Julian helps empower young girls through Girls on the Run %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU While Jody Eckrich Julian currently works in the office manager and administration role for Girls on the Run, she has held multiple positions in the 12 years since it was started in Michiana.

“I have had hands in almost everything in one way or another,” she commented.

Julian lived a couple doors down from Amy Cooper Collier when Collier moved to town from Arizona, looked for the local Girls on the Run and discovered Michiana had no council. That first year was spent becoming a nonprofit, getting sponsors and setting up a board. Julian worked

primarily as a volunteer helping raise funds for their council. As they began to set up the board, Julian became a member and continued to help fundraise. Her goal for the local Girls on the Run was to make it a household name.

She then became the development coordinator, becoming a paid member of GOTR and therefore no longer able to be on the board. As development coordinator, she continued her fundraising efforts by bringing in both individual and business sponsors to sponsor girls, teams or even the annual 5K. Many of the companies who she brought in to donate 12 years ago continue to donate today.

keeping responsibilities including ordering merchandise and shirts for coaches and program participants. She stepped down from the development coordinator position to focus more of her time on her children.

Now she continues with her bookkeeping duties as well as office manager and administrative assistant duties. The administrative duties she enjoys because she is able to do it in her own time. She continues to assist with development as requested and does all the merchandise ordering, reimbursement, paying bills and more.

This year only Julian is assisting the program director. She is helping at coaches training, putting together bags for each of the coaches and doing practice lessons. While typically this is done in a large assembly line with more than 20 volunteers, Julian stated this year she simply did most of it at home.

While GOTR is normally a 10 week program in the spring, this year it will only be an eight week program starting later so it can be done primarily outdoors. There will be 55 sites this year and 35 5Ks so each team can have their own 5K to promote social distancing. Julian will also train others in how to set up and take down the arches for the 5K. As a kid, Julian ran track at St. Matthew’s School. She found her track coach to be really encouraging and a good friend and mentor.

That is what GOTR reminded her of. She enjoys how it helps girls learn to be strong young women, conditioning their minds and bodies for a 5K while also finding their true selves and being happy with themselves.

Decades later, while spreading the word about GOTR, Julian kept thinking about Coach Paula and decided to attempt to reconnect with her. After finding Paula, Julian was surprised when Paula greeted her on the finish line at the 5K that year as she had many times before in grade school.

They knew that Jesus’ body needed to be anointed with spices. Apparently, nobody else offered to help. None of the disciples went. Those many whom Jesus healed didn’t volunteer. So, Mary and Mary took it upon themselves and walked to the tomb.

The walk was probably dif-

ficult as they had lost hope.

The hope in their friend, Jesus, the hope of him starting a new kingdom, the hope of a Savior for the world. They could have just given up. They could have turned around and went home. After all, what difference does it make?

Nobody really cares, except me.

But they didn’t. They continued the journey to the tomb.

They continued to be faithful even though they thought they were all alone. However, the father was watching. He always does. God must have been pleased to see their devotion

and faithfulness.

No matter what we are dealing with in this life, we are still dealing with the same God. The God who created the galaxies, who created DNA, who created our souls, is the same God who watched Mary and Mary with love and who raised Jesus from the dead. He has the power of resurrection. He has the power to bring the dead to life, even if it’s our own hope and peace. He has the power to save us and he will.

Just like he raised Jesus, he will raise us, giving us new life.

Steer clear of these scams %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Wearing a mask and staying home to avoid contact with other people has been proclaimed as the safest way to avoid the coronavirus. But it doesn’t protect you from being robbed by crooks who are constantly searching for prey — especially those who attack the elderly.

Victims are easier to find when most of the population is pinned down by lockdowns, shutdowns and just plain fear of being hit by the virus.

A popular scam that has surfaced promises to do all the work to arrange and schedule an appointment for you to get a coronavirus vaccination — for a fee, of course. Once you’ve sent the money, you’ll never hear from them again.

Thieves will also call to ask for “missing information” so the government can send you a stimulus check. Just remember: you will never be asked by any official for personal information to qualify you for a stimulus check.

Scammers also hide out in plain sight in the slew of snail mail, email and telephone requests for charitable donations.

Before giving, check out the organization with the local Better Business Bureau. It’s best to just narrow down your giving to a few of your traditionally favorite charitable organizations.

A cyberspace commandment you should heed is, “Never open any email or text or answer a phone call if you don’t recognize the source.” Even that simple response can open a link for crooks to obtain enough information to steal your identity or clean out your bank account.

If you decide to talk to a caller, do so for only a couple of minutes and ask for their number so you can call them back. They’ll likely hang up on you.

If they do give you a number, don’t call that number.

If they told you they were calling about your credit card, call the number on the back of the card and tell them why you’re calling.

Don’t let any caller browbeat you. No matter how official or threatening they sound, do not give them any personal information. Scammers know this pandemic has made everyone a bit more tired, confused and vul-

nerable than normal, and pounce especially on seniors.

Another vicious scam is a call or email from someone pretending to be a relative or close friend caught up in a problem far away and in need of bail money to get

out of jail or ticket money to get home.

Before even considering contributing, call family members, friends and folks who know the individual to clarify the situation.

Former coach takes up writing %< /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Former athletic director, coach and teacher Kirby Whitacre likely has stories to tell from his years in education. But the stories he creates in his books are now the ones that excite him the most.

For example, in his historical novel “The Spirit Traveler,” Whitacre combined his

interest in history with his storytelling ability to fashion a cast of characters with whom he connected.

“I fell in love with my characters,” Whitacre said.

So much so that when it was the appropriate time to kill off one of those characters in the sequel, he said he couldn’t write that into the story.

ways had on his list of things to do in life. He studied to become a coach and an educator and, finally, an administrator, but his passion for history has always been part of his personal story.

He grew up in Union City, a small town that sits on the state line between Indiana and Ohio. From there, he remembers going to the locations of several of the forts that featured prominently in the Indian Wars of the late 1790s and early 1800s.

“I grew up 23 miles from Fort Recovery and within driving distance of Fort Green and Fort Wayne,” Whitacre recalled.

This early exposure to and excitement about the history of that time was the building blocks for his novel. That interest also included extensive research to accurately portray the story and develop the fictionalized account based on the lifestyle of the time.

Whitacre credits the language arts department at his high school in Union City for helping hone his writing talents. Although his goal was not to become an author, it gave him the skills he needed to develop a writing style and appreciation for the art.

Whitacre wrote coaching and academic administration focused articles for magazines and journals and shared poetry and columns with other publications.

He retired from his career in education in June 2018 from South Bend Community Schools Corp. He also worked in Westville and Zionsville.

“I wanted to be a coach,” Whitacre said.

Being a coach takes dedication, a useful character trait in the life of a novelist, too.

“There’s also a lot of strategy involved in coaching,”

He is married to Laureen, a pharmacist. The couple raised three children and live in the home his wife’s aunt lived and next to the home her parents lived in while growing up in South Bend.

Whitacre’s first published book is an overview of Buddhism. It was published in 2007 when he was 55. The book is written from the author’s own perspective as a worshipper.

“It felt like I was finally achieving my goals,” Whitacre said.

He is planning a revision to that book, among the list of other literary projects. This list includes a sequel to “The Spirit Traveler” and a children’s book that encourages

Whitacre said his mother was an important influence on his love of books and writing.

“My mother read to me from the time I was young,” he recalled. “I wish I had begun to write books sooner.”

Easter basket disc golf April 2 Ferrettie-Baugo Creek County Park will host Easter basket disc golf at 2 p.m. Friday, April 2.

The park will dress up the disc golf baskets to look like Easter baskets and kids can collect a piece of candy at each basket as they play. It’s a socially distant way to get out and have fun with the family. The event is a for kids age 12 and under with an adult. St. Joseph County Parks and St. Joseph County Health Department are partnering up to teach little ones about themselves and nature at the same time. Staff will teach kids about growing up healthy and then get moving with a themed game and explore the world.

It’s a great way to get active and socialize at a safe distance.

provides natural beauty and conservation %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU Nestled on Darden Road in South Bend lies a 120-acre nature preserve watched over by members of the St. Joseph County chapter of the Izaak Walton League. The local chapter was started in 1924 and it is a 100% volunteer run organization.

The mission and pledge of the members is: “To strive for the purity of water, the clarity of air and the wise stewardship of land and its resources; to know the beauty and understanding of nature, and the value of wildlife, woodlands and open space; the preservation of this heritage and to man’s sharing in it.”

The league owns land on both sides of the St. Joseph River as well as three ponds. There are a variety of trails in Izaak Walton along with an archery course.

The ponds and river are great for fishing, with two ponds known for having brown trout, steelhead, salmon, rainbow trout and bluegills. It is a family-oriented location, with memberships for individuals, families and students.

Many of the members recall coming to Izaak Walton as a child.

Tim Kanczuzewski, the fish and outdoor recreation director, recalled, “I’m going to be 58 and I remember coming here since I was seven or eight and fishing.”

John Manuszak, vice president, also shared he remembered coming to Izaak Walton as a child and feeling like he was able to live a real Huckleberry Finn lifestyle, floating rafts down the river and catching fish.

When Juday Creek was in peril from siltation, Izaak Walton was one of many groups to become a part of Save Our Streams. When Dominic Chaloner, a biologist at Notre Dame, asked to do a study on the property, the board was happy to open the area to him.

Kanczuzewski stated students and groups like to do studies at Izaak Walton because the land and water has been left so natural. Over 25 investigators, agencies and organizations and more than 150 Notre Dame students have participated in a variety of studies at Juday Creek since 1978. Water quality testing is also done to promote education and public health. These tests are also important for wildlife survival and recreation.

Joe Kapp, who has won a national title in archery, is in charge of the indoor and outdoor archery courses. Over the years there have been multiple different leagues playing at Izaak Walton since there is a certified archery course on-site.

For more than 50 years the Izaak Walton League has also been doing a tree giveaway for Arbor Day and Earth Day. This year the giveaway will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 2.

Trees this year include dogwood, redbud and white pine.

Each year the board also holds a free family fishing day for the community. This year the event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, June 5. Fishing poles and bait are provided. Children and adults are welcome.

Recently a few members have gotten together at the lodge to work on fly tying and share the skill with others who would like to learn.

Izaak Walton also offers an environmental scholarship each year.

Recently members have been focused on removing invasive species that have taken over at the reserve. The greatest of these invasive species currently is the Asian bush honeysuckle. In

order to bring the area back to nature, they are replacing these gap areas after removing invasive species with natural trees and bushes. They are currently

searching for volunteers with an interest in horticulture to help restore the native wold flowers and plants.

The most effective way to defeat them is to know how to identify scams and to ignore suspicious calls and emails.

One common tactic scammers use is posing as federal agents and other law enforcement. They may claim your Social Security number is linked to a crime. They may even threaten to arrest you if you do not comply with their instructions. Here are three things you can do: • Hang up right away or do not reply to the email.

• Never give personal information, money or retail

gift cards.

• Report the scam at oig. ssa.gov immediately. This is Social Security’s law enforcement team at the Office of the Inspector General.

You should continue to remain vigilant of phone calls when someone says there’s a problem with your Social Security number or your benefits.

If you owe money to Social Security, we will mail you a letter explaining your rights, payment options and information about appealing.

‘I Am … I Said’ Neil Diamond’s sixth Top 10 hit Neil Diamond Humor writer Dave Barry once invited the readers of his weekly syndicated newspaper column to vote for the %\ 5$1'$/ worst pop & +,// song of all $ %RRPHU %ODVW time. When 7R 7KH 3DVW over 10,000 letters piled up on his Miami office desk, he assembled them into Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs.

“MacArthur Park” took the high-

est “honor,” but fun-loving Barry offered jabs at several other tunes as well. One was Neil Diamond’s “I Am … I Said,” with Barry citing one particular set of odd lyrics: “I am … I said/To no one there/ And no one heard at all/Not even the chair.”

Barry’s gleeful response: “What kind of line is that? Is Neil telling us he’s surprised that the chair didn’t hear him? Maybe he expected the chair to say, ‘Woah, I heard that!’ ” Okay, funny enough. But a closer look at the song reveals some serious surprises.

Diamond, who was born Noah Kaminsky in New York in 1941, took a screen test in 1970 in hopes of playing comedian Lenny Bruce

in a forthcoming film. (Dustin Hoffman eventually won the role.) In an interview years later, Diamond described about how he had returned to his Los Angeles Holiday Inn room in a funk because he felt (correctly) that he had failed the audition.

Sitting alone at a small table with two chairs, he gazed out the window at the world of golden sunshine and palm trees. He was homesick for his native Brooklyn and feared that perhaps he had made a mistake in his recent move to California. (In an earlier minor hit, “Brooklyn Roads,” Diamond waxed nostalgic about gazing out the window of his third-floor childhood apartment.)

Diamond picked up his guitar

and within one hour wrote “I Am … I Said,” which would eventually become his sixth Top 10 single since 1966. He would spend the next four months honing the tune to his satisfaction.

Diamond’s label, Uni Records, questioned his line about the chair, but Diamond insisted that it stay. To him, it represented where a hotel room companion would have sat if there had been one that day. Others have pointed out that Diamond, who is Jewish, may have subconsciously gleaned the chair image from the Passover, which includes Jewish people keeping an empty chair for Elijah, who will eventually announce the coming of the Savior.

Diamond has since admitted

that much of the bulk of his song came from time spent in therapy in Los Angeles: “It was consciously an attempt on my part to express what my dreams were about, what my aspirations were about and what I was about. And without any question, it came from my sessions with the analyst.”

He has since proclaimed, “(‘I Am … I Said’) was by far the most difficult song I have ever written — and probably the best song I have ever written.”

By the way, Barry was so overwhelmed by the tsunami of hate mail that flooded in from Diamond’s fans that Barry soon wailed in print, “Please stop writing! You have convinced me! Neil Diamond is a music god!”

Fever isn’t always an enemy %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Paranoia has become as much a part of the pandemic as the coronavirus.

It’s what can cause panic when anyone develops a fever.

If you have a fever (your body temperature rises over 100 degrees Fahrenheit), contact your family doctor. It’s a sign that your body is fighting off an infection caused by some virus or bacteria.

In some cases, a fever can be regarded as an ally in helping your body fight off several types of infections.

Fevers usually last a couple or three days and there are several over-the-counter remedies to lower temperature.

Bacterial infections may call for an antibiotic, but in most cases it’s best to let the fever do its work. Lowering your temperature might inhibit its effectiveness.

Because your body is busy with this battle, you probably feel tired, achy and uncomfortable. You might also have the chills. All this is telling you to stay in bed and let your body repair itself.

An environmental fever (rising body heat caused by heated

surroundings) is a different matter.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to heat stroke.

They’re more likely to become dehydrated because their bodies are less sensitive to temperature changes.

Some medications can exacerbate this problem. And some

drugs can be the source of a fever. So discuss these concerns with your doctor.

When you do feel a fever, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Eat easy-todigest food because your body needs to use your energy to help you heal. And get plenty of warm, comfortable rest.

While COVID is raging around the globe, there are several other sources of fevers such as colds, flu, heat exhaustion and joint inflammation.

As with any medical condition or concern, call your doctor immediately when a fever strikes.

Finessing the art of fencing %\ /2,6 720$6=(:6., )HDWXUH :ULWHU Twice a week Louise Leighton can be found perfecting her fencing skills at the Indiana Fencing Academy in downtown Mishawaka. She is in distinct category in the sport of fencing, an activity in which she has engaged for about 25 years.

“I started fencing at age 38 after my children had become very involved with the sport. I was spending a lot of time providing ‘fencing mom support,’ ” Leighton explained. “I eventually concluded that in order to watch fencing I needed to understand it and, in order to really understand it, I needed to do it.”

That wasn’t an easy task, as she discovered there were not very many classes offered for the older novice fencer.

She learned the basic skills in a group class that included more fellow students aged 9 and older. Here, however, she gained the basic skills of footwork, target drills and general conditioning exercises.

Two years later and after individual lessons and practice bouting, Leighton was skilled

enough to earn a rating to compete.

While there may not be many senior citizens at Escrime du Lac, the fencing club at Indiana Fencing Academy, there are opportunities for senior aged athletes to compete.

A veterans’ level was added to the North American Cup tournament, which was used to determine eligibility to compete as part of the USA team in the North American Cup tournament.

“In golf, older players compete in the master’s tournaments. In fencing we now have veteran competitions,” Leighton said. “While age and guile can put up a very good game against youth and inexperience, many of us older fencers are more interested in fencing our contemporaries competitively.”

Leighton has found success at these high levels. She made the U.S. team to the Veteran World Championship three times.

“I was at the last one held in Egypt in the fall of 2019,” she said. “I doubt there will be any sort of tournaments for veterans until it becomes safe again

Fencing is a sport that requires a certain set of skills.

These include balance and general overall fitness. Fencers can experience something akin to “tennis elbow,” the result of repetitive movements holding a foil or sabre. Facing off against an opponent on the “strip” can be strenuous and leave participants breathing hard.

In addition to this aerobic workout, Leighton finds that the mental focus of the game is

beneficial. It is about strategy in addition to general fitness.

That becomes more important when a veteran fencer faces off with a younger opponent.

Leighton admits that she has had to adapt the way she fences as she has aged in the sport.

“It is a one-on-one sport,” Leighton, 63, said. “You analyze your opponent and you play your game. You develop a strategy. You don’t overextend; you wait for their mistakes.”

Fencing is a sport that welcomes interest from people of all ages. It requires some expense to acquire the equipment and also to develop a training program. But it is a sport for which Leighton is an advocate.

It draws interesting people and opponents often share bonding moments after tournaments, she said.

“If we both lost, we can commiserate with each other,” Leighton said.

—o— It was a unique publicity stunt dreamed up by employees of the Ball Band plant back in April 1946.

From the “jamboree jeep,” three girls from the plant rode around town and tossed candy kisses to those along the route. The girls were Miss Lucille Van Hoedt, Miss Josephine Jambrick and Miss Rita Baranowski.

Also on this jeep was a large hood-to-back bumper banner that proclaimed “Ball Band employees present the Dixie Jamboree.” The jamboree was billed a “An Old Fashioned Minstrel” to be held at “Mishawaka High School on April 26-27-28.”

This blackface minstrel show was presented in two parts consisting of “dancing, singing, specialty acts and plenty of jokes.” Jack Todd acted as “interlocutor” and provided comedy throughout the show.

We now focus on the promotional entries of the “Red Ball” newsletter of April 1946 on pages two and four; a newsletter that contained no Black employees in any photos throughout the letter.

I paraphrase or quote from page two: “Listen here Brother Crawford, tell me right now — is you is or is you ain’t gonna buy me a ticket to that minstrel? It’s goin’ to be at Mishawaka High School … and tickets are only 74¢; tickets for children only 44¢.” (Writer’s note: What an experience for students and children.)

Further, “Real burnt corkers … will be out there shufflin’ and singin’.” Some of those Ball Band cast members were Mike Zirille, Tom Snyder, Foss Starner, Murry Kerr, Jerry Kirk, Bob Clark, Ed Perry and Jack Todd. Many “purty gals singin’ and dancin’” would also perform. “Come on, Brother Crawford, I can’t wait any longer.”

Finally, we address a partial promotion of the jamboree on page four where we find: “He’s a Banjo player alright,” and it continues, “Yessah, he certainly is but you oughta see that darkie when he cuts loose and does a soft shoe dance in the Dixie Jamboree.”

“Oh, he’s my boy alright, and I’m goin’ to see him for sure when he comes here April 26, 27 and 28 … at Mishawaka High School.”

REAL Services celebrates 55 years serving St. Joseph County %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU REAL Services is celebrating 55 years of serving the community and helping people, especially seniors, live as independently as possible.

When the Studebaker plant closed in 1966, REAL Services began through a grant as a way to help re-train some of the older workers. The focus was primarily St. Joseph County.

In 1972, REAL Services became the first in Indiana to have the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for senior volunteers. In 1973, they began

the first nutrition site in the state.

After obtaining funds for the nutrition site, the goal was to provide not only healthy meals, but also social- %(&.< =$6(&. ization for the senior population.

REAL Services became an Area Agency on Aging in 1974, which allowed them to expand their programs and service area to Elkhart, Kosciusko,

Marshall and LaPorte counties.

The organization was then asked by the state to take over the energy assistance program in 1981. In 1982, they also took over the weatherization program, which helps provide weatherization measures and inspections for income eligible homes. This led to REAL Services being designated a Community Action Agency in 1985. As such, they serve low income individuals and families regardless of age and help them to live independently.

They serve St. Joseph, Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko and Marshall counties as a Community

Action Agency.

After receiving approval from the state, REAL Services was chosen to pilot the CHOICE program, which helped to provide state funded in-home services and support to clients.

REAL Connections was then launched. This publication gives information about all of REAL Services’ services and programs and is distributed to the community.

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County awarded REAL Services with the Leighton Award for Nonprofit Excellence in 2003, for 36 years of outstanding services to the

older adult community.

One of only two Indiana agencies to receive the award, REAL Services was designated an Aging and Disability Resource Center by the government.

After 20 years working with REAL Services in a variety of roles, Becky Zaseck was promoted to president and CEO following Lester Fox’s retirement. She quickly realized they were reliant on state and federal funds and these funds were beginning to flatline while the need in the community was increasing. She wondered, Continued on page 11

Sandy Redden acts as a real servant through volunteer work %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU Born and raised a Catholic living in South Bend, Sandy Redden grew up near Notre Dame. She is a member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and has also worked closely with the university, both in her own businesses and volunteer work.

Before she retired, Redden worked closely with Notre Dame in her own businesses. In one business, she and her husband were in charge of parking for events.

In her tour business, she worked with the human resource departments of local businesses to give tours to new hires. One of the tour scripts she wrote for her business

included Notre Dame and the Basilica. Therefore, when she decided to volunteer at the Basilica, she was able to hit the ground running because she already knew the history.

Tuesday was Redden’s tour guide day at the Basilica until all tours were temporarily ended last year due to the coronavirus.

She would also give tours Fridays when there was a home football game.

Since the 1970s, Redden has also been a member of the Christ Child Society, though she is not as active today. She would frequently volunteer to help with mailings and donate clothing.

Approximately 15 years ago, Redden decided to volunteer

her time with REAL Services as well. Normally she and a group of around 10 other women would get together to work on mailings.

These mailings needed to be sent out in a timely fashion, so Redden and the other volunteers needed to be precise and self-guided in the work. She mentioned they all knew what needed to be done and so it was good to have conversations and socialize with one another while completing the volunteer work.

Through her Catholic upbringing, Redden learned all about how a “person’s a real servant.” One should live their religion and their faith as a servant, helping others as much as they can.

“If you’ve got something, you

share,” she stated. She has raised her children to follow in her footsteps and help those less fortunate when they can. Redden believes items and skills are meant to be shared. For example, she would always save clothing that had been outgrown to give away to Christ Child or another organization because there is always someone out there who could use it. Sharing with others and being a servant also feeds her faith and gives her a sense of peace and tranquility.

Redden loves learning all the stories of South Bend and considers herself a storyteller. In her volunteer work, particularly giving tours at the Basilica, she loves to meet new people and share her stories with others.

She firmly believes volunteering can be even more beneficial for the volunteer as the person who is being helped. With everything on hold for the last year, Redden is eager to get back out and volunteer.

REAL Services businesses go to support REAL Services.

In 2013, the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services became a division of REAL Services.

REAL Services employees were able to learn about a dementia village in the Netherlands in 2019 and receive training on how the Netherlands works to normalize and care for dementia patients.

Coming soon, REAL Services is creating Care Connections at Milton Village. They will create a day center with a village atmosphere for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. This village

setting will allow patients to move about and engage in activities, such as get a haircut or go to eat. It will also house support, education and respite opportunities for their caregivers.

Last year, REAL Services continued to serve the community during the pandemic and actually served more people than previously.

This year’s Age of Excellence will focus on the history of REAL Services and their plans moving forward. They hope to have an open house in the fall.

St. Joseph Cemetery and Funeral Home — owned by the people, for the people In 1890, the Polish people residing on the west side of South Bend objected to having to submit to what was viewed as a monopoly on burial plans at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus of Notre Dame. So, they joined with their neighbors and, with a combination of donated and purchased land, established the first 79 acres of the St. Joseph Cemetery that they could care for and take pride in. A hardworking group of Polish leaders of each parish, the Polish Falcons and the editor of the Polish newspaper formed a cohesive group to take on the new cemetery project.

Polish residents donated pieces of their farm land to create their own cemetery in 1901. Other community members joined in and became members of the association by donating money to the cause or became deed holders by purchasing a burial plot for their family within the cemetery; others donated their time and/ or their money for the upkeep and care of the cemetery. Now, shortly after the establishment of the cemetery, “by the people and for the people” there became an issue with the Bishop of the Fort Wayne diocese, who governed the churches and cemeteries in South Bend. The dispute came about because the bishop demanded ownership and the deed

A building was purchased in South Bend to build a kitchen, which would become the permanent home for the Meals on Wheels and nutrition program.

In 2010, the first REAL Room Makeover Raffle was held, now an annual fundraiser. These social enterprise efforts, using private businesses to raise money for REAL Services, now includes the kitchen’s catering business and the REAL Grille. All profits from these

Tiptoeing through a career Tiny Tim is typically remembered as a disposable novelty performer, but he deserves better than being a mere %\ 5$1'$/ footnote in & +,// entertainment history.

He was born Herbert Butros Khaury in Manhattan in 1932, the son of immigrants who toiled in the garment industry. At home, Khaury spent hours mesmerized by his parents’ sublime 78-rpm discs of Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee. Outside, neighborhood bullies taunted him and at school the mild-mannered misfit ignored classroom subjects to daydream about the girls there.

He took up the ukulele after seeing Arthur Godfrey playing one on television. Shortly thereafter, Khaury set music as a career goal. He left school at 17, grew his hair down to his shoulders (an unusual move at the time), and learned hundreds of old-time songs. Eventually, he found club work as a novelty act in a few local dives, where

he strummed his instrument and sang in a quavery but pure falsetto, as well as in a rich, confident male baritone. This unusual skill allowed him to sing duets with himself.

He adopted a series of stage names, including Judas K. Foxglove and Larry Love, the Singing Canary. In 1963, his manager proposed the English-sounding title Sir Timothy Timmins.

Khaury preferred Tiny Tim, though, after the iconic Charles Dickens character.

Tiny was eventually able to secure better gigs in Greenwich Village. From there, he moved up to a trendy New York club called The Scene, where he formed friendships with such pre-fame musicians as the Lovin’ Spoonful, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan.

Tiny’s life changed dramatically one night in 1967. Mo Astin, the head of Reprise Records, caught Tiny’s act at The Scene and offered him a recording contract on the spot. The result was a future Top 10 album, “God Bless Tiny Tim,” which contained his lone hit single of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” The ditty, a laughable anomaly in an era Continued on page 13

What’s your why for eating healthy?

Pursue the change. Adopt the mindset that the action has already happened — I am plant-based. Sounds like a mind game, but as many things in life — it is a mindset. If you want an excuse as to why you can’t make changes, there are millions, but if you set your mind to the change, you’re already there.

Often you hear that people need a why in order to make changes; boy do I have a few for you: • Two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight.

• Fifty percent of U.S. adults have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.

• Every 52 seconds an adult in the U.S. dies from heart disease.

• Fifty-eight percent of the American diet consists of ultra-

processed foods.

• Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke.

• Strokes are the leading cause of serious long-term disability in adults.

This isn’t meant to scare you, but maybe frighten you enough to see that it may be time to implement those changes that you know will improve your health. There are consequences to eating plant-based and they are good. We’ve talked about how to start improving your eating choices by eating more plant-based meals; maybe it’s every breakfast or maybe breakfast and lunch (even better), leaving dinner as your only meal where you consume meat, fish and dairy. Or jump right in and say “I am plantbased” for the next week or month. Committed change will change you.

So what are the consequences of eating plant-based?

The top five, according to MD Anderson cancer center, are: • Reduce your risk for cancer.

A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grain, beans, nuts and seeds fuels your body with the phytonutrients critical to good health.

• Immune system support.

Plants have essential nutrients that you cannot get from

other foods. The vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants in plants help keep your cells healthy and your body in balance so that your immune system can function at its best.

• Plant foods reduce inflammation.

• Reduced body fat achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

• Plants are high in fiber, adding a whole host of benefits including lowering cholesterol and stabilizing blood sugar.

And let me add a couple — • Whole food plant-based foods are delicious so you will enjoy eating healthy.

• Energy level will rise. Your body just wants to get up and go because you aren’t feeling sluggish from what you ate.

• Taste buds change and cravings stop.

No matter your age, no matter your present health concerns, eating clean, healthy meals will change that mind game into a mindset that is beneficial to your life.

salad) Ingredients 4 servings 1 can (15 oz) cooked garbanzo beans (chick peas) drained and rinsed 1 celery stalk finely chopped 1 cucumber finely chopped 1 cup green onion or less to taste 2 dill pickles chopped 4 tablespoons sunflower seeds 4 tablespoons tahini 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard Instructions Combine all ingredients in a

bowl, mashing garbanzo beans while leaving some of them in larger chunks.

1. Or place all ingredients in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine all ingredients (make sure to not over-process).

2. Serve tuno over a salad, in a lettuce wrap, in a pita or on your favorite bread.

Tiny married two more times and released numerous disparate records that always tanked.

He never could find that elusive second big hit.

On Nov. 30, 1996, Tiny Tim suffered a fatal heart attack at age 64, while performing at a small Minneapolis club. He had just finished singing “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.”

A teammate on our senior softball team who was a practicing osteopathic doctor in his younger days told us, “When in doubt on how to treat an injury or ache, try ice.”

It was a simple answer to a simple request by another team member who had twisted his wrist a bit when he stumbled over first base.

some sort of gel) and crushed ice have generally replaced ice cubes and can be wrapped around or held in place over an injury or ache. The comfort here is that the ice numbs the area and reduces the pain.

A general rule is that ice is the go-to therapy for a fresh injury, such as a sprained wrist or ankle, because heat can exacerbate swelling, bruising and bleeding.

Ice also dulls chronic pain and, as our doctor teammate explained, allows healing without being felt.

On the other hand, a comfortable heating pad or hot water bottle can soothe chronically aching muscles, ligaments and tendons that have been bruised or battered, as well as deep inflammation such as ongoing back and neck pain.

But heat also increases blood flow, so it should not be used on a bleeding injury.

Neither ice nor heat should be applied much longer than 20 minutes at a time and should be limited to about three times a day. Many medics support alternating ice and heat application over a short period of time.

Doctors also advise against falling asleep with an ice pack or heating pad applied to your problem area. Put a towel against your skin to protect it from the ice or heat.

There are times to use different applications for the same problem. For example, heat can ease the pain in an arthritic knee but ice should be used if the joint is swollen.

Other sources of temperature therapy are hot baths and cold showers.

As with all cases involving your health and welfare, check with your doctor to explore the best treatment in your case.

Coffee and conversation helps Center for Hospice Care patient It’s just a small, unassuming little building. The Boss’ Place offers breakfast staples, such as biscuits and gravy, to daily specials of a chicken salad croissant sandwich or blue gill dinner, all for a very affordable price.

For Richard Zawacki, a Center for Hospice Care patient, this little restaurant has been part of his weekly routine for over 13 years.

He is very social. If you spend more than 10 minutes with him, he’ll already be cracking jokes. He was a truck driver; he drove an oil truck and a coal truck. He was also a manager for Wagner Fuel. “That’s my backup,” he said, pointing to his

daughter, Sue Kline. “She knows more about me than I know.”

He laughed. She offered details throughout the conversation. It was evident that her support extended to many areas of his life.

Kline realized how important trips to The Boss’ Place were for him and, when the heart doctor told him he could no longer drive, it was disheartening. He signed up for care through CHC and Kline decided to ask if there might be some assistance driving him to his favorite spot.

Janet Van De Veire has been a CHC volunteer since 2016. “I like to socialize,” she said. “And you can

tell he’s very social.”

Kim Morrison, a Plymouth volunteer coordinator, paired the two together, especially to allow him some time at his restaurant.

He was pretty mobile and able to get into and out of the vehicle, which allowed for this very special volunteer mission.

Zawacki usually gets eggs and bacon or whatever seems delicious on the menu that day. He made Van De Veire get the gigantic pancake.

The two of them got along really well. He also had other friends that he’d talk with, all thanks to The Boss’ Place.

“I met a lot of people there,”

Zawacki said. “There were two of them that would sit at a table.

Never talked. One day, I asked one of the guys a question and since then he hasn’t been able to shut up.”

Van De Veire recognized that he had many friends there.

“When we’d go there with him, everyone would say hi and it was good to see him,” she shared.

This is quality of life. This is part of the support that Center for Hospice Care provides. Zawacki really gets along with his aide, Yolanda.

“She’s just as ornery as he is,” Van De Veire said, knowing that

the match has made all the difference in his care. Stacy, his nurse, also is able to dish the jokes back at him.

“They’re perfect for him,” she continued. “While we take care of his physical needs, we also know that feeding his social need is part of the emotional care we provide.”

There are so many life changes for those dealing with health issues. It is often the simple things of life — the daily routines and the little habits — that can foster our best life. So, even though it may be a cup of coffee and a quick conversation, these are the moments to look forward to.

History oozes from St. Augustine’s pores Not many American cities can boast a history that goes back 450 years.

St. Augustine, Fla, can!

It was *5($7 founded in (6&$3(6 1565 and is %\ 52' .,1* hands down the oldest city in the United States. On top of that, it has the oldest wooden school in the nation, a lighthouse that’s a couple centuries old, a huge fortress made out of broken shells that is the country’s only 17th Century masonry fort still standing and a college whose campus is touted as being the most beautiful in the nation.

In addition to all that, St. Augustine is headquarters to the Golf Hall of Fame, Lightner Museum of eclectic collections all accumulated and displayed in

First, the fort. Castillo de San Marcos, a popular national park, is constructed in the shape of a star with a wide moat around its exterior. It’s made of coquina, which is a soft limestone made up of broken shells. Doesn’t sound very impressive, but the British found it impenetrable on

two occasions. Unlike stone, coquina absorbs the impact of cannon balls and doesn’t crack. Some enemy projectiles even stuck in the walls. Most, however, just bounced off. After the barrage stopped at the end of the day, the Spaniards crept out under the cover of darkness, retrieved the cannon balls, melted them down to fit their own cannons and fired them back the next day.

The British finally gained control of the fort in 1763 through the Treaty of Paris.

They renamed it St. Mark. The U.S. Army took over in 1825 and named it Fort Marion, but in 1942 the original name was restored to honor its unique Spanish heritage. The best view of the old lighthouse is from the fort battlements.

Alumni of colleges and universities around the country will no doubt challenge the ‘beautiful campus’ claim of Flagler College.

It originally was the 540-room Ponce de Leon Hotel built by the railroad mogul Henry Flagler in the early 1900s as a vacation destination for his rich friends.

As you might expect, he spared no expense, specifying the finest marble and the most exotic woods from around the world.

The dome inside the main entrance is exquisite. It must be special to be a student in these extravagant surrounds.

St. Augustine’s culture is an eclectic mixture of Timucuan Indians, Spanish (they ruled Florida for more than 200 years), French, British, African, Minorcan, Seminole and Swiss which combine for a rather laid back citizenry.

Explorer Ponce de Leon is said to have sampled the fresh spring water at what is now The Fountain of Youth attraction.

Visitors can do the same, but will unlikely revert to their childhood.

Old town’s George Street is a treat to stroll. It’s chock-full of boutiques, restaurants, galleries and bars along with the nation’s oldest wooden schoolhouse. At the end of the street are two remaining pillars that formed the gate to the old fortified city.

The get on/get off tour trains are a really good way to get the lay of the land and learn some history at the same time.

Add to all that sunny weather and some of the greatest beaches in Florida. What’s not to like?

I am seeing record prices for old comics and vintage sports cards. Also, toys from the 1980s and 1990s are starting to sell very well. Gaming systems have also been doing very well since people are staying home more. Nintendo and Super Nintendo games and systems usually sell for the most. I have also been buying a lot of military items, old toys, advertising items, coins and pocket watches. Older holiday decorations have also been selling very well.

Halloween items sell the most followed by Christmas and Easter. Folk art and primitives are also doing very well.

I have always enjoyed antiques and have a deep appreciation for history. I go to several auctions each week, which helps me stay current with what people are buying and how much items are selling for. I also subscribe to many research sites. I am able to find the market value for almost any item you may have.

I have been in business for over 10 years. I believe in treating people fair. Because of this, a big part of my business comes from referrals or repeat clients. Often, when people call me to look at their collections or estates, they are pleasantly surprised to learn that items they considered worthless are actually

very valuable.

“Okay, Bob, let’s talk again when the pandemic is over.”

We called our friends John and Jane. “Hi, guys, we have an idea for a fun evening. Let’s all watch ‘The Crown’ on Netflix and make fun of the royal family.”

“Dick, we don’t have Netflix.

But we found a great show on the Food Network, ‘Amy Schumer Learns to Cook.’ ” “We don’t get the Food Network.”

“But surely you have Vudu TV?” “We didn’t want to take a chance. It sounded like a cult. I bet my brother has it.”

We made several other calls, becoming nervous that we were running out of friends we were compatible with. My wife loves old movies but we found very

few TCM subscribers. We discovered that the Wideners had satellite TV. They told us it was unlikely we had many interests in common. I felt like they were dishing us, so that was the end of that relationship.

We tried to find folks who subscribed to Acorn TV and who enjoyed British mysteries as much as we do, but most of our friends have Hulu, which I had wrongly assumed was just travel shows about Hawaii. My sister watches a lot of YouTube TV, a service I thought was limited to cat videos. I called my friend Mikki who said she just has an antenna on top her TV. Too bad. We had been friends for 30 years.

I had an idea. “Mary Ellen, I’m going to create an Excel spreadsheet where people can sign up and find other people who share similar services.

This would be a boon to friendships during this time of isolation.”

“I’m very impressed, Dick.”

“So, you like the concept?”

“No, it’s nutty, but I’m impressed you know how to use Excel.”

I logged onto eHarmony and Match.com to see if they even considered viewing options as an important issue in establishing a relationship. I even went on an adult site called Be Naughty, but when I entered my age, I was automatically transferred to Silver Singles.

With the hundreds of personal interests compared on these dating sites, there wasn’t a single question about cable TV or streaming preferences.

Just the same old unimportant inquiries: God-fearing or agnostic? Smoker or nonsmoker?

Permanent or casual relationship? Drinker or abstainer? All fine and good, but where was: Showtime or Epix? STARZ or Cinemax? Chromecast or Xbox?

If you don’t have it, have it installed. Hooking up is half the fun.

Beat coronavirus at home %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Questions and concerns about the COVID virus are lingering as long as its lingering effects.

The populace has to be reminded several times a day that getting the vaccine isn’t a license to quit wearing a mask.

Nor is vaccination a passport to travel at will around the city or countryside to shop for groceries, visit family or friends, tour amusement parks or bask at a tropical beach.

Whether you agree or disagree with the politics of shutdowns, lockdowns, re-openings and shipments and allocations of the vaccine, the majority of medical experts still proclaim a few simple rules to protect yourself and those around you from being felled by coronavirus.

Solidly atop the list of precautions: wear a mask whenever you’re out of your residence.

If you don’t have to be anywhere, stay home.

Theories and opinions by politicians, medical experts, the news media and one’s neighbors are rampant. Consider your mask.

We’ve been told to wear a cloth mask that covers our face from nose to chin. It should be made of more than one layer of fabric.

Or wear two masks, some say.

It’s even been suggested we wear three masks at a time. And wash your masks daily.

Wash your hands often and quit touching your face during and after you’ve been out to pick up your groceries or returned from a doctor’s appointment.

Staying fit and flexible is just as important when you’re hanging around the house and not getting out to the gym or the park.

You can walk around your yard to keep your leg strength and push up your heartbeat.

Some simple chair exercises can help. If you’re sitting down, stand up slowly. Now sit down slowly. Repeat this a half dozen times.

While you’re sitting, push your feet hard on the floor. Raise one leg slowly until your foot is sticking straight out. Lower it slowly and push your foot into the floor.

Now do the same with your other foot. Repeat this a half dozen times.

Walk over to the kitchen sink.

Stand back about arms’ length and lean over with your chest against its rim. Now push yourself back up. Do these pushups a half dozen times.

Repeat these sessions a couple or three times during the day.

There is a multitude of simple exercises like these that take little time, require no special equipment and can keep you fit.
