Season's Greetings! editor’s note

A

s a native Tri-Citian, to me there’s no place like home for the holidays. The crisp winter days in the Tri-Cities provide a cozy backdrop for seasonal festivities.

My family likes to take in the multitude of residential holiday light displays around town. We always make sure to visit the Desert Plateau neighborhood in Pasco where hundreds of homes’ driveways are lined with luminarias and decked out in lights. You’ll find the displays along Road 44 to Burden Boulevard, to Yuma Street and around James McGee Elementary School. It’s generally held the Saturday evening before Christmas. Another favorite is Christmas Carol Lane in Kennewick. Drive up the hill on Garfield and watch for signs in the area of West 24th Avenue.

HOBBY HUB

PLANNING This time of year provides endless opportunities for hosting a party. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, the Superbowl, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patty’s all make for nice excuses for planning a gathering. No matter the type of party you plan, there are a few basics to keep in mind for the most successful and stress-free planning:

3-4 weeks ahead:

Decide on your guest list and send out invites online via Evite or through snail mail. Ask for guests to RSVP to ensure you’re prepared for the number of guests you’ll host.

1-2 weeks ahead:

Plan the menu and gather any special supplies you may need. Tablecloths, festive plates and napkins, decorations...make provisions for all.

3-5 days ahead:

Set aside some time to clean the house. The party will be more enjoyable if you’re not scrambling to make your space presentable.

3 days ahead:

Prepare your grocery list and go shopping. Save buying the extremely nonperishable goods for the last minute.

1-3 days ahead:

Prepare any recipes that can be made ahead of time and refrigerated or frozen.

Day of party:

Enjoy the fruits of your labor as you host a party not only your guests will enjoy, but you will, too!

Hi Kids!

Santa here! The misses and I would love to hear from you during the holidays. The nice folks at the CENTURY 21 office in the Tri-Cities are making it really easy for you to ask Santa for everything on your Christmas list. On Thursday, December 19 between 3:00-6:00pm, mom and dad can bring you by the new CENTURY 21 branch within the Hapo location on 4 North Union St. in Kennewick, where you can dig into cookies and hot cocoa while you craft your letter. We will have crayons and paper, lots of holiday spirit with Christmas music, and some of my elves will be hanging around to spread holiday cheer. There may even be a special guest who wears a big red suit. (It’s ME!) I do hope you’ll join us for our letter-writing party. At the North Pole, Rudolph prances out to the mailbox every morning to bring in all the letters from across the world. Although we are quite busy in the toy shoppe this time of year, we like to cozy up with some hot cocoa during our breaks and take turns reading the letters. It makes me HO-HO-HO! letters. It makes me HO-HO-HO!

To all a good night!

he Perfect Move shadowed Terra Blanca winemaker Keith Pilgrim around his vineyards for insight into this award-winning brand of

TPM: You’ve been making wine on Red Mountain since the early '90's. With the growth in the industry since then, what sets your wines apart? KP: Stylistically we are aiming to capture the wonderful, expressive fruit of the West-Coast winemaking styles coupled with the balance and elegance of the European heritage. We take our time with aging using all French oak barrels for 20-32 months, followed by blending, bottling and aging for a minimum of one year in the bottle. TPM: Your slogan is “White Earth, Blue Skies, Red Mountain”. What’s it mean? KP: Red Mountain soils are a combination of windblown silts and sands interfingered with deposits from the Missoula floods. These deposits are white since they are coated in calcium

Busi n ess o n t h e m ove

carbonate. The name Terra Blanca is also Latin for “white earth”. TPM: Tell me about your tasting room’s Cafe Orsa and how your partnership with Twigs came about. KP: We’ve had a great relationship with Twigs for a number of years and were huge fans of their move to the TriCities. Once Twigs opened in Kennewick, we started to work with them on our banquet business. TPM: How would you describe passion for the wine you make? KP: I grew up with wine-interested parents less than 15 miles from Napa Valley. I love wines that exhibit a sense of place, with nuance and balance.

The Massage and Lash Image

T

hey’re everywhere...magazines, TV, and more recently, on your neighbor, your coworker, and in many selfies on Facebook. They are eyelash extensions and according to Laura Geertsma, co-owner of The Massage and Lash Image in Kennewick, they are the biggest beauty trend going. Simply put, lash extensions are like self-applied, store-bought lashes, but are professionally applied, allowing them to stay put for weeks at a time. You need to have them touched up every month or so depending on how quickly your natural lashes regenerate. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to get a full set applied with fills taking 45-60 minutes. You can still wash your face, bathe, swim, and wear mascara and your lashes shouldn’t be any worse for wear.

massagelashimage.com | flashyourstyle.net

There are many reasons gals are flocking to get the service. Lash extensions tend to give your eyes that “pop”, allowing you to forego eye makeup. Geertsma says many customers have them applied at the beginning of summer when they are spending more time outdoors. They don’t want to worry about applying makeup while camping or boating but don’t want to look unkempt. Proms, weddings, and holiday parties also cause lash afficianados to come in droves. No matter the reason, one of the biggest perks of having your lashes done? “Extensions can make you look 5+ years younger,” says Geertsma. Massage and Lash Image also offers waxing, Jane Iredale mineral makeup, and courses to certify new Lash Extension Professionals. n

Lucky Flowers Look no further than Lucky Flowers in Kennewick for a unique solution to a classic Valentine’s Day practice of sending flowers to your loved one. You can’t go wrong with roses but why not try something a little more exotic? Co-owner Melissa Behen says sending tropical flowers is a fun alternative. Flowers like Bird of Paradise, ginger, hybiscus, and orchids are shipped from Hawaii, which will make you look like you really put in some extra effort in the gift department. Behen says other fun ideas involve sending red tulips, which are said to represent the heart of a lover, the ranuncalus, which looks like a garden rose, symbolizes being captivated by a person’s charm, and red carnations, which say, “My heart aches for you”. Ironically, since carnations are much less expensive than roses, your wallet won’t ache from their purchase. Behen says it’s smart to get your flowers ordered by at least the day before Valentine’s for best service. n 6827 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick 509-547-6091

Garden Feature

To have your yard make it through winter the best, follow these quick tips.

1

Water evergreen plants monthly through the winter time because our dry winds can damage their foliage or kill them. The following species are best to water in winter: Arborvitae, Soft needled Pine, Cedar, Cypress, Rhododendron, Azalea, Boxwood, Euonymus, and Japanese Maples.

2

Mulch roses, rhododendrons, blueberries, azaleas by mounding 2 to 3 inches of bark or compost over the crown of these plants. It’s an easy way to insulate the plants from cold snaps and helps hold moisture on their roots. If you could use compost as the mulch it slowly feeds your plants over winter to have awesome plants for the next growing season. Remove the mulch in late February or early March.

3

Blowing out Sprinklers is a good way to preserve your sprinkler system and prevent major repairs annually. You can hire this task out or do it yourself with an air compressor.

4

Your lawn is ok to be fed in September or October, but shrubs and perennials should be not be fed after Labor Day to give them time to harden off or shut down for winter. This minimizes winter kill on tender new growth.

5

Plant Smart by selecting plants that are rated USDA zone 6 (0 to -10 degrees F) or for a colder tolerance. That way your landscape is ready to handle our normal winter temperatures. n– Alex Job

Humanitarian at Heart

M

otivating students to show up at school is at the heart of a program aimed at 11,000 area middle schoolers.

The United Way initiative, “Attendance Matters”, is designed to increase the number of kids who make it to school each day and to develop good habits they’ll use for the rest of their lives. “As kids’ absences increase, grades drop,” says Dave Bond, Kennewick School District superintendent and United Way board member. Bond says a former WSU Tri-Cities professor compiled data from local schools, charting absences and corresponding student grades. “It was no surprise that students with failing grades also missed the most school,” he says.

A $25,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation got the ball rolling, paying for a series of TV commercials touting the benefits of staying in school. United Way staffers say the goal is to reduce the number of school days missed per year per student from eleven to 9 or less. Hello, my name is

Besides raising awareness, students will be incented with a reward and recognition program, including Tri-Cities Fever game tickets throughout the school year. Bond says a follow-up study will be done eventually to chart the impact the program has made on reducing absences. n

Miesha Tate, MMA Fighter & Coach

T

he Tri-Cities has seen its share of successful athletes (see: Hope Solo, Olaf Kolzig, and Kimo von Oelhoffen) but mixed-martial arts athletes have not been well represented until now. Miesha Tate, the coach of “Team Tate” on the latest season of Fox Sports’ The Ultimate Fighter, is spending some time in the Tri-Cities. She’s tuning up with Chiawana High School wrestling coach Jack Anderson, who accompanied her to Las Vegas for the show’s filming, as she prepares for a title fight against her rival at MGM Grand December 28. It has been a long road to success for the grappler. A native of Tacoma, Tate was the first female at Franklin Pierce High School to wrestle. She competed throughout high school and won the Washington Women’s State

Championship. She endured some teasing for wanting to participate in a traditionally male sport. “People told me it was weird and to stop lifting weights. It was offensive to some guys,” she says. Tate continues to carry the flag for equality in women’s sports. “It’s really important for young women to realize there’s no reason in this day and age a woman can be told she can’t do something a man can do. It’s disappointing when women segregate themselves,” she says. A firm believer in the femininity of female athletes, Tate disrobed on a Southern California beach for the 2013 ESPN The Magazine’s “Body” issue. “It was nervewracking,” she says. 

EVERY DAY Day 1

T

aylor Vickerman is giving Tri-City Americans fans a little extra something to cheer about. In August, the 17-year-old, 6’1” left wing was traded to the Ams from the Vancouver Giants, bringing him back to Kennewick where he grew up playing hockey. A senior at Kamiakin High School, Vickerman says it has been a dream of his to play not only in the WHL, but for the Americans. “This is a really unique opportunity to play on the hometown team,” he says. He began knocking the puck around at age three, playing in leagues at TRAC, Rink B, and the Toyota Center.

Vickerman has an advantage that the other players don’t: his parents. While players normally stay in the homes of billets, Vickerman gets to bed down at home with his parents and three younger siblings nearby for support. “After a rough day, it’s great to have

EXTRA

TO CHEER ABOUT! them here,” he says. “My mom is a really good cook, my dad gives a lot of feedback, and my parents really get into the game.” It certainly doesn’t hurt his efforts to have the support of fans who know he’s a local boy done good. “I have my mom and dad and really the whole Toyota Center cheering for me.”

Vickerman had a rough start to his Ams career. He was hurt in the third game of the season against Portland, sidelining him for several weeks. After getting back to full strength, Vickerman will work to light the lamp for his hometown supporters once again. 
