%< &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Over the past year the pandemic caused everyone to come up with ways to adapt to the new normal. For the Lake County Parks Photo Club, rather than cancel everything and come to a standstill, the club found ways to pivot and continue its purpose of bringing photographers together, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Prior to the March 2020 shutdowns, the club had been meeting once a month at the visitor center at Deep River

County Park, in addition to a couple group photo shoots during the year.

“The small park building was not a realistic meeting choice once the pandemic hit and, while the April and May meetings were cancelled, the club did not want to call it quits or move online. Where to instead? Outside. The club members started meeting monthly outside at the picnic shelters at Deep River County Park,” said Dyan Leto, historic building manager with Deep River County Park.

“Not only was the move outside a change of the physical

space, but it also forced some changes to the way meetings were run. Rather than use a projector to share and display images, photos now had to be printed in advance to share with the group. Meeting times were now dictated by when the sun would set. And when the weather changed and meeting outdoors became too cold, a new location had to be found once again. This time, the club moved indoors to the banquet hall at Turkey Creek Golf Course. Another Lake County Park facility, this space had room for up to Continued on page 5

Meals on Wheels launches new volunteer campaign Meals on Wheels has a new volunteer campaign, “Spring into Action.”

Volunteers can “Swing into Spring” by delivering meals to those in the community. By serving others, it takes only an hour and a half of your time as little as twice a month.

The increased number of clients and meals being served means Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana urgently needs volunteer meal delivery drivers throughout Lake and Porter counties, with the most urgent need in Hammond, Gary, Miller, Hobart, Lake Station, Merrillville, Portage and Lowell.

Additionally, volunteer van drivers are immediately needed to deliver food containers to designated locations. All routes originate at the Merrillville facility.

Volunteers are the heart of Meals on Wheels. They establish a relationship with each client. Volunteers are trained to deliver a personal connection and wellness check with every single meal. Turn compassion into action and become part of the Meals on Wheels team.

Disability no deterrent to ‘Goody Lady’ gleaning for others %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Kathy Conn considers herself a gleaner. Biblically speaking, gleaning can be found throughout the Book of Ruth.

To prevent starvation, Ruth, a Moabite, gleaned from the fields of Boaz.

Conn, whose grandmother was named Ruth, hails from Valparaiso, not Moab, and a physical disability prevents her from tilling any fields.

Gleaners of old harvested areas of fields that farmers typically left for the poor. Today’s gleaners rescue food from restaurants, farms, grocery stores, wholesale food centers and, in Conn’s case, anyone with something good to donate.

“It drives me crazy when I see people wasting or throwing away food,” said Conn.

Nicknamed the “Goody Lady” for her donations, Conn wants to dispel the notion that Porter County has no poor. A former

caseworker for Child Protective Services, she has seen poverty firsthand. An automobile accident in 2013 left her with a permanent disability, including loss of memory and a broken spine. However, that’s when she expanded her pickup of day-old bread for animals to include other food, clothing and other necessities to churches, food pantries, shelters, trailer parks, nonprofits and even police and fire departments.

Today, Conn has a folder with an extensive listing of the places she’s helped. Conn does not take total credit for dropping off goodies. Her disability makes it impossible for her to lift items, so she needs help with distributions.

“If I bring it, they have to unload it,” she said.

For Conn, this distribution is therapy for her. It has taken her as far as Michigan City and Plymouth.

“People did not believe Porter County had poor people,” she said. “Then COVID hit and everybody started seeing [poverty]. People tell me they’re hungry and I feed them.”

Some of those who scoffed at Conn’s early efforts are now recipients of the donated food or clothing. She recalled helping one family whose daughter told

Conn has certain days for picking up and delivering donations, but her volunteer efforts keep her busy all week long.

People know about Conn’s efforts and the clunker she used to drive. NeighborhoodLink, a Porter County-based service organization, surprised Conn in February with a used but more road-worthy Acura. Today, that SUV is filled from front to back with clothing, food and empty boxes for picking up more food.

Conn today is reliving her past as a student at Portage High School, where she went shopping for home economics classes.

Not seeing herself as a religious person, Conn considers herself animistic, meaning she believes everything has a soul.

Her big thing is giving.

“Christmas should be every day. We should be giving every day,” Conn said. “You don’t know what God has in store for you.”

Caught a dishonest sales letter %\ :22'52: :,/&2; 6HQLRU &DUH ,QVXUDQFH 6YFV A client and friend of mine from Schererville brings me the sales pitch letters that she gets from other insurance agencies or companies. I review them and explain them to her. All that she was sent have been “slick” sales pitch letters.

But one really bothered me because I felt it was just dishonest and might trouble some

senior citizens. In bold letters near the top, the letter stated “Medicare coverage review — call immediately.”

At the bottom of the page, it stated, “Please turn over for disclaimer information.” On the other side of the paper, it stated, “This letter is an advertisement.”

An average senior citizen might become alarmed at the phrase “Medicare coverage review — call immediately.”

It suggests that some drastic change has happened in the Medicare system. It is phrased to alarm and startle a senior into the action of calling the number. But is the phone number really with an insurance agency or is it the phone number of scammers who want to “phish” the startled senior citizen into giving personal information of the senior in order to take money from the senior’s bank account?

The same firm sent two other similarly worded letters. None of the letters, nor the envelopes, showed a return address or the name of a real insurance agent or real insurance company.

Envelopes from a real insurance agent, agency or insurance company have real return addresses with the real name of an agent or agency or company.

I believe that the letters that have no names or addresses should be used as evidence to

shut down the perpetrators.

If you believe that someone is trying to scam you or a senior citizen that you protect, contact the state’s attorney general’s department of consumer protection and make a complaint.

“It was kind of mixed in that some of our club members were high risk and were not able to attend. We had to find a new location for the meetings, but there was a group of us that did meet up on a monthly basis outdoors during that time to take pictures, which is what camera clubs are all about. We are trying to increase our membership and attract more people into our club. We have found the club to be a good way to get to know people, in addition to increasing skills as a photographer.”

However, the club participated in more outdoor photo shoots in 2020 than ever before. Christmas parties were replaced with a Christmas photo shoot of Deep River’s holiday decorations.

Three ways to fight scammers who target your benefits %\ '$1,(/ 6800(5 6RFLDO 6HFXULW\ 3XEOLF $IIDLUV 6SHFLDOLVW Scammers are always finding new ways to steal your money and personal information by exploiting your fears. The most effective way to defeat them is to know how to identify scams and to ignore suspicious calls and emails.

One common tactic scammers use is posing as federal agents and other law enforcement. They may claim your Social Security number is linked to a crime. They may even threaten to arrest you if you do not comply with their instructions. Here are three things you can do: • Hang up right away or do not reply to the email.

• Never give personal information, money or retail gift cards.

• Report the scam at oig. ssa.gov immediately. This is Social Security’s law enforcement team at the Office of the Inspector General.

You should continue to remain vigilant of phone calls when someone says there’s a problem with your Social Security number or your benefits.

If you owe money to Social Security, we will mail you a letter explaining your rights, payment options and information about appealing.

There are a few ways you can identify a scam call or email.

Remember that we will never: • Threaten you with benefit suspension, arrest or other legal action unless you pay a

fine or fee.

• Promise a benefit increase or other assistance in exchange for payment.

• Require payment by retail gift card, cash, wire transfer, internet currency or prepaid debit card.

• Demand secrecy from you in handling a Social Securityrelated problem.

• Send official letters or reports containing personally identifiable information via email.

If you do not have ongoing business with our agency, it is unlikely we will contact you.

Again, if you get a suspicious call claiming to be from Social Security, you should hang up and report it right away to our Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov.

A cyberspace commandment you should heed is, “Never open any email or text or answer a phone call if you don’t recognize the source.” Even that simple response can open a link for crooks to obtain enough information to steal your identity or clean out your bank account.

If you decide to talk to a caller, do so for only a couple of minutes and ask for their number so you can call them back. They’ll likely

hang up on you.

If they do give you a number, don’t call that number.

If they told you they were calling about your credit card, call the number on the back of the card and tell them why you’re calling.

Don’t let any caller browbeat you. No matter how official or threatening they sound, do not give them any personal information. Scammers know this pandemic has made everyone a bit more tired, confused and vulnerable than normal, and pounce especially on seniors.

Another vicious scam is a call or email from someone pretending to be a relative or close friend caught up in a problem far away and in need of bail money to get out of jail or ticket money to get home.

Before even considering contributing, call family members, friends and folks who know the individual to clarify the situation.

Tiptoeing through a long career Tiny Tim is typically remembered as a disposable novelty performer, but he deserves better than being a mere foot%\ 5$1'$/ note in en& +,// tertainment history.

He was born Herbert Butros Khaury in Manhattan in 1932,

the son of immigrants who toiled in the garment industry.

At home, Khaury spent hours mesmerized by his parents’ sublime 78-rpm discs of Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee.

Outside, neighborhood bullies taunted him and at school the mild-mannered misfit ignored classroom subjects to daydream about the girls there.

He took up the ukulele after seeing Arthur Godfrey playing one on television. Shortly thereafter, Khaury set music as a career goal. He left school at

It’s what can cause panic when anyone develops a fever.

If you have a fever (your body temperature rises over 100 degrees Fahrenheit), contact your family doctor. It’s a sign that your body is fighting off an infection caused by some virus or bacteria.

In some cases, a fever can be regarded as an ally in helping your body fight off several types of infections.

Fevers usually last a couple or three days and there are several over-the-counter remedies to lower temperature.

Bacterial infections may call for an antibiotic, but in most cases it’s best to let the fever do its work. Lowering your temperature might inhibit its effectiveness.

Because your body is busy with this battle, you probably feel tired, achy and uncomfortable. You might also have the chills. All this is telling you to stay in bed and let your body repair itself.

An environmental fever (rising body heat caused by heated surroundings) is a different matter.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to heat stroke.

They’re more likely to become dehydrated because their bodies are less sensitive to temperature changes.

Some medications can exacerbate this problem. And some drugs can be the source of a fever. So discuss these concerns with your doctor.

When you do feel a fever, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Eat easy-to-digest food because your body needs to use your energy to help you heal. And get plenty of warm, comfortable rest.

While COVID is raging around the globe, there are several other sources of fevers such as colds, flu, heat exhaustion and joint inflammation.

As with any medical condition or concern, call your doc-

17, grew his hair down to his shoulders (an unusual move at the time), and learned hundreds of old-time songs. Eventually, he found club work as a novelty act in a few local dives, where he strummed his instrument and sang in a quavery but pure falsetto, as well as in a rich, confident male baritone.

This unusual skill allowed him to sing duets with himself.

He adopted a series of stage names, including Judas K. Foxglove and Larry Love, the Singing Canary. In 1963, his manager proposed the Englishsounding title Sir Timothy Timmins. Khaury preferred Tiny Tim, though, after the iconic Charles Dickens character.

Tiny was eventually able to secure better gigs in Greenwich Village. From there, he moved up to a trendy New York club called The Scene, where he formed friendships

with such pre-fame musicians as the Lovin’ Spoonful, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan.

Tiny’s life changed dramatically one night in 1967. Mo Astin, the head of Reprise Records, caught Tiny’s act at The Scene and offered him a recording contract on the spot.

The result was a future Top 10 album, “God Bless Tiny Tim,” which contained his lone hit single of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” The ditty, a laughable anomaly in an era of psychedelia and heavy metal, had been around since 1929, when singer Nick Lucas had recorded a No. 1 hit with it.

1968 became Tiny’s breakout year. That January, most Americans got their first look at Tiny on “Rowan and Martin’s LaughIn,” with the scraggly-haired, beak-nosed, face-powdered entertainer strolling onstage while grinning and blowing kisses. That night, when he

launched into “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” a star was born — although some perplexed viewers probably expected a UFO to drop down and whisk Tiny off to his home galaxy.

His star burned white-hot for a while. Las Vegas beckoned with $50,000-a-week offers and, on Dec. 17, 1969, over 40 million “Tonight” viewers watched Tiny marry 17-yearold “Miss Vicki” (Victoria Budinger) on Johnny Carson’s TV show.

The couple had a daughter, Tulip, before divorcing in 1977. Tiny married two more times and released numerous disparate records that always tanked. He never could find that elusive second big hit.

On Nov. 30, 1996, Tiny Tim suffered a fatal heart attack at age 64, while performing at a small Minneapolis club. He had just finished singing “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.”

Coach prepares grapplers to reach their potential %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU After 25 years of coaching wrestling at Chesterton High School, Chris Joll is retiring in style. His Trojans returned from the state finals with one individual champion, one runner-up, one third place, one fourth, two fifths, one sixth and one eighth place.

Along the way, Chesterton wrestlers scored the fourth highest points in Indiana mat history with 107. Only standing in their way was Evansville Mater Dei, scoring 112 points for state team honors.

“Wrestling is such a demanding sport,” said Joll, who is 57.

“It’s not a ‘kinda do’ sport. You do it or not. I enjoy watching kids reach their potential by working hard. Usually the wrestlers who enjoy the most success work the hardest.”

Having coached briefly at Merrillville and Valparaiso high schools, Joll has been in wrestling for most of his life. A product of Duneland Schools, he wrestled through his years at Wabash College.

Joll teaches anatomy/physiology, zoology, human body systems and chemistry at CHS. His wife, Molly, teaches social studies in

Valparaiso. The couple has two adult daughters.

After coaching for decades, Joll said the biggest challenge has been “convincing kids to get on the mats. It’s hard to get kids from other sports. Wrestling is very hard and revealing. It’s usually your fault you lost.”

Wrestling is about endurance and Joll has stressed conditioning.

“The best moves come from the boy who is in shape,” the retiring coach said. “The winner is usually the kid who can make a move in the third period that his opponent cannot make. Our kids rise to the situation and our conditioning has paid off for us.”

Joll also briefly coached girls’ track at CHS. With help from his athletic wife, Joll focused on long and high jumpers.

For those considering wrestling in high school, Joll recommends “getting in with people with the same goals, someone to hold you accountable. Wrestling is hard to do by yourself.”

Seven seniors on this year’s squad have probably been wrestling since fifth grade, if not earlier, the coach said.

Joll has coached multiple individual state champions at Chesterton, but the best coaching advice came after a loss.

Joll approaches coaching wrestlers scientifically, “so they get to know the logic and reasoning behind what we do. They seem to believe what I tell them

to do and it seems to have been working.”

Several of Joll’s grapplers compete at the collegiate level, including Lucas Davison, who reached the NCAA finals for Northwestern. Joll cited six former Trojans competing on Big Ten mats, including Davison’s

brother, Andrew, at Michigan.

As of mid-March, Joll did not know who his successor was, but he did offer this advice: “Keep it as simple as you possibly can. Always tell the kids the truth and if you tell them something, stick to it. That approach has developed some darned hardworking kids.”

—o— From New York to Chicago and beyond, America was infected with gangsters, bootleggers, bank robbers and murderous criminals.

Before focusing on Fred “Killer” Burke, the main topic of this story, we must establish a brief history of events leading up to the gangster and cop killer, Burke and Berrien County, Mich.

It may have started out as a typical winter day in Chicago, but Feb. 14, 1929, would soon be remembered for one of the darkest events in crime history — the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Chicago became known as “Bloody Chicago” while Berrien County, on the north side of the Indiana state line on Lake Michi-

“Okay, Bob, let’s talk again when the pandemic is over.”

We called our friends John and Jane. “Hi, guys, we have an idea for a fun evening. Let’s all watch ‘The Crown’ on Netflix and make fun of the royal family.”

“Dick, we don’t have Netflix.

But we found a great show on the Food Network, ‘Amy Schumer Learns to Cook.’ ” “We don’t get the Food Network.”

“But surely you have Vudu TV?” “We didn’t want to take a chance. It sounded like a cult. I bet my brother has it.”

We made several other calls, becoming nervous that we were running out of friends we were compatible with. My wife loves old movies but we found very few TCM subscribers. We discovered that the Wideners had satellite TV. They told us it was

unlikely we had many interests in common. I felt like they were dishing us, so that was the end of that relationship.

We tried to find folks who subscribed to Acorn TV and who enjoyed British mysteries as much as we do, but most of our friends have Hulu, which I had wrongly assumed was just travel shows about Hawaii. My sister watches a lot of YouTube TV, a service I thought was limited to cat videos. I called my friend Mikki who said she just has an antenna on top her TV. Too bad. We had been friends for 30 years.

I had an idea. “Mary Ellen, I’m going to create an Excel spreadsheet where people can sign up and find other people who share similar services. This would be a boon to friendships during this time of isolation.”

“I’m very impressed, Dick.”

“So, you like the concept?”

“No, it’s nutty, but I’m impressed you know how to use Excel.”

I logged onto eHarmony and Match.com to see if they even considered viewing options as an important issue in establishing a relationship. I even went on an adult site called Be Naughty, but when I entered my age, I was automatically transferred to Silver Singles.

With the hundreds of personal interests compared on these dating sites, there wasn’t a single question about cable TV or streaming preferences.

Just the same old unimportant inquiries: God-fearing or agnostic? Smoker or nonsmoker?

Permanent or casual relationship? Drinker or abstainer? All fine and good, but where was: Showtime or Epix? STARZ or Cinemax? Chromecast or Xbox?

The bottom line is we are looking for a friendship with another couple who has HBO, Amazon and Netflix. You obviously would need basic cable.

If you don’t have it, have it installed. Hooking up is half the fun.

Two of Capone’s favorite venues were “Little Italy” and the “House of David Amusement Park.” Capone never owned a home in Berrien County, but several of his henchmen did, including “Louis ‘Little New York’ Campagna, Phillip D’Andrea … and Paul ‘The Waiter’ Ricca DeLucia.”

Research reveals that “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was thought to have been arranged by Al Capone and the

way it went down” changed his nickname from that of “the Babe Ruth of American Gangster” into “the country’s first public enemy number one.”

We now focus again on Berrien County where we find that “One gangster wound up in Stevensville, known to his neighbors as ‘Fred Dane…’ ” It was “in December of 1929, police and citizens of Berrien County would learn that his real name was Fred “Killer” Burke,

wanted in Chicago for his leading role in the murder of seven members of the Bugs Moran gang, known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

We continue to learn more about Fred Burke in part two and his role in the murder of a St. Joseph, Mich., city police officer.

‘I Am … I Said’ Neil Diamond’s sixth Top 10 hit Neil Diamond Humor writer Dave Barry once invited the readers of his weekly syndicated newspaper column to vote for the worst pop %\ 5$1'$/ song of all & +,// time. When $ %RRPHU %ODVW over 10,000 7R 7KH 3DVW letters piled up on his Miami office desk, he assembled them into Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs.

“MacArthur Park” took the highest “honor,” but fun-loving Barry offered jabs at several other tunes as well. One was Neil Diamond’s “I Am …

I Said,” with Barry citing one

particular set of odd lyrics: “I am … I said/To no one there/And no one heard at all/ Not even the chair.”

Barry’s gleeful response: “What kind of line is that? Is Neil telling us he’s surprised that the chair didn’t hear him? Maybe he expected the chair to say, ‘Woah, I heard that!’ ” Okay, funny enough. But a closer look at the song reveals some serious surprises.

Diamond, who was born Noah Kaminsky in New York in 1941, took a screen test in 1970 in hopes of playing comedian Lenny Bruce in a forthcoming film. (Dustin Hoffman eventually won the role.) In an interview years later, Diamond described about how he had returned to his Los Angeles Holiday Inn room in a funk because he felt

(correctly) that he had failed the audition.

Sitting alone at a small table with two chairs, he gazed out the window at the world of golden sunshine and palm trees. He was homesick for his native Brooklyn and feared that perhaps he had made a mistake in his recent move to California. (In an earlier minor hit, “Brooklyn Roads,” Diamond waxed nostalgic about gazing out the window of his third-floor childhood apartment.)

Diamond picked up his guitar and within one hour wrote “I Am … I Said,” which would eventually become his sixth Top 10 single since 1966. He would spend the next four months honing the tune to his satisfaction.

Diamond’s label, Uni Records, questioned his line

about the chair, but Diamond insisted that it stay. To him, it represented where a hotel room companion would have sat if there had been one that day. Others have pointed out that Diamond, who is Jewish, may have subconsciously gleaned the chair image from the Passover, which includes Jewish people keeping an empty chair for Elijah, who will eventually announce the coming of the Savior.

Diamond has since admitted that much of the bulk of his song came from time spent in therapy in Los Angeles: “It was consciously an attempt on my part to express

what my dreams were about, what my aspirations were about and what I was about.

And without any question, it came from my sessions with the analyst.”

He has since proclaimed, “(‘I Am … I Said’) was by far the most difficult song I have ever written — and probably the best song I have ever written.”

By the way, Barry was so overwhelmed by the tsunami of hate mail that flooded in from Diamond’s fans that Barry soon wailed in print, “Please stop writing! You have convinced me! Neil Diamond is a music god!”

'HQYHU 2PHOHW Sandwiches This egg sandwich recipe with flavorful Canadian bacon and crunchy bell pepper is a perfect healthy breakfast-for-dinner candidate. For an evening meal, serve with roasted potatoes and a tomato salad. For breakfast, just add a cup of coffee or tea and you’re good to go.

4 servings; Total: 25 mins INGREDIENTS: 4 whole-wheat English muffins, split 4 slices Canadian bacon 1 cup shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese 4 large eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper DIRECTIONS: Step 1 Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler.

Coat a large rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.

Step 2 Place English muffins split-side-up on one side of the baking sheet and place Canadian bacon on the other side. Broil until the bacon is hot and the muffins are toasted, about 2 minutes. Divide cheese among 4 muffin halves. Turn the broiler off and return the baking sheet to the oven to melt the cheese and keep warm.

Step 3 Whisk eggs, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until just starting to brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Spread the vegetables evenly in the pan and pour in the eggs. Reduce heat to medium and cook without stirring, but lifting the edges to let uncooked egg from the middle flow underneath, until the bottom is set, about 2 minutes. Cover and cook until the eggs are fully set, 2 to 4 minutes more.

Step 4 Fold the omelet in half and slide onto a cutting board.

Cut into quarters. Assemble each sandwich with one cheesy muffin half, a slice of bacon, a quarter of the omelet and a remaining muffin half.

Food pantry offers outward sign of service to God’s people %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU It started as a Girl Scout project, offering basic food items to the public. Nearly a decade later, the food pantry at Central Christian Church in Valparaiso provides food, toiletries and paper supplies to several hundred people on a monthly basis.

Two men involved in the pantry are Joel Davis, its coordinator, and the Rev. Tom Manzke, preaching pastor at Central Christian. A small faith community, Central Christian is a sister church to CrossPointe Christian, also in Valparaiso. There Davis is an elder and Manzke is a care minister, reaching out to those in need of visitations, prayers or other needs.

The two men feel blessed through the food pantry.

Without soliciting donations, they have received generous donations, many coming from nonmembers.

“People just drop things off,” Davis said. “I’ll find canned goods donated by the door.”

Since last March, when the pandemic hit, the church has spent $30,000 on pantry items, Manzke said, adding that 300 to 400 people receive assistance. With COVID-19, pantry numbers have grown, the pastor noted.

The Saturday distribution takes place from 3-4 p.m.,

with cars lined up around the church parking lot. Food is given at a distance, as volunteers bring bagged supplies to each vehicle.

As Davis explained, depending on the size of the family, each family receives six plastic bags of canned goods, four paper bags with cereal, pasta and similar foods, four bags with toiletries, and bread or a pastry product.

Central Christian’s food pantry focuses on nonperishables, though hams were available for Easter. For Christmas, which wiped out the pantry, 40 turkeys and 120 pounds of frozen chicken went to families.

“Anyone can come,” Manzke said. “We don’t ask who you are.”

As a ministry, Manzke continued, the food pantry is a “practical way to share the love of Jesus with others. We want to be a blessing to those around us.”

Davis added, “We as Christians are called to serve and this is a very practical way to serve, especially these days with the pandemic.”

A high school cross-country coach, Davis involved his runners in helping the pantry.

Other community service projects involving Central and CrossPointe Christian include a take-home Easter egg hunt kit featuring secular and religious items, a Mother’s Day benefit for The Caring Place, a

When it comes to living their faith, Davis agreed with Manzke: “It means service.

Be a servant. It’s not about feeling good about myself, but serving in Jesus’ name.”

Turning to Scripture, Manzke cites Matthew 16:24: “If a man wishes to come after me [Jesus], he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and begin to follow in my footsteps.”

What’s your why for eating healthy?

Pursue the change. Adopt the mindset that the action has already happened — I am plant-based. Sounds like a mind game, but as many things in life — it is a mindset. If you want an excuse as to why you can’t make changes, there are millions, but if you set your mind to the change, you’re already there.

Often you hear that people need a why in order to make

changes; boy do I have a few for you: • Two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight.

• Fifty percent of U.S. adults have diabetes or are pre-diabetic.

• Every 52 seconds an adult in the U.S. dies from heart disease.

• Fifty-eight percent of the American diet consists of ultraprocessed foods.

• Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke.

• Strokes are the leading cause of serious long-term disability in adults.

This isn’t meant to scare you, but maybe frighten you enough to see that it may be time to implement those changes that you know will improve your health.

There are consequences to eating plant-based and they are good. We’ve talked about how to start improving your eating

choices by eating more plantbased meals; maybe it’s every breakfast or maybe breakfast and lunch (even better), leaving dinner as your only meal where you consume meat, fish and dairy. Or jump right in and say “I am plant-based” for the next week or month. Committed change will change you.

Given the nature of the environment at the time, it was even more important to assure that ritual continued.

One of the more challenging questions we receive in hospice care these days is about another sacred ritual: the funeral.

Families and loved ones feel conflicted that traditional ceremonies can’t be held due to the pandemic; they state they miss that sense of closure or that their loved one wasn’t appropriately honored.

Churches and funeral homes have adjusted as best they can by livestreaming them over social media and teleconferencing, but without the personal contact of friends and family, much is lost. Until we can return to some semblance of normalcy, some families are finding opportunities for new rituals in place of our traditional ceremonies. They may gather in a small group and plant a tree in honor of their

Would working from home work for you? %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A big problem with working from home is that you rarely get paid overtime, despite putting in more hours in your workday than you would in an office.

On the other hand, folks who have spent much of their career laboring in the living room usually find their daily output doesn’t take as long as it used to when they were confined to a cubicle.

While the COVID-19 pandemic

has forced many workers to convert part of their domicile into workspace, it also uncovered the fact that more than three-quarters of the labor force just cannot provide their goods or services from their den.

Nurses, flight attendants and bus drivers are just a few who cannot continue their livelihood in their living room.

Those who can have learned something that many selfsufficient seniors have known for decades. Whether they’re an artisan or accountant, they have

learned to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of self-scheduling and not having to report for duty at a specific time and place five days a week.

Many of today’s seniors developed a second career after doffing the commuter cloak required to get them to work over the years.

And many are looking for ways to remain productive.

As mentioned earlier, studies have shown that a lot of workers at home put in more than eight hours a day. That “overtime” equates in many cases to the

time they would have spent on the road getting to and from the office.

Many folks on the work-fromhome circuit report they miss mixing and mingling with their colleagues. They can take a leaf from the seniors’ book: arrange to meet for lunch or after work on a regular basis to catch up on each other’s news and views.

Self-starting also can be an issue. Longtime work-at-homers have cultivated the discipline of having regular hours, while realizing they may not have to be

squeezed into a nine-to-five box.

You can work for a solid period in the morning and take the rest of the day off. Or you can split your day into before- and after-lunch sessions.

You also may be able to organize your chores in a more manageable fashion. Make your calls in the morning and write reports in the afternoon, for instance.

Defining a work space helps.

History oozes from St. Augustine’s pores Not many American cities can boast a history that goes back 450 years.

It was *5($7 founded in (6&$3(6 1565 and is %\ 52' .,1* hands down the oldest city in the United States. On top of that, it has

the oldest wooden school in the nation, a lighthouse that’s a couple centuries old, a huge fortress made out of broken shells that is the country’s only 17th Century masonry fort still standing and a college whose campus is touted as being the most beautiful in the nation.

In addition to all that, St. Augustine is headquarters to the Golf Hall of Fame, Lightner Museum of eclectic collections all accumulated and displayed in a former hotel, the Fountain of Youth, Ripley’s Believe it or

First, the fort. Castillo de San Marcos, a popular national park, is constructed in the shape of a star with a wide moat around its exterior.

It’s made of coquina, which is a soft limestone made up of broken shells. Doesn’t sound very impressive, but the British found it impenetrable on two occasions. Unlike stone, coquina absorbs the impact of cannon balls and doesn’t crack. Some enemy projectiles even stuck in the walls. Most, however, just

bounced off. After the barrage stopped at the end of the day, the Spaniards crept out under the cover of darkness, retrieved the cannon balls, melted them down to fit their own cannons and fired them back the next day.

The British finally gained control of the fort in 1763 through the Treaty of Paris.

They renamed it St. Mark. The U.S. Army took over in 1825 and named it Fort Marion, but in 1942 the original name was restored to honor its unique Spanish heritage. The best view of the old lighthouse is from the fort battlements.

Alumni of colleges and uni-

versities around the country will no doubt challenge the ‘beautiful campus’ claim of Flagler College. It originally was the 540-room Ponce de Leon Hotel built by the railroad mogul Henry Flagler in the early 1900s as a vacation destination for his rich friends.

As you might expect, he spared no expense, specifying the finest marble and the most exotic woods from around the world.

The dome inside the main entrance is exquisite. It must be special to be a student in these extravagant surrounds.

The travel industry is bleeding profusely around the globe because of COVID. Airline traffic dropped to onethird of pre-pandemic totals.

While several airline companies have kept the middle seat empty for periods of time, they’ve managed to keep passenger counts healthy by cutting down the number of flights, grounding much of their fleet and using smaller airplanes.

Hotels, the first sector of the travel industry to be affected, report less than one-third of their rooms have been occupied this year.

St. Mary Medical Center expands outpatient options A 20,455-square-foot third floor addition at the Valparaiso Health Center of St. Mary Medical Center is expected to be completed in June, according to CEO Janice Ryba. The added space will accommodate the hospital’s growing physical therapy, medical oncology and gastroenterology service lines.

“The additional space serves to provide our patients with even more quality services at one convenient location close to home,” Ryba said. “Therapy services will be expanding their space due to increasing demand. A medical oncology group will be housed at the center to see patients.

We also will be enhancing and expanding space to accommodate additional physician offices.”

“As part of the project, the new floor creates gastroenterology capabilities so that procedures will be made available at the Valparaiso location,” Ryba said.

The Valparaiso Health Center opened eight years ago in January 2013, east of Highway 49 at Burlington Beach Road. Services include an immediate care facility with the support of full-service imaging (bone densitometry, CT, mammography, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray), a clinical laboratory, therapy and cardiology services (nuclear medicine, EKGs, echocardiograms and vein ablation).

Family medicine, gastroenterology, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pulmonology,

orthopedics and spine, neurology, weight loss/bariatrics, surgery and a variety of medical specialties round out the spectrum of health care providers available to patients.

“The Valparaiso Health Center represents a commitment to the high quality, patient-centered medical services available through our hospital and health care system,” Ryba said. “It remains an important link in our ability to build healthier communities with convenient access to a large number of outpatient services.”

The Valparaiso Health Center of St. Mary Medical Center is part of the Community Healthcare System of hospitals including Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and specialty hospital Community Stroke and Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point.
