County Profile

Kosciusko County

by Sue Pais photos by Jessica Barger, Mike Deak, Janeen Malfait + Sue Pais Any person with an affection for the lakes, will appreciate (and notice) the natural beauty that surrounds. The gorgeous sunrise over a glassy, yetuntouched lake. The serenity found in early morning kayak rides, and the soothing hum of boaters nearby. The sunsets we seek to soothe countless souls each night.

There’s simply nothing quite like it.

And aren’t we so blessed with such bountiful surroundings in Kosciusko County? Of course, we are. Adorned with lakes, streams, woods, wildlife, farmland, and rolling hills, Kosciusko County is home to lake-living families who embrace the sunshine, the heat, the moments—and welcome the (very) occasional rainstorms of Augusts.

We are a community. We share an affection for lake living—and we appreciate the word play in ‘dog days’ of summer, as so many lake families are also dog families. We are laid-back. We are welcoming. And, indeed, we like to explore and have a good time. We are unique Kosciusko County.

With artisans’ and farmers’ markets, conservation efforts, and historical remembrance and celebrations alike, despite the pandemic, there’s plenty to see and do. From waterside dining to local breweries and pubs, there’s a smile, a ‘how are ya?,’ and a ‘hope to see you again soon,’ wherever we might go.

Formed in 1836, Kosciusko County offers something wonderful for everyone— whether it’s exploring outdoorsy + water-loving interests, fulfilling an angler’s dream with plentiful fishing, soaking in arts + education, intriguing history buffs, catching lightning bugs, hosting cookouts and early evening bonfires, and soaking in each moment of a sunset cruise on the family pontoon.

Yes, Kosciusko County has it all.
