Treble Clef & Pitches The clef determines the name of a note on a staff. In English, each note is a letter: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. In Spanish, each notes is solfege: Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol, La, Si. Each note represents a pitch, the frequency of a vibration. The treble clef is used to represent high pitch ranges. This is a treble clef.

The note G is located in the curl of the treble clef, or G clef. The pitch is higher than Middle C.

notehead

If a note is above the third line of a staff, the stem extends down on the left of the note.

If a note is below the third line of a staff, the stem extends up on the right of the note.

If a note is on the third line of a staff, the stem can either go up or down depending on the note before and after the note.

The length of a stem should extend from the notehead to the space or line with the same letter.

Activities 1 Draw a treble staff with 5 measures. Include a double bar.

Write two half notes in each measure and identify each note on the line.

2 Draw a bass clef with 4 measures. Include a double bar. Write four quarter notes in each measure and identify each note on the line.

Activities 3

Draw a grand staff with 6 measures. Include a double bar. Write one whole note in each measure and identify each note on the line.

Time Signature A time signature is found at the beginning of a piece of music after the clef. There are two numbers: numerator (indicates the number of beats in a measure) denominator (indicates the note that equals one beat) When music is in 4/4: A quarter note equals 1 beat. There are 4 quarter notes in one measure.

Du - Du - Du - Du 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 A half note equals 2 beats. There are 2 half notes in one measure.

Du - u - Du - u 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 A whole note equals 4 beats. There is 1 whole note in one measure.

Du - u - u - u 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

Activities 1 Write a treble clef followed by a 4/4 time signature at the beginning of the music. Add bar lines, a double bar line, and stems to the notes so that there are 4 beats per measure.
