Laudeman was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He stayed in college for seven years to avoid the draft.

He was eventually drafted into the Army in the infantry in Vietnam. He then served in the Adjutant General Corps Civil Affairs office during Desert Storm and Operation Joint Endeavor. It was in this duty assignment he realized his calling as a counselor.

In this role, Laudeman explained, “You were a mediator, a liaison between the host nation and the Army.” He served in this capacity in both Saudi Arabia and Germany.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Kent Laudeman is actively engaged in saving people’s lives, including veterans. He is the part-time director of the STOP 22 program and is active in the United Health Service for Suicide Prevention Center.

STOP 22 refers to the estimated 22 veterans who commit suicide each day. It was a problem Laudeman became aware of in his 28-year career with the U.S. Army and then compounded as he continued to work with veterans locally. The mission of the Stop 22 Michiana chapter is “Bridging the gap between veteran suicides and prevention.”

Laudeman is the director of Miller’s Vets, a position he has held for seven years. While director, he has become more aware of the need for better sup-

Some still hold onto the belief, “you can’t admit you have a mental health issue [to risk losing a promotion or continuing to serve]. We have to get over this stigma that asking for help and pursuing help is what needs to be done.”

Helping veterans and others find their way to mental health resources is one of the ways he can serve.

Laudeman was a West Point Military Academy administrator and instructor in psychology and behavioral health.

“Education and information are important to anyone who may be having mental health issues or struggling with substance abuse. These people need to be encouraged to seek help and get to the right person who can

This is where the “bridging the gap” philosophy kicks in.

His role is to talk to organizations and give them tools they can use, such as free iPhone apps for suicide prevention hotlines and other resources.

His work involves more than just veterans. He also coordinates the Yellow Ribbon campaign, an awareness program for schoolchildren that teaches three steps: • Stay with a person contemplating suicide.

• Listen to them.

• Get them help.

Laudeman also provides the same training for area police departments and crisis intervention teams. He facilitates a suicide survivor support group on the last Tuesday of each month.

“I try to be a role model and be aware of anyone who may be experiencing mental health issues or contemplating suicide,” Laudeman said.

Tail waggin’ hayride will be Nov. 7 A tail waggin’ hayride will be this month at Bendix Woods County Park.

Robert J. Hiler Veterans Memorial — a place to reflect %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Some would argue there are never enough opportunities to thank veterans for their service to the nation. The Captain Robert J. Hiler Veterans Memorial at the Center for Hospice Care is the place to thank and memorialize those who served.

“The memorial allows donors to memorialize their loved ones

who served in the armed forces, particularly those who were or are patients in our care,” said Cyndy Searfoss, director of education and collaborative partnerships for CHC. The memorial was dedicated in 2016, and was founded by the Robert J. Hiler Family Foundation and John and Catherine Hiler. There is a rededication ceremony every year.

Hiler was a veteran of the

Vietnam conflict. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1971.

As an infantry officer, he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He also distinguished himself through multiple acts of heroism during combat operations for which he was awarded three Bronze Stars, including one for combat gallantry for his actions during a battle in May 1968.

valorous actions on the morning of May 17, 1968, while serving as a platoon leader with Company A, 3d Battalion, 47th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, on a combat mission in Long An Province, Vietnam. The forward element of his platoon was cut down by heavy fire within 10 meters of an enemy bunker complex.

Completely disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Hiler crawled 20 meters under heavy fire to a wounded man’s position, destroying a bunker along the way with a well-aimed grenade.

Hiler, a successful businessman in LaPorte and community philanthropist, died Feb. 5, 2003.

Searfoss said the memorial was designed by Chris Chockley, a landscape architect at Jones Petrie Rafinski. Engraved stone benches are part of the memorial, as are flags recognizing each branch of the U.S. armed forces.

“The statue in the middle of the memorial is called ‘Poppies,’”she said. “This lifesize bronze statue, created by Florida-based sculptor W. Stanley Proctor, depicts an aging WWII veteran holding an American flag and a poppy. The poppy is a symbol of soldiers who have lost

their lives in battle.”

The CHC is a Level 5 partner in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Hospice and Palliative Care organization, Searfoss explained.

The purpose of this program is to raise awareness among veterans about the end-of-life benefits and services available, and the memorial is an outgrowth of that program.

“It’s a way C HC can recognize the service and sacrifice of veterans in the communities we serve,” she said.

On the banks of the St. Joseph River, the memorial is a solemn and tranquil place where people can reflect and remember their loved ones. There are benches tucked away on the landscaped grounds for visitors to use during their time of remembrance at the memorial.

The memorial is open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located at 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka.

Estate planning myth: Only the rich need an estate plan %\ &/,))25' - 5,&( (OGHU /DZ $WWRUQH\ *UDQJHU When we hear about estate planning in the news or read about it on the internet, it’s usually regarding a wealthy business person or &/,))25' - celebrity 5,&( who had no estate plan, made an error in their estate plan or has family members who are angry about the plan.

The topic catches people’s attention. Rich people have so much that, surely, they need an estate plan and can afford to have it done correctly. By comparison, when the average person thinks about their own planning needs, they assume their possessions are not worth enough to necessitate an estate plan.

This thinking could not be further from the truth. Estate

planning is about more than just money. While proper planning allows you to determine who gets your money and property upon your death, the planning process also addresses what happens if you become incapacitated (unable to manage your own affairs) and someone has to make decisions on your behalf — a far more likely scenario. If you don’t have an estate plan, the court will have to appoint someone to make medical and financial decisions for you. The process can be very time consuming, expensive and public, and can wreak havoc on a family if they disagree about who should be appointed and how decisions should be made.

Even if your means are modest, you should consider who gets your hard-earned assets when you die. If you have no plan, state law will decide who gets what, and many times the government’s best guess as to what you would have wanted is contrary to your own desires. If you didn’t take the opportunity to formalize your wishes in an estate plan, the state has to step in.

Let’s be clear: added sugar is the enemy

We have talked before about added sugar, and how much is too much, but it bears a recap.

The FDA fails to buck the sugar industry with more than a “choose carbohydrates wisely” warning, but the American Heart Association does have guidelines, so let’s take a quick look at those.

Under the AHA’s sugar guidelines, children under age 2 should have no added sugar, and most American women and kids over age 2 should consume no more than 100 calories per day from added sugars, with the maximum for most American men being 150 daily calories. On the food nutrition panel it will list Total Sugar and under that it will say “includes xx grams added sugar” and that is per serving, so make sure to check the listed serving size as they can be very sneaky on what they consider a serving size compared to what we would consider a serving size.

Seventy-five percent of packaged food and drink contains added sugar and there are 98 cereals that exceed the daily recommended limit of

added sugar, so be vigilant, because overconsumption of added sugar increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and strokes.

High blood pressure is being diagnosed in children.

So, guess what the only thing is that all health researchers can agree on? Right, eat more fruits and vegetables — lots more. Remember Dr. Fuhrman’s GBOMBS – Greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. At least a pound of vegetables both raw and cooked, always cook your mushrooms, 1 cup of beans/legumes, 1 ounce of seeds, 1 cup of starchy vegetable or grain, and fruit. Think about how many of these

items you could add to a salad, or a nutrition bowl — both raw and cooked together.

As we near the end of fall, consider squash and homemade soups; you’ll want to keep these stocked up so you always have a go-to instead of turning to something processed. Plan to have whole or minimally processed foods — proudly be the one at the table who orders salad or a veggie wrap instead of a cheeseburger and fries; in fact, be a leader and order first.

can expedite the processing of their Social Security disability claims if they become disabled while on active military service on or after Oct. 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs.

Active duty military service members who continue to receive pay while in a hospital or on medical leave should consider applying for disability benefits if they’re unable to work due to a disabling condition. Active duty status and receipt of military pay doesn’t necessarily prevent payment of Social Security disability benefits.

Marine Corps pride drives Vietnam veteran %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Ed Buras is a lifelong resident of South Bend and a Vietnam veteran. His story is an interesting one, as his parents were firsthand observers of the horrors war can bring.

Buras was born in Germany.

His parents were from Poland and were taken by the Germans to work as laborers on a farm in the southeastern part of Germany. His father and mother came from different parts of Poland but met at the farm and ended up getting married. Buras was born after World War II and the family emigrated to the United States.

His parents never talked about their experience. Buras, having served in war, understands this. “It changes people,” he said.

Buras decided to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in February 1968. He could have been deferred from military service because he was in college, but he chose instead to sign up. He was “curious,” he said, “to see what was going on in Vietnam.”

He did 13 months of active duty in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Buras served as a machine gunner in the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment.

His unit had a nickname — The Walking Dead — which was not related to the television series with the same name that is popular today.

He was later called back into active duty for the 1974 withdrawals of troops from Vietnam.

The aura of the Marines had always appealed to Buras.

He saw the pride Marines exude and the esprit de corps shared by those in the uniform.

He valued this, but he also found serving in the Marine Corps enhanced his pride in his service to his country and increased his feelings of patriotism.

Buras does not describe himself as a “flag hugger,” although he remains deeply patriotic. Patriotism, he said, is more than simply standing for the flag or the national anthem.

“Patriotism is doing something for the betterment of our country and for the betterment of the people in our country,” he explained.

He has put his own words into action. For the past decade, he has been the commander of Miller’s Vets, an organization established by the late Judge Robert Miller to help homeless veterans in the community. One of the key missions of this organization is to provide a color

This means any veteran who cannot afford a military funeral will have one, through agreements reached with local funeral homes.

Buras has found that many veterans, even those who are down on their luck, take tremendous pride in being able to help other veterans. As the commander, he coordinates the color guard’s schedule of funerals and appearances at veteran or community events.

Vargo, a lifelong White Sox fan %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU Andrew (Andy) Vargo of South Bend is a dedicated lifelong White Sox fan.

He said in his earlier years he would attend between 10 and 15 games a season. Despite working full time at Real Services for 43 years before retiring in 2020, he rarely missed a game.

In fact, Vargo explained that when the White Sox won the World Series in 2005 he called off sick to make sure he didn’t miss a single pitch.

“I watched every pitch of every game,” he said. “I either called in sick or took a vacation day if there were day games. I didn’t miss a pitch for all the games.”

Despite his wife, Denise, being a Cubs fan, they watched the entire game together and when the White Sox won, he became emotional.

“She was a so-called Cubs fan.

She was sitting next to me when the Sox won the World Series.

So, it was important enough for her to see me be happy,” Vargo explained.“I remember sitting on the couch with my wife during the very final game and when they got the final out I literally slid to my knees and started crying.”

He said his love for the White Sox originated because of his father’s love for the team.

“My dad was (a fan),” Vargo shared. “When he took me to a Sox game it was like going to Disneyland for me.”

In recent years he hasn’t attended the games as frequently as when he was younger, but he still makes time to watch and listen to the games.

“I don’t go much anymore. A lot of the games are at night and that’s just not for me anymore,” Vargo said. “I watch it on television and listen to the sports radio every morning. I still follow them, I just don’t get there

physically very much anymore.”

Through the years and the games attended he has slowly collected quite the display of White Sox memorabilia. Out of all the pieces he has, he shares that his most meaningful one is from the staff at Real Services.

“I’ve got Sox gear. I’ve got all the hats, jerseys, jackets and all that,” Vargo said. “The one the board gave me when I retired ... was pretty special and I was touched that they pitched in and spent a lot of money on my behalf.”

He shared that there were many times he was able to enjoy games with his family, but the one holding the most value to him is the game he watched with his sisters and mom.

“Back when my mom and sisters were alive, the Sox won the division in 1983 and I was at that night game. We were all at that game,” Vargo said.“Everybody was just in love with everybody. I mean it was 40,000 people just celebrating.”

They are the men responsible for the success of the risky endeavor called D-Day. Skirting the issue of the miniskirts Miniskirts were not born, as many of us believe, during the UK youthquake (as it was called) of the frenzied ’60s. $ %RRPHU %ODVW Over the 7R 7KH 3DVW years, arche%\ 5$1'$/ ologists have & +,// unearthed short-skirted European figurines created between 5400 and 4700 BC. Some ancient Egyptian frescos have depicted female acrobats wearing them, as well. During the 20th century, the “flapper” era saw entertainer Josephine Baker shock Parisian audiences with a miniskirt made of bananas when she performed in the Folies Bergere.

Fifties’ sci-fi movies such as “Flight to Mars” and “Forbidden Planet” also featured the controversial clothing. A decade later, Mexico City fashionistas were wearing skirts that stopped far above the knee.

Modern cultural historians, though, have given British fashion designer Mary Quant much of the credit for this worldwide clothing revolution. Since 1955, she and husband Alexander Plunkett Greene had operated Bazaar, an upscale boutique in the Chelsea area of London. (Bazaar was one of only two such shops there that catered to the young). Quant initially offered the short dresses to allow wearers to run for city buses more quickly.

The term miniskirt was derived from Quant’s favorite British car, the popular Mini Cooper. (In 1988, Quant designed the interior of a limited-edition Mini. Of the 2,000 built, each featured blackand-white-striped seats with red trimming, red seatbelts and Quant’s signature on the driver’s and passenger’s seats. These rare vehicles have now become coveted collector’s items for certain nos-

Spicer Lake Nature Preserve closed to public for deer management St. Joseph County Parks will continue the deer management program at Spicer Lake Nature Preserve in New Carlisle in November. Spicer Lake Nature Preserve will be closed to the public Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-14 and 20-21, for deer management activities.

The decision to continue with the deer management plan was based on several factors. The staff observed more deer and deer trails within the park property, and has observed increased damage to landscaping trees and herbaceous ground cover.

The neighbors communicated they were suffering deer damage to their landscaping. But efforts to cull the deer population were hampered when deer retreated into the park property.

The staff wants to act proactively to protect the forest ecosystem and woodland wildflowers within the nature preserve.

By the ’60s, Chelsea was emerging as a place of beatnik joints, cellar music clubs and fashion shops. Thanks to such fashion icons as Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, miniskirts quickly captured the zeitgeist of ultra-hip London during the Beatle era, and before long the fashion trend surfed the slipstream of the British Invasion to seemingly become mandatory dress for ladies worldwide for years thereafter.

To its wearers, the miniskirt

wasn’t only “groovy,” it also showed support for female liberation — something long overdue in the hearts of many. Women’s movement pioneers such as Gloria Steinem and Marlo Thomas tacitly endorsed the skirts when they made public appearances in them.

The short-dress trend lasted throughout the remainder of the decade, thanks in part to Goldie Hawn. She prolonged the fashion fad as a pop-culture phenomenon on TV’s “Laugh-In,” with young women often embracing Hawn’s signature skirts.

The fashion world is ever changing, of course, and by the end of the ’60s hemlines fell to the ankles in a style dubbed the “maxi,” with skirt lengths becoming the longest since World War I. No problem for Quant, though; by then, she had created another fashion rage: short shorts. Or, as they came to be known, “hot pants.”

‘Step Afrika!’ set to perform Nov. 3 in South Bend Ivy Tech Community College and South Bend Civic Theatre will present “Step Afrika!”

The two will be hosting “Step Afrika!” in collaboration with South Bend Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Indiana Black Expo. It will be from 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at South Bend Civic Theatre.

It is part of Ivy Tech’s monthly Soul Session Series.

“Step Afrika!” blends percussive dance styles, practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities.

“Step Afrika!” is a traditional

African dance. It offers an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.

Performances are much more than dance shows — they integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation.

The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding.

Walk to end Alzheimer’s raises nearly $43,000 The 2021 Michiana Walk to End Alzheimer’s reached its fundraising goal, raising $42,883 and counting to fight Alzheimer’s and other dementia. More than 200 residents participated in the walk Sept. 19 at Central Park in Mishawaka and by watching an online ceremony and walking from home in their own neighborhoods.

“We are grateful to all our sponsors, our volunteers and each and every participant who joined us — whether in person or at home,” said Abby Geha, manager, Michiana Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

“While the in-person event looked different than in years past, we heard from so many participants that coming together again — even with social distancing and other COVID precautions in place — meant a lot to them, especially after such a challenging year.”

Fundraising will continue through the end of the year, and those who didn’t participate can still donate at www.act.alz.org/ michiana.

“No one facing dementia should go through their journey alone,” said Natalie Sutton, executive director, Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. “We are here to support Hoosiers who are living with the disease and their families at every stage, from providing education about signs and symptoms to information on late-stage caregiving. Every dollar raised helps keep those programs available and free of charge.”

Museum hosting ‘Insights in History’ The History Museum is hosting “Then, Now, and Always: The St. Joseph River,” a documentary on the history of the St. Joseph River.

Center for Hospice Care announces staff certification Center for Hospice Care, a not-for-profit, community-based organization, announced the certification of 51 employees who completed specialized training to advance their knowledge of endof-life dementia care.

The goal is to have 75 staff members trained by the end of the year. These staff members are now certified as end-of-life dementia care professionals. This training seminar was provided to Center for Hospice Care by

CHC staff can better comprehend and verbalize the unique needs for those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia diseases, as well as identify dangers and areas of risk for caregivers.

Center for Hospice Care also owns Milton Adult Day Services, which is temporarily located at 3607 Grape Road, Mishawaka. As part of the com-

mitment to serve current and future area residents struggling with all neurological issues, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, it is repurposing its previous Roseland facility into Care Connections Center at Milton Village later this year.

Unique in concept and design, the facility incorporates input from world-renowned dementia care experts and will be able to care for up to 60 clients daily.

‘Peace Train’ brought a message of hope Cat Stevens Remember Cat Stevens?

He came to prominence here in the early 70s as a singer-songwriter responsible for such ethereal %\ 5$1'$/ ballads as & +,// “Peace Train,” “Wild World,” “Moon Shadow” and “Morning Has Broken.”

He was equally popular in his home country of England at the same time, but to his British fans he was probably more like Cat Stevens 2.0, a rocker revamped from the turbulent late 60s.

“Peace Train” was Stevens’s third entrée into the 1971 American Top Ten, the song being gleaned from his million-selling album ,”Teaser and the Firecat.” Arriving at a time of social upheaval (especially concerning the unpopular Vietnam conflict), “Peace Train” brought a message of hope and encouragement to his followers.

Infused with a Greek-influenced calypso beat and powered by handclaps, violins and a gospel-

tinged chorus, Cat’s hit offered an escape from the country’s malaise and a welcome to a world of tranquility and contentment via a metaphorical train ride. Who wouldn’t want to be on such a conveyance?

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948 in London, the youngest child of a Greek father and a Swedish mother, he developed a love of music and took to playing the family’s grand piano. But at 15, intoxicated by the success of the Beatles, he switched to the guitar and started creating tunes.

Stevens set his heart on becoming a songwriter in the same vein as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

He signed a publishing deal at 17 with a London music company and cut several original demos (demonstration records), including the future Tremeloes hit, “Here Comes My Baby,” along with “The First Cut is the Deepest,” recorded later by Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow. He changed his stage name to Cat Stevens, in part because a girlfriend claimed he had eyes like a cat. Also, he has said, he couldn’t imagine anyone going into a record store to ask for a Steven Demetre Georgiou album.

Never a standout student, Stevens later dropped out of art

college to become a velvet-suitwearing teen idol who placed three rock singles high on the British record charts. What followed for him was a schedule of personal appearances, recording sessions and an indulgence in the seductive (and often destructive) world of the rock star.

He contracted tuberculosis and landed in a London hospital for a yearlong recuperation. While taking stock of his life during that time, Stevens meditated, did yoga, became a vegetarian and considered different spiritual paths.

During his recovery, he composed numerous songs in an easygoing folk-pop style, his new works more intimate than the hard-edged rockers that had first brought him fame in the UK. “In the old days, I was more concerned with melody,” Stevens said later.

“Now it’s what I have to say.”

“Peace Train” became a fan favorite, and for a while Stevens ended every concert with his beloved (and still relevant) anthem, which opened with unabated optimism: “Now I’ve been happy lately/ Thinking about the good things to come “And I believe it could be/Something good has begun.”

With National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month kicking off Nov. 1, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is providing information to dispel common falsehoods about Alzheimer’s disease to help individuals know the warning signs, understand the importance of early detection and learn how to be proactive about reducing their risk.

“Dispelling the misconceptions about Alzheimer’s disease is critically important, because they may cause people to ignore symptoms and delay taking action which impacts their health and quality of life,” said Charles J. Here are five common falsehoods about Alzheimer’s disease: • Alzheimer’s is just part of getting older. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging — it is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that impacts memory, thinking and language skills and the ability to carry out simple tasks. It differs from regular agerelated memory loss, such as occasional forgetfulness. Each program addresses the unique needs of patients affected by these diseases, such as optimal nutrition while living with certain diseases, disease education for everyone that is customized, symptom management and medication management End stage heart disease and lung disease have comprised almost half of the diagnoses of all CHC patients. Both programs include the use of emotional, spiritual, and complementary approaches to care, as appropriate.

Center for Hospice Care’s HeartWize program for patients with advanced heart disease has shown tremendous results in reducing both emergency room visits and

hospital readmissions. This specialty program takes an interdisciplinary approach and includes the use of emotional and spiritual support for both patient and family. Specialized protocols and treatment pathways are designed for each patient. Over the past four years, CHC cared for 3,281 patients, who also participated in the HeartWize program, which is an option for optimal care management.

From 2016-2020, the program had a 99.6% effective rate of keeping patients from visiting the emergency room and a 99.2% rate of reducing hospitalization readmission.

Center for Hospice Care’s BreatheEazy program for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has shown tremendous results in reducing both emergency room visits and

hospital readmissions. Over the past four years, CHC cared for 2,461 patients who also participated in the BreatheEazy program.

From 2016-2020, the program had a 99.5% effective rate of keeping patients from visiting the emergency room and 97.7% rate of reducing hospitalization readmission.

Growing in faith through life’s journey Christine (Chris) Nowak is the director of clinical services and the clinical liaison at Catholic Charities. She has worked with them for the past three years.

Originally from central New York, the now South Bend resident says she can look back and see how the Holy Spirit has worked in her life, specifically in her move to South Bend to work at the University of Notre Dame and meeting her husband of 27 years.

“It’s those kind of events where there is no other rhyme or reason. I’ve really learned that it’s providence,” Nowak shared. “It’s just things are going to happen in such a way that, even though at the time

they may make no sense, I often look back and say, ‘Wow, this makes no sense, but this is why I had to be where I had to be.’”

She said prior to working at Catholic Charities she had thought about retiring, but life had other plans for her.

“I thought I was going to retire and then decided I’m not sure I want to retire,” Nowak said. “Needless to say I’m back at it full time.”

She also said her job allows her to be a part of a variety of things on a daily basis.

“Its a combination of lots of neat things. I’m involved with some of our Catholic schools, helping out there as a medical health clinician,” Nowak explained.

Through her work in the last year she has seen God work

through people by allowing them to remain strong, while over the years becoming more comfortable in seeking help from Catholic Charities.

“I believe as humans we are resilient,” Nowak said.“For as crazy as COVID has been, I think it has opened up people’s willingness to allow someone to come alongside them and give them that support.”

In addition to work, she and her husband attend Saint Joseph Parish in downtown South Bend and help out whenever they can.

“If there are ever opportunities that people ask for help or assistance or need something for an event, my husband and I are always willing to jump in,” Nowak stated.

While helping people is what she believes God has called her

to do, the way he communicates with her is through her intuition.

“My intuition tends to be pretty strong and I like to (interpret) that strong intuition as God’s very quiet voice. But sometimes it hits you upside the head to say, ‘Look, what are you doing?’” Nowak said.

She said when she listens to that intuition she finds her peace.

“I’ve learned that when I go against that intuition sense then I’m not happy, or at least I’m not at peace,” Nowak explained.

After losing her father about 10 years ago, she noticed an outpouring of love, community, friendship and support.

“That just doesn’t happen,” Nowak said.“I think I was very much touched by God’s pres-

I need to find someone to talk to about losing my loved one, but how do I choose the perfect therapist for me?

I can only describe it in the same way, as when I am trying to find the “perfect” pair of shoes. I know that sounds trivial, but it’s true.

Now, you know the shoes I am talking about. The ones that you could never part with.

They feel so good. Mostly because they’ve traveled with you through sunshine, rain, mud and maybe even dog poo, but they’re still the first choice for comfort when you need to get the job done and feeling good when wearing them.

So, when you are looking for someone to talk to, do what I did, when looking for that perfect pair of shoes. I went to my favorite shoe store, or in this case, my favorite mental health center. I went to the section that had my size — meaning I asked who was there that specialized in helping with grief.

Then I looked them all over carefully — meaning I read up on the therapists, seeing what they had to offer.

I chose the pair I liked the best. Then, just like my shoes, I tried them on. I had to wear them for a while, because

sometimes the shoes look perfect — until you wear them for a while. Sometimes they stretch out and are too loose.

Sometimes they do not stretch enough and they are too tight and your toes are squished, and sometimes (for some unknown or detectable reason) they just don’t quite fit as perfectly as you thought they would. So, what do you do? Go back to the store and look for another pair, and try those on, and try and break them in, or

maybe go to another store and take a look at what they have to offer.

There are many therapists out there and many places that want to help us through our grief. Sometimes you just have to keep looking, and if you do, you will find that perfect person. Just like the favorite pair of shoes in the closet. You know the ones, the ones that make you feel your best, before, during and after wearing them.

It’s a tenet of investing: if you don’t understand the company or product and what it does, drop it and move on to something else.

Which makes the Bitcoin story totally bizarre. Not only is it understood by a select group of financial high flyers, no one is really sure who started it.

Since the Bitcoin’s birth a dozen years ago, it’s traveled a bumpy road that stretches from a price of $400 five years ago to more than $60,000 earlier this year. Along the way it dropped to $4,000 in 2019 from $19,000 two years earlier.

But not to worry, if Bitcoin sounds a bit scary, there are more than 6,500 other cryptocurrencies on the market.

None of these currencies

involve printing presses. They exist only in computers — cyberspace. Like Bitcoin, you can’t store any of it under your mattress.

There is a growing industry servicing the spending of Bitcoins after you buy them. They’re readily available at thousands of automated teller machines around the country.

The value of Bitcoin rises only if there’s a demand for it. If no one wants it, the value drops — dramatically.

If Bitcoin doesn’t catch your fancy, you can purchase Ethereum, Litecoin, Stellar, Polkadot, Cardano and, as pointed out earlier, thousands of

other options.

And there’s a whole new language involved.

For example, Ethereum

claims to be “a decentralized software platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (dapps) to be built and run without any downtime, fraud, control, or

interference from a third party.

“The goal behind Ethereum is to create a decentralized suite of financial products that anyone in the world can freely access, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or faith.”

Did you get all that?

Transactions are conducted through a digital ledger called a blockchain. This involves a worldwide computer network that stores the virtual money in a digital wallet.

A lure of cryptocurrency is the ability of blockchain to process and record software

programs that facilitate global transactions almost instantaneously. It’s a way to transfer large sums of money around the world without an intermediary.

For example, it takes five days to transmit cross-border payments at an average fee of more than 6 percent, accounting for a $4 trillion business globally. Bitcoin cuts the transfer time down to about 10 minutes. Fees vary for the various currency forms. Some are no fee.

If you feel you understand the function of virtual currencies and see them as part of your financial future, make sure you understand the beginning, middle and end of what can happen to your money if you think you’d like to get involved and invest.

Big, powerful monsters displayed at Butler museum They’re big … huge, in fact!

They’re powerful and colorful.

They’re monsters … monster trucks, that is! And you can view them and learn all about the monster truck phenomenon at the Monster Truck Museum in Butler.

You may have seen monster

trucks on television racing around a track, jumping over mounds of dirt and crashing down on a line of old cars.

But when standing next to the five-foot-six-inch-tall tires weighing 800 pounds and costing $2,000 to $5,000 each, one really can’t help but be

impressed with their sheer size. The driver sits in a cab that’s almost as tall as the floor of a second story house and he has to get in by climbing up the massive treads on the tires.

The museum, which spent the first 10 years of its ex-

istence at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn, moved into the former Butler Eagles Lodge in late 2020 and held its grand opening in May. The seven rotating monsters in the collection, along with a few other special vehicles, were transported up I-69 to

Since COVID delayed their trip for almost two years, the pair had anticipated the Mississippi riverboat cruise aboard the ship named Twilight for awhile.

On their cruise the couple departed from LeClaire, Iowa and travelled to Dubuque, Iowa. On board, passengers partake in various activities, including live entertainment, games and meals.

Once reaching Dubuque passengers disembark and are free to explore this historical city.

Dubuque has a rich history, impressive architecture, a motley of shopping options and other attractions, such as the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. This museum showcases the history, culture, life and ecosystems of the Mississippi River. The most recent addition to the museum arrived in mid*5($7 August. It’s (6&$3(6 owned by Hull Broth- 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 52' .,1* ers Racing of Champaign, Illinois, and is called Heavy Metal because it’s built on an M-4 Sherman tank chassis complete with tank tracks. Also on display is a jet-black truck built on an International Harvester Scout chassis by museum co-founder and president Jeff Cook as a promotion vehicle for the popular television series, “The Walking Dead.”

Visitors can also see his 1977 Scout monster truck.

You’ll be greeted at the entrance by Chris Allen, the museum curator/tour guide and monster truck walking encyclopedia. He’ll not only explain the history of monster trucks, starting with big off-road trucks fitted out with tires from farm fertilizer equipment crushing cars, to the three stages of weights from 16,000 pounds down to a more manageable 12,000 pounds, to the evolution of suspension systems and fourwheel steering.

According to Allen, the pinnacle of monster trucking came in the 1990s. The advent of four-wheel steering allowed drivers to do wheelies, make tighter turns and do more free-styling moves, which made for much more exciting racing. Television coverage brought the sport to a much wider audience and started to garner an enthusiastic following.

One such event was at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn. Dean Kruse, owner of the plaza at the time, saw what a big attraction the monster trucks were and asked if Cook would like to display them permanently at the Auburn facility. In 2010 the Monster Truck Museum officially became a reality.

The following year the museum held it first Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The new facility has an entire wall of plaques honoring drivers, builders, promoters and announcers. A new group will be inducted this month.

Two shows are planned for 2022, in September and May.

Is it possible the bottle was specifically made for use in the Ball Band cafeteria for the thousands of employees who passed through each shift and chose to drink milk with their meals?

It’s likely that a third quart was just the right size to drink with the employees’ meal. When the bottle was empty, the employee could return it to the dirty dishes section and it could be returned to a local dairy for refilling.

That dairy even remains a mystery to this writer and to a fellow writer and historian.

The employees who worked in the Ball Band cafeteria in 1948 are all gone now and their answer to the mystery of this milk bottle is lost to Ball Band history. Only their descendants may know the answer behind the “Ball Band Plant” milk bottle.

A “Ball Band Red Ball” newsletter of Oct. 15, 1948, may provide some clues to this mystery. A special event occurred this October as the cafeteria workers were on hand to present a gift to returning staff member Mable Fields.

Perhaps there are children of the 1948 cafeteria workers who could provide answers to the milk bottle mystery. Was the bottle actually used in the cafeteria and what local dairy refilled the bottles with milk?

Will some answers come forth from any reader who recognizes any of the workers in the accompanying photo of the cafeteria workers in this story?
