Reprinted from the Journal Gazette
Lessons of history must be reinforced It’s been nearly 50 years since I walked through the Dachau concentration camp site outside Munich, but reading John Lohman’s Jan. 4 op-ed was a stark reminder at how unforgettable was that experience. What I remember most, as Lohman described, was watching a caravan of school buses arrive and deposit crowds of glum pre-teen German schoolchildren. A travel companion of mine was a native German, and she explained it was required of all German students within travel distance of Dachau to visit the site. Why, I asked her, would you want these young people to see this? Her response was simply, “So we never forget.” We should learn from this response. Lohman cited a statistic that 1 in 5 young Americans now doesn’t believe the Holocaust was real. Does this really surprise anyone? We live in a world where history seems to be only what we want to make it. Therefore, GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley can describe the causes of the Civil War without mentioning slavery; educators in Florida can approve a curriculum that highlights the beneficial life lessons Negros received from being enslaved; some members of Congress still describe the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol as an overzealous group of tourists. Too often we fall back on George Santayana’s famous saying that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” without fully considering what that means. Our history, the good and the bad, defines who we are as a society and describes how we arrived at this point. If we ignore, for example, the Trail of Tears and the massacre at Wounded Knee, or Jim Crow, the KKK and the burning of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, or the World War II forced relocation of Japanese U.S. citizens into internment camps, then we lose perspective about and cheapen the many accomplishments and successes we have achieved as a nation. Without the truth of history, we are trapped in a Potemkin façade, leaving us ill prepared for when reality inevitably crashes into us, as it did for those young German students I saw at Dachau. In the end, history has one big lesson to teach us. We must never forget. Troy Cozad Fort Wayne
