HONOR FLIGHT %\ %/$,5 %$80*$571(5 6WDII :ULWHU Honor Flight Northeast Indiana honored a group of local veterans by escorting them on an Honor Flight and tour of Washington D.C., on Wednesday, June 8.

The veterans arrived at the 122nd Air National Guard base in Fort Wayne early Wednesday morning and boarded an American Airlines Airbus A321 to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Carolyn Gunder’s career in the United States Navy started on Jan. 4, 1960, and concluded on May 28, 1980. She never imagined having the chance to travel back to Washington D.C. “I had not been to Washington D.C. since my first duty station right out of boot camp in the early 1960s and was honored and excited to have the opportunity to go back,” Gunder said. “I don’t always show my excitement, but I was excited. I can’t even describe to you how touching it was.

When we visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial, several veterans just stood there and cried.”

Wilson makes career in watersports %\ %/$,5 %$80*$571(5 6WDII :ULWHU

Mike Wilson graduated from Manchester University in 1976 and became a full-time teacher and coach in Wakarusa.

His parents bought a cottage on Lake Webster and Wilson started living there during the summer months. Wilson started working for Bart’s Watersports during the summer of 1978. He loved working as a teacher and coaching basketball, but wanted to continue working through the summer months.

Little did Wilson know that his summer job would turn into a blossoming career opportunity. Wilson started working at Bart’s several evenings a week while he was still teaching and coaching basketball. He continued to work during the school year and even worked weekends as well. He spent many years getting to know the business and customers.

In 1986, Bart’s offered Wilson a gig as the general manager.

Wilson turned them down. He enjoyed teaching and coaching basketball way too much.

Bart’s offered again in 1988 and Wilson finally accepted.

Wilson has served Kosciusko County lakers for more than 40 years and has worn many

different hats. His job has entailed everything from customer service, refunds and exchange, sales and shipping, managing employees, purchasing and merchandising, to deciding what products would be part of the company’s catalogs. He said, “I never really did much bookkeeping or accounts payable, but I oversee things. I really don’t have much to do with technology either.” What he has enjoyed most, though, is working with his staff and getting to know many longtime customers.

All four of Wilson’s kids have worked at Bart’s Watersports.

Wilson said, “I love the people I work with. There is not much turnover. It’s really like a family … I enjoy meeting and hiring the college students who work here in the summer. Bart’s typically employs three times the staff during the summer months.

“Many college students have met their spouse working at Bart’s in the summer, including my son R.J. … I actually chose his spouse for him before he did,” he said with a laugh.

“I think we’ve had at least six couples meet here during the summer months as employees and end up getting married.”

known for years still regularly visit the store. There are many other customers that I recognize their names and faces … It’s not like they’re buying milk or gas.

They really love our products and enjoy their experience.

Another rewarding aspect of my career is knowing that our products help families create memories at the lakes in the summer. Families really come

together and are able to spend time together.”

Wilson has created many long lasting relationships over his many years serving Kosciusko County lakers. One can tell Wilson has deeply valued those relationships and sense the satisfaction in his voice. What started as a summer position became a long-lasting and very rewarding career.

Birky helps to bring unique collection to library %\ .(,7+ .1(33 (GLWRU If you haven’t been to your local library in the last several years, the chances are pretty good that lots of things have changed since your last visit.

That’s definitely true if you are part of the Nappanee Public Library. One person who has seen and been an integral part of many of those changes is Pat Birky.

Birky started as a non-traditional college intern during the summer of 1996. She became an employee the following year and was a library employee until 2000, at which point she moved to Oregon for two years. She returned to Nappanee two years later and restarted her library work as a part-time employee to supplement her full-time gig at NorthWood High School. In 2008, she left the school and took on a full-time role at the library.

During her two stints, many things have changed. She’s been under the direction of four different directors, each of whom had a different style and vision for the library. But one thing has been constant through the years — a desire to

evolve the library into a place where community members feel welcome and their needs are being met.

Through her years at NPL, Birky has held nearly every role imaginable, from working on the frontline helping patrons to working behind the scenes ordering new materials for the library’s extensive collection. Currently she is responsible for maintaining many of the library’s digital databases, including Hoopla, which allows the library’s resident card holders to access movies, music, audiobooks and books on demand, using their phone, tablet or computer. The library also is part of a statewide consortium utilizing the Libby app, which also allows users access to a wide range of materials online.

Although many of the library’s available materials are now digital, Birky says there will always be a demand for books in their printed form.

“People of all ages, seniors, adults, parents and kids come in to the library to borrow our printed materials,” she said.

“There’s nothing like the smell of a new book!”

However, books aren’t the only things that can be checked

out at the Nappanee library.

Through the years the lending collection has evolved to include movies, CDs and audiobooks. It also expanded to include artwork, cake pans, games and puzzles. However, in the last few years resident cardholders have been able to borrow things such as Instapots, robotic vacuums, yard games, air fryers, therapeutic lamps, telescopes, internet hotspots, metal detectors and even electric leaf blowers.

The development of what Birky termed the “library of things” is one of her favorite parts of her job.

“The non-traditional things that we loan allow people to try things out,” she said. “Maybe they don’t know if they’d like to cook in an air fryer. This allows them to try it out. It also allows people with limited budgets or storage space to borrow a piece of equipment that they might only need for a short period of time.”

Another of Birky’s current projects is changing the way the library catalog’s its nonfiction book collection. Nappanee is one of many library’s that is moving away from the traditional but very confusing Dewey Decimal system and

When she retired from the Navy in 1980, she enjoyed a career in administration. She is currently the commander of American Legion Post 223 in Syracuse. United States Marine Corps and Indiana Army National Guard veteran Chris Longenbaugh accompanied Gunder to D.C. and was her guardian for the day.

Korean War veteran Leo R. Youngs, who currently resides in Florida, and his son, United States Army 82nd Airborne veteran Leo H. Youngs, were also on the flight.

“We had a wonderful time,” said the son. “Everywhere we went people were so appreciative, respectful and thanking us for our service. My father was supposed to be on this flight two years ago, but then COVID happened, so the flight was postponed.”

One of the best experiences of the day was during the return flight to Fort Wayne. “There was a mail call, which the veterans did not know about, and they distributed mail from appreciative adults and children, thanking us for our service,” said the elder Youngs, who served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956.

Birky encourages everyone to visit their community’s library to see what has changed. She added that the employees are there to help and answer questions, such as how to use their phones for various library apps such as Libby.

Babb said, “You can imagine how much planning takes place to organize 125 veterans and their guardians for a flight and tour of D.C., especially since about 25% of the veterans required wheelchairs or crutches.”

Some of the highlights of Babb’s day included visiting Arlington National Cemetery, the United States Air Force Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Marine Corps changing of the guard ceremony and the World War II, Korean and Vietnam War memorials. Babb stated this day was personal for him because his two brothers,

both Army veterans, are now deceased. “I felt like I represented them today.”

He said when they arrived in D.C., there were lines of people clapping and cheering. Reminiscing about the day, he said, “A guy could spend a month in D.C. and still not see everything … it means a lot more to me now than before I was able to make this trip.”

Cutting remarks I see women in my neighborhood mowing their lawns.

My wife doesn’t mow our lawn. I don’t think she will ever ,1 $ mow the 1876+(// lawn. Lawn %\ ',&. mowing sea:2/)6,( son is here and it just kinda drives me crazy trying to figure out why she won’t mow the lawn.

I want to ask her about this, but I am afraid she’ll assume I want her to mow the lawn. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. If she started mowing

the lawn, that would jeopardize our relationship by altering the delicate balance between her independence and her femininity.

If she really wanted to mow the lawn, I wouldn’t stop her.

Don’t misunderstand. I am not accusing my wife of being lazy. She takes on a great deal of responsibility. She is in charge of all the family finances, is on several boards, does all the shopping and prepares dinner for me almost every night.

She also monitors both of our medical appointments.

I’m just really curious to know the reason she won’t mow the lawn.

When I married Mary Ellen, it didn’t matter that she had no interest in mowing. After all, she was intelligent, beautiful, sensitive and caring. It was all a man could want. I just assumed that if shove came to push she’d mow the lawn.

The first year we were married, we lived in an apartment and she really had no opportunity to hone this skill. Then we moved to a condo and the lawn was cut for us. When we moved to our first house, the lawn was pretty big and that’s when our son was born, so expecting her to mow and bottle feed at the same time would have been asking too much.

To be honest, I probably

wouldn’t enjoy seeing my wife out there huffing and puffing and sweating. Of course, I wouldn’t have to watch. And when she finished, she could just freshen up before dinner.

There are some days, especially in the summer, when I’d like to just sit on a lounge chair and sip lemonade, but instead I have to mow the lawn. That’s where a wife who’s willing to mow comes in really handy. Not that I’d want her to.

It’s really chauvinistic for a man to make his wife mow the lawn. On the other hand, it’s also chauvinistic for a man to assume that a woman can’t or won’t mow the lawn, so I guess I should at least ask her.

Maybe she really wants to mow but is afraid I won’t let her.

And maybe she thinks she’s not strong enough. But those new mowers kind of guide themselves. They require very little strength. I’m sure that if she just knew the state-of-theart technology available, she’d jump at the chance to mow the lawn.

Now, my friend, Jeff—his wife mows the lawn. He was over the other day and he asked me why Mary Ellen never mows the lawn. I was as honest with him as I could be …

“I don’t know, Jeff. I never really thought about it.”

$30 Million announced for KCH Lutheran Health Network leadership has announced a $30 million investment toward expansion and modernization of its Kosciusko hospital along with renaming the facility to reinforce the importance of the Warsaw area in the regional integrated health system.

Alan Alderfer, board chair for Kosciusko Community Hospital, and Scott Teffeteller, market CEO for Lutheran Health Network, presented plans to community leaders at a recent breakfast for the expansion and renovation of the facility and campus, which has been the area’s only fullservice hospital since 1976.

Due to rapidly growing demand for the hospital’s surgical services, the project will improve and expand pre-and post-surgical areas as well as refresh the surgical area. In addition to the surgical services improvements, the investment will include updates to the hospital’s inpatient units, main lobby and exterior.

Additionally, the hospital will be renamed Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital to reinforce its connection to Lutheran Health Network.

“Lutheran Health Network is committed to the residents of Kosciusko County and the surrounding area,” Teffeteller said. “Our patients are at the center of everything we do and know we understand how important it is to them to receive quality care close to home.”

The project will result in an additional 13,600 square feet being added to the 170,000-square-foot hospital. Specific improvements include: • Surgical services expansion and updates.

• New, larger pre-and-post

surgical bays with three additional spaces for better patient privacy and more room for family members to be with loved ones.

• Expanded sterile processing area with new technology for faster equipment sterilization.

• Renovation of existing operating room so surgeons can accommodate more complex cases, allowing patients to be scheduled sooner and remain close to home when surgery is needed.

• An expanded, redesigned customer-friendly lobby.

• Renovations to all patient rooms, public spaces and nursing stations on the medical, surgical and intensive care units.

• Updates to the hospital facade.

• Parking lot expansion and resurfacing.

• New campus exterior signage to improve patient wayfinding.

The refresh of patient units began this month and is expected to be completed in spring 2023. A timeline

for the other elements of the project will be finalized later this year.

Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital offers a variety of services, including emergency care, heart and stroke care (including a cardiac catheterization lab), surgical services, orthopedics, occupational health, rehabilitation services,

a sleep center, a wound care center and a comprehensive cancer care center providing chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It also has the only emergency department in the county with accredited chest pain and stroke centers.

That’s my advice. And that’s probably why debtors aren’t breaking down my door seeking counsel on how to improve their economic situations.

You should know, however, I’m as qualified as most fellows or firms who hang up a shingle proclaiming to be a debt counselor, money manager, financial advisor or investment guru. There are no criteria or qualifications required, even though you should seek out someone with a title like that to help you pay your bills.

There’s plenty of help out there. They charge you a couple of hundred bucks an hour to help you write checks, sort out your debtors, establish priorities and balance your checkbook.

We’re not talking about investment assistance and portfolio management. We’re dealing with ways to get out and stay out of debt.

What you really need is some sort of disciplined and organized approach to whittling away at your financial burden. It may be you’ve never learned sound money management manners.

Perhaps you’ve lost your spouse, through death or divorce, who handled all the family finances.

Or maybe you have no idea how you wound up in such a pecuniary position.

You need help. But let’s review a few matters before you begin shopping for financial assistance.

You have to determine just how much trouble you’re in.

First of all, how long could you survive without any income — if you missed your next paycheck, Social Security check or company

pension check? Don’t feel stupid if you don’t know the answer. Most people don’t. But it’s a vital fiscal warning sign.

There are others: • Your credit card bills exceed 20% of your net income.

• You borrow money to pay off existing debt. It’s not funny if you have to “rob Peter to pay Paul.”

• You run out of cash between paydays.

• You make only minimum payments on credit card debt.

If you can’t at least double the minimum payment, you’re in a financial bind.

• You carry more than four credit cards. You only need two because one or the other will be accepted no matter where you go.

• You want and ask for a higher credit limit on your cards.

Now you can look for someone to help you get out debt, not borrow more money to help pay your bills.

Start by asking someone who has already used such a service.

Or check with an attorney or accountant you trust. When you have some names to work with, check them out with the local

Better Business Bureau and chamber of commerce. Ask for at least three references and check them out. Ask for the names of at least three current clients and talk with them.

You also need to determine how you and the prospective money manager will get along. It’s important you do because you’ll be working closely on solving your problem. You must be able to discuss goals and options objectively.

Make certain you know how much you will be charged for their services. And what you will get in return.

Will he or she arrange your income tax documents as part of the service or will that be extra? Do you need him or her to write your checks or can you do that yourself (and save money) after you’ve held your weekly/ monthly meeting? Do you have to meet regularly or do you meet only when you, or they, think it’s necessary?

If you think you have financial problems, you probably do. The time to begin solving them is right now.

Unfortunately, much of this money goes uncollected every year. Veteran Aid and Attendance assisted living benefits could make life so much easier for veterans and their surviving spouses by helping defray the cost of senior living. But many simply don’t know they qualify.

Qualifying to receive Aid and Attendance benefits depends on three simple criteria. Veterans and surviving spouses of veterans who qualify must: 1. Have been honorably discharged after serving a minimum of 90 days of consecutive active duty, including at least one day in a wartime period.

2. Possess assets amounting to no more than $80,000. Since this amount is calculated by deducting all recurring medical expenses from total income, applicants with widely varying income levels may qualify.

3. Can show a doctor’s letter stating their medical diagnosis and assistance requirements.

If a law should change, the Trust Protector has the ability to amend the trust to conform to the changes. and “trust” interchangeably, but they are very different. In many cases, it’s wise to have a will and trust as components of an estate plan.

Both a will and trust allow you to make your wishes known; choose a person to settle affairs; and decide who receives assets.

The differences are: A will does not take effect until death, whereas a trust takes effect immediately.

If you become incapacitated and have only a will, the court will appoint a guardian to manage your affairs.

Trusts allow you to serve as trustee during your lifetime. If you become incapacitated, your named successor manages assets.

Upon death, wills are submitted to the court for administration. Probate is the process that distributes assets to your named beneficiaries.

If you have a trust, your trustee will manage and distribute assets according to the terms of your trust.

It’s important to work with a professional to determine how best to protect your assets and beneficiaries.

Dave and Carolyn Elliott make fitness a lifestyle %\ %/$,5 %$80*$571(5 6WDII :ULWHU Dave and Carolyn Elliott of Syracuse have always made fitness part of their lifestyle.

The couple has participated in numerous sports and fitness activities over the course of their lifetimes.

Carolyn said her typical week includes aerobics, weightlifting, squats and crunches, biking, gardening and, of course, pickleball.

Luckily for her, Dave is just as active, and he also has developed a passion for pickleball.

Dave’s week includes strength training, biking at least 80 miles and plenty of pickleball. “Growing up I loved playing basketball. I actually used to play with Joe Baumgartner. We played a lot of basketball. I always saw the value in staying fit and moving forward in life, and I made all of these activities a part of my lifestyle,” said Dave.

“Staying fit allows me to do what I want to do. I don’t want my body to take my life hostage. If we live by faith, that shows up in every part of our lives, and I want to make the most of what I’ve been given by God.” Dave elaborated by saying, “I want to be a good steward of what God’s given me because I’m not guaranteed tomorrow.”

Carolyn said, “One of the most important reasons I stay fit is so I can enjoy these activities with my kids and

grandkids.” When asked how she started playing pickleball, she said, “I started going to the Syracuse Community Center at least 10 years ago and started learning how to play there. I talked Dave into joining and we really liked it. We decided we wanted our own area so we could play whenever we want.” She went on to say, “Our kids and grandkids play and it’s a great way to spend time with them and make memories. This is the third summer of having our own pickleball court.”

Dave said, “We have D-Day once a week. Denny, Duane, Don and myself all play pickleball. They’re all good friends. We get pretty raucous, but it’s a lot of fun …

We also have a friend who has a pickleball court nearby.

Sometimes we have people playing on both courts at the same time.” Reflecting on how thankful he is to be able to still participate in different sports, he said, “It’s an incredible enabler to continue to be of use to others if the need arises, so I can actually contribute.”

Carolyn was able to be her granddaughter’s physical education teacher. “She’s homeschooled … She used to say she was coming to grammy’s torture chamber for P.E.,” she said with a laugh.

Both Dave and Carolyn are thankful for their health and that God has blessed them to be able to continue staying

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ‘nice’ cream

No, it’s not misspelled; ‘nice’ cream is the colloquial term for vegetarian or vegan ice cream, meaning non-dairy. It doesn’t taste exactly like creamy ice cream, but more like a creamy sorbet and a lot healthier for you than creamy ice cream.

The very basic recipe for two servings is 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup frozen fruit and up to ¼ cup non-dairy milk, such as coconut milk. The flavorful varieties are endless.

Start by peeling and cutting up 2-3 ripe bananas into about 6 pieces each; wrap in plastic wrap and freeze at least 3 hours. Then chop and freeze whatever other fruit you may want to add. Upon removing the bananas from the freezer, let them set out for 5 minutes before putting them in either the food processor or high-power blender. Pulse until bananas are blended with some small pieces left chunky. Some people like to add a dash of salt and/or ¼ teaspoon of vanilla at this point. You may need to add

up to ¼ cup of any non-dairy (or dairy) milk if it begins to ice up or is too thick.

To this basic recipe, add something from below, or have fun creating flavors of your own.

Chocolate Nice Cream — 3 tablespoons cocoa powder.

Mocha Nice Cream — 3 tablespoons cocoa powder plus 1 teaspoon instant coffee.

Mint Chocolate Chip — 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract.

Stir in chocolate chips after blending is complete.

Tropical — ½ cup frozen mango plus ½ cup frozen pineapple.

Add pineapple juice instead of non-dairy milk if needed.

Options — a scoop of nondairy protein, 1-2 tablespoons of peanut or other nut butter,

Once you complete the blending process you may serve it or put in the freezer 30-60 minutes to achieve a more scoopable

consistency. Nice cream can be stored in a freezer container for a couple months. It is best to let it sit out about 10 minutes before serving.

‘You don’t mess around with Jim’ In Jim Croce’s brief career — he died at age 30 in a 1973 Louisiana plane crash — Croce released $ %RRPHU %ODVW five Top 7R 7KH 3DVW 10 singles, %\ 5$1'$/ the first of & +,// which was one of the best story songs of modern times.

“You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” on the ABC label brought music fans into Jim Croce’s fun-loving world, one that was often replete with rather bizarre (but always memorable) characters.

Born in Philadelphia, Croce played the accordion before switching to guitar. After high school, he attended Villanova University, where he worked as a guitarist in numerous bands. He graduated college in 1965, became a guitar instructor at summer camps and briefly taught at a Philadelphia middle school.

(One undocumented story has Croce being beaten up by a 250-pound girl student in front of the class.)

He met Ingrid Jacobson at a folk music party in 1966. They married and began writing and recording their own compositions, frequently touring and trying in vain to catch a break. Eventually discouraged, the Croces settled onto a Pennsylvania farm with their infant son, Adrian. Croce drove trucks and worked construction while Ingrid finished college. All the while, Croce continued to write songs, never abandoning a lifelong dream of having a music career one day.

He turned to selling advertising time on Philadelphia radio stations. His work occasionally took him into the darker corners of the city, where he would sometimes

visit less-than-savory pool halls. Ingrid recalled later, “He would sit there and watch the pool games and see what people were doing. He ended up with a guy named Jim Walker, who was one of the guys who used to play pool there.”

And what a character Big Jim Walker became in “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim”!

In Croce’s mind, he imagined a cartoonish version of an intimidating New York City pool hustler — big and dumb as a man can come, but he’s stronger than a country hoss. Walker reigns supreme around town as “the King of 42nd Street” and he cruises his domain in a “drop top” Cadillac.

As the story unfolds, we learn that Big Jim hustles people for money with his well-honed pool skills. But one day, a southern boy nicknamed Slim comes to

Hart enjoying new opportunities at ‘The Park at Grace’ %\ .(,7+ .1(33 (GLWRU Admittedly, the past few years have been difficult for Georgia Hart. The Elkhart resident provided care for her husband, Dave Bateson, as he struggled with dementia until his death in September 2020. A few months later, she lost her job in an Elkhart dress store. Through it all, however, Hart never lost her faith.

Knowing her employment situation, her pastor at Grace Community Church in Goshen asked if she would be interested in taking on the role of director of The Park at Grace, a popular indoor playground at the church.

The park, which is free to the public and used by the church as part of its community outreach, has been open since 2018 but temporarily closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. Hart started in her new role April 1, 2021, six days before the park reopened to the public.

Hart’s life took another unexpected turn in May 2021 when she reconnected with David Hart, a man she dated while in high school in Middlebury. She said he joined the Army right after high school and went to Vietnam and broke up with her before he departed. The reunited couple married in August 2021.

According to Hart, attendance at The Park at Grace is back to where it was pre-pandemic. They average between 50-80 kids in the morning session and about the same number in the evening, with increased attendance dur-

ing the Saturday session. The numbers vary depending on the time of year and the weather outside. It is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday; 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and noon to 5 p.m.

Saturday. Hart is present during most of the park’s open hours, unless she has another commitment. The park also has a party room that can be rented for small groups that is available during its regularly open hours.

The thing Hart loves most about working at the park is the children. “If you love them, they will love you back,” she said. “I’ve made some new friends, especially kids. When they smile at you or give a hug it makes it all worthwhile. We have a day care group that comes in on Thursday mornings. When the kids come in, they always say good morning, and when they leave the give me a hug.”

Prior to her first husband’s illness, Hart spent time as a Bible quiz coordinator and coach.

She enjoyed working with the students and worked with some of them at the national level. She also spent 15 1/2 years as secretary at Grace Church in Osceola.

There are a small group of volunteers who help run the park, although Hart said that number has decreased since before the pandemic. She said volunteers are difficult to come by, and anyone is welcome to contact her about giving some of their time to the playground. Anyone interested can email her at thepark@gc.church.

When she’s not at the park, Hart enjoys sewing, crocheting and spending time with her family, which includes two children, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-

grandchildren, most of whom live in the area.

“I’m a firm believer in Jesus Christ and would not be where I am today without his protection and his grace,” she said. “Walking through dementia with my late husband was a dark place, but I always knew God would take care of me and provide. He’s still doing that.”

Elkhart Civic Theatre announces 2022-23 season The Elkhart Civic Theatre at Bristol Opera House has announced its schedule for the 2022-23 season.

Concord High grad publishes poetry book %\ '5 *5(* /$:621 3DVWRU 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU The old saying, Join the Navy and See the World, is certainly applicable to May 1974 Concord High School graduate, Steven J. Bowers. After “marching” across the high school stage to receive his diploma, Steve marched off to Navy boot camp the following month in June to begin his Navy career.

In an interview by this writer (coincidently his first cousin), Steve related the beginning of his naval career: “Following boot camp, Radioman ‘A’ school and International Morse Code School in San Diego, Calif., he reported aboard the USS Newport — LST 1179 — home ported Little Creek, Va., in April 1975.” While on the Newport, Steve served “as a communication operator and supervisor…”

Various amphibious exercises took Steve throughout “the Caribbean, North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, with ports of call in ‘areas of Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Cuba, France,

England, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sicily, Lebanon and Greece.’”

Perhaps the most exciting, if not dangerous, exercise of his career occurred in the summer of 1976 when extensive civil disruption resulted in “an attack on the American Attache’ office in Lebanon.” As this was happening, Steve “participated in the total evacuation and transport of American citizens from Beirut and escorted them to safety in Athens, Greece.” For his help, he received an award: the “Navy’s Humanitarian Medal.”

During his naval career, Steve completed training in areas too numerous to mention, which allowed him to rise in ranks: some training too secretive and sensitive to mention in this story.

At the end of his 26 years in the Navy, we cousins can now call Steve “Senior Chief Petty Officer.”

We can honestly realize that “His leadership, professional guidance and sincere caring for his fellow sailor had long-lasting effects for the men and women he served with and still proudly calls his shipmates.”

Patients, physicians report medical errors %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Ten percent of the deaths in this nation are the result of medical error, making it the third largest cause of death after heart disease and cancer.

As much as half of the population and more than one-third of U.S. doctors report experiencing medical errors in some fashion.

Analyzing medical death rate data over an eight-year period, Johns Hopkins patient safety experts have calculated that

more than 250,000 deaths per year are due to medical error in the U.S. Their figure surpasses the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s third leading cause of death — respiratory disease, which kills close to 150,000 people a year.

The Johns Hopkins team says the CDC’s way of collecting national health statistics fails to classify medical errors separately on the death certificate.

The researchers are advocating for updated criteria for classifying deaths on death certificates.

Incidence rates for deaths

Be wary of over-thecounter medication %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Some over-the-counter medications can make the summer heat more dangerous. Antihistamines, found in cold and allergy medicines, can make the body sweat less, potentially accelerating heat-related illnesses.

These medications cause the mucus membranes in the body to dry up. Since sweat is one of the body’s first defenses against heat, this could be serious.

Diuretics and some diet pills

can also be potential problems.

These drugs make you shed water faster than normal, either by increased urination or sweating. On hot days, this makes the body more prone to dehydration.

Experts recommend people taking these medications be extra cautious during the summer by avoiding strenuous exercise in the heat of the day, drinking plenty of water and watching for the danger signs of heatrelated injuries.

Implementing recommendations by experts on medical errors may not be easy.

Despite widespread personal experience, neither the public nor physicians surveyed named medical errors as a top problem facing health care and medicine. And the physicians and the public disagree about many of the proposed solutions.

Both physicians and the public were read a common definition of a medical error early in the survey. There is much controversy and disagreement on just what is medical error.

In one study, three out of 10 doctors said, in their role as a physician, they had seen a medical error that resulted in serious harm to a patient in the previous year. Almost half said they would likely see a similar one at the same institution in the next year.

Doctors and the public agree

as many as half of the deaths due to medical errors could have been prevented. Yet only 5% of the public respondents identified medical errors as a top health care concern.

When asked to name the top problems facing health care and medicine today, physicians listed malpractice insurance costs and lawsuits, health care costs and problems with insurance companies and health plans.

The public cited the cost of health care and of prescription drugs as the top problems.

Physicians and the public differ substantially in their views on some of the key proposals to reduce medical errors, including: • Requiring hospitals to report errors to a state agency.

• Making reports of serious errors public.

• Suspending the license of health care professionals who make medical errors.

• Making surgeons who make errors with serious consequences subject to lawsuits.

Physicians said the leading

causes of errors are a shortage of nurses, overwork, stress and fatigue of health professionals.

The top four causes identified by a majority of the public were physicians not having enough time with patients; overwork, stress or fatigue of health professionals; health professionals not working together or communicating as a team; and a shortage of nurses.

One group of researchers caution most medical errors aren’t due to inherently bad doctors.

Most errors represent systemic problems, including poorly coordinated care, fragmented insurance networks, the absence or underuse of safety nets and other protocols and unwarranted variation in physician practice patterns that lack accountability.

About seven in 10 physicians thought an error would be more likely at a hospital that does fewer procedures. The public was less sure, with about half saying an error would be more likely at a low-volume center.

Smoking is addictive, quitting is contagious %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV We’ve become a nation of quitters.

According to a massive study spanning the last half century, people living in the United States have quit smoking in droves and the number of smokers continues to decrease.

Equally good news, say health care workers, is that people who opt to snuff out their last cigarette forever have inspired countless others in their social networks to do likewise.

But there still are some 30 million smokers — almost 15% of the adult population — in circulation.

Researchers have found quitting occurs in network clusters and is hardly the isolated decision it might feel like to the individual quitter.

Analyses of large social networks indicate entire pockets

of people who might not know each other all quit smoking at once.

Research on the subject stems from of an ongoing cardiovascular study dating back to the 1940s and re-creates social patterns contained within the data to see how health correlates with an individual’s social network. Family changes, such as births, marriage, death and divorce, were recorded for each participant. The research correlated with a similar study on how obesity spreads through social networks.

The same data was used to analyze smoking cessation trends within that same population.

The first and most striking finding was that people quit smoking as groups and not as individuals.

The data showed the average size of each particular cluster of smokers remains roughly the same and there were “quitting cascades” that

advanced from person to person to person.

Education also seems to matter. Individuals are more influenced by the quitting behavior of others if those people are highly educated and moreso if they are more educated themselves. Put simply, the educated are not only more influential but are also more easily influenced.

The evolution of nonsmoking is plain to researchers.

Up to the 1970s, smokers and nonsmokers alike were at the centers of social networks.

Then there was a dramatic shift of smokers to the periphery of the social network.

Smoking became a supremely bad strategy for getting popular.

Our culture emphasizes individualism so powerfully, it tends to overlook or make us forget how powerfully and silently social networks influence our health and behavior.

60’s Flashback —

Art weirdo or business savant?

As a dominant figure on the 1960s New York avant-garde art scene, Andy Warhol became a tireless self-promoter who %\ 5$1'$/ straddled a & +,// line between bizarre media stardom and the strait-laced business world.

He was born Andrew Warhola Jr., in Pittsburgh in 1928, the youngest son of Slovakian immigrants. At age 8, Warhola contracted the nervous system disease Sydenham chorea, also known as St. Vitus’ Dance. He spent months in bed recovering, during which time his artist mother taught him how to draw. When she gave him a camera, the sickly lad also developed a passionate interest in photography.

After high school, Warhola attended the Carnegie Institute for Technology, where he studied pictorial design. Four years later, with degree in hand, he moved to Manhattan to work

for Glamour magazine. There he became a successful commercial artist who now called himself Andy Warhol.

Always happy to embrace the controversial, he became a pioneer of “pop art” with his now iconic paintings of massproduced consumer goods such as cans of Campbell’s soup, Coca-Cola bottles and boxes of Brillo soap pads. His development of a photographic silkscreen printing process allowed him to repeat images and create multiple copies of a subject.

He was fascinated with celebrityhood. Thanks to his printmaking skills, he produced an endless variation of stylized images — often done in vivid, garish colors — of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley (his particular favorites), as well as such other superstars as Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy.

He always remained an art gallery favorite and was especially beloved by those who sought the unconventional. One typical Warhol exhibit featured collected scenes of car wrecks, electric chairs and race riots, all done in lurid candy hues.

His reputation and his bank account grew large. In 1964, he opened a Manhattan warehouse loft that was covered in tin foil and featured silver painted walls. The Factory, as it was called, became the premier cultural hot spot for creative counterculturists, as well as a meeting place for the trendy rich and famous.

Weekends often found Warhol and his hangers-on at such “in” local nightspots as Studio 54 and Max’s Kansas City, where those lucky enough to be allowed entrance often mingled with artists, musicians, poets and the occasional politician.

Throughout the 1960s, Warhol experimented with various forms of media, including publishing, television, music production, fashion and theater.

One favorite endeavor was the filming of underground movies. He released more than 60 works, some of which ran for 25 hours and appeared meaningless to traditional moviegoers; “Sleep,” for example, just showed a man sleeping for several hours.

His world changed in 1968 when he was shot in the stom-

$1'< :$5+2/ ach by radical feminist writer Valerie Solanas, who was irate because Warhol had rejected a story she had written. Warhol survived the attack, which damaged several organs, but the remainder of his days were

spent wrapped in a surgical corset.

When he died at age 58 in 1987 following gall bladder surgery, he left his estate to what is now the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

I booked two nights at the Ashtree House Hotel in Paisley, Scotland, through Expedia. I paid Expedia for the first night and the hotel directly for the second night.

I had to cancel my reservation. Expedia refunded the first night but the hotel will not respond to my requests for a refund. I’ve emailed several times and phoned the hotel twice.

Expedia says it can’t help me and recommends that I leave a bad review for the hotel. Can you help me get my

Leave a bad review? Seriously?

I don’t know how that’s going to get your $103 back, but I guess you’ll feel a little better about losing the money. But no, there has to be a better way.

I reviewed your itinerary and there’s no indication that your stay was nonrefundable. Rather, it says cancellations or changes made after 11:59 p.m. two days before your arrival or no-shows are subject go a property fee equal to 100% of the total amount paid for the reservation. In other words, you would still have to pay the hotel. But you canceled your hotel stay two months before your arrival, well before the two day cutoff.

To complicate matters, the hotel won’t respond to your inquiries. It simply charged your card and then kept your money, according to your records. You were correct to contact the hotel, but I think you might have applied more pressure to Expedia.

After all, the online agency made your reservation and took a com-

mission from the hotel. It bears some responsibility for this mess.

I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the Expedia customer service executives on my consumer advocacy site.

When I contacted Expedia, it initially claimed it had already refunded your hotel stay. It asked you to check your records, saying that you may have missed the refund because of the dollarsto-pound conversion rate. You checked your credit card and, as you expected, found a refund for only the first night.

Next, Expedia tried to contact

the Ashtree House Hotel. But the hotel didn’t respond to Expedia. (On second thought, maybe leaving a review isn’t such a bad idea. But only to warn others — like I said, it won’t get your money back.)

As I review your case, I have only one piece of advice. Calling the hotel to ask about a refund is minimally helpful. However, steady and persistent emailing can work. And it’s important to pressure both the hotel and your travel agent, in this case Expedia. If that doesn’t do the trick, you can always file a credit

card dispute. Your bank should be able to reverse the charge and if the hotel doesn’t respond to its requests for an explanation, the refund will stick.

But you got some good news.

Since Expedia could not get a response from the hotel, it decided to give you the remaining $103.

There are a handful of presidents students of history and civics should get to know to help understand what made America the dominant global nation it is today.

For the most part, today’s youngsters take for granted America’s position in the world. It was no accident how we got here, and understanding how our republic works is central.

While President Donald Trump was an easy target for his bombastic style, he wasn’t much different from President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who found himself in the Oval Office early in the 20th century after to the assassination of President William McKinley.

In 1900, the Republicans ran “T.R.” for vice president to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been an irritating maverick to oldguard politicians. Their plan backfired when McKinley was assassinated.

As president, “T.R.” created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms. A Repub-

lican, he believed in a strong Navy and had the pre-World War I battleships of the Great White Fleet circle the globe showing off the growing power of the United States of America. He believed in a “big stick” policy, as in “walk softly but carry a big stick.”

Roosevelt oversaw the momentous building of the Panama Canal, opening the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, cutting in half the time needed to go from ocean to ocean without traveling around South American horn.

The other Roosevelt, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, arguably has been called America’s greatest president. He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s Depression and into the last five years of World War II. Ironically, one of our best presidents succeeded him after he died a few weeks into his first term.

Vice-President Harry S. Truman became known among detractors as “His Accidency.” He was the only 20th century president to have only a high school diploma.

FDR had not confided in

Truman about the nation’s development of an atomic bomb. He was told about the highly-secret $2 billion World War II project after moving into the Oval Office. Just a few months later, Truman made the historic — and perhaps one of the century’s most important — decision to drop the two devastating bombs on Japan.

The Cold War started while he was in office and lasted for more than 40 years until President Ronald Reagan built up American armed forces to the point it caused the Soviet Union to go broke trying to keep up. History has recorded his 1987 speech in Berlin with the line, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

The accomplishments of presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy led us through the turbulent 1950s and into the ‘60s. It was “Ike” who was the architect of our interstate highway system. Kennedy launched us to the moon with our space program. Kennedy, and his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, changed America with their quest for meaningful civil rights.

izing of our nation’s leaders was the seventh, President Andrew Jackson. He led the newly established Democratic Party and became known as King Andrew I for opposing Congress and never hesitating to use his veto powers.

His major government action was signing the Indian Removal Act, which forced Native Americans on ancestral lands east of the Missis-

sippi to move to the untamed land in the West, primarily in what became Oklahoma.

For the younger generations who are bored with history or lack a basic understanding of American civics, a study of these U.S. presidents might supply the necessary ingredients to becoming knowledgeable and informed Americans.

Pro football born in Canton car dealership The last thing you’d expect to see when entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, is a shiny 1920 *5($7 Hupmobile.

(6&$3(6 A friendly 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV docent will %\ 52' .,1* happily clear up your confusion by explaining that the automobile is a pivotal part of the history of the National Football League.

In fact, the Canton Hupmobile dealership was at the center of its founding. And that’s why the Hall is located in Canton and the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game is played in the stadium next door.

Early in 1920 the owner of the dealership and the Canton Bulldogs team invited owners of other area and East Coast teams to come to Canton to talk about organizing a professional football league. There weren’t enough chairs for everyone, so some sat on the running boards of the cars in the showroom.

What they came up with was the American Professional Football Conference consisting mainly of Ohio teams.

A month later it was changed from Conference to Association and teams in Buffalo; Detroit; Rochester, N.Y.; and Hammond were added. Legendary Native American Jim Thorpe, who played for the Canton Bulldogs, was named its first president.

Only two charter members, the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) are still in existence.

At the Hall, visitors will learn that football was first professionalized in 1892.

They’ll pass through the Pro Football Time Tunnel on their way to the circular structure that focuses on the NFL’s first century, decade by decade. Here they learn that pro football was primarily a regional sport with informal circuits centered in a single state or region with only limited play outside state lines.

There’s plenty of equipment and uniforms on display that by today’s standards look to be anything but protective.

Names of teams participating in the early years and now long gone include the Providence (Rhode Island) Steamrollers, Muncie (Indiana) Flyers, Rock Island (Illinois) Independents, Akron (Ohio) Professionals, Brooklyn (New York) Lions, Orange (New Jersey) Tornadoes, St. Louis (Missouri) Gunners, Duluth (Minnesota) Eskimos and the Racine (Wisconsin) Badgers.

There’s a whole room full

of busts of famous players, coaches, owners and front office personnel who’ve received gold jackets at the annual induction ceremonies. The most interesting things, however, are the bits of trivia no one’s ever heard of. Like the fact that Buffalo Bills guard Billy Shaw,

a Hall enshrinee, never played in the NFL. His entire career was in the American Football League. How about this! The tallest pro football player was Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Sligh. He was 7 feet tall. Shortest was Jack Shapiro, a running back for the

1929 Staten Island Stapletons, who was just 5 feet, 1/2 inch tall.

There’s more to San Diego than the zoo.

The history of California and, as follows, of the western United States is rooted in a promontory overlooking the bay Spanish conquistadors first sailed into what has become the nation’s southwesternmost metropolitan complex of more than 3 million people.

Whether you drop down into San Diego on I-5 from the Los Angeles megalopolis or slide in along I-8 from the great southwest, the two freeways meet at the Presidio.

Parked around a solid earlyCalifornia tower is what is now a 40-acre Presidio Park that anchors the 21-mission chain forming the backbone of the Golden State.

The park is the home of the museum that honors Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra, who planted a cross on the hill that might have been intended to be the site of the first U.S. mission but gave way to rebellious Kumeyaay Indians who resented the Spanish iron hand.

The first permanent mission, San Diego de Alcala, was built about 5 miles up the San Diego River in 1769 to soften relations between the intruders and the natives.

The growth of Alta, Calif., grew

out of the Presidio; however, the Franciscans accompanied the Spanish soldiers and built the mission chain over the next half century until Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821.

The Mexican government secularized the missions a decade later and rich rancheros came north to claim the spoils. San Diego’s Old Town at the base of the hill crowned by the Presidio became a trade center as Mexico encouraged foreign trade. Today, it attracts both locals and tourists to its shops, restaurants and 19th century shop workers, such as blacksmiths and woodworkers.

Presidio Hill became a military fort and garrison in the mid1840s after a combined force of Commodore Robert Stockton and Gen. Stephen Kearney won control of Alta.
