Giving back to those who served in the military %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU When it comes to raising money to help veterans, there’s nothing supporters won’t do to make sure the coffers are full, especially when they can have a little fun in the process. That was the case last month when the annual Get Wet for a Vet took place.

The coronavirus shutdowns and state edicts on events postponed the event from the traditional first Saturday in August.

For those volunteers in the dunk tank that was not good news. Thankfully for them, the dunk tank, the iconic activity which gave the event its name, was cancelled.

“I tried but could not find a way to heat the water,” said Get Wet for a Vet board president and veteran, Jim Metherd.

Get Wet for a Vet has been in operation ever since its inception in 2013.

The annual event starts with a motorcycle run. This 50-mile ride traverses St. Joseph County, from the 9HWHUDQV RI )RUHLJQ :DUV Post No. 360 – the location of the event – to North Liberty and back to the VFW, escorted by Mishawaka, South Bend and St. Joseph County police.

Metherd estimated that 280 bikes took part this year.

It takes about 30 to 40 volunteers to run a successful fundraiser. These volunteers sell raffle tickets, serve food and beverages and help in other ways. Making matches to change children’s lives %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Sometimes it’s not the pay that makes a job the right one; it’s the rewards received for doing it well.

For Debra Walker, it’s the successful pairing of adult volunteer with a child that gives her the most satisfaction.

“I love seeing the little child who is looking forward to getting a volunteer,” Walker said. “They are so excited to be getting that additional support, someone who can focus on them and give them the one-on-one attention they crave.”

Walker, a native and lifelong resident of South Bend, is the outreach coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters-Southern Lake Michigan Region. Her job is to recruit volunteers to serve as mentors to boys and girls who are considered at-risk. She is also a case manager for several children.

“Mentors are an additional support for a child,” Walker explained.

Her role with Big Brothers Big Sisters began about 35 years ago when she applied for a posted position. Walker has a degree in social work from Ball State University. She started out doing case management and continues to do that today, in addition to her duties as outreach coordinator.

She calls on students at the University of Notre Dame to become mentors, as well as spreading the word about the organization to local civic groups.

There are no age restrictions on becoming a “big,” the term the organization uses to refer to adult mentors. It’s open to all ages, from high school age for the in-school program to senior citizens.

“Our kids really don’t care if you are young or old,” Walker said. “They just want someone who is going to be there for them.

You just have to have the heart to want to work with a child.”

Bigs commit to spending an average of between two to four hours per month with their “littles.” The Big Brother or Big Sister coordinates the activity, whether that is baking cookies, attending an event or simply taking a walk in a park. Some programs pair mentors with children at area schools and some meet after school hours or on weekends, as their schedule permits.

One of the challenges Walker faces is recruiting enough volunteers, especially men to serve as Big Brothers. Women tend to volunteer more than men, she said, and the organization always has boys who are looking for someone to bond with and build a relationship with.

Another program for which Walker seeks volunteers is Bigs With Badges. For this program, she reaches out to area police

“This program gives these agencies the opportunity to build bridges and build relationships,” Walker explained.

In addition to her education and her life experience, Walker also credits some personal strengths as the cornerstone to her abilities to make the right matches.

“I generally like people and giving and serving,” Walker said. “It’s important to me to make as many matches as possible.”

Prior to the event, the group has raised about $225,000. With COVID-19 playing havoc on people’s willingness to attend events, organizers were not sure what to expect in the days leading up to Oct. 11. Average attendance has been about 800 to 900 people. This year, attendance was almost 500.

“We anticipated a reduced number of guests and feel very fortunate that we were even able to hold the event with the current situation we are encountering,” Metherd said.

Past funds raised were given to several agencies, organizations and people. It began as a fundraiser for the Robert Miller Center for Homeless Veterans, said treasurer Dennis Kovatch.

The Miller Center is still a beneficiary of the funds, but so too are other veteran groups, such as the Blue Star Mothers of Michiana, the Marine Riders and Vets Helping Vets. The group also helped purchase a DAV van used to transport veterans to medical appointments.

Get Wet for a Vet proceeds also paid for 42 Vietnam veterans to take a five-day trip to Washington, D.C. “It gives them that brotherhood to spend that time with other veterans,” Metherd explained.

No one can understand what veterans experience, except for other veterans. Being able to share memories with others who were there is important.

There are even bigger projects ahead, thanks to the money raised this year. Metherd said the group planned to announce a project to build Indiana’s first, tiny house village for veterans on land adjacent to the VFW on Jefferson Avenue.

“I would love to break ground on this in the spring,” Metherd said.

With the event in the books, Metherd said his team will begin planning for next year when the event returns to its traditional date — Aug. 7, 2021.

South Bend native keeps busy helping local organizations %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU If Margaret “Peggy” Andert is as busy as she is in retirement, it must have been hard to keep up with her when she was working and raising a family in South Bend. At 82, Andert stays busy volunteering at four organizations.

“Life is good,” she said. “I don’t see how anyone can be bored when they retire. There is just so many places

to volunteer.”

She found one of her volunteer opportunities at The History Museum. She works in the museum’s archives, going through papers, photographs and other artifacts from the city’s past.

“I started 17 years ago, when the museum had the Lincoln exhibit,” Andert recalled. “I started as a greeter and then I just stayed.”

Andert, whose maiden name is Graham, enjoyed living on the farm land her maternal grandparents owned on Ironwood Drive, which was a dirt road back then. She was the only daughter with two older brothers. Today, she lives a couple doors down from where she was born on Ironwood Road. It has been her home for 55 years.

It was during some of her work at The History Museum archives that she came across a photo of one of her brothers.

It was one of several photos in a collection, taken when her brother was in elementary school.

“You never know what you are going to find,” she said.

Andert married her husband, Michael, in 1965. He passed away about seven years ago. The couple had a small wedding at Christ the King Church and raised two sons, both of whom still live in

the area.

She has two stepgranddaughters and, at 81, her first granddaughter was born. Andert watches her on Mondays.

“That’s just fun,” she said.

In 2000, she retired from working in the school kitchens for South Bend Schools for 21 years. It was a job she took while her sons were growing up. Work hours meshed well with her children’s school breaks, Andert said.

For the last six or seven years, Andert has also lent her sewing talents to the James Cassidy Costume Company, a program housed within the South Bend Community Schools Corporation.

“There was a little blurb in the paper that they were looking for people who liked to sew because they needed costumes for several school plays,” she said. “And I like to sew.”

When she retired from the

school district, Andert began to volunteer at the hospital, serving as a patient representative. That volunteer position has been furloughed due to the coronavirus.

Also affected by the pandemic is Andert’s work as a docent at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the University of Notre Dame campus.

She hasn’t been on duty there since January.

“It’s just gorgeous and there is so much history in there,” she said.

Her advice for other seniors is to find something they are passionate about, something they are interested in and volunteer.

“I think it is important to get out and keep in contact with people,” Andert said.

“The more you can get out the better; the more you can see people, the more you can keep your mind active, the longer you can stay healthy.”

Davies often took credit for the entire song: “I wrote ‘Lola’ to be a great record, not a great song. Something that people could recognize in the first five seconds.” Actually, his brother Dave — and fellow Kink — wrote the music, with Davies adding the wry lyrics afterwards. During the recording sessions, four or five versions were attempted, with different keys being tried as well as various overall styles.

In 1985, “Weird Al” Yankovic created a “Lola” parody that he dubbed “Yoda,” which featured lyrics about the iconic Star Wars character.

While “Lola” became one of the Kinks’ most appreciated concert pieces, it would be another 13 years before the band would enjoy its final Top 10 hit single, “Come Dancing.”

Rehabilitation specialists, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, find themselves tackling an ever-changing, long-term care environment. We are working in an industry where rehab patients are receiving less therapy, with the urge to return these same individuals to their previous level of function. The shift in acuity of care has already been occurring. Even before prescription drug monitoring programs, there has always existed the necessity to move on to the next continuum of care.

Patients with co-morbidities that continue to require the need for nursing and/or therapy care are usually set up with home health or outpatient services. For many, these services aren’t always enough. Challenges with staffing clinician changes what is allowed for home health agencies. The assisted living environment offers the perfect balance to meet the health needs of our older adults after or in lieu of a skilled nursing stay.

Assisted living facilities of today are geared toward offering a variety of services and treating different levels of care. At a portion of the cost of a tradi-

tional SNF stay, a stint at an assisted living community may be beneficial for older adults. Most in-house services that are available at a skilled nursing facility level, such as physician services, podiatry, dentistry and optometry can be performed through routine visits by such providers.

Other assisted living facilities have seen the benefits of skilled rehabilitation services. More and more assisted living communities are partnering with contract therapy companies to provide on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy services.

Someone else in the family or your attorney should also know where they are because you could be hospitalized and someone would have to launch your claim for you.

Make sure to follow all instructions to the letter.

Unanswered questions or an overlooked step will delay the process and require redundant correspondence with the insurance company.

Keep every police and medical report and all other bits of information connected to the incident that prompted the claim. And every receipt. If you’re in doubt about whether a document is relevant, keep it and let the company toss it out.

If our claim involves lost or damaged property, it helps to have a prepared inventory (photographs are best) of all your property, along with a list of what’s missing or destroyed.

Keep a file of all correspondence and conversations with the insurers.

And don’t take no for an answer. Their job is to avoid paying out for nonqualifying and fraudulent claims. Your job is to prove to them that your claim qualifies.

Be persistent. If you hit a wall in your initial stages, ask to speak to your contact’s supervisor and present your case.

If this doesn’t work, discuss the matter with your attorney.

When you file claims for long-term care reimbursement, make copies of your receipts before sending the originals to the insurance company. When matters become confusing or don’t meet your expectations, call and ask for clarification and how to solve any problems.

Swapping a sedentary lifestyle for a fitness focus %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Staying active in retirement is not always easy, as 67-year-old Mishawaka resident Karen Baldini can attest. She and her husband, Craig, spent the first years of retirement not doing very much, other than traveling.

“We had been retired for a couple of years and had gotten sedentary,” Baldini said.

That is when she joined the YMCA, about four years ago. She attends classes at the O’Brien Center three days per week. She said it has helped her with her physical and mental health in this transition from fulltime middle school language arts teacher to retiree.

“It’s really easy to sit on your keister all the time when you are no longer working,” she said. “I feel more toned. I am able to do more. You feel more confident in what you can do. The more I go to class, the more energy I have.”

Baldini attends the senior aerobics class, a senior fitness class and the Silver Sneakers class. All of these are designed to help older participants with some of the

common issues of aging, such as balance, strength and flexibility.

Some of the routines, especially the dance-centered workouts, may look daunting. But Baldini said the key is to keep moving.

“Nobody does it perfectly,” she said. “We are all helping each other along. I don’t have all of the routines down in one of my classes, but I just keep moving whether I am moving the same way as anyone else or not.”

But it isn’t just the exercise that keeps Baldini faithfully attending classes at the YMCA. It’s also the camaraderie that develops between the class participants.

Although COVID has impacted the number of people who are willing to come out to workout, class members will check on each other.

This concern also means that participants encourage each other.

“This is a relationship that you build with people,” she said. “There’s accountability, too.”

Missing a class or two or longer may result in that person having to explain where they have been for that time.

Having a routine in which exercise becomes part of the weekly schedule is helpful.

When the Baldinis travel, she finds way to continue her routine, sometimes by attending class at a YMCA or simply to use facilities available at the hotel. Whether it’s working out on the machines or swimming in the pool, Baldini finds it important to keep her momentum going.

For those seniors who may be starting out on a path to better fitness, Baldini suggests that shoes should be an important first step. The shoes need to be comfortable and support the foot in whatever activity the senior chooses to participate in.

She also suggests that seniors look at options. For example, yoga and tai chi are both good for improving balance. Another class, which is one of Baldini’s favorites, is the Silver Sneakers classes, offered at many locations.

“The instructors teach you how to modify the movements and show you another way to use that muscle,” Baldini explained.

When women her age and older graduated from high school and college, there

That has certainly changed with the YMCA, for example, offering exercise classes, fitness machines and even

competitive activities, like pickleball.

“My adult children are very active,” she said. “I wish I had stayed the same way, but unfortunately I didn’t.

So, now I am helping myself out.”

Many would-be travelers found out that the trip cancel-

lation coverage they thought they had, they didn’t.

Everyone learned that a worldwide pandemic changed all the coverage rules.

Most of these ticket holders have been given vouchers, which precludes them from making insurance claims to recoup their loss.

The real lesson here: ask questions galore when you buy the coverage.

Make sure you define any and all coverage you want, from lost luggage to emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurers do not provide coverage for mishaps suffered during activities

such as skiing or scuba diving.

You also have to determine if your policy covers you for any misadventure or cancellations caused by any act of terrorism.

Before putting together a travel insurance plan, check with your health and medical

The hole truth I’m a born and bred (mostly Jewish rye) New Yorker, but I’ve lived for 40 years in Indianapolis.

I’ve eaten biscuits and ,1 $ 1876+(// gravy for %\ ',&. breakfast, :2/)6,( lunch and dinner (not all on the same day). I’ve had a pork tenderloin that is four times bigger than the bun and I even wear shorts when it’s below freezing outside. So I do consider myself a Hoosier, but then the other day I was really

tested when my wife confronted me with this: “Dick, the neighborhood is having a big get-together, a chance to meet new people.

Masks and social distancing will be required.”

“OK, I’m in.”

“It’s a cornhole contest.”

“OK, I’m out.”

I did a search for cornhole on YouTube. The first video was a guy who, from the traditional distance to the board, had made 300 shots in a row. Then he stepped back to 60 feet and made another 50 in a row, several from behind his back. He said the key to holding the bag was to get a grip, probably the same expression his wife uses when he spends all day and night throwing bean bags.

I also watched some championship matches. I felt sorry for the announcers who didn’t have a lot of things to analyze.

There were a lot of “oohs” and “aahs.” And two “wows.” They said “it’s a game of inches” about a dozen times.

Bottom line, I went and I played. I wasn’t very good at cornhole, but I got to meet a lot of new people: Jill, Kay, Ellen, Steve, another Steve. Cynthia and Bob. Everyone had on a mask, many wore sunglasses and a cap, so I don’t have a clue how I’ll recognize them next time Mary Ellen and I walk around the neighborhood. Everyone had a name tag on that night, but it would be awkward to ask people to wear their ID whenever they walk out their

front door for the next couple of years.

Mary Ellen is concerned about the virus, so we were constantly rubbing our hands with sanitizer gel, which is why several of my shots landed not in the hole but in the lake.

Despite all the food people had brought, I wasn’t allowed to eat anything because, to quote my wife, “No way your hands are completely clean after you’ve touched every person’s equipment in the neighborhood.”

I looked up the history of cornhole and there were over a dozen theories about when the game began and how it got its name. My favorite was from a woman who claims her-great grandfather, in l899, found some rotten corn and

a plank with a hole in it. Her grandfather’s name, she says, was Timothy Cornhole. Hmmm, very convenient. If his last name had been Backgammon, well how confusing would that have been?

The day after that neighborhood gathering, I saw a neighbor outside and I asked him if he had played the previous night because I didn’t recognize his legs. Peter, who is an engineer, said he would have done better had he taken into account the lubricity of the board. When I got home, I looked up the term “lubricious,” by mistake. If you Google that word, you’ll agree it would have made the game a lot more exciting.

Smith, who grew up entranced by radio personalities, wanted to “deejay” for a living. In doing so, he quickly realized that he would need a unique persona and style to make his mark in an overcrowded and competitive field. Thus, he spent countless hours mimicking the patter of black radio hosts who spun the day’s coolest discs while apparently having a blast on the air.

Brooklynite Bob started his career in the early 1960s when he signed on with WYOU-AM in Newport News, Va. Enchanted listeners became convinced that they were grooving with a black hepcat by the name of “Daddy Jules.”

His next move took him to KCIJ-AM in Shreveport, La.,

His rapt listeners dug the day’s grooviest platters amid spiels for everything from diet pills (made of sugar) to religious tracts to medical “cures.” In the studio, Wolfman was said to act every bit as “off the wall” as he sounded, his face contorting, his eyes bulging and his hands waving as he howled and growled his way through each shift.

Returning to the states, he drifted from station to station for years. Along the way, many listeners found themselves wondering: just what does this guy actually look like? (The

Wolfman felt that not being seen added to his mystique.) Eventually several Kansas City college students offered him enough serious cash for an in-person appearance. He reluctantly agreed, insisting that first his payment — all in $20 bills — be brought to his house via a Brinks truck.

Eating a whole food plantbased lifestyle seems to get easier and easier once you set your mind to it and realize, for the majority of us, eating off plant foods in moderation is just a license to justify what you eat.

There is so much that is out of our control right now, but what we can control is what we are putting in our mouths and that we are moving to the best of our abilities. Nutrition is going to be key in your health.

A friend of my husband’s has a large garden and he gave us a variety of squash last week. I love me some squash! Squash is a superfood filled with beneficial

antioxidants that can protect you from disease and enhance your immune system. The scientific name for squash is cucurbita and since squash contains seeds and develops from the flower-producing part of a plant, it is botanically a fruit. They are low calorie and high in vitamins A, D and C, and rich in potassium along with a host of other vitamins and minerals.

The young fruit is known as summer squash and are considered a nonstarchy vegetable.

They have a tender and edible rind, which leads to a shorter life unlike winter squash. Summer squash would be yellow squash, zucchini or pattypan.

Sautéing a simple mixture of yellow squash and/or zucchini along with mushrooms and onions make a lovely dish.

Winter squash is a more mature fruit with a hardened tough ring. Most winter squash can be stored for use all winter.

There are at least 11 variety of winter squash including: Butternut, pumpkin, spaghetti, delicata, hubbard and buttercup.

I cooked a buttercup last night and just winged it by cleaning out the seeds from the top as you would a pumpkin and then sprinkling nutmeg on the inside and dicing up an unpeeled apple and placing that in the cavity.

So it’s time to sit back and go over your wintertime road rules.

Wherever you live, always check the weather forecast before getting behind the wheel. Blizzards and black ice are a concern in snow country, while hurricanes or sandstorms can make driving in warm climates just as treacherous.

If you haven’t already, take your auto in for its annual checkup. Have all belts and fluids topped off. Install winter tires and make sure their air pressure and tread are up to par.

Toss a blanket and warm hat or cap in the back seat.

Tuck a windshield ice scraper and snow brush under the

front seat.

Check your disaster kit to make sure it has a flashlight and batteries, first-aid kit, candle and matches, gloves and snacks. Check the trunk to see if you have battery jumper cables and road flares. A shovel might also be handy.

During the winter, don’t let your fuel level drop below half a tankful. And don’t venture out when the weather’s bad.

When you do head for a drive, brush and scrape off all ice and snow from the windshield, windows, mirrors, hood, bumpers, cameras and any other sensors on the vehicle. Let the engine run a few moments before backing out of the driveway.

Dashing through the snow is a no-no. Take it easy. Avoid quick stops and sudden turns, they can slip-slide you into trouble. And give traffic around you plenty of room.

If you’ve grown up in this type of weather, remind yourself how to relax during a skid on icy roads: take your foot off the gas and don’t slam on the brakes. If the back end fishtails, steer into the direction of the skid.

After some slowing down, you pump the brakes gently to gain control.

Staying home is the healthiest way to avoid a driving disaster during winter cold. But using your head can help make a trip through the snow a more pleasant experience.

Preheat your oven to 400 F for four squash halves. Bake cut side facing down on baking pan lined with parchment paper for 25 to 35 minutes until the squash is fork tender.

To make the quinoa filling: 1. Water saute onions and

ingredients, the nuts or seeds, cranberries, thyme, sage, pepper, cinnamon and add salt to taste. Remove from heat.

Christian author finds stability in the fact that God never changes %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I find comfort in Malachi 3:6,” stated Ruth Deyneka Erdel. “The Lord never changes. It’s been 70 years since I sailed to Europe as a missionary when I was 22 years old.

Now I’m 92 and have outlived all my siblings. But the Lord never changes. That has given me stability and a sense of purpose as a missionary and writer.”

Erdel spent 2.5 years in Germany and France doing missionary work after World War II. When she married Jack Shalanko, the couple served as missionaries to Ecuador for 30 years.

“There we did Russian radio Bible broadcasts,” Erdel said.

In 1980, they moved back to the states. When Erdel was 65, her husband died.

“Then I was invited to speak at women’s meetings in Russia and Ukraine. Those women had been under communist rule for many years. After communism broke and they came to Christ, they didn’t know how to live the Christian life.

They requested that I write a book telling them how to grow spiritually.”

When Erdel was in her 90s, she wrote a book titled “My

Father’s House.” “My life has always been surrounded with memories of my Christian parents. This book was written to tell the story of my father, Peter Deyneka’s, life and how he came to America. It’s filled with Bible verses and also outlines the way to live a Christian life.”

“He came here as a 16-yearold youth,” she said. Back in Belarus, people were dying of starvation. Fathers sent their oldest sons to America to find a job and send money home to their families.”

When World War I broke out, Deyneka was not able to go back to Belarus until 1925.

“In the meantime, my father got very homesick. He wandered the streets of Chicago alone. However, when he heard the gospel of Jesus Christ at a street meeting in his own language, his life was never the same. Accepting Jesus into his heart, he was happy and content.”

Deyneka began attending Moody Church in Chicago. In 1925, he went back to Russia to preach, to visit his family and to tell them about his personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

It was there that he met and married Erdel’s mother, Vera, and brought her with him to America. “I was born in Chicago,” the Mishawaka resident said.

She added, “My father’s heart was always with the Russian-speaking people. After attending a Bible institute, he founded the Slavic Gospel Association in 1934, to share the love of Jesus with the people of Russia.”

Erdel married a widower, Paul Erdel, in June 1996.

“We served as missionaries in Ecuador at the same time and our children went to the same international school,” Erdel stated.

Erdel has two grown children, three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

She has just finished writing a book titled “Daughters of the King,” showing women how to find refuge under the wings of Jesus. A future book, “Peter’s Prayers,” will give readers a glimpse of some of her father’s answered prayers.

Truth and legend about Amelia Earhart %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Fables have had time to become confused with the facts about the life and loss of Amelia Earhart.

So many myths surround the career of the famed flyer that the truth has become hidden in historical rewrites.

We know that she was born July 24, 1887, in Atchison, Kan. She apparently developed a passion for adventure at a young age and learned to fly an airplane.

In 1928, Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane — achieving celebrity status even though she wasn’t the pilot. She kept a log of the 20hour, 40-minute trip while a pilot and co-pilot handled the controls.

Four years later, Earhart piloted a Lockheed Vega 5B from Newfoundland to Ireland to become the first woman to make a solo nonstop transatlantic flight.

She set several other records and wrote best-selling books about her experiences. She also was instrumental in forming The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

And then she disappeared.

During an attempt to fly around the world in 1937 in a Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan vanished

over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.

Various theories have been offered as to how they disappeared without a trace on July 2, 1937.

One of the most controversial is the survival theory. It claims Earhart survived World War II in Japanese custody and then somehow was repatriated back to the United States in 1945. Some researchers give this story a faint possibility.

Another idea — that Earhart and Noonan crash-landed in Saipan and were captured by the Japanese shortly after — was chronicled in “Daughter of the Sky,” a biography by Paul Briand Jr. published in 1960.

The book prompted CBS newsman Fred Goerner to travel to Saipan four times to interview numerous native “eyewitnesses” and write his best-selling “The Search for Amelia Earhart” in 1966. According to Goerner’s theory, Earhart made a forced landing on or near the Japanese-held Marshall Islands in the central Pacific.

There reportedly is considerable evidence indicating the two might have been held as prisoners on Saipan in the Marianas Islands.

In Donald M. Wilson’s “Lost Legend” (1993) as well as “With Our Own Eyes: Eyewitnesses to the Final Days of Amelia Ear-

hart” by Mike Campbell (2002), other eyewitness accounts have been recorded.

However, no hard evidence exists to support any Earhart survival theory. Specifically, no evidence, either documented or anecdotal, has been found that supports the idea that Earhart ever left Saipan.

The pilot’s “eyewitnessed” presence on Saipan remains a major area of contention. Some claim simply that Earhart and Noonan died at the hands of the Japanese and their bodies were buried secretly.

Post-war survival rumors persist, however. There was a bizarre story about her living in the Japanese Emperor’s Palace in Tokyo as Hirohito’s mistress.

This, combined with the theory of a government conspiracy to “repatriate” Earhart, would have to have been an extremely secret matter.

Questions persist. If she did survive, how could Earhart never connect with her family — especially her mother, with whom she was extremely close? Or her sister Muriel? Her secretary, Margot de Carie, said Earhart “would swim across the ocean to her home and family if she were alive.”

‘Disco Decade Rides: Cars of the 1970s’ exhibit opens The Studebaker National Museum examines the decade of leisure suits, bell bottoms and eight tracks in its newest exhibit “Disco Decade Rides: Cars of the 1970s.”

The 1970s produced some memorable automobiles. Automakers faced numerous challenges including a fuel embargo, safety and emissions regulations, resulting in a decade of industry-wide change and adaptation. The traditional large American automobile became an endangered species as consumer tastes favored smaller, fuel-efficient cars and increased overseas competition further challenged the industry.

“Disco Decade Rides: Cars of the 1970s” highlights some of the decade’s iconic automobiles and the stories behind them. Join

Studebaker for a celebration of land yachts and vinyl tops as it features some of the 1970s’ premier rides. The exhibit is open until March 28, 2021.

AFA provides virtual programs and memory screenings Memory screenings should be an important part of everyone’s health and wellness routine.

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America provides free, virtual memory screenings every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to anyone wishing to receive them.

There are no age or insurance requirements. The program allows individuals to receive oneon-one, confidential memory screenings from a qualified health professional using their computer, smartphone or tablet.

These virtual screenings are available in English and Spanish and take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It involves a series of quick, noninvasive questions in order to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and a variety of other intellectual functions.

Following the test, the screener will then review the

results with the individual and suggest more extensive testing if necessary.

Booking a flight? Ask these new questions %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A few years ago, colleagues heading to Europe gave themselves plenty of layover time (over eight hours) between landing and boarding the second leg of their flight.

They wanted to avoid repeating a misadventure where they had missed a flight because mischievous weather and a mechanical problem delayed their initial flight.

Both weather and mechanical operations worked smoothly on this occasion and, when they checked in the British Air desk on arrival, they were told there was a flight to their desired destination in another 90 minutes. When asked if there were any seats, the airline counter personnel all smiled, nodded

and said there were plenty.

The travelers pulled out their tickets to have them changed for the handy next flight. Still smiling, the counter manager pushed them back and said the tickets couldn’t be exchanged and the fare was 81 euros each.

And no, there would be no refund on the tickets they’d already bought for the later flight.

The flyers tucked their tickets back in their travel bag and spent a leisurely day lounging around, window shopping and dining in the airport until their evening flight.

Their return home was the last time they flew British Air. Their airline experience hasn’t improved much since then, but they’re now more aware of the airlines’ high-handed practices and ask a lot more questions

before booking any flight.

The shock waves weaving through the travel industry due to COVID-19 have resulted (among many distressing turns of events) in booked travel of all varieties being cancelled.

This has left thousands of travelers holding worthless travel packages and tickets, with no hope of any refund.

In most cases, the airlines have offered vouchers to make good on ticket holders’ travel plans if they re-book within 24 months.

However, there’s no assurance the customers will get the same level of seating, for the same price, on the same type of aircraft, for the same flights.

With the travel industry hemorrhaging profusely right now, don’t expect a rosier

picture for travelers when the pandemic ends. You can bet prices will soar to recoup costs and adjust for the cutback in services.

To attract passengers in the meantime, United Airlines recently dropped its $200 change fee on domestic tickets except for basic economy fares. (Note that the ticket holder forfeits any surplus if the new fare is lower.) It may sound like a token move, but it’s a massive shift for the airline, which collected $625 million in ticket change fees in 2019, according to U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The announcement prompted Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines to follow suit. The companies

also have initiated a series of what they consider innovative customer service benefits.

So among the things to ask when booking a flight these days: • Have standby fees been waived?

• What flights have eliminated change fees?

• Is there a credit if the new fare is lower than the existing price?

“We want our customers to book and travel with peace of mind,” stated Delta CEO Ed Bastian, “knowing that we’ll continue evaluating our policies to maintain the high standard of flexibility they expect.”

So go ahead! You should ask a lot of questions when you make your travel plans.

AFA offers resources for those with Alzheimer’s and caregivers The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America has a variety of resources available to help both those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, but also their caregivers. The AFA website, www. alzfdn.org, includes information about Alzheimer’s disease, warning signs and symptoms, healthy aging, memory screening and programs and services available to help families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

With the current coronavirus pandemic, there are also multiple resources available on keeping loved ones safe, reduc-

ing caregiver stress, connecting with someone in long-term care and staying active in isolation.

Staying active isn’t just physical, either. Memory recall activities such as listening to music or looking through old photos albums can help. Small chores like matching socks, arts and crafts or flower arranging can help with sensory stimulation for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Reading books, playing memory games or trivia, and doing puzzles help to stimulate the brain. Socially, sending photos

Martin shares interview with Pearl Harbor survivor World War II documentarian Larry Martin will present a screening of his interview with Werner Klemm, Pearl Harbor survivor, entitled “Larry Martin’s World War II: In Their Own Words” in partnership with the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library.

Klemm was stationed aboard the USS Dobbin, a destroyer tender about 200 yards behind the USS Arizona on the “Day of Infamy,” the day Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Martin’s interest in World War II history and his passion for both gathering and sharing the stories of the men and women of the war has sparked the creation of the “In Their Own Words” project.

Dehydration is especially perilous for oldsters because it can contribute to dizziness, light-headedness and lowered cognitive ability.

A couple quick tests can alert you to a need for taking in some liquid: 1. Press one of your fingernails for about five seconds to squeeze out the color. Then let go. It should regain its normal shade within three seconds if you’re properly hydrated.

2. Pinch your skin into a tent.

Hillman, located in northern Michigan, is approximately 20 miles west of Alpena. It offers big city amenities in a beautiful rural setting.

Thunder Bay River meanders quietly through the town. Annual events around Hillman include: Mill River heritage festival; regional fishing festivals; Blessing of the Bikes & ATVs; the veterans celebration, VJDay and the Buck Pole hunting event. The Brush Creek grist mill is an historic refurbished local icon. Tourists visit this village to experience hunting & fishing, elk viewing and golf, among other things.

Hunters can find many types of game in season in the area. Deer, waterfowl, rabbits and other small game can be found. Fishing on Michigan’s 11th largest inland lake, Fletcher Pond, can hook pan fish, northern pike, largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill and black crappie.

Nearby bait shops, boat rentals and cabins can aid in a prosperous outing.

Hillman also offers a unique experience labeled a top adventure attraction by Destinations Magazine: the Elk-Viewing Dinner Ride.

Mid-century modern house both startling and striking Mid-century modern style of home architecture may not be for everyone, but to see it in its purest and most free-flowing form is indeed striking. *5($7 The house (6&$3(6 in question, %\ 5RG .LQJ located in Columbus, was owned by the late industrialist/philanthropist J. Irwin Miller. He’s the man who built Cummins Engine into a worldwide corporation.

The home, now owned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and designated a National Historic Landmark, reopened to the public in August after being closed since March. Tours are offered 12:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Cost is $25 per person.

Commissioned in 1952, the home features an open layout with bold splashes of color, floor to ceiling book and display cases and a large conversation pit in the living room. Interior walls and floors are white marble and floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outdoors up close and personal. Entrance to the 8,600-square-foot structure is probably the most unassum-

The roof is flat, giving the home a low profile. For a house of such grandeur, the three-car, terrazzo-floored carport with large storage compartments on both sides is unexpected.

The clothesline off the large kitchen/laundry room is hidden from view by translucent panels. Unique to the home is the fact that the ceilings are supported by cruciform steel columns instead of the interior

walls. Skylights around the perimeter of the rooms let natural light enter.

As you might expect, this is not a Bob the Builder project.

Utah’s national parks leave you breathless %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Full four-wheel drive didn’t seem to be enough to hold us from dropping 1,300 feet over the narrow cliffside ledge as I clung to my heart.

Gaping at the towering walls whose sharp pinnacles leapt skyward, it looked like the earth had been splashed with multi-hued red dyes, all running together.

Such is life among the five national parks of southern Utah: Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion.

These parks share uncompromising splendor, a history of both the earth and the country, and a sense of personal sanctuary. Yet they each have their differences.

These mystical worlds were created over the ages by the movement of the earth, water and wind, rain and drought freezes and thaws, and plenty of erosion. After more than 150 million years, they are still works in progress.

Arches National Park is a mecca of some of nature’s most intriguing architectural designs. The rock formations span space and confound logic. With more than 900, it’s the largest concentration of natural arches in the world.

The trail to Delicate Arch, one of the park’s most famous, requires hiking slick rock at seemingly 90-degree angles at times. The visual wonder makes it worth the climb.

Nearby Canyonlands requires a four-wheel drive vehicle. The park is a series of spectacular views strung across hundreds of miles of remote wilderness. “Scenic Overlook” signs become redundant.

Though the house was designed for entertaining, the Millers raised their family of five children (two boys and three girls) in this house. They’re said to have loved to run across the living room and jump into the 12-by-12-foot conversation pit where they also held their slumber parties.

Grandview Point offers a panorama that stretches across countless canyons, providing a broad view of the entire park.

Shafer Trail, a dirt road that’s rough in spots and very rough in others, is bordered on one side by perpendicular cliffs and on the other by the aforementioned 1,300-foot sheer drop.

Although geologic history is stressed in every park, it’s what defines Capitol Reef.

The park’s rock ranges from 80 million to 270 million years old.

A stroll along the nearby

Grand Wash River bed, so narrow in parts you can touch both canyon walls at the same time, evoked old film images of the lonesome cowboy out on the trail. This is Butch Cassidy country.

He used to ride along this stream bed (it had water in it then) and hide among the caverns in the cliffs.

Not surprisingly, the area is now called Cassidy Arch.

Bryce Canyon is synonymous with hoodoos — phantasmagoric shapes emerging from weird and wonderful rock formations. There are thousands of the little (and not so little) guys in all shapes, colors and sizes. The park’s unique rain and ice patterns sculpt them out of the rusted limestone.

Miss Grace Imrie: Forgotton ‘nurse hero’ %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU At her death on March 17, 1972, former South Bend resident Miss Grace Imrie, at age 97, left behind a legacy of her life that should amaze and intrigue most any historian.

Miss Imrie was born to David and Tasker Imrie on “April 29, 1874,” in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. She came to South Bend in 1905 and soon after became a U.S. citizen.

Going back to her very early years, we learn that little Imrie was only “two years old” when “Custer was making his last stand at Little Big Horn…”

Further, over her lifetime, she could still recall all of the wars “from the Boer War in 1899 to the current struggle in Vietnam.”

While in France, “She was stationed for a time near the action at Le Mans and near Tours where returning soldiers were received for treatment.”

The nurses, as she recalled, were “billeted in chalets…”

When the “Armistice was signed” on Nov. 11, 1918, Imrie “remained on duty for several months.” Imrie died at the “Indiana State Soldiers Home Hospital” in Lafayette on “March 17, 1972;” age 97.

Her nursing career spanned from 1908 to 1960; the postGreat War years finding her at South Bend’s Memorial Hospital. Her dedicated nursing ended when she was “sidelined by arthritis” at age 84. Before her death, Miss Imrie resided in Bremen Manor in Bremen, but had little space for her items from the past. She did, however, keep “her Army watch, medals and a few pictures,” and “she also has her nurse’s cape, which is in surprisingly good condition after 50 years.”

At her death, there were no siblings left alive, however, a “niece” (unknown name) is mentioned in Miss Imrie’s obituary. Imrie was taken back to Brockville, Ontario, Canada.

It’s not known to this writer as to what happened to Imrie’s Great War or nursing items so cherished by her.

It should be noted that Miss Imrie never married but dedicated her entire life to the “boys” of the Great War and to those she served at Epworth and then Memorial Hospitals.

Perhaps there are still nieces or nephews still alive in Canada who may be proud of their aunt’s legacy.
