Enhancing Millersburg was formed in 2016 by a group of citizens focused on revitalizing the town’s historic downtown district. “Our focus is building a community of citizens dedicated to enhancing the town of Millersburg through economic and social improvement of the downtown district while preserving the historic fabric of our community,” Eldridge explained, illustrating the paradoxical situation many smaller communities face: How to grow without compromising that small town feel. The seeds of Enhancing Millersburg were planted around 2016. “As superintendent one of my responsibilities is community development. I contacted the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs who oversee the Indiana Main Street program, which encourages community-driven revitalization of downtown areas in Indiana cities and

towns. After the meeting with OCRA I enlisted the help of local business leaders and residents interested in moving Millersburg towards and Indiana Main Street designation.” The group has achieved 501c3 status and continues to work toward the Indiana Main Street designation. In doing so, it has completed numerous revitalization projects, including the reconstruction of Millersburg’s town square, a pocket park located across from town hall, repaving of Washington Street, new downtown sidewalks and an art alley. “We try to do one project a year,” said Eldridge. “In 2022, we will be working with the town to build a new farmers market on the site where the old town hall used to sit. Eldridge envisions a multi-purpose pavilion using locally harvested wood and local farmers to provide farm-to-table products at the market. So far, the project Eldridge is most proud of is Art Alley, located off of Washington Street. “Enhancing Millersburg worked with the town and applied for a grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. Five Little Stones, a small school that works with challenged youth applied for a grant from LaGrange County Community Foundation and

were able to add a ‘hands-on’ outside lab located at the south end of the alley for their students to work in.” Fairfield High School also contributed, painting murals on the east side of the alley. “We hope the community takes advantage of this revitalized area,” Eldridge stated. As park superintendent, Eldridge has also overseen the additions of a basketball court, concrete cornhole boards and refurbished volleyball courts and baseball diamonds. “We are working to start summer leagues for volleyball, softball and cornhole,” he added. “We are hoping to have a designated day once a month for food trucks in our downtown

and I am working on a Chalk the Block community event for the summer of 2022.” Of course, funding is Enhancing Millersburg’s biggest challenge. According to Eldridge, 100 percent of the group’s donations or grants go “right back into the community in the form of revitalization projects.” “Enhancing Millersburg is a huge part of our town goals to make our town a place people and businesses want to come to,” noted Town Manager Jim Winkler. “We have enhanced our uptown and our 23-acre park with a number of additions that provide a safe place for people and children to enjoy.”
