Unanticipated district leadership suits David Miller very well %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU David Miller’s title as 4th District commander for the American Legion Department of Indiana isn’t something he anticipated, but many roles along the way prepared him for the role.

During about a decade with the American Legion at the district level, he served as vice commander, membership officer, adjutant, finance officer and chaplain. He also served the department of Indiana as the state national security and foreign affairs chairman.

The 4th District consists of the northeast counties of Indiana bordering the Michigan and Ohio state lines as far south as Berne and as far west as Columbia City, including 29 individual posts and more than 7,100 active American Legion members.

“The American Legion is the largest wartime veterans organization in the world,” Miller said. “When I got involved, it was not because I had any vision about leading my post or the district. I joined to become a member of the honor guard and provide military honors.

“I quickly understood what the four pillars of the American Legion are about, became involved in the junior shooting sports program and very quickly became the post commander at Post 241 in Waynedale. I realized I had an opportunity to serve again in the American Legion the same way I had served when I was in the military. And just as importantly, I felt a responsibility to ensure the American Legion would be available for my sons’ generation of warriors.”

Miller, 57, was a member of the United States Air Force, Indiana Air National Guard with the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne Indiana where he served for over 18 years. He was a security police/security forces member for the entire time and was deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm and Uzbekistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.

He owns a small hardwood flooring company in Fort Wayne that installs specialty hardwoods, vinyl planks and staircases.

Through his experiences, he has developed a philosophy about leadership.

“I believe leadership cannot be taught. Leadership has to come from within,” he said.

“Management can be taught. It is like any other skill. But true leadership, the ability to lead people into war, must come from a special place inside.

“I believe a real man rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously and expects the greater good.”

In his current role, he has continued to hone his own leadership style.

“This year as commander has taught me so much about having a servant’s heart,” Miller said. “I have driven thousands of miles through our area and given countless speeches and spoken one on one with veterans who struggle with PTSD. “It has also taught me to be a more humble listener. Both younger and more experienced veterans have shared things with me they have not shared with their families or their therapists. It is an honor to listen to these brave men and women.”

Miller said the organization is always seeking new members to help support their families and to involve them with its many important community programs,

“It’s all part of the American Legion that I love so much,” Miller said.

Honoring our American flag %\ 9,1&( /$%$5%(5$ )HDWXUH :ULWHU The American flag has been used as a symbol to represent our national pride, rebellion and everything else in between. It’s a long-standing symbol, and it means different things to different people.

For many, the American flag represents freedom, hope, individualism and perseverance. The flag is used to honor different holidays and occasions, and to remember those we have lost and honor those who serve our country. The American flag deserves our respect and honor.

There are many times when we look to the flag for remembrance and unity, and one of those times, of course, is Independence Day. Here are three men — none of them a “vexillologist” or “flag expert.” They’re just United States citizens who honor the flag year-round in their own respectful way.

Ralph Knuth Ever the patriot on his daily walks with a dog and often when driving, Ralph Knuth notices the American flag flying at many homes and businesses. It’s not unusual for this Korean War veteran at age 92 to knock on a door or leave a note pointing out their flag has seen better days.

Perhaps it’s frayed or faded.

Knuth politely asks the flag’s owner to either get a new flag or not fly the current one out of respect since it’s damaged. Usually, the owner replaces the flag and often thanks him for his concern.

And Knuth returns his thanks.

Joe Richeson Joe Richeson learned how to properly fold the flag as a Cub Scout pack leader around 1986.

“Eventually I became an instructor for a few select topics, flag etiquette among them,” he related.

“Whenever an opportunity arises, I have volunteered to show our country’s flag the respect in handling that the traditions around it have prescribed.

“On a rare occasion at my place of employment, I would see a guard struggling with the retiring of the colors around quitting time, and helping a little to properly handle the flag seems only a minor effort of patriotism,” said Richeson.

He also meticulously directs several members of the Fort Wayne Area Community Band to precisely fold the 12-by-18 American flag lowered behind the band when they perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” to end the summer concert season at Foellinger Theatre. “I am only

He plays alto saxophone and is a charter member of the band, which was formed in November 1979.

Pete Duran Pete Duran has the utmost respect for the American flag by making sure it’s disposed of in a dignified manner when it’s no longer serviceable to be flown.

For about a month, Duran repeatedly reminded fellow parishioners at St. Therese Catholic Church to bring their tattered flags to the church gathering area before Flag Day, June 14.

On that evening, Duran, honor guard commander of Anthony Wayne Assembly 239 of the Knights of Columbus, gathered with fellow members and Boy Scout Troop 2 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

In an official flag burning ceremony, they properly disposed of worn American flags collected from Catholic churches and many businesses in the Fort Wayne area. A total of 457 flags were burned during the ceremony; so many, in fact, a ceremony was held the previous week just to fold the damaged flags prior to burning.

Gardening at Old Fort same for 200 years %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Gardening hasn’t changed a lot since the completion of the third American fort in Fort Wayne in 1816. The only difference between then and now is the implements used to prepare the ground for planting.

Willow Ortiz, a member of The Old Fort staff, is in charge of planting, nurturing

and harvesting the vegetables in the two small plots just outside the entrance to the replica fort along the St. Mary’s River in downtown Fort Wayne. She also oversees the tiny herb garden inside the fort’s log walls and does the cooking during special fort activities.

According to Ortiz, the gardens were much bigger in order to provide for the 60 to 100 soldiers, their wives and

children living at the fort in 1816. “A crew of privates back then pulled a wooden plow to loosen up the soil for planting. It was tough, sweaty work, but there were plenty of privates,” she said. “That’s why I also plant mint, lavender and chamomile to give the buildings a nice odor and minimize the smells.”

“Today we use a motorized tiller to cultivate the plots after hours when the public is not around. I plant peas, cucumbers, collard greens, corn and root vegetables like squash and potatoes. I also scatter milkweed seeds in the garden, because in 1816 its roots were used as medicine for just about anything from dysentery to consumption. Tea was made from the leaves that supposedly cured coughing, asthma, chest colds — and some people thought it could ward off evil spirits.

“In late May I planted two rows of cucumber plants. The next day I found that the resident groundhog, rabbits and birds ate one row. I may have to go on guard duty to keep them away. We know what was planted then from the inventory lists kept by the fort’s quartermaster. Heritage seeds that have been genetically recreated from early plants are available, but we prefer native plants grown by area farmers, friends and family of fort members.”

Excess vegetables not used in cooking for special fort events are donated to reenactors and needy families.

“I’ll be harvesting cucumbers and squash in early August.

Nothing was thrown away back then, nor is it today,” said Ortiz. “Food scraps, vegetable husks and plant leaves go back into the ground to enrich the soil.

“When the fort is open to the public we’re in period costumes and do period demonstrations. So when I’m laboring over an open fire, I’ll explain what I’m cooking, the ingredients used and how long it will be before I

I make my own period costume, which is a full, straight Regency-style dress. It also includes a bib-front apron and a modesty scarf that doubles as a towel. People back then wore everything until it literally fell apart.”

“I really love being here,” said the Fort Wayne native

and Homestead High School graduate. History is her thing. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Purdue Fort Wayne focusing on medieval and religious studies.

The fort is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m.

The rigorous sport of competitive ballroom dancing %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU With Christine Kuznar’s work title — senior associate athletic director at Purdue Fort Wayne Athletics — it’s not surprising she has elevated a social activity for most people into a sport.

Kuznar is a competitive ballroom dancer.

“I started dancing when I was 52, and am now 56,” she said. “It has been such a great mental and physical outlet for me. It has kept me physically fit — and mentally, I hope.

Learning dance routines and patterns stretches those brain cells.”

She is serious about dancing.

In April she came in first in every event she competed in at the USA Dance Nationals for ballroom dancing. The levels she competed in remind one of the Olympics. Her division is for age 55 and older and for the smooth waltz moves like the foxtrot, she competed among others in the bronze category.

In the dances like the cha-cha,

the rumba and swing, she was in the silver segment of competition.

“It’s so much fun,” she said.

“The way I got into it was my daughter gave me a month of lessons for Mother’s Day one year. She was getting her master’s degree in Fort Wayne.”

Her daughter, who is currently working on her Ph.D. in Louisiana, had gotten hooked after joining the collegiate ballroom dance team when she was at Purdue University. And yes, it’s a family affair, because Kuznar’s husband, a former anthropology professor who does consulting, joins her. Their son, who lives in Louisville, hasn’t joined them — yet.

“My husband does do it with me. But he’s not as interested in the competitive things,” she said. “I’m in the athletic department, and I’m competitive.

I try to challenge myself and get better every time.”

For competition, the arm motion and other aspects must be precise. A few times a week she goes to The Fort Wayne Ballroom Company and is coached

there, the equivalent of going to the gym for a sport.

Although she has been in sports all her life, including being an active gymnast, learning martial arts, running half marathons, playing intramural volleyball and riding horseback, none of that is required to enjoy ballroom dancing.

“What I love about it is people from all physical abilities and ages can find a place,” she said. “There are group classes and private class packages.

There’s a program for homeschoolers. There are people from all walks of life, such as an auto repair mechanic and a physician. One person is blind.

Funding will help Arts United ensure the Taste of the Arts Festival is an inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible experience for festival participants and community members.

Moviemakers said ‘It’s just not “commercial”’ The indefatigable Bruce Brown wasn’t about to give up on his movie project.

After being rebuffed by $ %RRPHU %ODVW Hollywood 7R 7KH 3DVW distribu%\ 5$1'$/ tors, Brown & +,// chose to throw himself wholeheartedly into getting the documentary, “The Endless Summer,” out to the general public, even though it could spell financial ruin for him.

Brown was born in San Francisco in 1938 and grew up in Long Beach. After high school, he joined the Navy and was assigned to a base in Hawaii, where he filmed fellow surfers with an 8mm movie camera.

Back home in California, he became a beach lifeguard and an amateur filmmaker. Beginning in the late 1950s, he created five short 16mm surfing movies in five years, screening them later to rapt audiences at local high schools and rented halls.

In 1962, Brown came up with the story idea that would become “The Endless Summer.” His feature would focus on two young surfers traveling the globe and following the summer season while chasing down the perfect wave. It would be a fantasy come true for any surfer.

The story would star two top-notch local wave jockeys — Robert August, 18, and Mike Hynson, 20. (Both had appeared in some of Brown’s earlier works.) August had been a straight-A student body president at Huntington Beach High School; Hynson was a

August and Hynson became surfboard makers while the moviemaker set about editing approximately 9 miles of celluloid. (Armed with a 20-pound windup 16mm camera, Brown had a meager 50 feet of film available for each shoot before having to reload.)

Roadblocks loomed large for Brown when he finished his movie. In 1964, when he approached Tinseltown movie distributors, they all but laughed in Bruce’s face. While “The Endless Summer” did feature incredible surfing scenes, Brown’s friendly, wisecracking narration and a decent instrumental soundtrack by The Sandals surf band, the distributors opined that it simply wasn’t “commercial” enough to go nationwide. But, in his heart, its creator knew his feature would appeal to surfers and non-surfers alike.

Brown took matters into his own hands, aware that this option involved a huge financial gamble. He and a partner borrowed $50,000 (about $300,000 in today’s money) to enlarge the film to 35mm. He rented a theater in landlocked Wichita, Kan., in the dead of winter.

“The Endless Summer” sold out each of its showings for two straight weeks.

Movie world bean counters, however, continued to shrug their shoulders.

Brown then persuaded a Manhattan theater to give “The Endless Summer” a one-week tryout. It ran for a year, with about 20% of attendees being repeat ticket buyers. The movie was picked up for national (and, later, worldwide) distribution, eventually earning $20 million.

“The Endless Summer” became a cultural turning point and the most influential documentary ever about surfing.

Side salads increase vegetable intake

In my house we have several go-to side salads that increase

our eating of raw vegetables, and I am always scoping out recipes to add to the variety.

I came across a recipe for a Southern broccoli salad in our local paper and decided that with a few modifications I could make a vegan version — and am I ever glad I did. It was delicious, and I have made it twice in eight days. In addition, I am serving it to about 60 people this weekend, and even though the recipe calls for crisp bacon and diced cheddar cheese, I have decided to serve

it totally vegan because it is simply awesome without the added ingredients. (Said no bacon lover — ever).

In the quest to eat one pound of cooked veggies and one pound of raw veggies each day, this salad is a total winner.

Eating raw vegetables may improve your access to many vitamins, such as water-soluble vitamin C and many of the B vitamins. Heating can kill many enzymes within these plants that may be beneficial for digestion as well, so in the

Southern Broccoli Salad – revised: 3 stalks of raw broccoli (typically it is sold bundled in 3 stalks) ½ cup Craisins (dried cranberries) ½ cup quartered cherry or thumb tomatoes ½ cup rough chopped roasted pecans (I have used raw pecans, now I throw them in a nonstick pan and toast them up and that adds a lovely roast nut flavor that enhances the salad). Seeds could also be added. ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise (I used Follow Your Heart Vegenaise) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar (I used cane sugar) Pinch of kosher salt Pinch of pepper Omitted from original recipe: 6 pieces crispy bacon and 4 ounces of diced/cubed cheddar cheese.

Directions: Other than toasting the pecans and the dressing, this is an everybodyin-the-pool recipe.

You will only be using the floret portion of the broccoli cut into bite-sized pieces. Then add quartered tomatoes, cranberries, pecans and pinch of salt and pepper.

For the dressing, mix vegan mayo, apple cider vinegar and sugar. The vegan mayo is a little thinner than traditional mayo and for this salad, that works perfectly to help bring out the flavor of all the other ingredients. Add to salad and mix. You could try plain yogurt if you would rather.

You could eat this right away, but letting it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours helps the vinegar disperse and the flavors meld together.

Enjoy the local summer produce and experiment with fresh raw side dishes. Stay well.

‘School’s out for summer...’

As a boy, $ %RRPHU %ODVW Vincent 7R 7KH 3DVW Furnier %\ 5$1'$/ loved to & +,// watch old movies on one of Phoenix’s independent TV stations. The Bowery Boys comedy flicks were a special favorite. In one particular story, when one of the characters does something (typically) stupid, a buddy taunts him with, “Hey, school’s out!”

Furnier liked the way that phrase sounded when he rolled it around in his mind. Little did he know that years later it would fuel his first million-selling single as Alice Cooper when

he co-wrote “School’s Out” with fellow musician Michael Bruce.

Picture a pre-fame Alice Cooper as a teenager. You might cast him as a nerd and the laughing stock of Phoenix’s Cortez High School. But in reality, Furnier was quite the big man on campus there. He set school records as a varsity cross-country runner. He wrote a popular column (“Get Outta My Hair!”) for the school newspaper.

He and some fellow trackand-field jocks formed a rock band called the Spiders. And when they cut a Furnier-led single — a punkish ditty called “Don’t Blow Your Mind” — on a tiny local label, it rocketed to No. 1 on Phoenix radio in 1966, Furnier’s senior year. “We owned that school.

We owned everything about it,” he has boasted. “I had a great time in high school. I was Ferris Bueller!”

“School’s Out” became the seventh single release by Alice Cooper, at the time the name

of both the lead singer and his backup band. It was the only 45 issued from Cooper’s fifth album, not surprisingly called “School’s Out.” The obstreperous disc opens with a screechy, fingernailson-the-blackboard lead guitar line. Then comes a loping bass guitar and a thumping drum that combine to drive the high-octane offering for threeand-a-half chaotic minutes.

Predictably, record-buying teens loved it. And why not?

Who didn’t look forward to summer vacation, three sublime months shrilly announced by the rapid-fire clanging of a bell that promised endless possibilities of a school-free, sunshine-bathed season? Here in America, Cooper’s bratty, tongue-in-cheek single reached Billboard’s Top 10 and became a No. 1 winner in England.

Some of the song’s lyrics are, well, “different”: “School’s out for summer, school’s out forever, school’s

But don’t :2/)6,( you fall for it. It’s not a dollar store anymore, it’s the Dollar and a Quarter Store, regardless of the store name. One chain considered the name 2 BELOW. That would give them the option of two more price increases without having to buy another new sign.

I am addicted to all dollar stores. But now with this price increase, maybe it’s time to break my habit. Years ago, when pay phones went from 10 cents to a quarter, that was the last phone booth I ever walked into, except to check the little coin return to see if anyone had left any change in it.

Let me pause here while younger readers google what a phone booth is. By the way, for older folks, just so you know, the five-and-dime store has also raised their prices.

Several weeks ago, I was in a dollar store in my neighborhood, unaware this seismic shift in my budget was about to occur. I waited for the cashier to ring up my purchases, though I thought I knew exactly what the total

would be. I kept track of how many purchases I was about to make, and I even know to how multiply 1 x 16.

“Wait, how could the total be $20? I only bought 16 items!”

“Everything is $1.25 now, sir.”

“Even a can of okra?”

“Sir, if you really like okra, why not just spring for the extra 25 cents?”

“Because I hate okra. Everyone hates okra. I was buying it because it was a dollar. How about those helium balloons?

How much are those?”

“Everything is $1.25, sir.”

“Okay, I understand the increase with food, but why did balloons go up?”

“Because we put helium in them.”

Frustrated, I wandered

Probably the most deft line, though, is: “We’ve got no class, and we’ve got no principles” Predictably, many adults railed against the irreverent record, and some radio stations refused to play it. Cooper’s song has now joined the ranks of such other anti-school classics as Chuck Berry’s “School Day” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”

Cooper’s action packed concerts — as much modern vaudeville as “shock rock” — are a mash-up of comedy, horror and music, and Cooper often ends his shows with “School’s Out.” In an Esquire magazine interview, Cooper said, “When we did ‘School’s Out,’ I knew we had just done the national anthem, (that) I’ve become the Francis Scott Key of the last day of school!”

I wondered if I should start a support group for people like me who are getting sucked into an increasingly more costly addiction.

My support group would have six steps to recovery: 1. Admit you are powerless to pass up a dollar bag of ginger snaps.

2. Resist the notion that lower

prices are a higher power.

3. Never question the price of goodness.

4. Share your story with others so they can be savers as well.

5. Pray the $1.25 stores never go to $1.50.

6. Before buying on impulse, look deeply inside your shelf to be sure of what you really need.

As I was finishing this column, I saw a rumor online that the dollar store may revert to the old dollar price for some select items that are less popular.

My goal now is to find a really good okra cookbook.

Rosie Doctor keeps St. Rose Parish colorful %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Digging in the dirt, planting, nurturing and caring for the flowers at St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church in Monroeville is Rosie Doctor’s passion. “I put red geraniums in the 10 large pots around the outside of the church because they add color; they bloom all summer and match nicely with the red brick of the church.”

Doctor, an avid gardener, has been in charge of making things colorful nearly 10 years. It started when she took it upon herself to pull weeds around the property.

“Father Mike Lobo,” she said, “loves bright colors and red roses are his favorite, so I’ve been studying up on their care and feeding. They have to be cut back every spring, fertilized and sprayed for aphids.

They take a lot more work than geraniums. He basically lets me do my thing. In the fall I fill the pots with pumpkins and gourds.”

Her other passion is rummage sales. The church hosts two a year to raise money for the St. Rose Elementary

School. One was held the first weekend of April and there will be another the first weekend in September.

Doctor heads a group of about 20 women who haul, sort, fold and display items for sale in the church hall. When customers arrive, they become salespersons who bag their purchases, engage in conversation and, when the two-day events are done, they do the teardown, too. Unsold items go to St. Henry’s Thrift Store in Fort Wayne.

“The church hadn’t held a rummage sale for years and when we were searching for ways to raise money for the school a few years ago we decided to give the rummage sale another go. We get tons of stuff from the community dropped off at our garage and stored until the next one.

“It has been a good fundraiser. We end up giving the school between $1,000 and $2,000 twice a year. It’s a lot of work, but we’ve got a dedicated crew who knows what they’re doing and makes a big job seem easy.

The only problem is that our workers are getting older and need more breaks. We’ve found that the rummage sale offers

widows a great time for sharing and healing.”

According to Doctor, the women of the church also take up a food collection once a month that is delivered to St. Mark’s Lutheran food bank in town. And, four to six times a year they hold a coffee/donut social hour between the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses. Parishioners can expect special social gatherings on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, in the fall and the Sunday before Lent, which they’ve dubbed “Fat Sunday.”

The Monroeville native grew up just a block from the church and has been a member since a she was kid. Now, she and her husband of 48 years, Duane, live outside of town only five minutes from the church.

Doctor attended Monroeville High School her freshman year and then was in the inaugural class at Heritage High School. “It was still under construction. There was no elementary school, no junior high, no cafeteria and no gym.”

Doctor figures she got her passion for helping others from being a nurse for 40 years at Lutheran Hospital.

“I’m just doing my part.”

It was in July 1943 when a “24-year-old flight chief … stopped over at Baer Field just long enough to receive notice that he had been awarded the coveted Purple Heart.”

This 24-year-old was Staff Sgt. G.T. Davis who was assigned to Sheppard Field, Texas. Davis was lucky to be alive the day after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941.

Davis was assigned to

Nichols Field in Manila Dec. 8, 1941, along with America’s fighter squadrons. It was on this Philippine island when the Japanese made their attack the day after Pearl Harbor. During this time, “He was submitted to three terrifying days of bombing before he was finally wounded by a bomb fragment.”

Even after Davis was taken to a Manila hospital, the Japanese continued bombing the city. Luckily, he was shipped out to a hospital in Australia “the day before Manila fell.”

Davis’ journey was still not over on the road to recovery

and back home. While still in the hospital, he was sent back to the United States and to a hospital at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Having regained sufficient health, he left the Fort Dix hospital and was assigned to light duty at Ellington Field in Texas before going back to Sheppard Field.

Now, we would never have learned this story if Staff Sgt. Davis had not made a brief stop at Baer Field and told his harrowing experiences to the Beacon newspaper staff.

Davis eventually made it back to Sheppard Field where he was assigned to “recruiting duties.”

Plans underway for Huntertown Heritage Days Huntertown Heritage Days Festival is looking forward to its event on Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 11-14. The event changes and evolves every year as the community changes.

The unique marriage of health insurance and IRS-approved tax savings was now available for any health insurance consumer, not just the self-employed who were previously able to purchase MSAs. The concept took a few years for many to grab hold of, but now in 2022, nearly 75% of many agents’ book-of-business is comprised of HSA qualified plans.

Our senior population, however, was given the short straw when the IRS regulations were written. You see, enrollment in Medicare closes the window of opportunity for an individual to continue feeding their HSA account.

This means that even if you continue to work beyond your entitlement date, enrollment in Part A alone prohibits continued funding of tax favored

dollars into your HSA savings account. Is there a solution for someone who enjoys the tax advantages this sort of arrangement provides? Quite possibly.

Medicare Medical Savings Accounts options are similar to HSA qualified plans in that they contain a high deductible and no copays (first-dollar benefits). They also include a “savings account” from which qualified medical expenses can be paid.

Although these plans are classified as a Medicare Advantage option, they have no network restrictions and must cover all the same services that fall under Part A and Part B. Funding that goes into the MSA account comes from the Medicare MSA Plan, and they often have $0 additional premium.

‘Follow the Pipes’ offered at several venues “Follow the Pipes,” presented by the Fort Wayne History Center and the Fort Wayne Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, will be presented in Fort Wayne, July 12-14.

This event is a self-guided tour with participants providing their own transportation.

They can visit locations each day to hear the unique sounds of a church’s instrument. Concerts and or demonstrations

are scheduled at the top of each hour during the course of the daily events, with 15 minutes travel time between locations, depending on the organist’s choice of music. All the organs are pipe organs.

At Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, organist Michael Hollman will be showing and explaining about some of the many different types of organ pipes,

as well as playing the organ.

People attending should consult a map for directions and perhaps the city’s website for road closures.

Upon arriving at the church, attendees should enter through the door closest to the parking area or follow the signs designating the door to enter.

Science Central to hold Disability Days session Objects beyond our solar system will be the topic of Science Central’s next Disability Days session, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Disability Days is Science Central’s program for individuals with intellectual and devel-

opmental disabilities. Sessions are free to attend for those individuals and their caretakers.

Disability Days feature demonstrations and hands-on tabletop activities. At the upcoming session, attendees will discover “recipes” for various celestial

objects and learn about living and working in space.

Attendees will also view the first images produced by the James Webb Space Telescope, getting a look outside our solar system. Additionally, attendees will have the chance

to look through Science Central’s telescopes.

This program also gives attendees the opportunity to explore Science Central with the following modifications: • Lower ambient sound levels.

• Increased light in areas that are usually dark.

• Access to listening devices.

• Extra staff on hand.

• Additional demonstrations with extra tactile stimulation.

• Access to a private changing table.

• Access to a sensory room.

• Face shields (limited quantities).

Sandcastles shade sea turtles on South Padre Island 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV In all my travels, I’ve sent photos of turtles from around the world to my now-18-year-old granddaughter, Mollie, who has loved these creatures since she was little.

But between the Turtle Rescue Center, the turtle conservation efforts and the expansive turtle art displayed throughout South Padre Island, a strip of land also known as SPI just off the coast of Texas, my camera phone ran out of batteries before I could capture them all.

Although the Sea Turtle Art Trail is what captures the imagination, I started my journey at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center.

Injured turtles from the Laguna Madre Bay are taken to the hospital for rehabilitation before being released back into the wild.

The center offers tours and an extensive education program of its conservation program that includes patrols of the beaches during the March-to-August nesting season to help the females lay the eggs and the hatchlings find their way to safety.

Next came turtle art, an array of fiberglass formed into these vibrant creatures of the sea.

Tank is the largest turtle on the trail, covering the whole front of a store building. Other sculptures spread throughout the island reflect their artists’ proclivities.

Every turtle tells a different story in its own way and, along

with its companion Sandcastle Art Trail, provides delightful diversion to the usual beach shops and beach bars along the main road of this beach town.

On the beach, we got a shovel and bucket in hand for a lesson in what little kids have been doing forever. My instructor was a world-famous sandcastle sculptor responsible for many of the more than two dozen eye-catching creations gracing the same area as the sea turtles in what is called the Sandcastle Capital of the World.

Lucinda Wierenga explained, “You always start with a firm base and then build smaller bases on top of that.” This called for very sophisticated implements: a shovel, buckets, planters with the bottom removed, pastry knife, plastic spoon, a straw and a toothpick.

What emerged an hour later were a couple of very realisticlooking lighthouse towers with stairs, windows, doors, bricklooking décor, ramps and a bridge connecting them protected by ramparts.

All the sculptors use sand from the Rio Grande River because it’s illegal to remove any from the SPI beach areas. What keeps these productions from crumbling is water, compacting, a variety of sophisticated techniques, and added ingredients — some really strong glue.

Among my favorite sculptures that join the turtles to decorate restaurants, hotels and other attractions along Padre Boulevard,

was the Tiki, a four-sided pyramid highlighting SPI’s signature animals: turtle, pelican, dolphin and alligator. A lounge-singing mermaid seemed a fitting choice for the Coral Reef Restaurant whose sculptor needed special dispensation to show her bare nipple.

Nothing prepared me for Sandcastle Village. Initially a

vision of Lucinda’s, it was a huge tent-like structure housing a fairyland of colossal creations celebrating holidays, animals, famous characters, castles — total immersion into a dream-like sequence of other-worldly shapes of giant proportion. There’s a huge Neptune and Santa, enormous butterfly and bear as well as alligator and iguana, and a castle

large enough that a visitor can sit on its throne.

And all around are smaller heart-shaped carvings of personal salutations to loved ones and shout-outs to newborns that can be acquired for a $20 donation. An artist often is on hand to update a “tired” sculpture or create a new one.

The 157-acre preserve, located in Putnam County southwest of Greencastle, is one of Indiana’s best kept natural sites. That’s probably because there’s no big sign, no arrows and no flashing lights to let one know to slow down for the entrance. It’s basically a narrow break in the trees and underbrush with a short gravel drive.

In addition, there’s no spacious visitor’s center staffed by knowledgeable state naturalists with hands-on displays, photos and maps. There are no restrooms and the tiny grass and gravel parking area off County Road 375 South is easy to miss.

There is, however, a sign at the trailhead that welcomes visitors and clearly states that the preserve is open from dusk to dawn every day and that no bikes and motorized vehicles are allowed. Neither is rock climbing or rappelling. It’s primarily for hiking, bird watching and

The preserve is bordered by Snake Creek, which feeds into Big Walnut Creek. It was designated a State Nature Preserve in 1988 and is a registered National Natural Landmark. It’s unique because of its steep sandstone cliffs and its lush fern-filled ravines, hence the name Fern Cliff. In addition, the preserve contains a mesic upland hardwood forest full of huge oak, beech, ash, hickory, sugar maple, wild cherry and tulip trees that provide a thick overhead canopy.

Mesic refers to a type of habitat with a moderate to well-balanced supply of moisture. It’s a term used to describe the amount of water in a habitat.

The understory of the forest contains dogwood, hydrangea, paw paw and green brier, along with a large array of herbaceous plants and a profusion of ferns and bryophytes, which are the little flowerless mosses and liverworts that cover the ground. The place is truly a botanist’s floral paradise.

Early in the 20th century a commercial mining company extracted sandstone from the cliffs, crushed it onsite and delivered it to a bottle manufacturing plant in Terra Haute. The material from this quarry was the source for the first greenish glass that made the Coca Cola bottles so recognizable. What’s left of the abandoned crushing mill still remains in the sandstone canyon.

‘Whose Live Anyway?’ improv at Embassy Theatre this fall Tickets are on sale now for “Whose Live Anyway?” featuring current cast members of the Emmy-nominated TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?”

The 90-minute show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9.

“Whose Live Anyway?” consists of hilarious improvised comedy and song, all based on crowd interaction and delivered by cast members Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis, Ryan Stiles and Joel Murray. Audience participation is key to the show.

Patrons are encouraged to bring suggestions and may join the cast onstage.

This particular style of improvisational comedy is rife with countless gags, one-liners, hilarious games and even songs so clever patrons will hardly believe they were made up on the spot. The teamwork and trust that it takes to perform a show with no script is apparent and effortless as the cast spontaneously builds entire scenes, characters and storylines.

United Way of Allen County reprises rappelling fundraiser Fundraising can sometimes be a tall task, but on Friday and Saturday, July 22-23, United Way of Allen County is taking fundraising to new heights with Over The Edge, an innovative fundraising event.

The event will see 96 thrillseeking participants rappel nine stories down the Heller Homes building, 347 W. Berry St. in downtown Fort Wayne.

Each participant must raise a minimum of $1,000 in donations for United Way of Allen County’s Strong Neighborhoods to be eligible to rappel.

Family, friends and spectators are invited to come down and support participants and enjoy food trucks, music and a great atmosphere, all for an amazing cause.

Groups join to advance a better measure for the cost of aging The National Council on Aging, in collaboration with Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is launching the Equity In Aging Collaborative, a coalition of 25 national and local organizations that will advocate for a better way to measure the true cost of living as Americans age.

“Inflation is decimating the little financial security older adults might have coming out of the pandemic,” said Ramsey Alwin, NCOA President and CEO. He further stated,“But even before that, the federal poverty level failed to reflect older adults’ real needs to age with dignity. The Equity in Aging Collaborative will work to ensure that the programs millions of people rely on actually keep pace with the costs of

aging in America.”

The collaborative will build on 15 years of experience with the Elder Economic Security Standard Index, or Elder Index.

Developed by the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Elder Index is a measure of the income older adults need to meet their basic needs and age in place with dignity, factoring in household size, geography, housing, health care, transportation, food and other daily essentials.

The collaborative will advocate for the adoption of the Elder Index and for improving the standard of living measures used to determine eligibility for programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, taxes, food assistance and housing support.

“All too often, discussions of economic security lay blame on individuals and their inability to ‘save for retirement.’

Most of us, however, work hard throughout our lives,” said Mary O’Donnell, President of RRF Foundation for Aging. She further stated, “Despite this, financial struggles in later life are distressingly common. These result from larger economic forces beyond our control, systemic inequities, and an insufficient safety net. RRF Foundation for Aging is pleased to support this initiative, which will highlight the need to rethink economic security in later life.”

By careful planning and perspective, the process can be easier.

It is important to keep your eyes on the end goal. Try to envision how great it will feel to be unburdened by excess, and achieve your goal of living happily with less. Less can be the best.

This is a process of putting things in order now, so the burden does not fall on your family later.

Here are five tips to make downsizing easier.

1. Measure and then calculate. Having a detailed floor plan

of where you will be moving to and being able to rearrange your furniture in your new quarters will save a lot of time and work.

With some simple graph paper where each square represents 12 inches, you can quickly lay out your own floor plan and even cut out shapes using the graph paper to represent pieces of furniture like a sofa, chair or desk.

2. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Make lists of things you don’t love or need, so you can start making plans to get rid of those items. There are also resources that will pick up used items; we have these listed on our Ness Bros. website.

3. Easy things first. Look at the least sentimental items first.

Start in the laundry room or pantry. Look at your current clothes; if you have not worn an item for a year, it is time to donate it.

4. Ask for help. One benefit is that others can help you stay focused.

5. Move quickly. When moving into your new quarters, try to put things where they go as soon as possible, as this helps eliminate clutter. The quicker you finish, the better.
