An Outreach For Alone, Isolated Elders %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Not even a pandemic can keep good folks down. That includes Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly for northwest Indiana. While COVID-19 has prevented Little Brothers volunteers from in-person contact with their elders, they’re keeping in touch on a more regular basis. Since 2012, Little Brothers has been bringing friendship and connection to elders in 14 northwest Indiana communities. These elders, who may be living without friends or family, are now experiencing outreach, programs and services. Little Brothers volunteers are currently engaged in online contact and other virtual programs. For instance, for Valentine’s Day, Little Brothers staff and volunteers

personally delivered gifts to elders. Volunteers are also honoring elders’ birthdays and, in emergency cases, staff delivers food. “We’re still continuing our mission,” said Ann Wohlberg, director of program. Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly remains committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly through volunteer outreach. Started in 1946 after World War II, Little Brothers has a handful of chapters in the U.S. and is in eight other countries. With the Chicago chapter expanding into northwest Indiana nine years ago, Little Brothers locally serves an estimated 70 elderly through 72 volunteers. Michael Galbreath, Peotone, Ill., has been a Little Brothers volunteer for six years, serving Chicago,

Hammond, Gary and Hobart. A retired special education administrator, Galbreath said, “You learn a lot about the aging experience. It gives me more compassion for people. It’s like reading a novel. There’s always something new you didn’t expect.” Lillie Hall of Gary, a six-year volunteer, noted, “I love people. I get such a kick making people laugh, and that makes me laugh. Older people encourage me.” She added, “I’m on a journey I’m happy I got hooked into. It’s a part of me.” Speaking Nov. 8, 2019, at the initial End Loneliness Symposium, Wohlberg noted, “Isolation comes with age. We find ways to keep their passions and interests alive and to provide a forum for elders to share them with each other.” Prior to COVID-19, volunteers

and the elderly enjoyed visits, movies, conversations, lunch and even picnics. “I’m contributing to someone who needs help and they show so much appreciation,” said seven-year volunteer Valarine Brown of Merrillville. “I’ve learned to be grateful for the things I have. Some of these people are so lonely, it’s a blessing I can help.” According to Jacqueline Townsend, northwest Indiana expansion program coordinator, all services are free to the elderly. Donations support the program. Little Brothers welcomes women and men, 70 and older, who are aging without the support of family and friends. The average age of elders is 82, with some at 100 or older and 38% rely on a walker or wheelchair. Before the pandemic, Townsend Continued on page 2
