“We just try to go 1-0 and win the game that’s next. The mindset is if you win you get to play another game, and our goal is to win the one. In the playoffs we just put all of our efforts, all of our focus, and all of our energy into the next game.” Stabert said.

The team lost a large number of seniors last year which made up a big part of the team and their winning streak of over 40 matches came to an end this season as well. The last two matches of the regular season were some of their worst with a 1-0 win over Harriton High School and a 1-0 loss to Radnor High School. playoffs.

“ looking too far ahead when we’ve got games we know we got to win,” Howard said.
