Beverage Bottoms Up

In the scorching, yet welcome, heat of summer, whilst lounging lakeside, what’s more refreshing than a tasty, cold drink? Not much, we say. Enjoy these simple-to-make, tried-and-true drink recipes, half for the kiddos and half for adults who wish to indulge a little. Cheers!

Banana Smoothie

1 cup sliced banana, frozen preferably ¼ cup vanilla Greek yogurt ¼ cup almond milk ¼ teaspoon vanilla A few ice cubes if banana is not frozen

*makes one serving

1. Place all ingredients in a blender.

Blend until smooth, adding more milk if needed to reach desired consistency. Serve immediately.

Garnish with additional sliced banana—and whipped cream to make the kiddos smile.

Basil-Berry Lemonade

2 bottles (64 oz. each) pre-made pink lemonade 16 ounces fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and/or blackberries) 1 cup fresh basil leaves

*makes enough for a happy lake crowd

1. Add berries and basil to the bottom of a large pitcher. Slightly muddle berries and basil to release flavors.

2. Add lemonade and stir to combine.

Refrigerate 2 hours to allow flavors to mix.

3. Serve over ice. Garnish with additional basil leaf or berries.

Detox Water

2 lemons, sliced ½ cucumber, cubed 10-12 mint leaves 3 quarts water

*makes enough for the whole fam’

1. Brew overnight in the refrigerator. Then, enjoy as this quenches thirst and flushes impurities from the body.

Mojito

10 fresh mint leaves ½ lime, cut into 4 wedges 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste 1 cup ice cubes 1½ ounces white rum ½ cup club soda

*makes one serving

1. Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a glass. Use a muddler to release juices and flavors of mint oils and lime juice. Add two more lime wedges and the sugar. Muddle again. Fill glass with ice, pour rum over ice, then fill glass with club soda. Stir, then garnish with remaining lime wedge.

Moscow Mule

1 cup ice ½ fresh lime 2 ounces vodka 4 ounces ginger beer 2 lime slices

*makes one serving

1. Fill a tall glass with ice.

Squeeze ½ lime over ice. Pour vodka over ice and top with ginger beer. Garnish with lime slices. For variation, try cherry vodka for added sweetness.

Pineapple Screwdriver

6 ounces pineapple juice 6 ounces orange juice 4 ounces vodka Optional garnishes: fresh mint, maraschino cherries, pineapple chunks, orange peel

*makes one serving

1. Mix pineapple juice, orange juice, and vodka together.

2. Fill glasses with ice and top with pineapple screwdriver mixture.

3. Garnish with mint, cherries, orange peel, or pineapple if desired.
