A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION ENCOURAGES REPEAT VISITS
by julie young, house & home feature writer
Everyone knows first impressions are lasting impressions. It’s true when it comes to curb appeal, and it’s even more accurate once your guests walk through the door. So how can a host make the most of their space so holiday visitors want to come back? It turns out homeowners who put their best foot forward tend to have a few things in common.
WELCOME “HOME”
Hotel lobbies evoke a warm, welcoming atmosphere for weary travelers looking for rest and your home’s entryway should offer a similar effect. Everything should look efficient, organized and neutral with a few key accessories that pull the whole area together. Consider a few classic picture frames mounted on the wall, a hook for keys, a basket for umbrellas and a large mirror to give the illusion of more space. There are plenty of places in your home to let your eclectic personality shine, but the entry way is not one of them.

THE NOSE KNOWS
While the overall look and appearance of your home matters, don’t overlook how it may smell to an outsider. This may require some objectivity that you don’t have so don’t be afraid to get some honest feedback from a neutral third party. Infuse your home with a fresh, uplifting scent such as citrus, vanilla, pine or something seasonal (like fresh baked cookies) to welcome your guests when they arrive.

CUT THE CLUTTER
Look, we all have it: a pile of shoes by the door, mail strewn across the kitchen island, an array of old magazines underneath an end table, or more than a few holiday knick-knacks laying around. Now is the time to clear these items from the foyer, extra bathroom or other gathering spaces so your home does not feel small and cramped. Use functional storage to hide the debris so everyone can relax.

IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS
While no houseguest expects their host to go out of his or her way for them; they don’t want to feel like an imposition either. Anticipate their needs ahead of time. Place fresh towels in your guest bathroom so they know what linens you would like them to use. Supply them with your Internet password so they don’t have to ask for it, stock up on toiletries and sundries just in case they forgot and if possible, install a coffee pot and cups in your guest suite so they can have that first cup before they come down for breakfast. If there are small children or pets involved, don’t forget them when preparing some amenities.
It’s a great compliment when guests want to stay in your home for the holidays, so treat them the way you would want to be treated and you can be sure they will want to return again and again! n
