He swears that getting top quality ground beef makes the difference between good and great burgers.

He should know. He’s the owner of Ken’s Meat Market at the corner of Broadway and Lincoln Highway in New Haven and has been dispensing quality ground beef to customers for the past 25 years. “We offer our customers two choices of ground beef,” said Schnelker. “The first is a 90 percent lean meat with 10 percent fat. It costs a little more, but is very healthy. Our second grade is 80 percent lean meat with 20 percent fat. It’s less expensive and if you’re not a health nut, this one makes the juiciest and best-tasting burgers.

“Bulk is the least expensive way to purchase ground beef. Of course that means you have to form your own patties. We do make quarter-pound patties and put them in our freezer for those who want to go straight to the grill and don’t want to get their hands greasy,” he added.

Schnelker said, “Hamburger is really the staple of the American diet. You can use it in so many things. It goes well in everything from meatballs, meatloaf and chili to spaghetti sauce, casseroles, tacos and more. We occasionally get requests for ground turkey breast, which could either be made into turkey burgers or be used for turkey

The New Haven native and graduate of New Haven High School began working for New Haven Locker while in high school. During his 17 years with them he gradually worked his way into meat cutting. Back then they owned the present shop on the corner. They sold it to Tim Didier Meats and Ken bought it from him a couple years later.

His son Kurt began working in the shop while a freshman at NHHS and has been involved in the business for the past 25 years. He holds a degree in psychology from Ball State University, which he feels helps him deal with customers.

“Since May is National Hamburger Month,” Kurt said, “we’ll probably bring back our jalapeno cheddar burger mixture to celebrate the special occasion.”

Sarah Hain: giving back to the community through an unplanned management career %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Sarah Hain is assistant vice president and banking center manager in Huntington for First Merchant’s Bank. As much as she enjoys her work, her career path into management was not planned.

In 2002 she was at home rearing four children, with the youngest four years old, when she decided to get a job.

“When I started as a teller at Wells Fargo (in Decatur), I just wanted to supplement our family income and had no intentions of growing to this position,” Hain, 51, said.

“I found out I enjoyed banking and was always happy to take on more responsibilities as the opportunities presented themselves. It was when I came into the role of service manager at Wells Fargo I realized I wanted to make a career in banking and so I went back to school to get my degree in business management. I am surprised how things turned out, and I am grateful to that manager who gave me a chance and hired me into the banking world 20 years ago.”

From the beginning, she quickly worked her way up to lead teller, service manager, personal banker/business advocate and finally branch manager. In 2015 she left Wells Fargo, when she spent several months tending to her mother who was fighting cancer.

Hain now handles all the duties she once was trained in, and many more.

“I do all of the ‘running the branch’ — making schedules, making sure we are in compliance regarding not only First Merchant’s Bank policy and procedures, but federal policies

and regulations,” Hain said.

“I work with my team, coaching them to reach their goals and giving excellent customer service, etc. I am our small business liaison — it is my job to grow our business accounts and lending and to get out and meet small business owners and make them aware of the products and services we have to offer. I am very actively involved in the community. I sit on the board for JA of Huntington County as the secretary, I am an active member in Rotary, I am a Huntington County Chamber Ambassador and I like to volunteer every chance I can with Habitat for Humanity or whatever other good cause is looking for volunteers in the community.

Hain earned her degree in business management from the University of Phoenix, while her kids ranged in age between 8 and 13 and she was working full time.

Fast forward to today. The Banking Center manager position opened in Huntington at 2845 Guilford St. just when she needed it, she said. She has been there since March 2017.

“I have four beautiful children, two handsome sons-inlaw and two adorable grandchildren. No, I am not biased,” she said with a laugh.

As wide-ranging as her responsibilities are, Hain clearly enjoys her work.

“I believe attitude is everything,” she said. “If I have a good attitude, my team is more likely to have a good attitude.

If my team has a good attitude, they will be more engaged in their jobs, they will learn and grow more, they will be more dependable, they will be more welcoming and helpful with their customers and, in turn,

A little exercise can help you avoid snoring or, if you’re already a snorer, cut down on its effect on you and those around you. You don’t have to get any special equipment or join a gym. These exercises can be done while you’re standing, sitting or lying down. You can do them in the shower, when walking the dog, or while watching television.

Developers of these exercises call them throat sit-ups. They report that patients who face surgery or have been wearing mouth guards to curb snoring have been able to discard the devices or avoid surgery after doing these exercises, which take about five minutes three times a day for six weeks.

The first is a simple tongue press. Push the tip of your tongue firmly behind your upper teeth and drag it tightly back along the roof of your mouth as far as you can. Try saying the five vowels — a,e,i,o,u — at the same time.

While saying the vowel sounds again, suck your entire tongue up against the roof of your mouth.

Now try raising the back of the roof of your mouth and, if you can’t get the vowel sounds, say “aaah.”

Repeat each of these throat sit-ups about 20 times.

You should discuss your situation with your primary care physician, who can recommend therapies or specialists as needed.

With the warm weather and sunshine, Hoosier motorists will also see more large slow-moving farm equipment traveling Indiana’s rural roads and highways. The Indiana State Department of Agriculture, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana State Police

and Hoosier Ag Today want to encourage motorists to slow down, be alert and be patient on rural roadways this spring.

“Our farmers have an enormous job to do, feeding us and the rest of the world,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, secretary of agriculture. “And with that job comes a tremendous responsibility; let’s help our farmers out where we can.

Samsung recently sent me a promotional email offering a $150 e-certificate to buy a Galaxy Z Fold3. It was a substantial investment, but I took a chance.

Samsung didn’t provide the e-certificate and never gave me any information about it. I researched, then finally called Samsung a couple of weeks after I received the phone.

I provided clear copies of the promo and proof of purchase. Everything was clear and concise. The reps first tried to get me to accept a one-time code for a lesser value. Then they made many excuses, including pretending they couldn’t read their own ad, which shows the device as eligible.

After escalating my case, a supervisor blamed me for their technical problems and explained I was eligible for nothing. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. I’ve documented everything.

I want Samsung to fulfill the promise they made in their advertisement. I want a $150 e-certificate.

Samsung advertised the terms, and I accepted and fulfilled my side. Now it’s time for Samsung to meet its obligations. Can you help me? — Kristin Graham, Zephyrhills, Fla. Samsung should have done what it promised, of course.

And what it promised was

this: a $150 credit if you bought one of its pricey Galaxy Z Fold3 phones (current list price $1,549).

I’ve reviewed the offer and the correspondence between you and Samsung. You left out a really important part, though. See that little asterisk at the end of the headline? There are terms and conditions — lots of terms and conditions — on that offer.

If I had to bet, I’d say Samsung was using some obscure condition buried in the fine print as an excuse to deny you the promised certificate.

But if that were true, then Samsung should have told you how, exactly, you failed to meet its elaborate terms.

Instead, it just passed you from one representative to the next.

Here’s how I see it: You took Samsung’s offer at face value, which is what most normal customers would. The modest 10% discount wasn’t too good to be true, so it’s not as if you expect Samsung to give you a free phone or something like that. You were acting in good faith.

If Samsung couldn’t come up with a reason for not honoring the offer, then it should send you the $150 now.

By the way, you kept extensive notes, which helped to support your case. I think you could have appealed your case to one of Samsung’s executives as you climbed the appeals ladder. In Indiana, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020 three vehicles were involved in crashes with farm equipment, which resulted in two deaths.

“During the spring and fall seasons Indiana sees a drastic increase of large farm equipment on our rural roads and highways,” said Doug Carter, Indiana State Police superintendent. “In our strong agricultural state, it is critical that Hoosier motorists know the steps to take when approaching farm equipment on the roadways to ensure we all make it home safely to our families.”

While the term “farm equipment” encompasses a wide range of vehicles, the most common types motorists will encounter during planting season include sprayers, tractors pulling planters or tillage equipment and large trucks hauling agricultural products.

These vehicles are wide, sometimes taking up most of the road, and often travel at speeds no greater than 25 mph.

The following list includes safety tips for motorists approaching large farm equipment: • Farmers will pull over when they are able to let motorists pass, but it may take time for them to get to a safe place to do so.

• Be patient. Farm equipment is wide, sometimes taking up most of the road.

• Be careful when passing.

Do not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone” or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevation structure or tunnel.

• Do not try to pass slowmoving farm equipment on the left without ensuring that the farmer driving is not planning a left turn. It may appear that the driver is pulling over to allow a pass when the farmer is actually preparing to turn. You will drive right into its path, endangering yourself and the farmer.

• Avoid tailgating, as some farm equipment might have to make sudden stops along the road.

• Allow plenty of time to get to a destination, be aware

of alternate routes and avoid distractions.

“Moving farm equipment on the roadways is one of the most dangerous parts of my job,” said Tippecanoe County farmer Brent Bible. “It takes time to find a safe space for me to pull over and allow other motorists to pass safely. Please be considerate when you drive behind farm equipment. Drivers and I have the same goal in mind each time we take a trip on Hoosier roads — to get our work done and make it home safely to our loved ones.”

Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler wants to remind motorists farmers work hard to ensure they are being as safe as possible.

“Hoosier farmers are trying to get to their fields safely and quickly, just like our Hoosier motorists are trying to get to work safely and quickly,” said Kettler. “I want to encourage motorists to be aware during this spring season and know that encountering farm equipment is likely and to slow down when approaching.”

“I swear,” she said, “these are probably the most basic burgers anyone could make. There’s really nothing fancy about them.

“To really make them outstanding, however, there are a few things that must be included.

First, it’s important to purchase freshly ground beef. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it. I never get packaged ground beef or pre-packaged patties. For

our family I buy approximately six pounds and make about 24 patties. We have some big burger appetites.

“Then I add dried minced onions and Lawry’s seasonings to give them that little extra flavor. That’s really all there is. I don’t use any barbecue sauce or anything else.

“By hand I make quarterpound balls (close to the size of a tennis ball) before flattening them into patties. I don’t even use one of those plastic circular forms to shape the burgers. Years of experience tells me the right size and I don’t bother to weigh them either.”

With her favorite spatula in hand, she places the burgers on different sections of the grill depending on who wants his or hers medium well, medium or medium rare. She doesn’t use a timer, but has a cook’s sense of timing that tells her exactly the right moment to remove them. “The final touch is choosing the right bun. I give my family a choice of either kaiser or brioche buns. They add an additional touch of flavor you can’t get with just plain hamburger buns.”

When the burgers are done, the McMichael family lines up to add their own choices of condiments, plus Gouda cheese, beefsteak tomato slices, red onions and leaf lettuce. “I’ll also throw a few hot dogs on the grill,” Judy said.

The New Haven native and graduate of New Haven High School said her parents never grilled out. “Grilling wasn’t a big deal then. We had hamburgers, but they were done in a skillet and served on square white bread. There was no medium or medium rare choice. Everybody got the same and it was usually well done. Ketchup and mustard were the only choices of condiments.

“I began grilling after Steve and I got married in the late 1980s and have been doing it ever since. I occasionally do chicken and steaks on the grill, but unfortunately I tend to overcook them.

I’ll even bundle up and grill burgers in the winter. I’ve got grilling burgers down to a science. Burgers are apparently my thing.”

On May 8 (Mother’s Day) Judy McMichael will probably be flipping burgers at the grill on their patio. “I really enjoy doing it, and if it makes my family happy, then I’m happy.”

We are back in action and can’t wait to see everyone.

Let’s get off the couch, get those joints and muscles moving, socialize and HAVE FUN! Senior Games is what we need to help get back in shape mentally and physically after these past couple years. SO, Let’s DO It! Only $1 per event until May 27 and then $2 per event.

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation’s goal is to promote the benefits of remaining active, physically fit and to encourage adults over the age of 50 to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Over 500 participated in 2019 and despite COVID almost 400 in 2021. Let’s increase that number back up this year! There are 40 mentally or physically challenging events to test your

talents and skills, while enjoying good company and making friends. We have events for everyone. No talent necessary to participate .

Although we have had to still put some activities on hold for this year, we still have plenty of offerings for your participation. We will continue the six new events added last year including: Ax Throwing, Timed Jigsaw Puzzling, Computerized Mind Challenge, Fly Zone - Paper Airplane Flying, Trivia and Ultimate Bingo and added back to the schedule Euchre. A NEW event added for this year is SKEE Ball. These new events along with the 30+ we always offer should provide entertainment for all. We will begin Saturday, June 4 with the Intergenerational Fishing Derby and Family Learn to Play Pickleball. It is a DNR fish free day. Participant TEAMS up with their favorite fishing partner under the age of 50 for a better chance of catching the longest and most fish. Or learn the game of Pickleball with FW Pickleball at Lions Park. Equipment can be provided.

Monday, June 6 is the big kickoff at the Community Center, 233 W. Main with a light breakfast and Mayor Henry formally kicking off the event with the Proclamation, Torch Lighting Ceremony and competing in a “friendly” game against the Parks Director and Participants.

A Health and Wellness Fair will take place June 6, 8:30-

11:30 a.m. for anyone registered or visiting the games. Get all your information you need and questions answered as you visit vendors to see what they offer.

It was 50 years ago —

‘Rockin’ Robin’ originally recorded by Bobby Day Michael Jackson By the early 1970s, Motown’s teenage brother group the Jackson 5 was regularly burning up the $ %RRPHU %ODVW Billboard 7R 7KH 3DVW singles %\ 5$1'$/ and album & +,// charts.

Lead singer Michael Jackson later recalled, “It was (Motown founder) Berry Gordy’s idea that I should do a solo recording, and so I became one of the first people in a Motown group to really step out.”

And did he ever step out!

“Got to Be There” established Jackson’s groundbreaking solo path. But his next offering of a kid-oriented “oldie” brought grumbles from those in the industry who felt the bouncy ditty too “lightweight” for any Motown artist, even 13-yearold Jackson. Young Jackson’s fans heartily embraced the

single release, though, and bought enough copies to rocket it to Number Two on the charts.

When Jackson’s “Rockin’ Robin” was hot, the Jackson 5 issued another blast-fromthe-past winner called “Little Bitty Pretty One.” As it turns out, both “Rockin’ Robin” and “Little Bitty Pretty One” had first been done in the late 1950s by the same little-remembered artist, Bobby Day. Day was a fixture on the Los Angeles R&B scene for years, having first achieved success as the leader of the Hollywood Flames (“BuzzBuzz-Buzz”). Day recorded for Class Records, a small-time label owned by brothers Leon and Otis René. Near the end of 1957, Day cut a minor hit called “Little Bitty Pretty One.” (Fellow L. A. singer Thurston Harris recorded a Top 10 cover version.)

Day’s next release in early 1958 would sell a million copies and become his signature song — and his only real success. Leon René had approached the musician with the idea of Day recording the

tune for the teenage market.

The genesis of “Rockin’ Robin” was a rock ‘n’ roll story of legend. Leon René wrote the song after his wife complained about a bird keeping her awake at night. “She asked me to chase him away so that she could get some sleep,” Leon René explained.

“I told her I couldn’t unless I threw a rock at him. But the next night the bird flew into a tree outside my window and woke me up … and about 2 a.m. every morning thereafter.” (The culprit was actually a mockingbird, by the way, and not a robin.)

Leon René was a university educated, middle-aged musician whose songwriting credits included the classic “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano.” When he decided to turn his nocturnal annoyance into a pop novelty, he started with the term “mockingbird,” which morphed into “rockin’ mockin’ bird” and, finally, “rockin’ robin.” The song proved a godsend to the career of Bobby Day (whose real last name was — coincidentally — Byrd).

Leon René never renewed the copyright and no doubt lost a fortune in royalties when Michael Jackson sold a million copies of “Rockin’ Robin” in 1972.

One of the Best Senior Expo’s in the state will be held in Huntington on the beautiful campus of Huntington University in the Merillat Complex Fieldhouse from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This event is hosted by the Huntington County Council on Aging.

Highlights of the Senior Expo are area businesses and services that are related to the needs of seniors. This is an important event that is dedicated to helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity with the assistance of caring individuals. Senior Expo is open to the public – people of all ages, not exclusively seniors.

A child of seniors, grandchildren, and other relatives, caregivers, and anyone else who is connected to seniors is welcome. This event is also completely FREE!!

Many door prizes will be given away throughout the day. Attendees have an opportunity to win additional prizes through the Expo’s Passport Program sponsored

by Duke Energy. The “passport” document given to attendees at the entrance, lists every exhibitor booth. Visitors take their passports to the booths and the exhibitors will stamp their corresponding space on the document. Avidly preparing for the fifth season %\ 9,1&( /$%$5%(5$ )HDWXUH :ULWHU For some sports enthusiasts there’s a season that precedes winter, spring, summer and fall. It’s called the golf season.

Tony Rahrig began preparing for this year’s season last fall when he put his clubs away. Unlike many golfers, Rahrig looks over his equipment after the season ends, checking the condition of his nine-year-old clubs and considering whether it’s time to purchase new grips before this golf season.

He also inspects his shoes and gloves and cleans out the golf bag, making any replacements before storing the equipment in his basement until now when he’s ready to hit the links again.

“I’m anxious for the golf season to begin,” he said, “but I don’t kid myself. I’m just a duffer!” He does, however, enjoy the game and tries to play one or two times a week since retiring nine years ago from a supervisory position locally with the Social Security Administration for 35 years. Often, he plays alone and just enjoys being on a course, appreciating the unique beauty of each golf club in the Fort

Wayne area.

“I enjoy Chestnut Hills and often play it with a couple of friends,” said Rahrig. “We also play many other courses, including Foster Park, but my favorite is Brookwood Golf Club,” he added.

As for getting ready to begin the sport, he says he’s been trying to strengthen his legs and hips with some exercises, being conscious of the condition of his knees following artificial replacements a few years ago. He’s also been losing some weight and hit a bucket of balls.

“If I can shoot bogey on a course, I’m happy,” he said. He kind of looks at it as himself against the course, especially when he plays alone. “I try to have a good game,” he indicated, but he’s not particularly upset if he doesn’t play well. Golf doesn’t spoil a good walk, as Mark Twain said, but enhances it. This season, since his knees are better, he may walk a course a few times instead of renting a cart.

For 25 years, Rahrig played slow-pitch softball. He began playing golf in his late 20s and early 30s, he related. But while he and his wife, Patricia, were raising their two children he didn’t spend

much “free time” on a golf course.

His wife did take some golf lessons but decided the sport was not for her. Their son, Ryan, recently moved from Florida to the Indianapolis area, so Tony is looking forward to perhaps playing a round or two with him. They played together previously and both really enjoyed it.

Tony has not played golf with their daughter, Allison, who lives in Austin, Texas. Instead, the Rahrigs traveled to visit her for a week this spring and spent some enjoyable time with their grandchildren, four-year-old Sophia, 11-month-old Luca, and son-inlaw, Steve.

Even though Tony enjoys playing golf, he’s not a big fan of watching it on television. He is, however, an avid follower of Ohio State football and basketball as well as Indiana University basketball. He also tries to view St. Louis Cardinals baseball games whenever he can and enjoys attending some Tin Caps games.

“But sometimes,” he quipped, “I get desperate. I even watched a lacrosse game recently when there was nothing else to view. And who knows,” he added, “maybe I’ll even try playing pickle ball.”

Giving or leaving funds directly to a disabled individual may cause a disruption of the benefits on which your loved one relies.

Two of the most common benefits programs, Social Security SSI and Medicaid, have a resource limit of $2,000. Benefits may be disrupted or lost when assets exceed $2,000. Assets owned by a Special Needs Trust (also known as a Supplemental Needs Trust or an SNT) established by a “third party” (anyone other than the disabled individual or an agent or guardian acting on their behalf) are not counted as part of the $2,000 resource limit so benefits will not be disrupted if gifts are made to the SNT instead of the disabled individual. Additionally, the terms of the SNT ensure the assets of the trust are used to support your loved

one for their lifetime, and any assets remaining in the trust at the disabled individual’s death pass to those individuals or causes that are important to you.

While each situation must be treated uniquely, a SNT can be a useful tool for anyone who wants to make gifts to a disabled individual whether during your lifetime and as part of your estate.

Regional Burn Center offers prevention and safety tips The Regional Burn Center team at Lutheran Hospital is reminding the community that kitchen safety is key to burn prevention.

The kitchen is one of the most common places a burn will occur from things like grease splatters, scalds and contact burns, and cooking accidents are often the cause of burn injuries in children treated by the Regional Burn Center at Lutheran Hospital.

Safety and prevention in the kitchen is key for all ages, but especially young children. “Small children and cooking just don’t mix well,” said James Kraatz, M.D., surgeon with the Regional Burn Center at Lutheran Hospital. “Almost all childhood cooking injuries result from hot food being pulled off stoves, out of microwaves or off tables by curious and typically unsupervised children, many of whom are just trying to be helpful.”

Dr. Kraatz and the Regional Burn Center team recommend the following kitchen safety tips to avoid burns at all ages: • Never leave children unattended in the kitchen.

• Turn pot or pan handles toward the back or side of the stove to prevent them from coming into contact with you or a child pulling them down.

• Keep hot cups, pans and dishes out of children’s reach and sight, and never hold a child while you’re cooking, drinking or carrying hot liquids or foods.

• Wear short or close-fitting sleeves and keep a pan lid and dry potholders or oven mitts nearby when cooking.

• Use microwave-safe cookware that allows steam to escape when heating food in the microwave. Allow food to rest before removing it and always use potholders or oven mitts.

• Use a pan lid or splash guard when frying to prevent grease splatter, and wipe the stove, oven and exhaust fan clean each time to prevent grease buildup.

• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Turn off the stove or appliance if you need to leave the kitchen.

• If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food,

check it regularly. Remain nearby while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you to check it.

Follow the steps below to clean burn wounds as quickly as possible after an injury occurs and

avoid the risk of infection and scarring and assist with healing: • Wash hands with soap and water.

• Wear medical gloves if available.

• Rinse the wound thoroughly with lukewarm running tap water to help remove dirt, debris and bacteria (kitchen sprayers work well).

• Gently wash wound with mild soap and washcloth.

• Repeat washing until wound is clean.

• Bandage wound, lightly applying antibiotic ointment first to keep bandage from sticking to the wound.

• Watch skin around wound for sensitivity to bandage and warmth or redness from infection.

• Apply clean bandage if current bandage becomes soiled or wet.

• Change bandage at least twice a day.

• Wounds that are deep, large, painful, bleed excessively and/or have large fragments of debris in them should be cleaned and treated by healthcare professionals.

Overcomer Vicky Waterhouse helps others with same struggles %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Vicky Waterhouse knows how important the ministry she volunteers for is. That’s because Waterhouse is helping women through struggles she herself has faced and overcome.

Three and a half years ago, Waterhouse heard about Redemption House Missions and started out helping in small ways. She has since taken a volunteer staff position and works there a few days a week.

Redemption House is a transitional ministry for women that helps them to overcome life’s problems. Overcoming addiction is one of the areas the ministry addresses. There are four locations, one of which is a graduate house for those who have gone through the program.

Waterhouse herself was addicted for more than 40 years.

Her conversion to Christianity is what turned her from addiction once and for all.

“I was saved later in life, at age 50,” she said. “Ever since

that happened, I was praying I would be able to help others.”

Executive Director Tomi Cardin said, “Our ministry is a faith-based organization built on Christian principles and supported by more than 50 churches in the area. We’re privately funded. Our organization would not exist without the support of volunteers. They teach, provide transportation, are mentors, and set up events.”

There are volunteer events, some of which are on Saturday, when people will come and fold clothes, stock food and do all sorts of tasks that are needed.

Originally, Waterhouse was a house mom.

Now Waterhouse performs many duties in her role as volunteer staff member. The hours of her shifts extend to when the women come home from their work. They have a full evening of what is a regular routine in many households. They prepare dinner together, have chores and work to create a positive environment.

“I am blessed more by them than they are by me,” Water-

house said. “We cook together.

We play games together.”

Behind every addict is a mother who is broken, a family that is broken, she said. “With treating addiction at Redemption House, if you don’t know Jesus beforehand, you will afterward,” Waterhouse said.

“We try to do everything in our own strength and it is impossible to be saved from addictions without Jesus.”

“These women are phenomenal,” Waterhouse continued.

“It’s never too late. I would like to emphasize ‘To God be the glory,’ for this ministry because it is faith based.”

Her belief about the work Redemption House does is this: “We’re just writing the story out with our fingers that God has already preordained. Buddy Nolan memorial concert to feature Fort Wayne native organist Mark Herman The Embassy Theatre announces a “grande” celebration of the beloved Grande Page pipe organ as Mark Herman is welcomed to the stage to perform a tribute to the late organist extraordinaire, Buddy Nolan. The two-hour concert, which will begin at 3 p.m.

Sunday, May 1, will include a 20-minute intermission.

Featuring favorite tunes from the “Great American Songbook” and other Broadway shows, Mark Herman brings the Grande Page to life while entertaining audiences of all ages. Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Mark Herman has been involved with the Embassy and its unique instrument since he was a young man.

Buddy Nolan, an integral part of the Embassy’s history, was a much-loved organist known for his midnight organ

concerts that would bring crowds of people downtown at midnight to be a part of the audience.

The Embassy is thrilled to have Herman host this event in honor of one of his predecessors. He’s coming back home to support the venue that introduced him to the Grande Page, his first organ.

society? At the same time, they keep reminding everyone loudly about the good old days.

Most people have misconceptions about themselves. Some individuals have more than others.

You might think you’re good at conflict resolution, of helping to bring feuding relatives, coworkers, neighbors or colleagues together.

They may see you as just a meddling, intrusive or bossy interloper who tries to impose your mores and morals on everybody else.

They might have the same picture of you if you see yourself as someone who can really get people to do things, to have fun and get out and enjoy life.

Thinking you’re a problem solver can be tricky. Most folks

study a problem awhile before trying to solve it. Even if you see what you think is a solution and offer it too quickly, you’ll be perceived as someone who jumps to conclusions.

This applies to your perception of being decisive. If you take your time to collect as much data, information and facts as you can before taking any course of action, the people around you will see you as an old wishy-washy fuddy-duddy.

It may be wise to just go along on matters of little impact and to take your own route on issues that affect your method and manner of living. The results can help you get a clearer picture of yourself while not distorting what other people see in you.

Poking through the past: controversial presidents %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There are several presidents students of history should study to understand what made America the dominant global nation.

Today’s young people, for the most part, pay little attention to history and take for granted America’s position in the world.

It was no accident how we got here. Along the way there was a lot of kicking and screaming, name calling and even threats of “impeachment.” The nation’s White House has been occupied by some rather controversial figures.

While the 45th White House occupant, President Donald Trump, was an easy “love him or hate him,” he wasn’t much different than President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, the turn of the 20th century president who found himself in the Oval Office after the assassination of President William McKinley.

Roosevelt, a Republican, believed in a strong Navy. He had the Navy’s Great White Fleet circle the globe to demonstrate our nation’s growing power. T.R. established his Big Stick foreign policy — “Walk softly but carry a big stick.”

He oversaw the historic and controversial building of the Panama Canal that connected the Atlantic to the Pacific and cut east-west sea travel time in half.

T.R. was shunted into the vice presidency by the Republicans to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been such a thorn to old-guard GOP politicians, they wanted to put him where they thought he couldn’t do any harm.

It backfired. Once in the presidency, T.R. created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms. Among other monikers, he became known as the Trust Buster.

Franklin D. Roosevelt has been called America’s greatest president. He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s Great Depression into five years of World War II. Dozens of books have been written about FDR, making his presidency the pivotal time of the 20th century. Many of his policies and actions, such as Social Security, were challenged in the courts and remain a subject of controversy. But, to date, no one has returned their monthly checks.

Arguably, one of our best chief executives was Harry S. Truman.

During the 20th century, he was the only high school graduate to become president. Known among detractors as “His Accidency,” Truman became president in 1945, when Roosevelt died a few weeks into his fourth term.

As vice president, Truman wasn’t told about the $2 billion atomic bomb project until he took over the presidency. Five months later, he made the decision to drop two bombs on Japan. It remains one of history’s most crucial, and controversial, decisions.

The Cold War began with Truman and lasted for more than 40 years until President Reagan caused the Soviet Union to collapse trying to keep up militarily.

Staunchly anti-Communist, Reagan dedicated himself to ending

the Cold War. Richard Nixon was great on foreign affairs, but dishonest domestically.

If you supported and defended, or were upset, confused, baffled and dismayed with former President Trump, you might try spending a few hours studying President Andrew Jackson, arguably our most controversial of presidents.

During the War of 1812, Jackson led a force of inexperienced volunteers against overwhelming British forces to win the Battle of New Orleans. He had at least two duels during his tumultuous life and was the only president to serve in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, a title he gave himself, was committed to representing and protecting the Common Man, a banner to be carried by several future chief executives. As president between 1829 and 1837, Jackson might have been the closest we’ve had to a dictator.

Jackson changed history by setting the executive branch on an equal footing with Congress by assuming the ability to shape law and government policies.

He believed the presidency should have broad authority and was widely criticized for expanding its power. Like others, he was known for rewarding his supporters with government jobs. The threat of his impeachment kept clouding over the Capitol.

During his watch, both the economy and the Native American population suffered. He was responsible for moving the Native Americans from their traditional homelands in the East to the Oklahoma territory. This movement became known as the Trail of Tears.

The placement of Jackson on the $20 bill is ironic. He vehemently opposed paper money while attempting to destroy the National Bank.

Apparently, Mary Ellen

inherited this volume from her mother. First published in 1931, this was the 1936 release, with 800 pages and hundreds of recipes. It’s actually a collector’s item. I skimmed the pages and was disappointed to discover there were no photos showing what it looks like when steps are followed properly. Does “The Joy of Sex” have photos like that? No clue.

When Irma finished writing “The Joy of Cooking,” her husband, Edgar, had an idea.

He told Irma that if she made every dish he would taste them all, but she had to cook them in alphabetical order, as listed in the index. This was the perfect publicity stunt, he thought, but it was doomed to ultimately fail before the very last meal. Edgar, you see, was allergic to zucchini.

A hoodie wraps you up snugly, too.

There’s no assurance you’ll have access to a headset, so you might want to plan your own entertainment with movies or games on a laptop. Your own headset can also block out annoying sounds, such as a grumbling jet engine just outside the window or a crying baby in the seat behind you.

Packing small, easy-to-get-to, non-sticky snacks will make the jaunt more palatable while easing your hunger pangs.

If you can’t afford flying first class, you might check on the price of an upgrade to a seat with extra legroom.

World War II, 1943 —

The Navy Midshipmen and Notre Dame %\ '5 *5(* /$:621 3DVWRU 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU To this historical writer, the life of Midshipmen Kenneth A. Warren is a mystery after the Navy and Notre Dame and World War II. Warren was in “The Third Midshipmen’s Class at Notre Dame” back in the summer and fall of 1943 with dozens of Navy men. It should be noted that the Navy played a great part in saving Notre Dame from financial ruin during WWII. Prospective male students and civilians were either drafted or enlisted into military service and therefore little or no tuition flowed into Notre Dame during the war years.

How the Navy and Notre Dame entered into this vital partnership is unknown at this time.

In 1943, Kenneth was a Fort Wayne resident who lived with his family, it is assumed, at 1225 Maple Ave. Before entering Midshipmen’s school, he was already a graduate of the University of Michigan, class of ’43, earlier that year.

On entering this Navy program, Kenneth and the other men would undergo highly rigorous training that lead to an officer’s commission at September’s graduation. That stressful training involved navigation, ordinance, seamenship, damage control and more. Luckily there was time for dances and social activities for relaxation.

Recorded in the “Capstan” yearbook of September 1943 is the following: “On the thirty-first day of May … Nineteen hundred and forty-three, observant citizens … of South Bend, Indiana, may have noticed open trucks, crammed to the bursting point with the flower of young-manhood, steaming at standard speed towards the verdant campus of the University of Notre Dame.”

“Class Number Three was reporting for duty.” And here they sat on the beautiful green lawn of Notre Dame’s campus; “the future officers … wearied by long train trips from Florida, from California, from North Dakota and South Carolina.” The men were only on the grass for a few minutes when they were called to attention by an officer.

7TLMZ )UMZQKIV[ 5WV\P Cost of chronic disease in retirement highest for women and people of color The National Council on Aging, the national voice for every person’s right to age well, has found the economic burden of chronic disease in the United States falls more heavily on women and people of color aged 60 and over, who also have the lowest incomes and other assets to afford it, according to a new analysis released today. The research was done in collaboration with the LeadingAge LTSS Center at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

“Health and economic security are completely intertwined,” said Ramsey Alwin, NCOA president and CEO. “A person’s health impacts their wealth and vice versa, especially as we age. As in many other areas of our society, the heaviest burden of chronic disease falls on those older adults who can least afford it — namely, women and people of color. Our country must do better to address these deep inequities.”

The two research papers, titled Chronic Inequities, found the costliest chronic diseases for older adults in treatment and lost wages are Alzheimer’s/ dementia, $48,701 per person per year; cancer, $30,028; and diabetes, $20,137.

While diabetes, cancer and hypertension are the costliest chronic diseases across all Americans aged 60 and over when factoring in both treatment and lost wages, there are variations by race/ethnicity.

For whites, cancer tops the list at $252.1 billion yearly.

For blacks, diabetes and hypertension are nearly tied at $35.4 billion and $35.3 billion yearly, respectively.

For Hispanics/Latinos, diabetes is the costliest at $40.9 billion yearly.

The analysis examined data from the 2018 wave of the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study for those aged

The authors identified those who lost wages due to chronic disease and divided this subgroup into quartiles with various numbers of chronic diseases to see which groups are at higher risk of losing income due to chronic disease. Among those findings: • The people with the highest cost burden because of lost wages (exceeding $25,000) were in the worst overall health with a staggering 69.9% reporting fair/

poor health as well five or more chronic diseases.

• Older women make up two-thirds of those in the top 25% of the population for highest yearly burden when both treatment costs and lost wages are combined. At the same time, they also have the lowest household incomes and the highest out-of-pocket medical expenses.

• Older blacks and Hispanics/Latinos who experienced the highest lost wages due to chronic disease have one-third

the income of older whites.

“Our analysis also found that poverty among older people of color with chronic diseases ranges from seven to 16 times higher than whites,” said Marc Cohen, Ph.D., co-director of LeadingAge, and co-author of the research. “These disparities are shocking and require the serious attention of policymakers.”

The means, should you or your spouse become debilitated and have to move into a senior care facility, you have to repay the loan — which, in most cases, means you won’t have enough money to afford the senior care living.

A more financially sound and manageable plan is to arrange a home equity loan — again, only if you need the money. Augmenting your monthly living income is a sound reason. Talk with your financial advisor and do the arithmetic to make sure you borrow enough to make the payments on the loan, known as servicing the loan out of the loan.

Or you can arrange for a line of credit to be tapped into only if a cash crunch hits.

If interest rates drop a good chunk lower than your current

rate, you might consider refinancing.

Some financial gurus suggest you go for the longest rate, which lowers the monthly payments you have to make. Then, some of them say, you can make a 13th payment every year. This plan calls for making an extra principle-only payment each year, which cuts down both the life of the mortgage and amount of debt you repay.

Compare interest rates. If the percentage between a 30-year mortgage and a 15-year loan is miniscule, take advantage of the longer-term financing. And don’t worry about making extra payments to shorten its life.

Make sure, however, there is no prepayment penalty on any type of loan you obtain.

Many oldsters attracted to each other who consider sharing the same roof without walking up the aisle to the altar say they don’t want to repeat a bad marriage experience, but the biggest reason older couples shun marriage is financial.

It can be as simple and straightforward as not wanting to lose existing government and employee retirement income and health benefits. For example, remarriage can cost you Social Security income you may be entitled to from your previous marriage or from a divorce settlement.

Remarrying could mean the end of any alimony you’re receiving.

Before signing a marriage certificate, seniors should do some arithmetic.

Marriage also affects the amounts of taxes you’re required to pay.

Matters get trickier when children are involved. Careful estate planning is necessary to make sure your assets are left to your children and not funneled off by your new partner.

A written living-together agreement is crucial for seniors who have substantial property and assets and make joint purchases.

Along with a written agreement spelling out legal and financial arrangements regarding money, property and home ownership, seniors should prepare estate planning documents such as a will and health care directive.

Seniors planning to live together, with or without marriage vows, should get their own attorney and tax professional to go over the pros and cons of marriage in their particular circumstances.

Costa Rican tourist attraction discourages tourists %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV The last 18 miles of the road leading to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica takes more than 1½ hours to navigate because it is full of ruts and potholes by design.

The locals don’t repair it because that would make it too easy for tourists to visit.

That may not sound hospitable, but it illustrates the emphasis Costa Ricans place on conservation. But that Cloud Forest, while an ecological marvel worth saving, is really worth seeing.

So what exactly is a cloud forest? It is the rare kind of rain forest where plants actually grow on top of trees.

The nontechnical explanation is plenty of clouds and rain result in every inch of the trees being covered by growing green

things called epiphytes. Half of all the vegetation in this forest lives on the tops of trees, creating a sea of emerald and jade and olive and lime under an unrelenting and opaque canopy.

Among the many bits of color hidden in all this greenery is the resplendent quetzal, a large, brightly multi-colored bird that is as elusive as the yeti in the Himalayas.

Traversing a series of hanging bridges gave us a bird’seye view of the forest very different than that from the ground. And ziplining over the treetops added an adrenaline rush that topped our environmental appreciation. A stop at a hummingbird sanctuary where hundreds of the colorful little guys flapped their wings with impossible-to-measure speed kept us entranced trying to capture their images on camera.

Martha Campbell, the daughter of one of the original Quaker settlers of Monteverde in 1951, provided some historical context to the Cloud Forest community that survived its beginning without plumbing, electricity and phone by cattle ranching. They eventually turned their efforts to conservation and an expanded tourism trade.

She bemoans the large influx of tourists of the past two decades, wishing for less development since tourism has meant “more job opportunities, but also more cars, maybe more crime and I just miss the simple life we used to have.”

This enormously rich ecosystem supports 7% of the world’s plant and animal diversity in only 0.1% of the earth’s surface.

It was only one of several rain and tropical forests, as well as beaches, villages and farms, we

visited during our 12-day Costa Rican adventure.

We also got to learn about the people, explore local markets and towns, and participate in cultural exchanges. The rides from place to place could be long but were never boring.

At a stop for lunch, we were treated to an unexpected exhibition of resident showhorses belonging to the restaurant owner. A bathroom break was capped by a surprise demonstration of sugar cane extraction in an old mill. Mixing the sugar sample with local rum made the experience more memorable.

Add to that a photo op of a volcano in which our eagleeyed leader spotted a sloth in a nearby tree and a random opportunity to milk a cow at a local farm. And the time in our Overseas Adventure Travel tour bus was filled with

Moving forward — plant-forward that is …

Keto says to count and restrict carbs, but eat meat and cheese. Sorry, there is a place for keto short term, or if you have epilepsy, which it was designed for, but the thought of consuming mostly meat and cheese as a mainstay is artery clogging and hard on the kidneys. Not to mention — where’s the fiber?

Plant-based says count plants. Variety is indeed the spice of life when eating plant-based, plant-forward, plant — whatever you want to call it, if it means your plan for each day is to consume fruits, veggies and whole grains in a variety of ways. Plant diversity keeps your good gut thriving and that is what we need to work toward a healthy life.

Dr. Michael Greger, M.D., has an app called “The Daily Dozen,” which is available to download on your phone.

It is a fabulous reminder of what a healthy day of eating should contain. There are boxes to check off as you eat, such as beans x 3, berries x 1, other fruit x 3, cruciferous vegetables x 1, greens x 2, other vegetables x 2, flaxseed x 1, nuts and seeds x 1, herbs and spices x 1, whole grains x 3, beverages and exercise.

How could you possible fit all that in, you may ask — think about the basics of eating a pound of cooked vegetables and a pound of raw — bingo, combine them into a raw dish and cooked dish. A large salad could contain all the raw, plus flaxseed sprinkled on top, add some fruit and raw greens, stick a few celery sticks in there and beans on top if you choose — you just hit about half your daily dozen.

Optionally, you could cut up raw veggies without having a salad and use a dipping sauce instead. Add some fruit and maybe a whole grain and, bam, you have lunch.

The pound of cooked is just never a problem for me.

I combine about 10 different veggies and water sauté them, adding kale or any green at the end and make enough for several days at a time. It is my breakfast nearly every day. It’s a strange thing to look forward to, but I do.

Anything you do towards your health today is good — walk, drink water, go meatless today, have 10 different vegetables, eat three fruits – just do something healthy instead of damaging. Just a little can do so much.

I found this recipe at just the right time because my husband and I each bought a package of the large portobello mushrooms. I modified the recipe to this: Mushroom Lovers’ Pie 1 pound portobello mushrooms chopped (or cremini) 1 can cream of mushroom soup 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons finely chopped rosemary Cook down the mushrooms until tender and liquid is evaporated. Remove from heat and stir in soup,

The media mogul behind the scenes %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV The name of William Fox can be seen everywhere around the globe, but few people have ever heard or read anything about him.

Besides the Fox news network that includes Fox News, Fox Network, Fox Business and Fox Sports, he’s legacy includes 20th Century Fox films.

His name wasn’t even Fox. He was born Wilhem Fuchs in Tolcsva, Hungary, on Jan 1, 1879, and the name was changed after his family immigrated to New York when he was 9 months old. As a youth, Fox sold candy in Central Park, worked as a newsboy on the streets of New York and worked in the fur and garment industry.

In 1900, Fox purchased his first nickelodeon, a coin-operated machine showing early short films, the forerunner of what would soon be put on a theater’s big screen. Always more of an entrepreneur than a showman, Fox concentrated on acquiring and building some of the nation’s major movie theaters and purchased film prints from major movie companies.

In 1915, he formed the Fox

Film Corp. The company’s first film studio was in Fort Lee, N.J., and he began raking in millions of dollars through movies that featured Fox Film’s first breakout star, Theda Bara, who became renowned as “The Vamp” after her performance in “A Fool There Was.” In 1925, Fox purchased the U.S. rights to Tri-Ergon, a sound-on-film system, with which he created Fox Movietone News that became the film news standard.

Competing sound-on-disc technologies, such as the Warner Bros. Vitaphone, became obsolete. From 1928 to 1964, his was one of the major theater newsreel series in the U.S., along with “The March of Time” (1935-1951) and “Universal Newsreel” (1929-1967).

Despite his film studio being moved to Hollywood, Fox opted to remain in New York where he was more familiar with financiers than with either his movie makers or actors. Prominent Fox Film Corp. Oscarwinning actress Janet Gaynor once acknowledged she barely knew William Fox, stating, “I only met him to say ‘How do you do?’”

Following the 1927 death of Marcus Loew, who was head of

:LOOLDP )R[ rival Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Fox saw an opportunity to expand his empire, so in 1929 he bought the MGM holdings from the Loew family. MGM studio bosses Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg were outraged because, despite their high management position at MGM, they were not shareholders and had no corporate control. However, Mayer used his strong political connections to persuade the U.S. Justice Department to sue Fox for violating federal antitrust laws.

In mid-1929, Fox was badly hurt in an automobile accident and, by the time he recovered, the stock market crash that

October wiped out nearly all of his fortune, ending any chance of the Loews-Fox merger going through even if the Justice Department had approved it.

The next year, Fox lost control of his organization and, in 1935, Fox Film Corp. merged with 20th Century Pictures, becoming 20th Century Fox. He never had any involvement with the newly formed film studio that famously bears his name.

During a bankruptcy hearing in 1936, Fox attempted to bribe Judge John Warren Davis and committed perjury.

Fox served a five-month sentence on charges of conspir-

ing to obstruct justice and defraud the U.S. government in connection with his bankruptcy.

His death in 1952 at the age of 73 went unnoticed by the film industry. No one from Hollywood attended his funeral. His remains were interred at Salem Fields Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Today, his name can be seen everywhere in the television news, entertainment and sports networks as a result of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.’s 1986 purchase of 20th Century-Fox and his decision to retain the Fox brand name for the news organization.

The moon and beyond: focus of Armstrong Museum July 20 every year is the celebration of the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission and Neal Armstrong’s *5($7 “one small (6&$3(6 step for 7H[W $QG 3KRWRV man, one %\ 52' .,1* giant leap for mankind.”

To bring the enormity of that accomplishment into focus, plan a trip to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. The museum traces the event from takeoff at Cape Canaveral, Fla., to landing on the moon and returning to earth. In addition, here’s where visitors can get up close and personal with spacesuits, space capsules and a lunar sample (moon rock).

On that momentous day Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin undocked from Columbia (command ship) in lunar orbit and descended in the lunar module Eagle to the Sea of Tranquility. Six hours later, Armstrong became the first human to make a footprint on the surface of the moon.

The museum, which is located just off Interstate 75, is quickly recognizable.

A large 56-foot white dome resembling the moon appears to be rising from behind the building. Inside the “moon” is the Astro Theater where the

movie chronicling the Eagle’s dramatic descent to the lunar surface is shown.

Before entering the museum, check out the bright red and white experimental F5D Skylancer, which Armstrong flew as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Only four were produced.

Also on display outside is the Aeronca Champion, the plane in which Wapakoneta’s favorite son learned to fly. He got his license at age 16 right there in that little Ohio town.

Also outside are replicas of a Gemini spacecraft and an Apollo capsule.

Just three years after Armstrong climbed out of the Eagle landing craft and stepped on the moon, the museum was opened (July 20, 1972) and began taking visitors on a journey through aerospace history.

Time lines document the progression of the space program and hands-on exhibits allow visitors to practice landing the lunar module and space shuttle or docking the Gemini capsule, just as Armstrong did in 1966.

In addition, visitors can maneuver the 1:4 scale model of the Martian rover. In the Infinity Room they can get the feel of walking through space surrounded by an endless sea of stars. Included in the many one-of-a-kind artifacts are the Gemini VIII spacecraft and Armstrong’s Gemini and Apollo spacesuits.

Travel is on a lot of people’s minds as they check the list of places they want to head for after all COVID-19 pandemic mandates, shutdowns, regulations, border closings, country codes and all else is normalized to some extent.

There’s no assurance what the new normal will be, but it’s a sure thing people are going to keep on traveling.

Airline companies have learned already that their business travel segment has been cut severely because modern technology allows employees to work from home and communicate with colleagues, contact clients and attend management and sale meetings via computer, thus replacing the need to commute.

Several travel gurus feel the airlines have made some permanent changes to accommodate what they expect to be a healthy rebound in tourism travel, especially domestically, within the next few months as border closures are expected to be replaced by vaccine requirements as restrictions are being lifted

throughout Asia and Europe.

Despite expecting a strong release of pent-up demand, travel experts tell us we shouldn’t expect any bargains.

There have, however, been some changes, hopefully permanent ones, that will benefit fliers.

For one thing, the airlines are allowing fee-free flexible bookings on practically all tickets, except basic economy. This eliminates any fee being charged if you need to change your flight.

If you want a flexible fare, avoid the cheapest tickets.

The difference in cost between these bottom round-trip fares and that of a main cabin ticket can be as low of $20 or $30, while the cost of changing flights with a basic economy ticket can be as high as $200. The higher priced fare also includes other amenities, such as seat selection.

If you’ve already had a flight cancelled because of the pandemic, you may have a voucher or accumulated credit miles to apply to travel plans. But read the fine print to see whether you have to make your booking during a certain time or if there’s a time limit when that flight must be taken.

Armstrong graduated from Blume High School in 1947. At Purdue University he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering. An engineering classroom building is named in his honor and a statue of him rests near the entrance.

During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions, returned to college after service and later joined the National Aeronautics and Space Committee, which later became NASA. During that period he was an engineer and a test pilot flying the X-15, which reached speeds of 4,000 mile per hour.

Four young stars, one clean old man When rock ‘n’ roll emerged in the mid-50s, movie studios began rush releasing lowbudget black and white $ %RRPHU %ODVW films about 7R 7KH 3DVW the phe%\ 5$1'$/ nomenon. & +,// Hollywood executives had dismissed the music as an insipid teenage craze and wanted to exploit it before it died as quickly as had the Davy Crockett coonskin cap fad.

Everything changed, though, with “A Hard Day’s Night.”

United Artists offered the usual paltry budget of $500,000 for the film and a tight deadline for movie director Richard Lester. In this case, though, the old rock-flick formula was tossed and replaced as a mockumentary based on two days in the Beatles’ frantic world.

Part of the movie’s charm is that “A Hard Day’s Night” never took itself too seriously. The Beatles may have dressed alike, but their individual personalities always shone through as each musician proved to be a natural before Lester’s cameras.

(Earlier, in clubs in Hamburg, Germany, the Beatles had worked hard to create a funfilled stage routine in order to mollify often rowdy drunks.)

The Fab Four, as the media called them, stayed true to life in their film debut. John Lennon played himself as a goodnatured cynic; Paul McCartney, a friendly, urbane schmoozer; quiet guy George Harrison, the philosophical perfectionist; and lovable Ringo Starr everybody’s favorite sad sack guy.

In “A Hard Day’s Night,” interviewers are depicted as inane drones caught off guard by

the Beatles’ cheekiness. When Lennon is asked, “How did you find America?” he smirks and answers, “Turned left at Greenland.” So busy are the superstar Liverpudlians that they are able to enjoy some childlike romping only when they slip away from their manager and cavort like schoolkids in an empty park.

One relentless demand from the record business “suits” was that the Beatles create commercial pop tunes as fast as possible. The group (mainly Lennon and McCartney) worked well under pressure, and some of their finest quickly created works became tracks on the critically acclaimed soundtrack album. The movie culminates with the Beatles performing on television, lip-synching many of their earlier hits (although not “I Want to Hold Your Hand”).

Originally titled “Beatlemania,” the later title came about from something an exhausted Starr had said during the filming. “We happened to work all night,” he explained in an interview. “I came up still thinking it was day, I suppose, and I said, ‘It’s been a hard day…’ and I looked around and saw it was dark, so I said, ‘…night.’ So we came to ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’”

Lennon wrote the memorable title track the next day.

Throughout the film, wellknown British actor Wilfrid Brambell portrays Paul’s mischievous (and well-dressed) grandfather. He is constantly referred to as being “clean,” a reference that most American audiences missed. The explanation? Brambell had earlier won UK fame as a slovenly junk dealer on the TV show “Steptoe and Son,” where he was often chided as being a “dirty old man.”

In 1972, Brambell’s show came to America under a title more familiar to us — “Sanford and Son.”

United Way announces resignation United Way of Allen County announced that Matthew Purkey has formally resigned as president and chief executive officer of United Way of Allen County after accepting an opportunity to become vice president of regional operations with The Mission Continues, a national nonprofit that connects military veterans with new missions in underresourced communities.

Matthew has been a great asset to the United Way of Allen County team and a passionate community advocate with whom the organization has surpassed unprecedented milestones. He successfully led the recent community needs assessment and strategic planning process that produced UWAC’s new priorities of educational opportunities, mental health access, food security and housing stability.

Purkey also convened and facilitated United Way of Allen County’s Emergency Relief Fund raising an additional $5million-plus to aid community members and organizations

in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Longtime volunteer and current United Way of Allen County chief financial officer Greg Johnson will assume the position of interim chief executive officer until a permanent replacement is identified. Don Cates, chairman of the board, will lead the nationwide hiring search.

Cates commented, “Matthew, a seasoned nonprofit professional and U.S. Marine Corps veteran himself, has been offered a once-in-a-lifetime role that aligns perfectly with his passion, skill sets, experience, and expertise.

“On behalf of the board, we thank Matthew for his contributions to United Way of Allen County and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Purkey’s last day was April 1.
