With the days getting longer, crocus and daffodils emerging in hedgerows, and blossom appearing on trees, it’s a wonderful time for a refresh.

This amber woody scent is sooo comforting. It’s like snuggling down in the corner of an old leather sofa, in a rarely used library, with a fabulous old book, while the rays of the sun stream through the cobwebbed windows, as dust motes dance, casting playful shadows across the wood-panelled floor. Quite possibly you could lose yourself for hours wrapped in warm, powdery notes. Resinous tones of saffron, frankincense and benzoin tears blend mellifluously to a honeyed glow.

CAROLINA HERRERA GOOD GIRL BLUSH

Elegant, effortless and iconic are the three words we at PSHQ would use to describe the Carolina Herrera brand – and that goes for the fragrances too. With over 20 brands within their fragrance division, including Good Girl, this hugely successful company continues to deliver style and sophistication. Quentin Bisch worked alongside Shyamala Maisondieu and Christophe Raynaud for this latest interpretation of this range, taking inspiration from the famous bottle itself. Bisch said "It instantly brought to mind the vanilla bean. The heel is the strength of the shoe, and I imagined the vanilla as the strength of the fragrance."

As with other Good Girl fragrances, it’s all about duality and contrasts. The character of the scent is sensual, yet strong; instinctive and intelligent; romantic and empowered. This attitude was applied to the ingredients, for example the vanilla. The gourmand notes have been used in previous Good Girl incarnations, but here an additional powdery extraction added the ‘blush’. A ylangylang absolute increased the depth, whilst the petal has a shimmering lightness. For us, this scent upholds the Carolina Herrera reputation – elegant, effortless and iconic.

SOKI LONDON EMPRESS

One definition of a ‘disruptor’ is ‘a person who has found an innovative way of doing business’. With establishing a following of over 100K on social media, and then crowd-funding to create a fragrance that her followers have had a hand (nose?) in since the start, Soki London has certainly found her own way. The kickstarter fans are happy too, with Empress launching on time. And this is just the start, her second fragrance, Aphrodite, is looking to launch this summer. Here at PSHQ we can’t wait to see what she does next.

Empress, in a gem-shaped bottle of Imperial purple, is topped with a unique star cap designed by Soki. The fragrance is a tour de force. It’s not just the strawberry fruit in the opening, but there’s a hint of the leaves and stems adding a green freshness. The bold floral heart of peony and rose gives a substantial body to the scent, with the warm popcorn and toffee at the base adding a warm, almost nutty quality – and who would argue if this was refered to as a gourmand. The whole is a longlasting powerful fragrance with a feminine touch, which we believe lives up to its name.

And the smell is fabulous. Sparkling citrus notes burst out of the bottle, all bright and bold, as expected of a Versace concoction. Bergamot and orange shimmer on top of juicy pear. The pomarose® is a fruity rose with lashings of plum, alongside the lily of the valley in mahonial®, this adds a fresher, green note too, performing a balancing act with the sweetness. The woody, musky, amber base is not heavy, but robust and enduring. The baroque purple bottle is gorgeous too. Boucheron is the embodiment of classic, high-end luxury and French ‘Je ne sais pas’. Founded over a century ago as jewellery boutique on the Place Vendôme, it wasn’t until 1988 that a first perfume was launched. La Collection Boucheron range pays homage to the city or place each fragrance has in its name. Rose D’Isparta, inspired by Isparta in Turkey, also known as the 'City of Roses’, was the inspiration behind Rose D’Isparta. Sonia Constant the perfume said “I sought to enhance every facet of this sumptuous rose and sculpt it like a stone cutter.“

Lured by rich seams of precious ore and acres of flowers, the gem hunters of the jewellery house’s inspiration are roaming the open plains of Turkey. This is a complex fragrance and the longevity only tells of the quality of the ingredients and talent of the team at Floris. It’s green, very, very green. There’s a cucumbery note from the cyclamen. And it’s fresh. So very fresh. The bergamot is much zestier than in other fragrances, giving a piquancy that’s really quite different from the citrus notes this adds to other scents. Frankincense adds a touch of spice. And then it’s floral with hints of orange. There’s hope in this fragrance and the promise of new beginnings – just like spring. This conjures up pottering in the garden, planting fresh herbs and spring flowers, when you’re not actually doing anything at all. You can just sit – and breathe.
