worth one point. Donations can be dropped off until the end of the challenge at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2. In the end, the winner is awarded with a monetary donation, provided by an anonymous donor, to the Wa-Nee school of their choice. Kitson said on average, 10-12 businesses have participated in the challenge. “All the items we collect for our senior citizens will be distributed through Elder Haus Senior Center and The Center (Family Christian Development Center),” he noted. “If you bring in new, unwrapped items to fill the ‘Support Our Seniors’ box, you will received one point for each item you bring in.” Items especially needed for seniors include shampoo, lotion, candy, perfume,

What started several years ago as a simple request to place a Toys for Tots drop-off box at the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce has blossomed into a much greater blessing for many people in the local community. Thanks in great part to the vision and efforts of Executive Director Jeff Kitson, “Jeff’s Annual Toy Challenge” now includes items for seniors as well as for children. The first couple of years Kitson noticed the box was virtually empty when the time came for it to be picked. He decided to turn it into a friendly competition between local businesses and individuals to try to stimulate the holiday spirit. Three years ago, the challenge was expanded to include the community’s senior citizens as well. “We didn’t want to forget about our seniors,” Kitson said. “They’re so often overlooked and often times small things mean so much to them, especially those who have have a difficult time getting out in the winter or are homebound. We wanted to provide a spot of hope for them so that they know they are still loved in our community.” The challenge is simple: each donation brought to the chamber is

toiletries, crossword puzzles, games, puzzles, word search books, Tylenol and $15-20 gift cards. Additionally bonus points are awarded by selfies and photo posts of the Nappanee Chamber’s Facebook page. “Seniors still need our love and support,” he emphasized. “Some aren’t as affluent as others but everyone deserves joy during the Christmas season. I visit Elder Haus often. The people there don’t care about your age, color of skin or economics. They just need someone to be there to spend some time with. “Since my own grandpa

passed away, I’ve realized how important it is to sit and listen to their stories. We need to honor our seniors and let them know that we are listening.” Last year was the first year a donation was made to a local school. “It’s not enough to break out the champagne, but it’s another way to give back so everyone can have a little better Christmas season.” Kitson said there are many seniors who are in need who are too proud or humble to ask for help, which is why they rely on Elder Haus and The Center to help distribute it to the people who are in need. “Rex and Beth Hershberger and Mark Mikel know their clientele and get it done quietly. These items mean the world to them. No one should be written off because of their age, young or old.” Donations for both seniors and kids are accepted until 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.
