The Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection, a Nappanee Public Library branch, is located at the Nappanee Center, 302 W. Market St., Nappanee, IN 46550.

The collection features over 10,000 square feet of Nappanee History, telling Nappanee’s story through rotating exhibits and displays. Main attractions include “Hoosier” cabinets, a tribute to six nationally-known cartoonists, Emma Schrock Art Gallery, an Air Force One display, and the John Hartman House.

The new design showcases a clean and modern look, with a unique icon and carefully selected colors that represent different parts of our collection. We are excited to reintroduce people to our rich history and share our bright future with this amazing community.

The Doug Grant Family Gallery

In 2020, the Heritage Collection added the Doug Grant Family Gallery, home to over sixty Emma Schrock paintings, to the collection. Emma Schrock, known as the “Grandma Moses of Northern Indiana,” is well known for her vivid portrayal of Old Order Mennonite farm life.

Our new brand, created by Vala Marketing, tells a compelling story of its own.

The Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection

The ELC Heritage Collection has over 45,000 items related to Nappanee History. The collection became an official branch of the Nappanee Public Library in 2020.

The Historic

John Hartman House

The Historic John Hartman House was built in 1888 for John and Rebecca (Peters) Hartman and was designed by resident architect, Henry Frazier. Four rooms are currently open to the public, and the entrance is located inside the Nappanee Center.

W elcome to Nappanee!

On behalf of the businesses and residents in Nappanee, I would like to thank you for visiting Nappanee. We hope you enjoy your time with us and find some great reasons to stay a little longer!

Nappanee is home to a diverse economy with locally and regionally owned businesses. The Wa-Nee School System consistently ranks in the top of the state for quality of education. Our neighborhoods are safe and walkable. Our five community parks provide opportunities to enjoy nature and stay active. However, it is our caring and compassionate citizens that make Nappanee so successful. Taking pride in the community, our residents work together, continually looking for ways to improve.

Our downtown continues to thrive with several boutique businesses and eateries. Coppes Commons, a former cabinet factory just a few blocks east of downtown, has been redeveloped with unique shopping and dining experiences. The Nappanee Center, located at 302 W. Market Street, is a great place to explore the history and intriguing artifacts from the City’s past.

Nappanee is proud to partner with the businesses, schools, library, Boys and Girls Club, The Center (Family Christian Development Center), Chamber of Commerce, and local service clubs to provide the best place to live, learn, work, and play. We are always interested to hear from visitors and residents on how we can make Nappanee even better. Together we are “Building a Better Nappanee.” If you have questions or comments, please feel free to email, call, or stop by my office.

Sincerely,

Mayor Phil Jenkins (574) 773-2112

Embrace the Pace that is only found in Nappanee

Aswampy, muddy bog was transformed into a beautiful little city. Nappanee began back in the late 1800’s when the B & O Railroad came through. Since that time, Nappanee has kept growing. Now with close to 7,000 locals, we invite you to come and Embrace the Pace in Nappanee.

Nappanee is known for being friendly and helpful. But did you know that we are welcoming as well? Nappanee puts out the red carpet for everyone. No special promotion needed. It is just who we are. We invite you to shop our local flavor, our boutiques, restaurants and Amish-owned shops within walking and short driving distance from our downtown.

Speaking of shopping, Nappanee has most everything you could imagine you would need.

Clothing, hardware, auto, home goods, furniture, games, toys, general store items and food. Plenty of options for you to enjoy your day. How about shopping Indiana’s oldest locally owned jewelry store? It won’t disappoint. Buy some fudge while strolling along with a coffee in your hand. Stop in and see what’s new in our boutique shops. Take a stroll to the Nappanee Center for a 10,000 square foot free museum all about Nappanee.

There are eateries aplenty in Nappanee. From fresh-baked goods, barbecue, sushi and, yes, even gizzards, Nappanee has you covered. Wash it down with a local drink or your favorite at many of our family-friendly restaurants and eateries. Take some goodness home with you from our local candy shop or coffee shop. Cookies, ice cream and even some surprises will await you in Nappanee.

Embrace the Pace will have you feeling right at home in Nappanee. You won’t have to worry about finding parking. There is plenty of free parking in our downtown and surrounding areas. Most shops are just a short walk down the sidewalk. Come, sit and listen to the horse and buggies traveling through town. Or take a walk on our walking and bike path. Our parks are getting a makeover and we invite you to take a stroll through some amazing outdoor spaces.

Arts and Music are alive in Nappanee as well. We have an art path, and a nationally-ranked theater that has shows and live music performances all year long. There has never been a better time to make Nappanee a destination along your journey. Please come and Embrace the Pace only found in Nappanee, Indiana.

Happy Birthday, Nappanee!

On December 12, 2024 Nappanee will turn 150 years old!

Prior to 1800, Nappanee was home to the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. In the early 1840’s, the first white settlers came to Union Township to take advantage of Indiana’s fertile land.

“Onion was King” among the crops that put Nappanee on the map, including potatoes, hemp and mint, which thrived in the area’s muck soil.

By 1875, shortly after the railroad came through, the village of Locke started to move

south to Nappanee. Not only people but homes and businesses were sleighed to Nappanee.

The Coppes and Mutschler Brothers were amongst the earliest entrepreneurs, providing a way to make a living through their logging company, saw mill and box-making and furniture factories.

In the last 150 years, Nappanee has grown to become home to a population of over

7,000 with a diverse economy and unique cultures of old and new living and working together.

Explore Nappanee History

While visiting Nappanee, be sure to add the Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection at the Nappanee Center, located at 302 W. Market Street to your itinerary. With over 10,000 sq. ft. of Nappanee history on display, you will be captivated by the city’s storied past.

While you are here, you can enter Nappanee’s first jail cell, discover artifacts as extraordinary as a prototype space capsule developed by Aeronautical engineer Lee Weaver, and inspect a threedimensional Foo Car, inspired by the cartoons of Bill Holman.

In the military room, you’ll find Lt. Col. Todd Beer’s Air Force One uniform and the story of his time as a pilot for Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Many military items are on permanent display, such as memorabilia, weapons, uniforms, and more dated from the Civil War to the Gulf War.

The Collection’s assembly of “Hoosier Cabinets” and other kitchen furniture will illustrate the story of “Nappanee: Kitchen Capital of the World,” at the turn of the last century and how we exported thousands of cabinets across the country by rail. According to a 1920 advertisement, these kitchen cabinets saved cooks hundreds of steps in completing tasks like making an apple pie.

Before you leave, don’t forget to step inside one of the oldest homes in the city, built by businessman John Hartman in 1897.

It’s located inside the Museum! Need a laugh? Look no further than the Collection’s display of cartoon strips, illustrations, and other artifacts from Nappanee’s six nationally-known cartoonists – more than any city can claim per capita!

The Museum’s newest addition includes the new art gallery featuring local artist, Emma Schrock. Schrock, known as the “Grandma Moses of Elkhart County,” lived in what she painted and painted what she saw. Growing up with physical challenges, Schrock used painting as a way to work outside her home. She truly captured the Old Order Mennonite way of life and her art is an excellent example of what makes our area so unique.

The museum is free of charge and is open Monday through Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 9-1. Come in today and journey into Nappanee’s past!
